Magnus Bergekrans Managing Director Paradise Beach Kamala Co.,Ltd. And Cape Sienna Phuket Hotel & Villas

W

e recently interviewed Mr Magnus Bergekrans, the Managing Director of the new Cape Sienna Phuket Hotel & Villas, and were quite surprised to find that for a man who is in control of such an organization, he is although scrupulously polite, a surprisingly quiet and calm executive. Hailing from Sweden, Mr Bergekrans first came to Asia 30 years ago as a businessman based in Hong Kong. He used to spend his vacations in Phuket and after 10 years decided to move here, believing that the beautiful, but then pretty much undeveloped island, had enormous potential for growth and was just the golden opportunity he sought. Although he got off to a slowish start, his instinct has proven correct and gradually his empire grew. “I started with a restaurant at first, then progressed to small guesthouses and billing businesses. Gradually we grew and grew into the hotel business.” Says Mr Bergekrans. “Actually, the idea for the hotel came originally from my nephew with whom I discussed the possibilities. I have to admit, I was pretty well hooked

by his argument so we decided to go into it together.” Said Mr Bergekrans. Cape Sienna Phuket Hotel & Villas was designed as a retreat for the cosmopolitan urban dweller to really ‘get away from it all’. The architecture and style of the resort is designed to attract an eclectic clientele who are used to nothing but the best, and expect excellence in every way. Perched on a headland on ‘Millionaires Mile’ at the southern end of Kamala Bay, the whole complex, hotel, villa accommodations, bars and other facilities, all have beautiful sea views and, as it is on the west coast, magnificent sunsets. “I think it is the unique location and our first-rate service that will make us different from other hotels.” Explains Mr Bergekrans, “No matter where you are in the hotel, from the swimming pool, through the 146 rooms to the Sky Bar, you have an uninterrupted sea view, and that, coupled with the sea breeze blowing off the Andaman Sea makes it a place that people will love.” “In the present economic climate, we, like most people in this industry, have to put a lot of effort into marketing. We have a sales office in Bangkok and have joined fair trades etc., but as newcomers, our first task is to generate public awareness as to our existence. We are concentrating on getting our message

to the right potential clientele; giving as much information as possible about who we are, what we have to offer, and what they will get for their money.” Mr Bergekrans continued by saying that ‘value for money’ is what concerns him the most, realizing that when selecting a hotel, this is a significant factor for the public nowadays. “It is not easy at the moment,” he admitted, “There is a lot of

“I think it is the unique location and our firstrate service that will make us different from other hotels.” competition in this industry which is really giving us a challenge. We have to make sure that we are able to offer something very special and develop a reputation that is second to none among our visitors. We want them to come back, and to spread the word about us, so we must make sure we have done everything within our powers to be truly 5-Star.” Helping to build the 5-Star image is a poolside club and bar, a health club including a gym and yoga facilities. A spa, gourmet restaurant, Sky bar, snooker room, gallery, 30 metre pool, conference room, tennis court and the ‘Chambre Separe’ a private room for functions and parties. “Although we are not yet 100% complete, I am hopeful that we will have plenty of bookings in the coming high season. I am sure we all want to see Phuket’s tourist industry come alive again, after all, it is not just to the benefit of individual businesses, but it encompasses the economic well being of the whole island.” Phuketindex.com would not disagree!

What happens when a Financier

turns into a Restaurateur

Dr

Roberto Ugolini is a 53 year old native of Italy who gave up the game of managing other peoples’ money and assets, pulled up his roots and decided to invest in himself by starting afresh in the catering business here in Thailand and more particularly in Phuket. Dr Ugolini started his working life with UBS (Union Bank of Switzerland) specializing in wealth management, investment banking, asset management and business banking for clients. 15 years ago he moved to Bangkok as Resident Manager for an Italian Banking Company in Silom Road and stayed there for 4 years, still involved with the management of wealth.

Eventually however, he reached a turning point and left the world of finance. Coming to Phuket on holiday, he bought 3 units at Royal Phuket Marina with the intention of opening the ‘Limoncello’ restaurant. “We had to move fast to get the place open in time or the launch of th e R o y a l P h u k e t M a r i n a ’ s international brochure.” explained Roberto, “Luckily, I got a lot of help and advice from my friend, Danoff Bille , w h o i s t h e o w n e r o f t h e original Limoncello in Bangkok.” Limoncello is a refreshingly bright and elegant restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating located in Royal Phuket Marina, the creation of another Italian entrepreneur, Gulu Lalvani. However, although established as recently as 2007, already it is going to change: “After two years we intend to improve the restaurant,

but still maintain our standard of top quality Italian food for lunch and dinner, together with a selection of superb wines. We will also change the name to ‘Ugolini’ my family name.” Although this new restaurant is now well established still Dr Ugolini is not satisfied. About a year ago he took the opportunity to buy ‘Watermark’, another restaurant located in Boat Lagoon Marina next door. It was a bold move in a time of economic downturn but as he explains: “The Water mark has been established since 2002 and is a strong company. Like Limoncello it is a dockside brasserie with stunning marina views but

in October, we will open a ‘Watermark’ in Rome. This will be closely followed by more Watermarks in Milan and Paris. ‘Ugolini’will be our trade name for Italian cuisine in Asia and ‘Watermark’ our name for Thai food in Europe. Although a newcomer to the catering business, Roberto is backed by excellent support from more experienced restaurateurs and staff, and certainly seems to have found the secret of success in enjoying his new vocation.

is also a winner of Thailand Tattler Best Restaurants awards in 2004 – 2008 and the quality of service and food keeps locals and tourists coming back on a regular basis. “In fact,” continued Dr Ugolini, “we intend to expand our operations not only in Thailand but globally. We will open more Italian restaurants in Cambodia and Vietnam with the name ‘Ugolini’, and later this year,

“I do this for my pleasure. My restaurants are places where I can invite my friends to come and enjoy good food and wine.” For those of you not too familiar with the location of the two marinas – and the restaurants, they are right next door to each other on the east coast of Phuket, about 7km north of Phuket town on the Thepkrasatri Road. Either brasserie is well worth a visit, even if only to view the yachts whilst savouring the delightful food and drink.

The

Sweet Escape Phuket, the island of dreams or of dreams come true. Can anyone deny that this archipelago is nirvana for lovers?

The Pearl of the Andaman, with more than any couple could wish for. The beaches, the island, the clear blue sea, the people, the beauty and the lush forests make it a haven for love. Once it was a romantic place only because of its unsophisticated natural splendor, now that beauty is enhanced with some of the most exciting venues for lovers imaginable. Phuket has matured, but is still at the age of Romeo and Juliet in its heart. For some, just being together is enough, but how much enriched is that bond when surrounded by luxury? What follows is a compendium of the best the Phuket has to offer its young at heart romantically inclined visitor (or resident).

