FIRST STEP (15 MOS–2 1/2 YEARS) Teachers provide a warm and nurturing environment where little ones learn to trust other child care providers. Children explore and interact through playful activities, art, music, and movement both indoors and outdoors. A strong emphasis is placed on sharing, taking turns and respecting personal space.

TIDDLYWINKS (2–3 YEARS) Children develop independence, self-help, and social skills while experimenting with materials and develop friendships in a relaxed atmosphere. The curriculum is play-based, and as children explore art, science, singing, dancing, circle time and outdoor play/discovery time, teachable moments are instilled throughout the days.

ENCHANTED PLAYLAND (3–5 YEARS) Where your child will naturally notice, observe, and discover the amazing wonders and mysteries of our world and beyond. Open ended exploration playfully fosters your child’s growth and autonomy while building empathetic relationships with each other and the world. Props, puppetry, toys, music movement, story time, games and activities are thoughtfully designed to inspire further creative exploration related to seasonal themes and our evolving environment!!

HILLSIDE PLAYSCHOOL (3–5 YEARS) A play-based program that emphasizes learning through active engagement with the environment. With an emergent curriculum, children follow their interests and learn at their own pace with short and long term activities. Our classroom is organized by learning centers: puzzles and games, manipulative toys and blocks, reading area, dramatic play, writing table, art, science and discovery areas. We strive to support self-confidence and independence while encouraging empathy and positive social skills.

PRE-K (4 1/2 –5 YEARS) Where children experience learning at their own pace and are gently guided towards kindergarten readiness. Enjoy circle/ sharing time, literature, art, math, science, indoor/outdoor play, singing, gardening, dancing and drama. Consistent focus is on development of positive self-esteem and self-confidence, learning pro-social behavior, responding positively and compassionately, identifying and acknowledging our own and others’ feelings and learning to resolve conflict peacefully.

SKIPPING STONES (2.9–5 YEARS) A play-based curriculum that emerges from children’s interests, and individual, developmental needs. Within the context of short and long term projects, children experience learning at their own pace. The classroom is organized by learning centers for the children to explore: puzzles and games, the reading corner, manipulative toys and blocks, dramatic play, writing table, art / science / discovery center, gardening and cooking. A message from your

Director

As summer ‘17 comes to a close and another school year begins, we at PRD are excited to offer a wide range of Fall programs to our community. We continue to work closely with Piedmont Middle School to provide diverse enrichment opportunities including interscholastic athletics, debate, arts, and healthy relationships programming. Mid-day and afternoon enrichment activities for pre-school aged children have also been expanded and the Piedmont Community Pool will again offer swim lessons through mid November. Together with the Department of Public Works, we have been busy addressing deferred maintenance issues in our parks and buildings that will certainly enhance recreation programs in Piedmont. Hampton Park underwent major renovations last year that resulted in improved basketball, tennis, and field facilities. Playground equipment was replaced at the Recreation Department tot lot and master planning efforts are under way for the Linda Beach tot lot and the area surrounding Beach Playfield. Our beloved fall traditions will return again this year. Harvest Festival Weekend begins with the FALL FEST 5K Run on Saturday, September the 23rd followed by Movie in the Park on Saturday evening, and on Sunday is our traditional Harvest Festival. To get us all ready for a fun Halloween celebration, the Piedmont Community Pool will host its annual Pool Pumpkin Patch on October 21. The Piedmont Recreation Department building will once again transform itself in to the Haunted House for three spooky nights: October 25, 26, 27.

Kids’ Carpentry

How To Be A Ninja

Students gain experience in measuring, physical engineering, abstract reasoning, applied math, fine motor skills, patience and the safe use of a variety of carpentry tools. The lessons, projects, and tools evolve with each student’s pace. Students build from a variety of project examples such as boats, trucks, bird feeders, swords, doll furniture, spinning tops, airplanes, games and more.

Everyone wants to be a ninja, and this class will teach you how. Adapted martial arts techniques from around the world help kids gain body awareness, self-control, and confidence. Class includes physical games designed to teach the ancient secrets of stealth and surprise, as well as partner games that enhance reflexes and non-verbal communication skills. Students sharpen their senses, strengthen their bodies, and learn skills they’ve only imagined. Specially designed for those with an inner ninja waiting to sneak out.

Parents are important partners in the success of these programs and are strongly encouraged to attend this session during which Natasha Singh will discuss what can be expected from this series and will also report back on lessons learned from working with Piedmont teens and tweens over the last two years. Rather than offering one-off courses to students on vital issues, we’re launching a series of courses designed to help students build their knowledge base, practice new awareness in an ongoing way, and experience growth within a peer group. In these classes, we will address gender role training, porn consumption, consent, digital ethics, sexual harassment, unlearning racism, privilege, emotional intelligence, effective communication, healthy relationships, and more. Healthy Relationships: Gender, Race and Class

NEW

Natasha Singh

Increasingly, students are being called upon to navigate the differences they encounter online and offline. But without a solid understanding of gender role training, anti-racism, and various forms of oppression, it’s not easy to see one’s own blind spots—or the blind spots of others. In this three-part workshop, students gain an understanding of sexism, racism and other forms of oppression in order to help them make choices that respect their own dignity as well as the dignity of others. 801 Magnolia Avenue East Wing

In this pilot-series, we offer 7th and 9th grade boys a place to examine and understand gender role training, anti-racism, digital ethics, good citizenship, sexuality, consent and responsible decision-making. Beginning with the film The Mask You Live In, we look at ways in which gender scripts can impede boys in today’s culture. By analyzing messages boys get about themselves and others through music, media, pornography, gaming, and the online world, we equip boys with the tools they need to be more aware, authentic, and responsible. This innovative series includes martial arts, parent/guardian-son participation, speakers and more. (8 Sundays)

Chibi Judo - Pre-Judo

Hajime! Beginning Judo

Chibi (little) Judo helps us grow! As we jump, run, and roll we develop balance, coordination and confidence. We learn simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We learn games, songs and the language of Japan. And, at Hanabi, we learn that respect comes as naturally as smiling.

Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. Fun tumbling, jumping and running activities warm us up before we practice our “ukemi" or falling techniques. We learn to hold a person down with “kesa-gatame” (scarf hold) and we practice throws – where our opponent can be flipped upside down – on Sensei. We sing in Japanese about inspiration, bow to each other respectfully and say “arigatoh,” thank you.
