Oscars Ahoy!

Oh, hello 2024. Hope everyone had a groovy Christmas and new year and you managed to see some good films.

Awards season is upon us and will be for a while given there are so many of them. How much notice does the wider world really take of all the backslapping? Certainly the media loves a good red carpet parade, and I always feel more comfortable watching the BAFTAs than the Oscars, way too much emoting for my uptight British taste, it makes feel a little embarrassed for everyone.

Historically the Oscars are as famous for the films they didn’t give awards to, as the ones they did. Forrest Gump prevented Shawshank from winning best picture, Crash instead of Brokeback Mountain? A travesty. Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock were never honoured for the films they made, arguably two of the most influential film makers in history. Who remembers Ordinary People?

Robert Redford’s competent but rather dull family drama that beat Raging Bull to both director and picture in 1981, surely another travesty? I say all this as a BAFTA voter myself, having to choose between Oppenheimer and Barbie. Apples and oranges if we are honest.

In the end it’s probably a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing and ultimately less fun than Eurovision. However, for the less ardent cinemagoer the lists the awards season produce are a good guide to films you may have missed and ultimately that’s a good thing.

Having been involved with cinema, literally, my whole life I learnt early on that people love to talk about movies. Wherever I am in the world in whatever situation everyone has an opinion, and everyone loves to talk about how films have been markers in their life. Once they find out my profession conversation rarely dries up, cinema still has the power to engage.

Which makes me a lucky boy, to be serving up all these future memories day after day. There really is nothing like sitting in a cinema and being transported somewhere else for a few hours.

I hope you enjoy this new brochure and all the great stuff we have in store for you both in the cinema and at the restaurant over the coming months.

Every Saturday morning at 10.30am we screen a family friendly film.

They feature a mix of recent blockbusters and classic family films, all rated U and PG and at pocket money prices starting from £3.50. This is a fun time and safe space for children, adults may only attend these screenings if they are accompanying children.

Children over 10 can attend a Kids Club screening without an adult present, but the cinema does not provide dedicated supervision.

Relaxed Screenings On Sunday mornings we usually screen our Kids Club film as a relaxed screening. The lights will be brighter and the sound will be lower and you are free to move around the auditorium. These screenings are suitable for people with sensory issues.
