A SEASON DEDICATED TO OUR LEADING LADY When we talk about strong women at Piedmont Opera, one name comes to mind: Bonnie Poindexter.

Bonnie was our champion, our pusher and mover, our opera mom, our executive director (twice) and our friend and mentor.

We lost Bonnie this year.

She left a void that we can never fill.

As the Executive Director for the March of Dimes for 22 years, she raised millions of dollars to improve infant mortality. After she retired, she worked with the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorale, the Arts Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus, Twin City Stage, Sawtooth School for Visual Art and Piedmont Opera.

Throughout her many years with us she illustrated love, devotion, perseverance and a passion for living.

SYNOPSIS The action of the story takes place in Rome, June 1800 Act I The Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle; just before noon Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner, takes refuge in a chapel of the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome. An elderly sacristan comes to tidy up, followed by Cavaradossi, who is painting a portrait of the Madonna. Cavaradossi compares his Madonna’s blonde-haired, blue-eyed charm with the dark beauty of his lover, the singer Floria Tosca.

Angelotti emerges to find Cavaradossi, his political ally, who promises to help him escape from Rome. Angelotti hides again at the sound of Tosca’s voice. Tosca jealously demands to know why the door was locked. As Cavaradossi reassures her of his love, they join in a passionate duet.

Once Tosca has gone, Angelotti reappears, and he and Cavaradossi plan his flight. A cannon shot announces the discovery of Angelotti’s escape. They exit. The sacristan enters followed by clerics and choir boys excited by the rumors of Bonaparte’s defeat by General Melas at the Battle of Marengo. Baron Scarpia, the chief of police, arrives with his henchman Spoletta in search of the escaped prisoner.

Tosca returns, and Scarpia plays upon her jealousy in hopes of discovering Angelotti’s whereabouts. When she leaves, Scarpia has her followed. As the crowd intones the “Te Deum,” Scarpia vows to bring Cavaradossi to the gallows and Tosca into his arms.

Act II Scarpia’s study in the Palazzo Farnese; that evening Alone at dinner, Scarpia reviews his plot. Spoletta reports that he and his men trailed Tosca to Cavaradossi’s villa and found no trace of Angelotti, but placed Cavaradossi under arrest. Cavaradossi is brought in and questioned. Scarpia has sent for Tosca, and she enters as Cavaradossi is taken away to be tortured. Upon hearing his cries, Tosca reveals Angelotti’s hiding place. Cavaradossi is dragged into the study. His anger at Tosca’s betrayal turns to joy when Sciarrone announces that Bonaparte has actually defeated Melas at Marengo. The enraged Scarpia sends Cavaradossi back to his cell.

SYNOPSIS Tosca asks the price of her lover’s freedom. Scarpia will accept only Tosca’s submission. Tosca sobs to herself: She has devoted her life to music and piety; why does God repay her with misery? Spoletta enters with the news that Angelotti has killed himself rather than be arrested. Ashamed, Tosca signals that she will give in to the Baron, on condition that Cavaradossi be set free. Scarpia explains that he cannot grant a pardon; he can only release Cavaradossi by faking his death in a mock execution. Tosca demands a note of safe passage for herself and Cavaradossi. While he is writing, Tosca catches sight of a knife on his dinner table and, unnoticed, takes it. Scarpia seals the note, then turns to embrace the diva. “This is Tosca’s kiss!” she cries, plunging the knife deep into his heart. Scarpia cries out for help as Tosca curses him. She takes the safe-conduct pass and slips out of the room.

Act III The parapet of Castel Sant’Angelo; dawn of the following day The voice of a shepherd is heard as church bells signal dawn.

Cavaradossi awaits execution. He bribes the jailer to allow him to write a final note to Tosca. As he writes, he is flooded with memories. Tosca rushes in with the note of safe passage and the story of Scarpia’s violent death. Cavaradossi praises her courage, saying that her gentle hands were not meant for murder. Tosca tells him of the plan for his feigned execution: after the gunshots he is to lie still until she gives him a signal.

Tosca is filled with anxiety as her lover is led before the soldiers.

They fire and Cavaradossi falls to the ground. Tosca whispers to him to remain motionless until everyone has gone. At last she tells him it is safe, but he does not respond. With a piercing scream, Tosca realizes Scarpia’s final deceit. She weeps over Cavaradossi’s body as Spoletta and Sciarrone, having found the Baron murdered, burst in to arrest her. Too quick for them, she runs to a parapet, shouts “Oh, Scarpia, we shall meet before God!” and hurls herself to her death.