The ultimate getaway where city life hits the beach

Cape Sienna Gentlemen,

She’s beautiful, the woman of your dreams, Aphrodite at the Waterhole, Venus Incarnate, Helen of Troy, and downright fascinating. But how do you get her, or if you’ve got her, how do you keep her?

Ladies,

This guy’s a bit of a bore, bald as a coot, no Michelangelo’s Statue of David, loves beer and football, doesn’t own a Mercedes, and thinks Harleys are great.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Take a chance, splash out, give it a go, live dangerously and spend a weekend, week, or month at Cape Sienna in Kamala, Phuket. If that does not do the trick and make her love you for eternity, nothing will. If ever a place was made to create a love affair and forget that bald pate, this is it. Imagine the impact on your image gentlemen, as you pull back then settle her into her chair in the VANILLA Sky view lounge that seems to be hanging in space. Imagine ladies, the feeling of being made to feel that special.

Set on the headland at the southern end of Kamala Bay the Cape Sienna Resort combines the sophistication of the city with the beauty and harmony of nature. With 98 Sea view studio rooms, 44 Sea view Jacuzzi deluxe, 2 sea view Jacuzzi Suite, 2 Penthouses and 9 Sea view Pool Villas. – all with a west facing sea view, this is a resort that is guaranteed to bring you happiness. In a world full of superlatives, every one could be applied to Cape Sienna. Each type of room has its own style of luxury, and every member of staff can rise to match that luxury. In short. Paradise on Earth.

ocated in the north-west corner of the island at the southern end of Nai Yang beach, this haven for lovers is spread out over several acres of land and is surrounded by tropical forest on three sides, with one of Phuket’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches on the fourth. The immaculately landscaped gardens give a feeling that nothing in nature has been disturbed, yet every conceivable luxury is at catered for. Step out from your room, villa or private pavilion and you could easily imagine that you are in a tranquil Cotswald village at the height of summer, (but without the tourists) so perfect is the serenity. If you fail to be moved by the peace and beauty of this place, then romance is simply not in your soul.

Designed by Bill Bensley, relaxation is the name of the game, but there is always something unusual to pique your curiosity. Be it the spanner cutlery, the screw toilet paper holder, or the quirky signs, it’s all attention to detail which is designed to take your mind off the world you left behind outside. There are 277 rooms in total, with six styles of accommodation ranging from The Kelly Quarters, through The Pearl Bed Suites, Plantation Villas, Private Pavilions (Garden and Pool) to The Pearl Shells. All are exceptional, though the latter are somewhat more exceptional than the former, and all have their individual characteristics. How about a bath outside of your room, under a bucket shower that feels like rain? For nature lovers a cycle ride trough the nearby Nature Reserve might be just the thing, but for lovers of another kind the Indigo Pearl reeks of passion. There are three swimming pools including an ‘Adults Only’ pool. (Bet that’s got your attention.) Naturally a self contained village like this has its restaurants and like the rooms, variety abounds with six choices including Thai, Tapas, and a Grill. his iconic property development is quite simply excellent in terms of design and craftsmanship. A relaxed contemporary interior mixes perfectly with the beautiful gardens in which sit the Villas.

Layan Pool Villas is a place in which it is possible to truly forget the outside world. We all love the gaiety and boisterousness of Patong but sometimes we also need a break from it, and such respite can be found here. Conveniently located in the Pasak and Layan area north of Cherngtalay, Bang Tao Beach is 2 minutes walk, whilst a world class golf course at Laguna is a very short drive. Needless to say, excellent restaurants abound in the area.

The Villas themselves are spacious with a kitchenette for breakfast, a beautiful bathroom, swimming pool view and a sitting area where you can enjoy the sun on one of the magnificent day beds. Newlyweds in particular love this area as it provides an atmosphere of romance and privacy in a luxurious rustic sort of setting. Plenty of opportunity for a bit of secluded canoodling interspersed with a bit of risqué entertainment in Phuket’s night spots for the odd 5 minutes when you need a break from all that lovey-dovey stuff. Try it. We bet you’ll come back!

Mom Tri's Villa Royale a Real Boutique Resort

More than Words....

F

or most of us a visit to a 5-star hotel/resort is not a regular weekend affair, more something reserved for a once or twice a year treat, and selection can be, in the end, a bit of a lottery. But what about that (hopefully) once in a lifetime occasion, something like a honeymoon? For that, a lottery ticket is simply not good enough. If you want to be assured of staying in a place you will remember for eternity, you need to go to a place where they know how to treat you like a king (or queen) and what better guarantee for that than to book into a hotel actually owned by a member of the Thai royal family? Mom Tri’s Villa Royale fits the bill in both credentials and in reality. Set on a promontory between two beaches, Kata Noi and Kata Yai, the Thai architecture blends in with the beautifully landscaped gardens perfectly. With only 27 suites it is exclusive to say the least. Furnished to a standard that is unbelievably perfect in its elegance, each suite has a balcony with a fantastic sea view, is extremely spacious and is absolutely private. The restaurant is unrivalled in its selection of fresh mouth-watering food and fine wine coupled with

a level of service that shows its royal lineage, right down to the finest detail. The staff are ever smiling and unbelievably discrete and efficient. Don’t leave it to chance, if you want a lasting memory, visit Mom Tri’s Villa Royale. We promise you will never forget sipping champagne on your private balcony as the sun sets, sampling regal cuisine at the restaurant in an atmosphere of quiet ardor, walking hand in hand as the moonlight glints on the water below, and retiring to the bedchamber with nothing but love in your heart. P.S. You don’t have to be on honeymoon, but it helps.

igh above the shore where the gentle waves of the Andaman wash the beaches of southern Phang Nga Bay, hidden from the open ocean and nestling on the lea side of the gently rolling hills of Phuket is the once in a lifetime dream resort of Sri panwa. This is a lover’s haven, the sort of place that you should go to only once, and only if you are truly in love. To go there twice would be a betrayal of that love, though the temptation to repeat the experience may be just too irresistible.

taste. There is a fitness centre, jogging track, tennis, biking, meditation and yoga, scuba diving and of course, swimming in one of the pools.

The thing that makes this place different, the thing that will make it linger in your memory and make you long to go back is the sheer perfection of it all. Forty individual villas giving blessed privacy and yet at the same time unmatched luxury and comfort; all set in a beautiful lush forest, each villa with a sea view enriched by the dramatic splendor of a tropical sunrise and sunset.

On the honeymoon island of Phuket, Sri panwa excels.

