Scholarships

"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you're not"

Scholarships are free financial aid that you don't have to pay back. Generally they require an essay, a series of questions, or maybe just some basic information about yourself. Some can be pretty stressful and complicated so make sure to ask a trusted friend or adult (like the counselor or your ELA teacher) to look it over and give you pointers and maybe some helpful advice.

Some scholarship websites to look into: Remember not to procrastinate! Take this year at a pace that works for you! And remember not to make excuses, take responsibility!

Kids Feeding kids and combating hunger

On November 11th, Plattsburg High School students distributed food made during Mrs Karen Thompson's Foods class to families in need Thompson's class partnered with Kids Feeding Kids in an effort to combat food insecurity this holiday season

On Friday, November 4th, Diane Mora, Education Support Specialist for Kids Feeding Kids, delivered ingredients for Chili Verde Casserole, which was funded by the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation In addition, Mora explained to Thompson's students what food insecurity is and the reasons behind it. During the course of the following week, Thompson’s students prepared and packaged the casseroles and beans and rice The hope is that students who participate in making and distributing meals to those in need create awareness of what families face in our communities

Brandon Burns, Plattsburg High School principal said, “It's a blessing to have a healthy prepared meal available at the end of the day It really reduces the stress and expense of having to prepare and serve a meal after a day of work and then childcare in the evening This makes the family time at the end of the day much more enjoyable. It's not only rewarding to those that are able to receive the meals but also to those students that are able to prepare the meals It really is a win win situation for everyone invol d ”

In an attempt to combat hunger throughout the school year, CCR3 encourages families to sign up for free or reduced lunches, and they are planning to partner with Kids Feeding Kids in the spring

“Educating classrooms on livable wages and how to advocate at a systemic level for those wages would help bring more awareness for the 809,680 Missourians that struggle with food insecurity every day If more people understood the math behind that it would circulate more empathy, education, and awareness around how potentially wasted food can be redirected to support persons below the poverty level in trying to feed their families,” said Mora

Thirty eight Plattsburg families benefited from the food PHS students made

PHS freshman Charleigh Mooney felt this was a good learning experience “It was really good that we had part of the organization come and explain the story behind it and it was overall fun to bond with my class as well and have that experience with them,” Mooney added.

YES No

VS

Consent is defined as the permission for something to happen or agreement to do something

The difference between yes and no should be clear cut but too many people move their boundaries to accomodate for others "needs" There a two main reasons. The biggest reason we do this is out of fear. We are afraid our friend or significant other will leave us, and we will find ourselves alone. We don't realize, though, that we need healthy boundaries to have healthy relationships.

It is important to understand what you want, what you need and then work on creating the boundaries necessary for others to understand that. An important thing to remember: you can only control your actions and reactions With that in mind, try your hardest to do your part in enforcing your limits, so that mistakes you didn't want to happen, happen

Imagine you're close to this one friend and you have some really great moments with them, but they're inconsistent and unreliable Most of the time they come to you to complain, vent or to use something, but thank you for being such a good friend and they never want to lose you. You feel wanted and desired, but you still have an achy feeling that you're alone. It's easy to be convinced that you won't find anyone better so you ignore the red flags and tell yourself everything is fine. Allow yourself to make scary steps, like creating boundaries or walking away from a relationship, in order to gain a healthier you and healthier relationships. You have responsibility over yourself, no one can control you, nobody can convince you; you have power and influence over your own choices and

actions, don't let others convince you otherwise "You teach others how to treat you," says Kelly Lock McMillen

Secondly, in order for the first point to go well, the receiver needs to be respectful of the boundaries the other is putting in place In order for relationships to grow and be healthy, there needs to be a mutuality between listening and being heard by both parties

In healthy relationships, romantic or not, sometimes you will have to put the others needs before your own. So when someone says "maybe later", "not right now", "I don't know" or they don't say anything, then that means no. Yes can also mean something like "sure", "okay" or anything else that verbally gives permission with no confusion or doubt.

We are responsible for ourselves, how we handle things and how we treat others. Be intentional and mindful about your relationships with others and learn how to work together instead of against each other

always be sustainable is thrifting, it's much cheaper and better for the environment.
Both are Eddie Bauer pullovers..The one on the right is off their website and the one on the left is from Good Will. When thrifting you are not contributing to big companies who only care about production and not the earth's health. An example of a big company that is sustainable is Patagonia. They have removed more than 20,000 ton of CO2 emissions in one year. They make clothing out of recyclable materials that last a very long time to encourage people to buy less and and buy well. yTobesustainableall oouhavetodoisabit fresearch. Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is an activity where students can work on projects in different branches of science that interest them. They can study many different things or build projects. Then we go and compete against different schools to show how well we understand each topic we worked on during the school year. Students should join in order to explore some things in science that we do not cover in an average science class, or to broaden their understanding on subjects they already enjoy. Practices are decided on an event basis. They fluctuate between Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have regionals in February, and State is in April. Last year we made it to state, as an entire team, and had one group placed.