The Artists James Allbritten,

General Director and Principal Conductor Allbritten is beginning his third season as General Director for Piedmont Opera after serving ten years as its Artistic Director. His work for the company has received considerable critical acclaim. Of PO’s Madama Butterfly, Opera Lively said, “Jamie Allbritten does understand it, and his conducting, if we need to define it by one word, is elegant.” The New York Wagner Society had this to say of his Flying Dutchman: “The joy of the afternoon was Allbritten’s finely modulated conducting, which brought out the varying moods of the score.” Of the company’s Un ballo in maschera, Opera News said, “The musical excellence for the entire evening was the work of the conductor, James Allbritten… His tempos were well chosen, attacks were precise, and coordination and balance with the singers was exemplary.” He has led a wide range of repertoire for PO, from Mozart to nineteenth century standard repertoire, to the opera house premiere of Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza. He is fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest names in opera, including Boris Goldovsky, Brian Balkwill, James Lucas, Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, Virginia Zeani, Giorgio Tozzi and Margaret Harshaw. Allbritten came to North Carolina to join the faculty of the UNCSA, where he was on the faculty for twenty years. He led the school’s Cantata Singers, Orchestra and was the founding Artistic Director of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute. He has also led performances for Opera Theater of the Rockies, Opera Carolina, the Carolina Chamber Symphony, the Mozart Club of Winston Salem, and the Winston-Salem Symphony.

Josh Conyers, Sciarrone Baritone Joshua Conyers continues to forge a career that embraces a wide variety of operatic styles. Last season, Mr. Conyers appeared as an imposing Count Ceprano in Piedmont Opera’s Rigoletto. He then traveled to Iowa where he joined Des Moines Metro Opera, covering the title role in Verdi’s Falstaff, followed by Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola for Opera Iowa, and performances of Cinderella in Spain, a new opera

Mr. Conyers’ passion for Italian opera has shone in his portrayals of Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, the title role of Falstaff, Marcello in La bohème, Scarpia in Tosca, and the Mandarin in Turandot with companies such as Utah Festival Opera, Piedmont Opera and Indiana University Opera Theater. As Don Giovanni in the Martina Arroyo Foundation’s Prelude to Performance production of 2011, he earned high praise from Opera News: “Conyers poured forth a deliciously honeyed baritone that would seduce anyone. He … effortlessly summoned up a laser-beam look that communicated hidden danger and volatility.” Active in contemporary opera as well, Mr. Conyers sang the roles of Mr. Umeya in the American premiere of Huang Ruo’s Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and Walt Whitman in the world premiere of Theodore Morrison’s Oscar, both with the Santa Fe Opera.

Mr. Conyers holds a Performing Artist Certificate from the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute and a Masters of Music from Indiana University. His numerous vocal competition credits include Metropolitan Opera National Council District Winner (2010, 2011 & 2015), the Charlotte Opera Guild Competition Winner, the Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition 1st place Winner, and National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Award Winner.

In 2017, Mr. Conyers joins the Benenson Young Artist Program at Palm Beach Opera, where his assignments will include Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance and Valentin in Gounod’s Faust.

The Artists Jake Gardner, Scarpia

Boasting a career of performances with major opera companies and orchestras worldwide, bass-baritone Jake Gardner remains one of the opera world’s most sought-after singing actors. Having sung a decade as principal baritone with Oper der Stadt Köln under the baton of James Conlon, his long and distinguished career has included performances with such notable companies as Wiener Volksopera, Dresden’s Semper Oper, Glyndebourne Festival, De Nederlandse Opera, Edinburgh Festival as well as Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, New York City Opera, Florida Grand Opera and a host of excellent American regional companies. Career highlights include a world tour and film of Peter Brook’s Le Tragedie de Carmen, a landmark production of Cosi fan Tutte with Trevor Nunn and Simon Rattle at the Glyndebourne Festival, and the world premiere of William Bolcom’s A Wedding directed by Robert Altman commemorating Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 50th Anniversary season.

Equally at home in the operetta and musical theater traditions, Mr. Gardner has recently appeared in productions of Annie Get Your Gun (Buffalo Bill) and The Music Man (Mayor Shin) with the Glimmerglass Festival, Merry Widow (Baron Zeta) with Los Angeles Opera, A Little Night Music (Frederic) with Hawaii Opera Theater, Die Fledermaus (Frank) and HMS Pinafore (Sir Joseph Porter) as well as a critically-acclaimed portrayal of Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, all with Virginia Opera. He returned to the role of Judge Turpin in the recent seasons with Houston Grand Opera, Mill City Summer Opera as well as Eugene Opera where he also made a triumphant debut in the role of Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin.