Who says Romance is Dead? A short lover’s stroll, hand in hand, along the coast road north from Patong, with the white surf pounding and the moon shining on the water below, takes you to the Acqua Restaurant, another one of Phuket’s lesser known trysts for the love smitten connoisseur. Here is Italian food at its best with a fine selection of wine to go with it. Although perfect for the couple who want privacy and intimacy before moving elsewhere to maybe jump on each others bones, the restaurant can also cater for larger parties, perhaps before they too move on to jump etc., etc (as consenting adults of course). Whatever the ultimate intentions for the evening, Acqua can lend just the right atmosphere to get things off to the right start. The Italian fare is inventive, sophisticated and a real taste of Italy. Chef Alessandro Frau loves to experiment and his dishes are innovative yet retain the original flavour of the fresh top-quality ingredients. From sophisticated cocktail to yummy desert, the food and drink titillate the palette perfectly as does the wide-ranging selection of wines, all guaranteed to fuel your passions to fever pitch. The Acqua décor is a brilliant white throughout with furnishings that compliment it perfectly. Whether dining inside or on the terrace, the ambiance is highly conducive to Cupid’s attentions. So linger not gentlemen, gird up your loins, get ready for consummation, and take thy love to Acqua. Open 4pm to 11pm no reservations are necessary, but a high libido is recommended.

The Restaurant to make you wonder

P

icture sitting under the stars with your lover (this is Phuket after all) surrounded by nature, eating exquisite Italian food (the nation and language of love) before sailing off into the sunset on your romantic white yacht (well……. Maybe a Honda Jazz). An over-indulgent imagination perhaps, but it’s no exaggeration to state that the Davinci restaurant, situated on Sai Yuan Road in the quiet village of Nai Harn can titillate even the most dormant mind and more importantly, taste bud. It’s almost two restaurants in one: outside, dining alfresco under the aforesaid stars, or inside, where the décor imbues a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Despite the

sophistication, and if you have reached that stage in your relationship where the appearance of little rug-rats is damping your amorous side somewhat, fear not, there is a children’s play area. So, the old gazing dreamily into each others eyes routine can be rejuvenated, at least for a while. Davinci’s is a tastefully (no pun etc.) decorated restaurant where the food is really superb. Naturally enough, pasta is a specialty, but of equal distinction are the Australian Beef dishes or the local seafood such as White Snapper. Only the best imported, or if bought in Phuket, fresh every day, ingredients are used to ensure that a very high standard is maintained. Equally as important in giving the clientele a memorable experience,

the kind that makes you go back, is the service. The staff are discrete but well trained and pretty well expert on all of the dishes on offer, so if you are not sure about anything – just ask. Chef John’s standards are of the highest and this permeates through to the whole atmosphere of Davici’s – except to the prices, the only aspect that fails to reach elevated proportions.

What is your favourite food? I am a very easy going sort of man so basic foods from mother earth appeal to me. Sliced spaghetti with beans cooked farmer style is a favourite.

How do you feel when you put your chef’s hat on? Taller of course!

If the world was going to the end in one minute, what would be the last meal you would like to eat before you were dead? It is? Oh dear! Not much time to prepare it then so I better make it simple. How about Fettucine with Tiger Prawns in Limoncello sauce? I love the taste of lemon.

As you can imagine from his background, he demands and achieves the highest standards and this excellence is apparent in the demeanor and service of his staff. “Les Anges Patisserie is the Angels Bakery.” Explained Peter as we sat on the boardwalk sipping hot Latte coffee. “I think Patisseries are almost an essential part of living. When visiting friends, at weddings, on Valentine’s Day, or on many other occasions, we turn to cakes and sweet things to give as presents. We love to spoil the ones we love, and what more romantic way than with a delicious sweet profiterole?

nd when you take the woman in your life out for the evening, is your idea of romance fish and chips with loads of vinegar eaten with your fingers whilst watching the big match of UEFA Champions League? Or are you a little more refined? Do you meet her with a rose in your hand, escort her to your car and the restaurant of her choice where awaits champagne on ice and a reserved table for two overlooking the Andaman Sea? A delicate 3 course meal with ne’er a hint of beer, followed by……, and complete the sentence. What about a surprise for your goddess with a visit to Royal Phuket Marina and ‘Les Anges’. Here you can totally wreck her diet with a selection of cakes and chocolates that are simply as divine as is she. Finish the evening with another glass of champagne with strawberry mousse or, if you think you will need our senses at peak performance for the rest of the night, maybe coffee and biscotti. (But get there before it closes at 10pm.) Les Anges Patisserie was established in 2005 to cater to not only the

residents of the marina but also to those people working and/or residing in Phuket who appreciate the finer things in life. The style of the patisserie is a representation of a love of all the arts, and the décor is in the style of Art Nouveau. In particular, the influence of Alphonse Mucha, predominantly in his Parisian period, is very much in evidence. But it is not just a place to wind up the perfect evening. The range of freshly baked bread, cakes, cookies, sandwiches and salads make Les Anges an enchanting place at any time of day. The owner/manager of Les Anges is Peter Webber who started his career in London at the renowned Inn on the Park in 1984, followed by the even more distinguished Savoy. Succumbing to the lure of the East, he moved to Bangkok and was no less than the Chef Patisserie at the famous Oriental Hotel for a period of 12 years. Upon the opening, Peter was given the opportunity to show off is talents in a joint venture with Gulu Lalvani, the developer of the entire project. Now, he is now firmly ensconced in Phuket and

“I love Rum Baba; it tastes absolutely gorgeous.” He concluded, but unluckily for us, on the day we chose to visit, he did not have any Rum Baba for us to sample (he’d probably scoffed the lot before we got there). Never mind we thought, there are always the other things in life like love, romance, and passion. But how much more complete they are with a first class patisserie in which to indulge them. Tooth & Gum Care Keep your teeth for a lifetime

Y

our gum is older than your teeth by about six months, and although the teeth get replaced after a few years, the tooth/gum relationship is basically, hopefully, a lifelong partnership. In looking after the one, you have to look after the other. They are Romeo and Juliet, Troilus and Cressida, sometimes with the same tragic ending. Oral health extends much further into general health than most people realize. A healthy mouth = a happy smile and easy chewing which aids digestion. An unhealthy mouth = self-consciousness, bad breath, and sometimes poor speech. More than 80% of Thai people have some form of tooth decay and/or gum disease. If you don’t want to join this unhappy band – read on.

Plaque. The major cause tooth decay and gum disease Most mouth woes are caused by plaque, so what is it exactly? Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth and gum. Following a meal or snack, the bacteria in plaque releases acids that attack tooth enamel to weaken it, which eventually leads to tooth decay.

42

www.phuketindex.com

Plaque that is not removed by thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can harden into a calculus or tartar, a substance that irritates the gum, making them red, tender or to bleed easily. It can damage bone and destroy the tissues around your teeth and leads to periodontal (gum) disease that is a major cause of tooth loss in adults.

Health & Beauty Health Care Taking good care of teeth and gum Not many people realize the consequences when they face a tooth or gum problem. A few will go to the dentist and seek professional advice but most, all too often, just take a painkiller and press on regardless. The trouble is, unlike taking a pill for a headache which normally has no lasting effects, taking a pill for toothache merely screens the problem which is likely to get worse.

