P

iedmont Medical Center provides a $20,000 annual, academic scholarship to both Winthrop University and York Technical College.

This year, we congratulate Tierra Collins and Ashley Archie for being selected as the PMC Winthrop University Scholarship winners for the 2015-2016 academic year. Tierra is majoring in biology with plans to attend medical school. Ashley is a human nutrition major with aspirations of becoming a dietitian.

To be eligible for the PMC Winthrop University Scholarship, the student must be a resident of York County and identified by the University as having financial need. Piedmont Medical Center is very pleased to invest in the futures of these two deserving students. They will split the $20,000 scholarship and receive $10,000 each to use towards their education at Winthrop.

He also oversaw the expansion of the ED and the launch of a Level III NICU and neurosurgery program.

His deep commitment to quality and excellent patient care helped the hospital earn five consecutive A’s on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety score.

Prior to joining Piedmont, Bill served in several executive positions for Tenet, including CEO of Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, S.C. and chief financial offer and chief operating officer of Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

FORT MILL MEDICAL CENTER – A Brief Update.

A

s this publication goes to print, we are still awaiting a date from the SC Court of Appeals to hear oral arguments from both sides on the latest effort by Carolinas Healthcare System (CHS) to delay the Certificate of Need (CON) decision. We remain confident that the SC Court of Appeals will uphold the lower court’s decision to award the CON to Piedmont Medical Center and were pleased that they denied the request for an injunction from CHS. We continue to move forward with architectural drawing updates and other activities in order to be ready once the court makes a final ruling.

e are pleased with the progress on our PCU renovations and look forward to the next phases in the upcoming months! Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to continue to deliver excellent care for our patients through the natural inconveniences that occur during a construction project. In addition to the renovations to the Main Tower, we will begin work on an operating room (OR) renovation project upon receipt of the necessary certificate of need. The first phase of the OR project will include a 7600 square foot expansion that will house three large operating rooms and additional storage. The second phase of the project will include the conversion of one of these new rooms to serve as a hybrid OR.

BEDSIDE TRACHEOTOMY with Dr. Souheil Abdel Nour.

P

iedmont Medical Center is very fortunate to have a team of specially trained physicians that care for critically ill patients. Dr. Souheil Abdel Nour is an Intensivist at PMC and his passion for helping patients regain their health drives him to stay informed on the latest practices and techniques in his field.

Dr. Souheil Abdel Nour Tracheotomy, as a means of airway access, is one of the oldest surgical procedures documented, dating back approximately 4,000 years. According to the Mayo Clinic, a tracheotomy is “most commonly performed in an operating room with general anesthesia.” “Tracheotomy has often been looked at as equivalent to the end of life, or at least quality of life,” said Dr. Nour. “It is often seen as an irreversible procedure, but many patients can be weaned successfully.”

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, doctors may need to perform a tracheotomy for a number of different reasons. One common reason is to help people who need to be on a ventilator for more than a couple of weeks.

Ventilators are machines that support breathing. During a tracheotomy, a trach tube would be connected to the ventilator.

If a patient needs to have a tracheotomy performed, Dr. Nour says time is key. “Early tracheotomy reduces the need for sedation, and improves patient communication and overall quality of care. Recent studies have shown that early tracheotomy is associated with a higher likelihood of weaning from the ventilator, being discharged from the ICU within 28 days, and a trend towards a lower rate of pneumonia.”

A newer approach to tracheotomy procedures has seen increased interest from many institutions and universities over the last few years. This procedure has also gained widespread acceptance in many ICUs and trauma centers.

The percutaneous dilatational tracheotomy (PDT) was introduced Ciaglia et al in 1985. It offers a number of advantages in comparison to a more traditional, operative tracheotomy. One of the top advantages is the ability to perform this procedure at the patient’s bedside.

PDT has been noted to require less time to perform and improve the patient’s safety. That’s because the critically ill and ventilated patient would not need to be transported to the operating room in order to have the procedure done. “In addition, studies have demonstrated that PDT is associated with less risk of wound infections, bleeding complications, and overall mortality.”

Local family embraces child’s food allergies.

Parents should understand that although difficult, we can learn how to effectively manage food allergies, teach our children how to communicate their needs, and lead normal lives with food safety measures in place. Our kids want to be normal like everyone else.

erena and her husband Norris have two sons, Norris (age 11) and Noble (age 5). When Noble was just 10 months old, he experienced anaphylaxis (allergic reaction) after coming into contact with food that contained milk and tree nuts. He underwent allergy testing at 12 months and was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts.

Receiving such news could place a strain on any parent as they look to how food allergies will impact their child’s childhood.