Upcoming engagements include his Indianapolis Opera debut as Harold Ryan in the highly anticipated world premiere production of Richard Auldon Clark’s and Kurt Vonnegut’s Happy Birthday Wanda June, the Hermit in Der Freischütz for Virginia Opera, his debut with Anchorage Opera in the company’s 55th Anniversary Gala Concerts as well as joining his wife, soprano Jill Gardner, in Holiday Pops Concerts for the Binghamton Philharmonic.

He will also be making his directorial debut in a production of Peter Brook’s La Tragédie de Carmen with Eugene Opera. Future seasons include performances with Virginia Opera, Hawai’i Opera Theater and Opera Coeur d’Alene.

The Artists Donald Hartmann, Sacristan

Since the beginning of his professional operatic singing career in 1978 at the Stadttheater Regensburg and later with the Vereinigte Städtiches Bühnen Krefeld/Mönchengladbach in Germany, bassbaritone, Donald Hartmann, continues to be an active performer with regional and national opera companies. He has been described as possessing a, “big, rich voice with an amazing timbre;” interpretative abilities as “hearty and dramatic;” vocal resonance as “ringing,” “sepulchral,” “richly focused;” and “… his flair for comedic bel canto is major-league-worthy.” Having performed in more than 135 operatic productions, in over 55 operas singing over 70 different roles, he is “one of the best character singers on any opera stage anywhere.” With a vast repertoire from works of Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Rossini, Strauss, Bizet, Britten, and many others, engagements have included appearances with Opéra de Montreal, Madison Opera, Toledo Opera, Opera Carolina, Michigan Opera Theater, Nashville Opera, Piedmont Opera, Opera Delaware, North Carolina Opera, Arizona Opera, Florentine Opera, and Virginia Opera Association.

During the 2014-2015 season, he returned to Toledo Opera for Tosca, he sang Sulpice in Daughter of the Regiment for Greensboro Opera, and he debuted as Don Manifico in La Cenerentola at Roanoke Opera. His 2015-2016 season includes Don Magnifico for Greensboro Opera, Monterone in Rigoletto for Piedmont Opera and two very important national debuts: William Jennings Bryan in the 60th anniversary production of The Ballad Baby Doe for Central City Opera in Colorado, and the Sacristan in Tosca in the historic reopening of New York City Opera’s return to Lincoln Center!

A concert recitalist and oratorio soloist, Donald Hartmann has sung with the renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Symphony #9 with New Mexico Symphony, the Verdi Requiem with the Eastern Philharmonic, Peabody Symphony, Plymouth Symphony, and a benefit performance conducted by Neeme Järvi. Donald Hartmann is a Professor of Voice in the School of Music at UNCG.

Steven LaCosse, Director

With a repertory that spans from Le nozze di Figaro to The Fantasticks, Steven LaCosse has directed over 60 productions. He directed the southeastern premiere of Ned Rorem’s Our Town as well as the American premiere of Pergolesi’s Lo frate ‘nnamorato.

Recent productions include The Flying Dutchman and Porgy and Bess for The Princeton Festival, Carmen and The Flying Dutchman for Piedmont Opera, The Sound of Music and The King and I for Opera Theatre of the Rockies and Die Fledermaus, The Consul, The Tales of Hoffmann and Mozart’s La finta giardiniera for the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute. A committed educator, he has been the managing director and resident opera stage director for the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute at the UNC School of the Arts for 18 years, and was awarded the University of North Carolina Board of Governor’s Teaching Award in 2011. Dr. LaCosse holds bachelor and doctoral degrees in voice from Indiana University, a master’s degree in voice from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree in opera stage direction from Indiana University.

The Artists Alicia Reid, The Shepherd Boy Alicia Reid is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied voice with Dr. Marilyn Taylor.

Originally from Canada, Alicia has studied music for most of her life.

A classically trained harpist, she was a finalist in the 2016 Rosen-Schaffel Concerto Competition at Appalachian State University.

She has also been a national finalist for the Classical Singer Vocal Competition in High School and College divisions and has received superior ratings in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions, most recently placing 1st in her category at the state level. She has most recently performed the role of Lauretta in Bizet’s Doctor Miracle, Phyllis in Iolanthe with Greensboro Light Opera and Song, First Spirit in Die Zauberflöte with Piedmont Opera, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte with the American Singers Opera Project, and in Dr. Siggy’s Fantastic Plan, a children’s outreach opera with the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute. She has also participated in the ensembles of La Rondine, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and Die Fledermaus at UNCSA, and South Pacific with Piedmont Opera.