Prevention is the best defense and in this case prevention takes the form of regular brushing – at least twice a day, and flossing. Ideally, you should brush after ever meal or snack, but as a practicality, once in the morning and once at bed time will suffice. Back this up with flossing at least once every day to ensure the tartar is removed from the areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Eat a balanced healthy diet, keeping snacks to a minimum and visit your dentist every six months for a check-up and professional cleaning. Your dentist is your Oral Guru. He or she will know what is best for you as an individual to have healthy teeth and a charming smile for the whole of your life.

More than just a means to assuage the five senses, Sukko is a spa that gives guidance for a healthier lifestyle combined with a unique Thai cultural experience.

The Thai Way Welcome to Planet Earth. Planet Earth is presently dominated by a species called Homo Sapiens, or Humans or, more commonly, Man (Sorry feminists, but you can’t deny it). Man has created a thing called time and measures it using a natural phenomenon called day. One day can be measured as the time period between when the sun is in the same position in the sky as it was the last time it was there – if you see what I mean. Normally there is a period of darkness called night in this phase, but that’s irrelevant. What matters is that one day has been further divided into 24 hours based upon no natural occurrence whatsoever. Why 24 hours and not 10? No idea.

Anyway, the point is, of these 24 hours time should be allocated to various events essential to the well being of man like eating, drinking, sleeping and going to Bangla Road. Unfortunately for the majority of Humans, also included must be a disagreeable thing called work. Now work is essential but can be addictive and so an antidote is a necessity if man is to maintain balance in his (or her) life. There are many different ways to achieve a balance, but probably on of the best is to completely and totally relax in a thing called a Spa and one of the best is right here in Phuket Town. Sukko Cultural Spa and Wellness excels as a place to unwind, relax and recharge.

ukko has a wide range of treatments and activities to reach out to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs. The s e encompass Thai and international techniques and include massage, body pampering, facial treatments, foot reflexology and yoga; all supervised and administered by expert therapists. More than just a means to assuage the five senses, Sukko is a spa that gives guidance for a healthier lifestyle combined with a unique Thai cultural experience. To enter Sukko is like stepping into the past and in particular to the era of the Kingdom of Sukhothai. (Established in 1238 AD and considered the start of Thai history). A gong is beaten to sound your arrival; you are welcomed with the traditional ‘wai’, and the pleasant aroma of flowers and incense floating in the air starts the process of rejuvenation from the moment you set foot on this hallowed ground. The villas of the spa are spread around a tropical garden and take the form of traditional Thai architecture. The paintings depict episodes from Thai ancient literature or therapeutic positions to relax all of the muscles of the body. Brush strokes and patterns show the Thai characteristics of tenderness, kindness and attention to detail.

The members of staff all wear the traditional Thai loincloth called a ‘Chongkrabane’. They speak warmly and politely in Thai and English using suffixes that were used in the ancient Thai language such as ‘Chaokha’ and ‘Khorub’ as a mark of respect to the person being addressed. As you would expect from an establishment such as this, the cuisine, which is exclusively Thai, is top notch in taste, healthiness and nutrition. The vegetables and spices are all organically grown in the gardens meaning that their freshness is unrivalled. Give yourself a taste of what life was like in ancient Thailand. Health & Beauty Mind Power

Emotional freedom at your fingertips

L

ife is challenging and can often be stressful. Although practices such as meditation, yoga and exercise benefit us immensely, we sometimes need a more immediate relief from the issues that we are dealing with. So this begs the question: “Is there something out there that can swiftly release persistent stress from my thoughts and feelings?” Thanks to EFT the answer is now a resounding “YES!”….

What is EFT? EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and it can be thought of as an emotional version of acupuncture, only no needles are involved. Instead, you stimulate the body’s energy system, the meridians, by using your fingertips. While tuning into any unwanted thoughts, feelings or physical pains you simply tap on specific meridian points around your face and body. This instantly starts to release the underlying energetic blockages which give rise to negative emotions and contribute to physical dis-eases.

Why use EFT? Quite simply, EFT can achieve in minutes what conventional therapy might take longer to achieve. Conventional therapy has its rightful place and can be very useful in gaining intellectual understanding of ones psychological issues. However, EFT addresses such problems instead by focusing on releasing the emotional intensity which underlies our

48

www.phuketindex.com

psychological and physical issues. This is why EFT produces swift results with such a wide range of issues, especially with emotional and physical issues which have not responded well to conventional methods.

What can EFT be used to treat? There is a common phrase within the EFT community of ‘try it on everything!’ It is excellent at reducing anger, frustration, phobias, sadness, insomnia, cravings, physical pain, allergies, and etc.

How many sessions does it take to feel a difference? We are complex individuals, so it is unrealistic to expect a life changing results in just a single session, however, EFT does deliver measurable results with minimal effort in a short space of time. EFT is also one of the very few techniques that you can easily learn to do on yourself and then use

whenever you like. I see EFT is an essential tool for life, something we can use, share and benefit from whenever we want to feel relief from life’s stresses and strains. Feng Shui

Feng Awaken The Inner

Chi Energy of Your Home

8 Ways to Resonate with the Rhythms of Nature

One of the most powerful ways to engage the cosmic spirit of the environment is to tune into its rhythm, its natural ebb and flow of invisible vitality. This daily chi grows in yang intensity from sunrise in the mornings, through the brightness of afternoon time before dissolving into the yin darkness of night. The practice of Inner Feng Shui is what enables us to resonate with this daily waxing of yang and yin energy. Here are 8 ways to tune into this energy flow.

1. EARLY MORNING AWARENESS When you consciously develop an awareness of each day’s energy flows, you will eventually recognize the ebb and flow of nature’s natural rhythms. This will help you become familiar with the inner symphonic energy of your living space. Start by rising early to see how night gives way to day with the rise of the sun.

50

www.phuketindex.com

Mornings are moments when pure young yang energy bathes your home. There is a special glow around your home as night gives way to day; your space awakens as fresh new energy permeates the environment. Simply perceiving the powerful purity of this energy is sufficient to add great strength to your inner essence making you better equipped to face the day. Natural cosmic forces are there by your side without you even being aware of its presence! So each morning, breathe in this powerful air and feel your spirit amplifying.

if only for a few moments each day. Doing so helps you engage directly with the powerful intensity of the sun. It is sturdy yang chi and invaluable indeed! If you are at home, bring in this energy by opening a door or a window. If you are in the office, try visualizing doing this for your home. The mind’s energy is all powerful, and simply picturing your home getting energized by sunshine makes it happen. But you must give it mental power.

2. THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE MIDDAY SUN As the day progresses, the vitality of your home further mirrors the cycles of nature. The prime time between sunrise and sunset is when our inner chi gets distracted with work and other concerns. That is when we forget to tune into the powerful bright energy of the sun’s glow. Devote a few moments each day to giving your attention to the sunshine. Midday energy is when the house gets powerfully revitalized. It is a good time to tune into this awareness

3. ENGAGING THE LIVING EARTH ENERGY It is important to mentally capture the mother spirit of the earth. You must perceive the earth on which your home stands to be a living organism. Respect this fact and you can reap the bounty of the Earth.

