The Season is upon us and Cape Town is definitely open to the tourists, after taking a 6 months break .

With international Travel resuming we did a feuture on the Cape Town international Airport to help guide the new rules and regulations.

The Two Oceans Aquarium situated at The V and A Waterfront is the only place in Cape Town to experience some amazing water life first hand .Celebrating 25 years in November here are some cool facts about the aquarium.

The city of Cape Town, the original maritime gateway to southern Africa, is an obvious site for a world-class aquarium. Few places in the world are in a more favourable position to feature the rich diversity of life found in two oceans, particularly in contrasting oceans such as the Indian and Atlantic. After eight years of research and 18 months of construction, the long-awaited Two Oceans Aquarium opened on the 13 November 1995. Longfin tuna Thunnus alalunga and snoek thyrsites atun are displayed for the first time in the world.

By 18 March 2004 the Aquarium, in collaboration with the AfriOceans Conservation Alliance, releases Maxine, a large (197kg) ragged-tooth shark Carcharias Taurus, back into the oceans. Maxine is the iconic ambassador for the Save our Seas Foundation M-Sea (Maxine Science, Education and Awareness) Programme. With assistance from South Africa’s leading shark experts, the MSea Programme provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the lifestyle of ragged-tooth sharks and to raise public awareness of the plight of sharks worldwide.

In 2008 the partnership with the City of Cape Town and in recognition of WAZA’S (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) Year of the Frog 2008, the Aquarium opened its third large-scale temporary exhibit hall in September 2008.

Frogs-Beyond the Pond is a themed and highly interactive gallery which immerses visitors in the world of frogs and invites them to ‘jump in’ to find out more about these quirky yet extremely threatened creatures. We released our fourth shark, Elle, back into the ocean as part of the Save our Seas Foundation MSea Programme.

In 2013, the Two Oceans Aquarium agreed to assist with an exciting long-term research project on broadnose sevengill sharks (Notorynchus cepedianus – also known as cowsharks). The project involves gaining a better understanding of their feeding, spatial (movement) and reproductive ecology, and ultimately aims to define their role as apex predators in South Africa. Sevengill sharks are being tagged with acoustic and pop-off archival satellite transmitters (PAT tags). PAT tags are programmed to collect and archive data such as depth and temperature before the tag releases from the animal at a pre-programmed time.

In 2017 After 20 years at the Aquarium, Yoshi the loggerhead turtle is successfully released back into the ocean. She was fitted with a satellite tag and begins her journey of discovery and adjustment back into the wild. The Two Oceans Aquarium joins the UN’s movement of Worlds Aquariums against marine litter and the Predator Exhibit is reopened after extensive renovations.

By 2019 the Marine Sciences Curriculum was introduced into three node schools.

Later in the same year, the curriculum was gazetted and made available for public comment. The Turtle Rescue Rehabilitation and Release Programme records a bumper year of turtle hatchling rescues – more than 200 are rescued, rehabbed and released. Two Oceans Aquarium hosts the 2019 South African Shark and Ray Symposium. The first Puppet Story book is translated into isiXhosa ,Two Oceans Aquarium wins Gold in the World Travel Market Africa Responsible Tourism awards for Best Responsible Attraction, and Silver in the Global Goals Reporting category.

In this year March, the Aquarium closes its door temporarily to the public in response to the Covid-19 pandemic which is sweeping across the globe. Essential staff remains working in the building, looking after the animals and life support systems but all other staff is asked to work from home. This is the first time in 24 years that the Aquarium has closed its doors in such a way. Yoshi reaches Australia and becomes the record holder for the longest animal migration ever recorded by a satellite tag. She has also gone on to lead the Australian scientists to previously unknown loggerhead feeding grounds.

A day visit is highly

recommended to experience this underwater fantasy world.

We were served a starter of rooibos gin and spiced mango cured cod lime aioli, coupled with a passion fruit dressing of jalapeno and coriander. Immediately it was like the stars were let loose in your mouth with the balanced infusion of these flavours on the taste buds. The main course of Chicken Kiev, a double chicken breast panko crumbed and stuffed with double cheese, then fried crispy brown and served with a creamy parmesan and truffle mushroom sauce was also truly delicious and comes highly recommended. Satisfaction and presentation are the two words that come to mind with the food that was prepared and served to the highest quality, which makes for the perfect lunch meal.

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Cape Town International Airport is Africa’s most award winning airport! As Africa's 3rd largest airport it processes over 10 million passengers annually. Cape Town Airport is located in Matroosfontein, approximately 12 miles (20 km) southeast from Cape Town city centre.With international travel set to resume following the ban on international travel at the start of South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown in March, all systems are in place – all the Airports Company South Africa is waiting for is the list of countries from which visitors will be allowed.

Cape Town International Airport is ready to resume international travel, says the CEO of Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), Mpumi Mpofu. During lockdown, the airport’s income had been “decimated”, she said. With international travel resuming in October, things are looking up. “We are good to go”. There have been applications from airlines to land in South Africa, but the airlines were also waiting for the approved list of countries of origin.

