AT PIEDMONT UNIVERSITY
Greetings from the School of Fine Arts and Communications at Piedmont University!
It is my pleasure to present the exciting Fine Arts schedule for the 2023-2024 season, and I am thrilled to announce that the arts at Piedmont are flourishing.
First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Wally Hinson for his exceptional leadership over his remarkable 30-year career. As I step into the role of Associate Dean, I feel deeply honored to be part of a fine arts tradition that dates back to Piedmont’s earliest years. Our artistic journey began with music performances in glee clubs and bands around 1910, followed by theatrical performances in the early 1920s. The visual arts soon followed, with art students crafting mountain furniture sold locally in the latter 1920s.
This year’s schedule boasts several highlights that promise to captivate your imagination. Theatre enthusiasts can look forward to a journey to 1980s New York’s East Village in the production of Rent. Music enthusiasts will be treated to the 35th year of Lessons and Carols, a cherished annual event. Additionally, the Art department invites you to explore the world of public art through the eyes of Nick Morris, the creator of The School Bus Graveyard. With such diverse offerings, we invite you to join us in these artistic endeavors.
The success of these events and nurturing of our student’s artistic talents rely on your support of the Fine Arts. Your support allows us to offer our students artistic experiences that will shape their future careers.
To aid us in our mission, I kindly request you to consider joining me and the other Friends of the Arts through a financial gift. Your contribution will significantly impact and help us continue providing quality events and opportunities to the Piedmont University community.
Let us come together and participate in the enriching journey of artistic exploration. I eagerly look forward to welcoming you to our events throughout this season!
Warmest Regards.
Christopher Kelly Associate Dean, School of Fine Arts & CommunicationsWHAT’S INSIDE

RENT $$
Directed by Bill Gabelhausen
Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. Rated M for mature audiences.

Directed by Kathy
BlandinThis is a powerful, true drama of six women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a country western singer booked by an unscrupulous agent to entertain the troops. The play portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn nation and ends as each leaves a personal token at the memorial wall in Washington.

RUMORS $$
Directed by John Spiegel
At a large, tastefully-appointed Snedens Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though it’s only a flesh wound, Charlie Brock’s self-inflicted injury sets off a series of events causing four couples to experience a severe attack of farce. As their tenth wedding anniversary party commences, Charlie lies bleeding in another room, and his wife
Myra is nowhere in sight. The first guests, lawyer Ken Gorman and his wife Chris, scramble to get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusion and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.
