CV Reg’l S&T Week kicks off in Cebu CEBU CITY, June 21 (PIA) -- How can technology help people and businesses? The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Central Visayas kicked off June 20 the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) in Cebu under the theme ―Science for the People‖ to best highlight what science can do for people and business. DOST-7 Regional Director Edilberto Paradela in a press conference said the RSTW aims to emphasize the importance of science and technology (S&T) in bringing science to the people and in achieving sustainable and inclusive development. In a joint undertaking with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), a three-day conference and expo is conducted to showcase the services and products of the country’s scientists, engineers, and researchers as well as local products from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Innovators and tech providers have been invited to participate in the three-day event with lined-up activities such as the Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE), Technology Transfer Day, Technology and Innovation Conference, Central Visayas Health Research and Innovation Conference and exhibit of the DOST-7 programs, projects and services as well as the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program. The DOST, together with the CCCI, stressed that this year’s RSTW is about the concept of bringing science for the people, inspiring them to grow livelihood businesses by taking advantage of the increasing growth of S&T as well as translating health research from basic science to meaningful outcomes. In the same presscon, DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Rowena Guevara urged industries to give inputs on their ideas to assist government researchers to come up with useful products. ―The idea transfer from industries to the government helps

a lot so researchers will create useful products,‖ said Guevara lauding the initiative of the DOST-7 to partner with the CCCI. Collaboration between the government and the business sector is important for the government to know the kinds of technology that are needed by the industries. Guevara further said the agency is also offering technology assistance to MSMEs. DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Brenda Nazareth-Manzano also explained about their rent to own program for MSMEs where the latter can avail of their equipment. MSMEs are given the option to purchase the equipment to use and expand their businesses using the appropriate technology. Another program promoted by the DOST is the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), where S&T is utilized to power MSMEs. The exhibits along the hallway of the venue was a showcase of the successful communities and MSMEs being assisted by the DOST. Among them were Larena Triad in Siquijor and Bohol Bee Farm that sells food products using technology in their business operations. Melanie Ng, president of the CCCI, said the business sector considers technology as a helpful tool in bringing the businesses to the next level. She added that this coincides with their vision in the chamber. Other panelists present during the press conference were Charles Kenneth Co from the CCCI and Cebu Business Month 2017 overall chairman; Engr. Edgar Garcia, director of DOST’s Technology and Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI); and Richard Burgos, director of DOST’s Science and Technology Information Institute (STII). Guevara commended the DOST-7 for being the first region to launch the RSTW this year. (fcr/Jan Karla Madrio, UP-Cebu intern/ PIA7)

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, June 21 (PIA) – This year’s Pintados Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals is expected to be more colourful, energetic and competitive where nine festival contingents from various municipalities in the region will join the festivals. In a press conference, former Leyte governor and now Palo mayor, Remedios L. Years later, it was merged with the Kasadyaan Festival chaired then by now mayor Petilla. ASEAN remains resilient Jaime S. Cabag, Jr. ILOILO CITY, June 20 (PIA6) –The Association of Southeast Asian Nations as a community has been resilient, enjoying peace, security and stability though constant dialogue, consultation and confidence building through consensus, according to Asst. Secretary Ma. Helen de la Vega of the Office of ASEAN Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs. This is a matter that has been under-appreciated in many circles, said De la Vega, who flew in here together with other national and foreign dignitaries to grace the ASEAN High Level Public Symposium on Building ASEAN: Political Security Community and Regional Resiliency held June 18 at the Iloilo Convention Center. Resiliency is the ability of nations to face external threats and challenges by remaining steadfast in their identity and strong in developmental processes in the political, economic, social, educational, and cultural fields, said De la Vega. Also gracing the event was His Excellency Dr. Purin Pitsuwan, former foreign minister of Thailand and ASEAN Secretary General, who was there when the organization was founded on August 8, 1967. He recalled the fundamental premise on which ASEAN was born wherein the members vowed to bind themselves together through sacrifices and efforts toward prosperity, security, political stability within the emerging context of globalization. The region had its share of challenges including the Asian financial crisis wherein the whole region bore its impact but which also became a learning experience that taught member nations to be more cohesive.

He pointed out that for ASEAN to achieve prosperity into the future, member nations must work together to secure the peace, security and resiliency of the region. Organized by the ASEAN Research Institute for Strategic Studies and Enterprise (ARISE), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and EAST ASIA, and University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV), the symposium brought together prominent and respected international scholars, academics, specialists, practitioners, researchers as well as top level government officials and key ASEAN Secretariat officials. It is also the contribution of the organizers to the celebration of the 50th ASEAN founding anniversary and recognition of the hosting of ASEAN 2017 by the Philippines. (JSC/PIA6)
