ALEX KATZ was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927 to Russian parents who had an interest in the arts.

Katz attended The Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan from 1946-49. His first solo show was at Roko Gallery in New York City in 1954.

Characterized by literal, yet expressive portrayals of people, Katz often uses his wife Ada as a subject.

His figures are shown in a flattened manner suggestive of a Polaroid snapshot.

Works by Katz can be found in over 100 public collections.

Notably, The Met, New York; The MOMA, New York; the Israel Museum, Israel, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Japan, the Nationalgalerie, Germany and the Tate Gallery, England, among others.

Katz has lived in New York City since 1968 but spends his summers in Lincolnville, Maine.
