Alvin Xiong // CROSS INFLUENTIAL ‘light creates the power and magic of a painting, its richness, eloquence, sensuality, and beauty.’

Otto Piene, Light Ballet As his research, Alvin Xiong utilises light itself to be the painting medium. He was inspired by the process of long exposure photographic techniques to create images, which is about moving the hand-held light source or by moving the camera.

Man Ray’s ‘Space writing’ (self-portrait) influenced him to think that light could be used as a painting medium instead of traditional techniques. In his work, the photograph is the canvas for helping him capture his painting actions with the paint: light.

“My actions in my ‘light painting photographs’ are related to the abstract expressionism which places emphasis on spontaneous, automatic or subconscious creation.”

For Xiong, this is an act of liberation, he say’s “I think it is because the abstract art clearly implied

the expression of ideas concerning the spiritual, the unconscious and the mind.”

Alvin Xiong was born in China 1987 and immigrated to New Zealand in 2001. And he went back to China to finish his studies. In 2011 he graduated and was awarded a Bachelor’s degree, majoring in oil painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA). Xiong moved back to New Zealand in 2012 and he began a Transitional Certificate at Elam School of Fine Arts in University of Auckland in 2013 and earlier this year he is currently completing an MFA at Elam School of Fine Arts. He will continue his academic studies and over the next two years undergo a Doctorial of Fine Arts. Xiong is an ever experimental young artist with a unique vision which is increasingly being acknowledged by his contemporaries and through awards, such as most recently he has just been awarded one of only four winners in the 2014, NZ Art Show Emerging Artist Awards, Wellington, NZ.