Home & Décor Feng Shui

Shui Your home is a small part of this greater whole and when you think of your home in this context, you will cause the nurturing energy of the earth to envelop your home with good fortune vibrations. Remember that it is belief that gives your thoughts reality!

4. FLOW WITH THE YIN & YANG OF YOUR HOME When you become aware of the onset of night time energies, you will realize that the home reflects the yin and yang of the cosmic Tai Chi. This dual aspect of the home gives rise to the natural balance of its spirit. Night time hours are a time of rest and rejuvenation and it is during these yin hours that you and everyone else in the home slow down the rhythm of living. It is a time when the mind and body rests and the spirit takes over. And when you go to sleep each night, make sure you get into a deep restful sleep. Do this by taking a very deep, deep breath. Breathe in deep and breathe out very slow. This is the way to go to sleep. Usually by the third breath you would have sunk into a deep sleep. This is what nurtures your spirit – and by extension it also nurtures your home.

5. ENGAGING THE INNER SPIRIT It is during the yin hours, when you sleep that your inner spirit engages with that of your home. As you gradually develop this subconscious awareness, you will

slowly but successfully sense the inner core essence of your home rise to your conscious awareness. This cannot happen immediately but it is sure to come, this growing consciousness that your home has a soul and that this soul of the home is inseparable from you. And as your spirit increasingly engages with that of your home, it will bring you a fabulous sense of well being.

knowledge and good relationships. Mountains in a Chinese feng shui savvy home are always present as paintings, pictures, miniature landscapes and even in a single beautiful stone. When you focus on finding just such a stone that can symbolize this for you, bring in flowers and plants for good measure to add to the spirit of living nature.

6. NURTURING THE SPIRIT OF THE HOME

It is by paying attention to the home’s inner needs and being responsive to it that good fortune comes. This means ensuring that chi can flow smoothly and unimpeded through the home, that the home is not lacking in the smells and sounds of nature, that there is good flow, good air and enough brightness to nurture its spirit. When you are sensitive to your home’s inner needs, it will reward you with an abundance that is quite beyond your dreams. In fact, that is when your home will begin to grow and help you expand your own dreams and ambitions. This and more will unfold for you. When you are in sync with the soul of your home and begin to communicate with its essence, your home will protect you, watch over you, and bring you excellent feng shui!

8. THE WORLD’S SEAS & RIVERS IN A SINGLE DROP OF WATER

7. CAPTURE MOUNTAIN ENERGY IN A SINGLE STONE

If you are looking for prosperity (which of us is not?) then simulate the rivers and the seas of the world inside your home with water, even if it is only a single drop; the presence of this element is what brings life and sustenance to the home. Better yet is to build some kind of natural water feature and then focus your mental energies on it. Give it life by adding fish and plants. Create a small corner of the natural outdoors indoors. This facilitates the flow of inner forces into your home, helping it resonate with the external environment, keeping its soul well nourished and ultimately benefiting you and your family. In the process, your natural intuitive process also develops.

Mountain energy encapsulates the health of the living world and you can invite in the forces of the world’s mountains into your home with a single beautiful stone! The Chinese have long looked to their mountains to bring them strength and forbearance, good health and longevity,

Kamala Regent A Development with a Difference

I

n recent years there have been many housing developments growing up in Phuket and this has had a dramatic impact on our social environment, creating employment, an improvement in living standards for many people, and, regrettably, traffic congestion, but, happily, it, in turn, has led to improving the roads. Each visitor has to be accommodated and many want to have their own place in the sun, some to visit every year and some with a view to retirement. That is one reason the Phuket Property market is always fairly buoyant and right now there are numerous choices. Most popular perhaps are beachfront homes, or at least abodes close to the beach, and one such development is Kamala Regent. Beginning in Eastern Thailand and then Bangkok, the original brand name of the company concerned was ‘Ban Meak Mai’, but that did not gel well with the cosmopolitan image of Phuket, so it was changed to ‘Regent’ with a prefix indicating the location, hence ‘Kamala Regent’. Situated a mere 350 metre stroll from Kamala beach, the backdrop to this condominium is lush jungle covered hills and the scent of the sea in never far away. But, at the same time it is surrounded by shops, restaurants and the ubiquitous bar scene. In other words, everything associated with a Phuket holiday, from beach to bar, is right there. Nevertheless, if the brighter lights of Patong beckon, it is only 10 – 20 minutes away, depending on the mode of transport. Altogether the complex consists of 97 condominium units, 6 villas and 10 guest houses available for daily rental. Facilities include a

fitness centre, sauna, swimming pool, on-site gourmet restaurant and bar, high speed internet, cable TV, key-card access, 24hour security and a professional management team. Kamala Regent is a good investment for short or long term living. The building standards are high using some of the best materials available. Parking is very much more than adequate and we believe that this is a secure, high value investment in today’s uncertain world.

L and & Property Pro j e c t Overview

Satien Yeuk-ngoen Phuketindex.com interviewed Khun Satien Yeuk-ngoen, the owner/developer of this, one of the most fabulous resorts in Kamala.

Please tell us about your beginning in this field? We began as a contractor in the construction business and stayed that way for 20 years. Then we decided to upgrade to doing the actual developing ourselves, first with 6 projects in Eastern Thailand then 2 in Bangkok. We started in Phuket in early 2007.

What are the strengths of the company? Actually, we originally wanted to build something in Patong but realized that Patong is a place for night life and not so suitable for residential units such as the ones we specialize in. Kamala is midway between Patong and Surin and so supplied the answer, quiet enough, but not far from the action if and when desired.

What is your main target market? Our customers are a diverse group, but mainly from Scandinavia and Russia, with a few from the rest of Europe.

What about after-sales services and management? We try to make our customers feel as though they are part of a community and to this end we have a party 2 or 3 times a year, usually in the green season. This engenders a unified spirit but also gives the residents a chance to air any grievances (if there are any) and we listen. Lastly, they create and cement friendships.

Feedback from the parties? Everyone has been very impressed by the party concept, particularly as they have not seen it elsewhere.

W

hat are the differences between Kamala Regent and other resorts?

Kamala Regent is totally different from any of our past projects in other provinces. Whereas 95% of our clients before were Thai, this development is aimed more at foreigners. When we decided to branch out into Phuket, we researched the market thoroughly to find out what kind of units appeal to our new customers and what innovations might give us the edge. We think we made the right decision by selecting Kamala instead of Patong, and in concentrating on a ‘community’.

Do you have anything to say to our readers? I do not want to talk about marketing. I just want to say we are here to help whenever they need us.

Any final words? It concerns me that many people come from so far away to live in Phuket and that is why I want to do everything I can to make them feel comfortable in a strange environment. It is my sincere desire that we become friends and live happily together.

