“To laugh often and much: To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Design Statement
I chose to embark in Landscape Architecture, first, due to my affinity for creativity. To align creative process with my future profession is of great significance to me. Initially, landscape architecture appeared to provide an artful and viable career path in which I could support myself and lifestyle as well as my creative pursuits. While I don’t think these reasons are necessarily invalid, I certainly was drawn to landscape architecture on the basis of what it could do for me, rather than what I can do with it.
Throughout my tenure as a student, I’ve come to see the many ways that a landscape architect can impact a place. From designing lush landscapes and interactive spaces to revitalizing weathered sites, a landscape architect has the potential to conduct the culture, movement and ecology of a place. BLA Professors have long boasted the expertise of the profession, rightfully so, as one must be considerate of many integral features of a place to cohesively direct a design.
One key motif in the BLA program is harmonious integration. As I’ve matured as a student, my understanding of this phrase, albeit intuitive, has deepened and facilitated my philosophy of landscape architecture. Human beings are gifted with the ability to create ruthlessly, an ability easily misused. I feel the duty of the landscape architect is to abide by the natural systems in place, whilst assimilating the impressions of humankind to a degree of harmony.

In crafting the residential design narrative for a family with children, the focus was on creating a private, interactive and comfortable space within the context of existing vegetation. Some key foci of the design are the incorporation of interactive elements such as a treehouse, a gazebo, and a 3-tiered garden, which enrich the outdoor living experience and provide spaces for family gatherings and leisure. Guest parking facilities have been thoughtfully integrated to accommodate visitors, enhancing the convenience and functionality of the property. Embracing an organic and curvilinear design approach, decisions to retain and abide by much of the existing vegetation, fostering a sense of continuity and integration within the landscape.
An integral component of the design narrative is the inclusion of a rain garden, strategically positioned to facilitate proper drainage while also enhancing the visual appeal of the site. The rain garden serves a dual purpose, addressing environmental considerations while adding aesthetic value to the overall composition. By emphasizing sustainability and ecological consciousness, the design not only mitigates potential drainage issues but also celebrates the beauty of nature. Through meticulous attention to detail and a thoughtful integration of elements, the residential
narrative reflects a holistic vision that caters to the needs and aspirations of the family, fostering a symbiotic relationship between architecture and environment.
Site Background
Slope Analysis

Existing conditions of the site present a densely wooded area and spaces with significant elevation change. In attempt to collide design with the origin, the dense vegetation and areas with lower grade provide opportunities to orchestrate the design concept. This plan is intended to be a single family residence, so the retained woodland will service privacy for it’s occupants. The existing terrain and grades are considered heavily to optimize cut and fill..

Residential Design Vacation Retreat-
Yardley Place
Project Description:
Vacation Resort Design in San Juan,
PR
Studio:
LAND 3030 (Second Year, First Semester)

Yardley Place is a vacation getaway in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The existing lot is open and undeveloped so the design was able to flow freely without constraints. The space is orchestrated to provide a leisurely and walkable atmosphere for visitors and vacationers, so many pleasant amenities are included. The entrance immediately leads to a roundabout, covered drop off zone, encompassed by aesthetic, native plantings. All unpaved areas are intentionally flushed with trees for shade to account for the hot climate of Puerto Rico.
The back side of the site, the north side, is filled by an outdoor pool and lounge area as well as a walking path connecting the pool to a series of outdoor dining commons. The intent of the paths and pool is drawn from relaxation, so a meandering pattern is utilized. Another amusement of the design is found in the rooftop section, where an array of amenities are conveyed. The rooftop plaza is comprised of many spatially divisive raised planting beds, a sauna, a hot tub, an outdoor bar, seating and a dining section with curvilinear arrangement, correlating to the meandering theme.

The circulation system has two entrances, on the South and West edges, combining within the site to create a radial road around the focal points of the site. (From a birds eye view, one might mistake it for a space shuttle). To create a cohesive, extraterrestrial experience, many alien-related items were included in the design, such as a massive Nazca line at the entry, replica pyramids and a UFO, and scattered statues of cows and little green aliens. Certainly, this restaurant is catering to a younger audience, given the childlike nature of the concept, so the space is designed to be open, safe and filled with fun articles to explore.

Project Description:
Group Project; Redesign of Commercial Strip and Neighborhood Park Studio: LAND 3040 (Second Year, Second Semester)

The Trinity Commons Project is a collaborative group project completed with five memebers. The selected site presents a neighborhood in need of revitalization and an outdated commercial strip; the mission is to acknowledge and restore the space for the sake of resident enjoyment and engagement as well as the satisfaction of consuming visitors.
A major design motif is triangular in form, emanating from the overarching geometry of the site. Thus, triangular forms can be found throughout the design on a variety of scales. This presented a unique and fresh challenge to explore irregular forms among the site. The immeadiately emerging triangular features are manifested through the park and pocket park within the neighborhood. More subtle variants are found within the commercial plaza section in the form of outdoor equipment and planting arrangments.
On the topic of the commercial plaza, this proved the most challenging aspect of the design. Much was changed, as previously a typical mundane commercial browsing area was it’s identity. To embellish the area and extract the interactive value of the space, a linear, end to end pedestrian plaza is introduced. The plaza connects the user to the entire strip and provides an array of leisurely facilities. While the dominant intention of the plaza strip is to narate the transfer of movement, two explicit sections yield greater utility. Distinguishing qualities of these spaces include expanded plaza area with the incorporation of diverse amenties, from public art and water features, dining spaces, multi-purpose open spaces for interchangeable use, and interactive games for user enjoyment. The proposed design creates a blossoming community space for the benefit of the local population and neighboring residents.
