PCMS Member Colleagues,

Spring has finally arrived. Longer days, warmer weather, and pollen everywhere. Time to take that Claritin and get outdoors and enjoy the PNW.

I would like to welcome and congratulate our new Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department director of public health, Chantell Harmon Reed. We are excited to work with her to continue to improve the lives of patients and providers in our county.

It was great to see so many members attend the March Clinician Engagement Event co-hosted with TRA at their spectacular Crescent Lounge in their administrative building What an incredible space to enjoy some camaraderie Between pool, darts, pinball, and big screen tv’s I am not sure how any x-rays get read but TRA does a fantastic job in both their clinical abilities as well as community support.

PCMS continues to support the Mt. Tahoma High School Healthcare Careers Academy and was able to donate scrubs once again for this year’s students. This month’s cover photos are students at a healthcare event with our scrubs We are looking for providers who would be able to go into the classroom for a couple of hours to share their experience and passion about medicine with the students It is a good opportunity to impact those malleable minds and promote our incredible privilege of delivering healthcare. If you have it in you, please reach out to Linda Krause and she will help set things up for you.

Be on the lookout for future PCMS engagements. On Sunday, June 9th is a wine tasting at Tacoma Wine Merchants featuring Vino de Espana (yes, I got to choose the region) Join us from 2:00pm - 4:00pm

On August 25th is our annual event to support our community residents with a Rainier game. On September 17th we will be hosting an opportunity to meet your District Representative. Make sure to attend and bend their ears on what is important to you and your practice that they can take back to Olympia during the next session. Finally, we will again be having our annual winter members social on December 3, 2024.

As we bid adieu to winter and welcome the warmer months, let us remember to take advantage of our membership and medical community and take a moment to laugh at ourselves and the absurdities of our profession. After all, a chuckle a day keeps the malpractice suits away!

Did you know we can start preparing for the 2024-2025 School Year Now?

Orders for next school year can be drafted now, so long as the order indicates it is for the 2024-25 school year. This will help limit the back-to-school rush in your medical offices and our health rooms.

Students with medication needs at school, both prescription and/ or over the counter, must provide new orders for school each school year.

Schools can accept provider office order forms so long as they include the 5 rights (Patient, Medication, Route, Time, & Dose), a provider signature, and guardian signature

If your office does not have a standard form, you can use the PCMS school order forms.

Please remember, the order form must also match the prescription label. A mismatched label and order will require an update to either the provider order and/or the prescription bottle.

Thank you for your early attention to this matter. We appreciate your partnership with school health teams to ensure students start school on time and are not excluded from attendance.

FTC Rule Bans New Non-competes

What does the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Final Rule Banning Non-competes mean for Pierce County Physicians and PAs?

In April 2024, the FTC issued a final rule broadly banning new non-compete agreements and rendering existing noncompete agreements unenforceable nationwide, across industries for all workers.

This FTC rule applies to Pierce County Physicians and PAs. The only exception is that existing non-compete agreements will remain enforceable for anyone considered a senior executive. A senior executive is defined as workers earning more than 151k per year and who are in policymaking positions.

The final rule was published in the Federal Register on May 7, 2024, and will go into effect 120 days after publication: September 4, 2024.

According to Hillary Norris, JD (WSMA Policy Analyst) “The final rule makes existing non-competes for workers other than senior executives unenforceable after the effective date. Physicians and PAs who are not senior executives should be free from their non-competes once the final rule goes into effect, regardless of how long ago they entered into them”.

We will send out more information about this change in the coming months. If you have any questions, please let us know. PCMS office: 253-572-3667; or email us at: pcms@pcmswa.org.

Also, a reminder that all PCMS Directors meetings are open to members. Our next meeting is Tuesday, June 11th from 6pm-8pm at the Fircrest Golf Club-boardroom Please RSVP with Tanya if you would like to attend.

Sincerely,

All Medical Specialists needed