Well, that’s the party line from Kamala Regent, but what about the residents? Simona Bazzoni has been since 1st March and here is what she has to say: “In the 3 months that I have lived here I have found that the services of Kamala Regent have been very good indeed. We are treated like royalty and nothing, it seems, is too much trouble for the staff. Kamala seems a bit out of the way, but really, it is easy to get to any part of Phuket.”

espite the undeniable fact that there are many, many housing developments in Thailand, Loft style houses are not often seen, and those that are, are generally jealously retained by the architect or builder. Perhaps it is because no developer wants to take the risk of building what is, after all, a kind of ‘niche’ home, and then not being able to sell it. A pity really, as such houses definitely have their appeal, particularly to those that dare to be different. Notwithstanding this fact, Phuketindex.com has found one for sale just 30 minutes from Phuket airport in Phang-Nga Province.

This unusually shaped 5-story building certainly caches the eye, if only for its striking appearance. The bold developer is almost as unconventional as the house: “I’ve been in this business for a while now and have experience in devloping many projects in the area. The Loft Natai however, is a total break from the usual thing I get involved with. I personally like the loft style so worked closely with the architect to help with the design and concept. For months, hardly a day passed when I was not in consultation with them, until now I am almost as expert at the home design software as an architect is.” It’s not just the house that demands a second look; the setting also is eye-catching with a small lagoon in the foreground and the beach just beyond. The landscaped garden features a 3 by 8 metre swimming pool.

Land & Property Project Overview The total usable area is 478 square metres. The ground floor has the living area with a lounge, dining area, kitchen and outdoor living space; the high ceiling gives a very spacious and airly atmosphere throughout. The next three floors

are occupied by one large bedroom per floor but the jewel in this crown is the fifth floor with its panoramic view, bar and jacuzzi. (The latter conjures up naughty little thoughts of sitting with your lover, bottle of champagne on ice, watching the sun kiss the horizon on an azure sea. Ahhh…..) “It was designed to give a different feeling depending on where you stand.” Said the owner with a knowing grin. As we sat on the rooftop by the Jacuzzi, with the wind gently blowing away our fatigue, the creator of this utopia expounded upon his views: “Loft design depends very much on the mood and perspective of the individual imagination. For example, this column: when we took it out of its mold we found it had a natural beauty as it was, so no finishing touches were added. We installed it and found an interesting juxtaposition between its rough appearance and the smooth surroundings. “This style of house is not just about architectural aesthetics but is also about decoration. Things that at first may seem inharmonious can go together surprisingly well. I had to think hard and long about this place to get it just right. It was time consuming but also satisfying. As with painting, each brush stroke takes the canvas a little closer to a masterpiece.” It is true that this house is not everyone’s cup of tea. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but if you belong to that discerning niche, it could be right up your ally.”

GM Talk

Mr Peter D. Gibbons

General Manager of Millennium Resort Patong, Phuket “Not wanting to go to work.” Said Mr Gibbons about his greatest worry in life.

A

week ago, Phuketindex.com had an enlightening chat with Peter Gibbons, General Manger of the Millennium Resort in Patong. Peter graduated from Dorset University in the UK and became the recipient of The Grand Metropolitan Hotels scholarship programme. Between 1980 and 1982 he trained at many famous establishments including The Grande Hotel in Paris, The Carlton in Cannes, and the Hotel de la Ville in Rome. Most recently he was the Managing Director at Loong Palace Hotel, Beijing, China, before joining The Millennium.

What do you think is the most distinguishing feature of this hotel? “Location and flexibility of choice. We have two very distinctive wings here; one is right alongside the largest shopping mall in Phuket which is quite unique and stylish in itself. The other wing is more of a retreat with of Cabana style rooms, each with its own Jacuzzi. Whatever your fancy we can cater for it, and don’t forget, as regards location, we are right in the heart of Patong with its vibrant 24 hour lifestyle.”

What is the guests’ trend nowadays? What would they like? “The trend right now is more value for money plus a bit more on top of that. Guests always shop around for the best deal, particularly on the internet. It’s a buyers’ market and we need to ensure that we do not compromise in service, facilities, amenities and all-round quality. Going that extra yard – meeting the customer’s expectations, then a bit more, is what makes the difference. You have to listen to what they are telling you, and what they are telling your staff who are in closer contact than I.”

As a GM of the hotel, what worries you most? “Not wanting to come to work. I really enjoy and love my job and I wake up every day keen to get started. My wife says I am married to the hotel. I am not a workaholic but I have a passion for what I do and that’s different.”

Has the world’s unstable economic crisis affected the hotel? How do you handle it? “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. We are focusing on markets which are remaining solvent and are more insulated and less vulnerable to the present situation. Co-operation with partners helps, sales and marketing ploys plus, of course, keeping our high standards and a good relationship with the customers.”

a Flora Resort and Spa could not be closer to where the action is either by day, for shopping in Jungceylon (5 minutes walk), or after the sun sets. Less than 200 metres from Soi Bangla, the heart of the ‘Party Town’ known as Patong, this hotel is most certainly one of the classiest in Phuket. Set right on the beach it is a great place to people watch, Andaman Sea gaze at, or to simply chill out. The total of 67 rooms consists of 30 Deluxe Pool View and 24 Deluxe Pool Access rooms. There are also 6 Pool Villas, 2 Beach Pool Villas, 2 Beach Grand Pool Villas, and finally 3 Sea View Suites. Naturally, there are price variations but every room is designed and fitted out for the ultimate in magnificent décor and luxury. Each room for example has a fully stocked mini-bar and TV and wide balconies have wonderful views over sea and sand. There are 2 large swimming pools for exercise or, if you prefer, simple relaxation. Both have panoramic views over Patong beach (hence the claim that it is a great place for people to watch). If swimming exercise is not enough, try the well equipped fitness centre, conveniently located

Now you are physically fit and relaxed, time for a bit of cerebral stimulation in the reading corner just at the side of the lobby. Books and newspapers (just to remind yourself as to how the poor people live) are available from the lobby outlet. No hotel is complete without a restaurant and ‘The Current of The Sea’ fulfils that requirement with all day dining. sea food, international and, of course, Thai cuisine are all available. An American buffet breakfast gets you going while a la carte predominates for lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is family relaxed with, more often than not, live music. The Surface Bar is tucked away on a balcony enclosed roof deck where the view, particularly of the sunsets, inspires the soul. My journey, my escape, my Racha experience