“Oftentimes, kids with food allergies are excluded from school events and activities that involve food, class parties and bake sales for example,” said Serena. Keeping that in mind, the Williams family figured out a way that all children, including Noble, could participate in these activities. “We prepared and delivered treats with no allergens to the Rock Hill School Board and schools to demonstrate how treats without allergens still taste good and are safe for all children to eat.”

School isn’t the only place that a child’s food allergies could cause some concern. Holidays like Halloween can be potentially unsafe for kids with food allergies. “We participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project. This is a national campaign that raises awareness of food allergies and promotes safe inclusion of all trick-or-treaters during Halloween,” explained Serena. “Community members who participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project are asked to paint a teal pumpkin and provide non-food treats such as stickers, bubbles, trinkets, and toys for trick-or-treaters with food allergies or other children for whom candy is not an option.”

In addition to the Teal Pumpkin Project, the Williams family has made great strides in educating our community about food allergies. “We presented awareness information to City Council,

the Rock Hill School Board, the Rock Hill Wellness Committee, and several schools,” shared Serena. The family also requested that Governor Nikki Haley issue a proclamation declaring Food Allergy Awareness Week (May 8-14, 2016) throughout the State of South Carolina. Not only was that request fulfilled, Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols and the Rock Hill City Council also declared Food Allergy Awareness Week in Rock Hill.

“Our passion is driven by our desire to improve the quality of life of all children,” explained Serena. “Before we had a child with food allergies, we used to see awareness campaigns for different conditions. We would pause for a moment to learn about them, sympathize, and then go on with our busy lives.

Now that we have a child with multiple food allergies, we are beginning to understand the purpose of these campaigns.”

When asked about her family’s advice to other parents with children living with food allergies, Serena’s message was all about teamwork.

“One person, company, or organization can only do so much to meet the individual needs of kids with food allergies. However, when millions of people unite to understand the unique needs that exist, they can make a significant difference in the lives of many children. By working together, we can support, uplift, accommodate, include, and empathize; not because someone has asked, but because we understand those needs and genuinely care for those who have them.”

3D MAMMOGRAPHY Frequently Asked Questions.

Now that 3D mammography is available at the Women’s Diagnostic Center, you may have some questions.

We’ve prepared this short Q&A to address concerns you may have.

What is a 3D mammography breast exam?

3D mammography is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram.

During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast. Then, a computer produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist. They can scroll through images of your entire breast like pages of a book.

The additional 3D images make it possible for a radiologist to gain a better understanding of your breast tissue during screening and the confidence to reduce the need for follow-up imaging.

Why is there a need for tomosynthesis breast exams?

What are the benefits?

With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of your breast tissue in one flat image. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of normal breast tissue looking like an abnormal area.

By looking at the breast tissue in one millimeter slices, the radiologist can provide a more confident assessment. In this way, 3D mammography may identify cancers less evident with conventional 2D mammography. It also means there is less chance the radiologist will call you back later for a “second look,” because now they can see breast tissue more clearly.

What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram?

A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year. A diagnostic mammogram is performed if there is a breast complaint or abnormal finding on your screening mammogram.

What should I expect during a 3D mammography exam?

3D mammography complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time with the same system. There is no additional compression required, and it only takes a few more seconds longer for each view.

Is there more radiation dose?

Very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same amount as a traditional mammogram done on x-ray film.

Who can have a 3D mammography exam?

It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram. However, certain age groups and breast tissue types have been shown to have greater results than others. Please discuss this with your referring physician or one of our radiologists. 3D mammography screenings may have an additional charge, please consult with your policy coverage.

iedmont Medical Center EMS is a part of a new pilot program which offers assistance and education to members of our community who receive repeat care at Piedmont Medical Center.

The goal for the new Community Paramedic Program is to provide the tools and care our community needs; particularly to our friends and neighbors who are at high-risk of being readmitted to the hospital.

“This is a new type of service across the country,” says Michael Wallace, EMS Chief. “We’re one of the first public organizations to be chosen to pilot the program.”

The service will consist of a series of home visits focused on evaluating progression in the healing process. The speciallytrained paramedics will work with the patient to help them better manage their unique situation. Program leaders believe

Dozens of our friends and neighbors were screened at our four locations; Piedmont Medical Center Community Wellness Center, PMC Heart & Vascular Center, The Imaging Center at Baxter Village, and York Imaging Center.

We are also proud to support the Heart2Heart Foundation’s annual Heart Gala. Walkers joining the featured physician will have the opportunity to ask questions about their health, and enjoy the camaraderie of others in the community! Join us for Walk with a Doc at 8 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month, from March thru September.

In case of rain or inclement weather, Walk with a Doc will be cancelled. Any weather updates/cancellations will be posted on Piedmont’s Facebook page no later than 7 a.m. on the morning of the event.

First-time registrants will receive a free t-shirt and pedometer.