Andrew René, Angelotti

Andrew René, baritone, made his public debut as a singer while studying at Baylor University. Since then, he has participated in vocal competitions and professional engagements, including performances with the Virginia Opera Association and Opera Raw. The summer of 2015 marked his third year of attendance at the Bay View Music Festival where he performed the role of Marcello in their production of Puccini’s La Bohème. Some of his previous roles include John Sorel in Menotti’s The Consul, The Pirate King in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and the title role of Verdi’s Falstaff. René recently received his undergraduate degree from Capital University where he studied with Élise DesChamps and Brian Banion, and is pursuing a Master of Music degree at the A. J. Fletcher Institute of Opera of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where he studies with Dr. Marilyn Taylor and Robert Overman.

Patrick Scully, The Jailer

Patrick Scully was born in New York City, NY and lives in Winston-Salem, NC. He received his B.A. in Theatre from Davidson College in 2012, and received his B.M. from UNC School of the Arts in 2015. For the last 3 years he has studied under Dr. Marilyn Taylor, during that time singing roles in multiple productions at UNCSA, including Luther and Crespel in The Tales of Hoffmann, the Secret Policeman in The Consul and most recently as Nonancourt in The Italian Straw Hat. He has also appeared in a number of Piedmont Opera’s productions in both chorus and principal roles, including the role of the Shore Patrolman in South Pacific, an Armored Man in The Magic Flute, the Court Usher in Rigoletto and Frid in A Little Night Music. Mr. Scully has also sung roles with the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy, including Sarastro in The Magic Flute and Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro. Patrick is extremely thankful for the continued support from his teachers, friends and family.

The Artists Dinyar Vania, Mario Cavaradossi

Dinyar Vania has recently emerged as one of the country’s most exciting young tenors. With a voice which combines both power and beauty, he has earned critical acclaim portraying several of the most beloved roles in opera. In the 2016-17 season, Mr. Vania is Don José in Carmen with Greensboro Opera; Ovidio in Martín’s Before Night Falls with Florida Grand Opera; and is soloist in Anchorage Opera’s 55th Anniversary Opera Gala.

Mr. Vania’s engagements in the 2015-16 season included Dick Johnson in La fanciulla del West with Opera Omaha; Cavaradossi in Tosca for his Utah Opera debut; Alfredo in La Traviata with Opera Roanoke; and Messiah with Wichita Symphony. His 2014-15 season included the Duke in Rigoletto with Opera Omaha; Rodolfo in La bohème with Pensacola Opera and Opera Birmingham; Lieutenant Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly for his Opera Colorado debut; Cavaradossi with Opera Grand Rapids; and joining the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for its production of La bohème.

Recent performances include Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut with Minnesota Opera; Cavaradossi with Lyric Opera Baltimore and Pensacola Opera; Don José with Virginia Opera; Pinkerton with Glimmerglass Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City; Roberto in Puccini’s Le Villi with Spoleto Festival USA; Cassio in Otello with Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra under Fabio Mechetti; Rodolfo with Dayton Opera and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra; and a concert gala with Boston Landmarks Orchestra.

Mr. Vania’s previous highlights include singing Ettore in the world premiere of Kimmo Hakola’s La Fenice with Savolinna Festival; Don José with Lyric Opera of Kansas City; Duke with Opera Grand Rapids and Knoxville Opera; Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana with Utica Symphony Orchestra; Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Sacramento Opera; concert performances of Cavalleria Rusticana with Schenectady Symphony Orchestra; and Tosca with Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.

Logan Webber, Spoletta Logan Webber is a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has performed with The Colorado College Vocal Arts Symposium, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Opera Theater of the Rockies (Colorado), A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute (North Carolina), Ash Lawn Opera (Virginia), Chautauqua Opera (New York), the Children’s Opera (D.C.), the Rural Artists Project (Alaska), and the American Institute of Musical Studies (Austria). Mr. Webber has performed in many productions with the Maryland Opera Studio including Die Fledermaus, Così fan tutte, L’enfant et les sortilèges, and premiered the role of Justice Scalia in a new works reading of the opera Scalia/Ginsberg. This past year, Mr. Webber made his mainstage debut at the Princeton Festival as Rector Adams in Peter Grimes as well as Mr. Erlanson in Piedmont Opera’s production of A Little Night Music.

Logan received his B.M. from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where he was awarded a William R. Kenan Jr. Excellence Award. At this institution Mr. Webber studied under the direction of Dr. Marilyn Taylor, Chair of the Voice Department. Mr. Webber received his M.M. in Opera Performance from the University of Maryland at College Park under Delores Ziegler.