It

’s hard to believe that just 12 miles south of Phuket and 30 minutes away by speed boat from Chalong pier there is a place where exhaustion and worry cannot follow you. The Racha, or the Raya in Malay language, hosted five of us for two days and a night. This is our story. The first stage of the tale begins as soon as we stepped into The Racha ‘on-shore’ office just a short distance from Chalong pier. A warm smile, impeccable manners, and the friendly greetings of the guest relations officer gave a good first impression. Aromatic cold towels and a fruit punch was given to each of us then the group was left to start the process of relaxing. Here I should mention that ‘the group’ consisted of three younger persons and two slightly more mature and better behaved adults. Our preliminary unwinding process was interrupted three times: firstly, to select the scent we would like in our rooms and bathrooms, Lemongrass, Lavender or Jasmine (I chose Lemongrass). Secondly, to register at the hotel, even though we were not there yet, and thirdly, to be ushered towards the boat for the sea trip to Racha Island. A bus took us out to the end of the pier where the resort’s speedboat was waiting for our arrival. Altogether about a dozen people were on this trip and once everyone was safely aboard with lifejackets donned, we set off on our mid-week adventure. The skies were overcast (it was raining in most of Phuket) so it was not too hot and the cool wind in our hair was very refreshing. Fortunately, despite the rain ashore, the sea was not rough and the trip passed easily and comfortably. As the shores and beaches of Phuket receded, so the Island of Racha grew until only 30 minutes later, we were stepping onto the pontoon at the resort’s beach. A precarious moment for a landlubber like me but soon over with, despite my infantile melodramatics. We boarded the resort bus to take us to the hotel and already I was beginning to realize that my time here would be just splendiferous. We passed through coconut groves where buffalos and all kinds of birds abound. On to the hotel where once again we each received a cold towel and a fruit punch. Key cards were issued together with iPods. (Yes, iPods – just to ensure you have something

to listen to) then our host led us to our rooms. We were allocated a deluxe connecting villa that was already air-conditioned and scented with – you guessed it, Lemongrass. Time to sit and think for while – then off for a bit of exploring. Koh Racha Yai has five beautiful bays, Patok, Siam, Thur, Khonkae and Lah, all of which can be reached in minutes by walking. The Racha Resort, the only hotel on the island, is set on Patok Beach at the head of a beautiful bay on the western side. It has 70 villas categorized into six different types: Deluxe, Grand Deluxe, Grand Deluxe Pool, Grand Pool Suites and the Lighthouse – a five story villa with 360 degree views from Phang Nga Bay to Phuket to Koh Rok Nok all the way round to Koh Phi Phi. Outstanding! Our tour began at the Anumba Spa which offers a wide range of treatments and activities such as yoga and meditation. Their signature Marine Gateway Deluxe package was very tempting but there were lots more to see so it would have to wait until next time. Walking, unwillingly, away from the spa we came across a white building which houses the Earth Café on the ground floor and a very comprehensive library upstairs (just in

78

www.phuketindex.com

case you don’t like iPods). The Earth Café is the venue for the international breakfast and at the other end of the day, one of three locations to enjoy western and Thai cuisine for diner, the other two being the Fire Grill and Sunset Beach. Close by the former is the Ice Bar for cocktails and karaoke after the sun goes down. Lingering by the poolside made me realize that I was indeed lucky to be in such a place as this but, moving on past Sunset Beach restaurant and the diving school led us to Gerardo’s Gelato. To hell with the diet! Sitting on the silky soft sand of the beach, licking our home made ice cream, we were not privy to a glorious sunset but we were able to savour a few rays breaking through the overcast; enough to make us realize that a clear sky would give the beholder a truly exceptional sun and seascape set in such a beautiful west facing bay. In the evening we were privileged to have dinner with the General Manager, Mr Gerard Tan, in the Sunset Restaurant. The superb Thai fare was helped along by some songs from a band from the Philippines, the members of which joined us in the Ice Bar later. Their talents contrasted despairingly (for me) with my attempts at Karaoke. Even Gerard Tan could sing better.

In fact, the two songs he rendered late on were very good indeed. We had a wonderful night but our cozy beds were waiting and I was asleep within seconds of my head hitting the pillow. Beep beep blooming beep, 05:30 already! Certainly did not want to get up but I said I would so – no choice. Time to watch the sunrise at Ao Thur beach, about 10 minutes mountain bike ride from the hotel. Arriving at first light, my senses were as sharp as I have ever known them. It was a very peaceful morning and the sound of the waves lapping on the beach blended with the wind sighing through the trees. As the sky lightened and the shimmering sun rose over the sea it felt glorious to be alive. Our spirits uplifted, we eventually turned our backs on the rising sun and headed off for breakfast, and what a breakfast it was. The Canadian chef, recognizing we had just come back from somewhere, and he himself having just finished a game of tennis, made sure our fuel tanks were well replenished.

All too soon the scheduled departure time was approaching but there was time for one last walk around so up to the viewpoint then down to some of the beaches for a few more photographs. On the way we saw two Sea Hawks perched almost within touching distance; amazing proximity for such wild birds and I realized Racha is a natural paradise for anyone with an interest in nature with plenty. It was with a sad heart that we embarked on our speedboat for the trip back to Chalong. Although we had only photographs to remind us of our time there, the greatest memory will forever be in our hearts.

Phunaka Golf Academy T

he Phunaka Golf Academy is a 9-hole golf course and driving range on almost 100 rai of beautiful land in the Chalong area of Phuket designed to be a learning centre for the great game of golf.

Recreation & Rooms Fun ‘N’ Frolic

The Academy covers all aspects of the game, including knowledge, etiquette, rules, etc., and those are gently fed in as the student walks the course. “This place is for everyone; young, old, male, female, beginner or professional,” continues Oliver, “You do not need to bring your own equipment, we can supply it on a rental basis for you. And if you do decide to buy or upgrade, we can also give you advice on the best choice for you as an individual.” When it opens in June, the Phunaka will provide a unique learning and improving facility in a setting as close to a full scale course as a golf school can possibly get. The aim is to make it the foremost golf academy in the region, but only time will tell if it will achieve that goal. In the meanwhile, if you are interested in the game, at any level of play, Phunaka is a very affordable option in Phuket.

D

ue to open in June this year, the centre will have 3 professional golfers on the teaching staff, including Oliver Bates, an Englishman with 15 years experience who moved to Phuket in 2001, and who will be in overall control as director of the Golf Academy. Oliver will be joined by a two Thai professionals who will primarily, but not exclusively, help out on the range. The aim is to attract juniors and seniors, experienced and inexperienced alike, to introduce or improve the game by focusing on producing a consistent and reliable swing. “I have taught and will teach individually and in group sessions. Obviously individual instruction is best, but if a group session is desired we will usually restrict it to four persons, with a maximum of six.” says Oliver. “We like to work on individuals whenever possible since we

try not to teach all students the same way. We prefer to talk to them first so that we can design a course of instruction which suits their requirements. It depends a lot on their experience, standard, goals, availability, age etc. Some can come regularly, others maybe only once a week. We will tailor the lessons to the individual’s ability and circumstances.”