Cape Town International Airport, along with OR Tambo and King Shaka International, will be the only SA airports allowed to accept foreign travellers when international travel resumes on 1 October, said President Cyril Ramaphosa. Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) was named Africa’s Leading Airport for the third consecutive year at the 26th World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2019. The gala awards ceremony was attended by senior executives from major travel companies, operators and destinations and representative of CTIA, Deidre Davids, Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs, CTIA was in Mauritius to receive the award on behalf of the airport. "Once again Cape Town International Airport is honoured to receive this esteemed industry award.

The World Travel Awards are globally recognized as the ultimate independently assessed travel accolade, so being named Africa’s Leading Airport for the third consecutive year is both a testament to the ongoing hard work and commitment to excellence demonstrated by all staff at this airport. This award is also viewed as a challenge for us not to rest on our past achievements but to continue to work hard to remain an award-winning airport," said Cape Town International Airport, General Manager, Deon Cloete. The World Travel Awards serve to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry and are voted for by travel and tourism professionals and consumers worldwide. Cape Town International Airport is managed by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and is the third largest airport in Africa and global travellers continue to regard Cape Town as a destination of choice. Over the past few years Cape Town International Airport has shown sustained growth in international passenger numbers with a 9.6 percent increase in 2018.

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT For the first time in December 2016, the airport exceeded the 10 million passenger-peryear milestone. This was repeated again in December 2017 and 2018 when passenger numbers significantly exceeded the 10 million passenger mark. Through partnerships such as Cape Town Air Access, the airport has seen 15 new routes and 19 route expansions since 2015, and a doubling of international seat capacity by 1,5 million seats.

The airport has several key infrastructure projects planned over the next five years, at an investment of R7 billion which will include: 1. The refurbishment of the domestic arrivals terminal 2. The expansion of the international terminal 3. A new realigned runway worth R3,93 billion which will allow for the future expansion of the terminal, an increase in the airport’s per hour landing and departures from 30 to 45 aircraft movements and the handling of new generation large aircraft such as the Boeing 747-800 or the A380 aircrafts. "There is going to be some disruption to the normal operations of the airport, but we promise that it’s going to be worth it, improving on our infrastructure forms part of being a leading airport," concluded Cloete.

Things to know regarding Post lockdown arrival and departures at South African airports : 1 How will the airlines ensure that seats are deep cleaned after every flight?

3. Will baggage handlers wear full Personal Protective Equipment because they could pass the virus from one bag to another? All baggage handlers will wear full Personal Protective Equipment when assisting passengers and handling baggage.

4.How safe is luggage from contamination during loading and offloading?

Airports Company South Africa adheres to the strictest health and safety protocols.

All baggage will be fully sanitised and baggage handlers will wear complete Personal Protective Equipment. Bags must be wrapped as an additional safety measure.

5.Will screening be done on all flights? Passengers will be screened upon entering the

Masks will also be sold at vending machines within the airport building 8.How many hours before departure must a passenger be at the airport? KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDEN

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. For under R100 you can visit this world acclaimed heritage site ! The Garden is open every day from 08h00 to 19h00 during summer (Sep-Mar), 08h00 to 18h00 during winter (AprAug).The Conservatory is open every day from 09h00 to 17h00.The Curator’s Office is open Monday to Friday only, from 07h30-16h20, except on public holidays.Picnics are allowed in Kirstenbosch, but you are not permitted to take chairs, tables, umbrellas, tents etc. into the Garden. Braais / barbecues are not allowed. Picnic hampers and/or takeaways are available from the Kirstenbosch Tea Room and Moyo restaurant.

Kirstenbosch is a No Bins Garden, rubbish bins are not present in most parts of the Garden. Visitors are expected to take their refuse with them when they leave the Garden and dispose of it responsibly.

Dogs are not allowed in the developed Garden or the natural area immediately surrounding the Garden as far as the upper contour path. Dogs may be brought in via Rycroft Gate (Gate 3), where they may be walked up to the 300 m contour path via the path through the Seed Orchard/Stock Beds. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, and dog walkers must pick up and dispose of their dog’s litter. Visitors caught breaking these rules may be fined.The Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway is a new curved steel and timber bridge that winds and dips its way through and over the trees of the Arboretum. Inspired by a snake skeleton, and informally called ‘The Boomslang‘ (meaning tree snake), it is a low-maintenance, low-impact sculptural raised walkway.The Walkway takes the visitor from the forest floor into and through the trees and bursts out above the canopy, giving spectacular panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, Garden and Cape Flats. This walkway is 130 m long, narrow and slender, with a few wider view-point areas, and lightly snakes its way through the canopy, in a discreet, almost invisible way. The walkway is crescentshaped and takes advantage of the sloping ground; it touches the forest floor in two places, and raises visitors to 12 m above ground. It is more than just a traditional boardwalk – like a snake, it winds and dips. The Arboretum is situated between the Protea Garden, Cycad Amphitheatre, the Dell, Mathews Rockery and the Concert Lawn. The Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway was built in 2013-14 to celebrate the centenary of Kirstenbosch in 2013, and opened to the public on 17 May 2014. There is no additional fee to walk on the Boomslang, other than the normal Garden entry fee.