To facilitate these aims, the Academy has a driving range with 56 bays which is 170 yards wide by 330 yards long with realistic targets to aim at covering everything from the short chip to the full drive. In addition, the 9–hole course provides the golfer with a chance to practice in an even more realistic situation, with instruction if desired, before venturing out onto a full size golf course. Both the range and course are floodlit, allowing after office or after beach relaxation and practice. www.phuketindex.com

Entrepreneur in his blood

A

“My goal is to be happy and share my happiness with my customers.”

ccording to wikipedia, “An urban planner is a professional who works in the field of urban planning for the purpose of maximizing the effectiveness of a community’s land use and infrastructure. They formulate plans for the development and management of urban and suburban areas, typically analyzing land use compatibility as well as economic, environmental and social trends. In developing their plan for a community (whether commercial, residential, agricultural, natural or recreational), urban planners must also consider a wide array of issues such as sustainability, air pollution, traffic congestion, crime, land values, legislation and zoning codes.” So what will happen when these kinds of people happen to be interested in home development? Matthew D. Rayner, the planner of The Estate Group is with us this issue.

His background “Concisely, an urban planner is a person who has skill in planning the infrastructure of a city and the development of a sustainable environment. It’s not just the architecture or design. That’s what I got for my first degree before I continued on with the master degree in real estate and investment.” However, what seems to have influenced this change is his family who are involved in real estate. “It’s also in my blood”, he added.

www.phuketindex.com

Career path Matthew is experienced working in many parts of the world on a variety of real estate deals. “Before I started my own business, I ran a fund for investment in global property all over this region. Mostly in Thailand but also in Taiwan, Korea and Japan.” No one would guess that the reason why he quit his last job and started his own business here was because he couldn’t get funds to invest in Phuket which he had fallen in love with. “I only began with a small piece of land next to Ao Por Grand Marina.”

On his working principle ‘Quality of life’ is the focus of his work. He says, “I just want people’s experience to be like staying in a hotel room, living a city life, and never leaving behind the thing they would like to do, their family, their hobbies, whatever.” He continues, “I want to cheer up people and I think Phuket is the best place to do that.” Not only does he reflect that inspiration with clients but with his staff as well. “Everybody works smart but they don’t have to work long. I don’t believe in that. They won’t have me over them. They will have me support them,” says Khun Matthew with a serious look.

His motto and way of thinking “My motto has changed from what I’ve learned. Actually, you need to be flexible. You need to never give up. Only understand that the way to get from here to there is not the way you think it is going to be. It’s always going to change.”

Goal of his life “My goal is to be happy and share my happiness with my customers.” If GDP is a basic measure of an economy’s economic performance, a measure for ones satisfaction in life should be called ‘Growth Domestic Happiness’ which he strives to achieve.

Phuket property situation

“I play squash and play with my dog [he laughed]. I have learned Thai boxing and train everyday. I think I’m a pretty healthy person.”

Although Phuket property is in a downturn due to the global economic conditions, he believes it still a very good investment. “What you are going to see now is people are looking for something to invests in. They are looking for a new venture so they can flip it and make money from it. I think people are going to concentrate more on what is important and what is important is good food, good weather and easy lifestyle. I think more people start to realize that the market is a sustainable way to learn. So it’s now slowed down but I think it will just take time.”

Handling a problem “My customers are actually those people who know what they like. They make a decision. They want something more than just a real estate investment. They want to live and invest. Most of people we sell houses to are those who believe in the long term growth of this market but also want to live here. So it is both investment and lifestyle put together. If they understand this well, we don’t really have a problem. Perhaps the only problem is they don’t understand how difficult it is to invest in Thailand,” Matthew explains openly. He is a permanent resident who will become a Thai citizen soon.

A Message to those whom are thinking on running their own business “To me, we may do retail, we may do hotels, we may do resorts. So I don’t know but I want to start with housing first and then we perhaps move to other things. For you, to run your own business, being very careful is a major step. It’s always changing. A lot of people that run their own business in a particular place like a holiday vacation spot don’t realize that it is never too late to make money. But you have to be an expert in the place and in what you do.”

Need to know about his Estate The Estate is the upscale development from an Asian-based real estate developer, the Estate Group. Situated on a prime area of 25 rai (45,000 square meters approximately) on Phuket’s East Coast next to the headland of Laem Yang.

organization. In building the Buddha we hope that we are improving the spiritual wellbeing of all mankind, not just Buddhists. With the charity, it is our intention to use the funds to propagate the teachings of Buddha so that more people will understand and appreciate the wisdom of it.”

The Big Buddha of Phuket

A Miracle of Faith

T

ime and again we have seen that faith can overcome apparently impossible hardships and that the power of the human spirit can triumph against seemingly insurmountable odds. Often, this manifestation of fortitude is interpreted as a miracle; something that seemed impossible only a short time ago but that has now come to pass. Such is the case now in Phuket with the arrival of the Big Buddha, or to give it its proper name, “Prahputtamingmongkol Eaknakakeeree” – “The Supremely Auspicious Buddha of Nakkerd Hill” The venture was originally conceived by a group ordinary local people named “Prahputtamingmongkol Sadtah 45” – “The Supremely Auspicious Faith of 2545 (2002AD)” in 2002. The Big Buddha was given its present name by the supreme patriarch of the Buddhist Church, but it is coming into existence as the palladium of Phuket is largely

due to a Royal Mandate issued on August 19, 2008. (A Palladium {not this transliterator’s word} is a statue of Pallas Athena, especially the one upon which the safety of Troy depended {should we be worried?}) Standing 45M high, the statue is in the “Mara Vichaya” posture (Buddha conquering the demon) and sits on the top of Nakkerd Hill in the Karon sub-district of the Island. To reach it however, you should enter the access road, Soi Mahasanay, from Chao Fa Road West (the by-pass road) about 1.5 km north of Chalong circle. Then drive up Mutita Road, the road of sympathetic joy, for about 6 km. We interviewed Khun Suporn Vanichkul, the president of the construction foundation, to get his views on the project: “The first priority was to build the image of Buddha and the second was the establishment of a charitable

“The Big Buddha is also a tribute to the King; although we are Buddhists, the King is still at the centre of our hearts and this is another way to express our love and respect. We have also built a brass Buddha and dedicated it to the Queen. It is 12M high and sits alongside the big white marble one.” continued Khun Suporn, “Visitors to the venture have come from all over Thailand and the world. Donations too come from every conceivable corner of the earth and we have to thank them all for their kindness and support which has made this truly international project possible.” “The whole development is nearly complete but there is still work to be done in improving the road, landscaping the gardens and completing the exhibition centre that will go inside the structure itself. The final cost is likely to be about THB 150 million and it should be complete by 2010.” Although the images of Buddha have changed over the years as art and construction methods have evolved, still the veneration and principles of the beliefs have remained constant. The teaching of wisdom, purity, tolerance and piety remain as they have always been, even though the outward image has altered with time. The Big Buddha is fast becoming one of the great man made tourist attractions of Phuket, partly for the magnificent view from the top of the hill, but also because of its spiritual attributes. If you would like to be part of the adventure, you can make a donation at the hilltop or at one of the many charity boxes around the island.