Sports Highlights

"The thing I like the most about basketball is the fun in it. I enjoy basketball more than any other sport. I have made more friends in basketball than any other sport. I made more friends on the court than in the classroom. While I enjoy the sport, I also enjoy the team chemistry."

River Jones

"I like basketball because it’s a fun sport to play, very active and I've loved playing it since I was little. It’s always been something that I've enjoyed playing and loved to watch."

"I honestly am not too sure why I love [wrestling] so much. But I love it because it's so mentally and physically challenging and exhausting. You really get to push yourself to be better. putting on your shoes and the feeling of getting on the mat is unexplainable it's just this little spark. I mean you get to physically and mentally dominate somebody for 6 minutes and not get in trouble. But that's why I love wrestling."

Winter Sport Kickoff

"It was good last year and it was fun. Had a good record last year but didn’t finish like we wanted. I think it will be good this year as we got some guys returning. But last year was in the past so now we gotta prove ourselves again. I guess we will see how the season will go. "

"Last year was a very fun season we had a couple girls go out that were really good athletes that were a key to our success. We made it to the district championship but we lost sadly, but It was still a lot of fun. This year is a whole new year almost all of our starters will be either incoming freshmen or past players who are stepping up. I think this year will be a lot of fun as well because of how many leaders and hard workers we have. We will definitely miss some of our old players but I’m excited to see how we grow as a team!"

"If we work hard enough some may be able to go past districts and maybe have a chance to qualify for state, but we'll see. "

"I personally think that wrestling was fun last year. I think it would've been better if I could've experienced the state tournament though. But I am ready. "

Her hobbies are playing sports such as the ones above and soccer and she enjoys to watch any sports TV as well. When she graduates she would like to attend Iowa State University and complete undergrad and go into to vet med school, and start a large animal practice in her future. Some things that she is passionate about are her horses and competing in rodeo doing barrels, pole bending, breakaway roping and goat tying. She got into riding horses when she was 4 because her parents had gotten a horse, and she started taking specific rodeo lessons when she was 9. Once she was in 7th grade she started Iowa junior high rodeo and has continued doing Iowa rodeo even when she moved here. Some family that has an impacted her is her cousin Ally Sowers, she’s one of her biggest role models and is also going into vet school, which has impacted her a lot in wanting to go into vet school.

Trez Boulware

Sophomore Trez Boulware is in high school, he's from Nebraska but has moved all over the place being in a military family but plans to be in Plattsburg until he graduates. He plays basketball, baseball, and soccer and enjoys being outdoors. Some of his favorite things to do are work on different projects he comes up with, such as redecking his trailer, putting a new muffler delete on his car, mower engine work, fixing parts on his truck etc. Other things he enjoys are hanging out with his girlfriend, Lillie Schmitten, and hanging out with friends. Since he was a kid he's been very passionate about cars or really anything with a motor and wheels. He loves his BRZ and driving around town to pass time. He plans on going to college after graduation, not sure which school yet, but he takes interest in business and engineering. He wants to give a big thanks to his parents and friends for having his back whenever he's needed it. Lastly, his favorite part about school is the staff to student ratio, especially related to sports.

Tyler Jones

Tyler, junior, likes to spend her time drawing and reading books such as Swimming Lessons by Lily Reinhart. This year she decided to take part in wrestling because Momma Fish convinced her she should try while they were on a mission trip to West Virginia over the summer Her favorite part about school is being around her friends, especially Alice Nelson, because they've been best friends since 8th grade and she has always been good at listening, helping with her struggles and giving advice Other people that are important to her is her Grandma and Aunt Terrilyn because they took her in and raised her when she moved out of her mom's house and her dad was working all the time to provide. Tyler's plans to go MCC for her GenEds and then to Northwest to study to become a veterinarian, and if that doesn't work out she would like to be a vet tech.

Debbie is a senior and likes to pass time with art, movie watching, driving around, and hanging out with her friends. She loves art and animals and strongly believes in a more real-world education. She describes school as overwhelming, interesting, as well as an experience. If she could change anything about the school it would be to include more real world and a "useful" education and to decrease the amount of "unecessary" education. She also would add more of a variety of classes to help kids be more interested in learning at school.

ADULTING WITH JENNA ADULTING WITH JENNA

This month's topic: Cars

CHECKING YOUR OIL, AND THE REASONING BEHIND OIL CHANGES

The first thing you are going to look for, is your engine oil dipstick (see right) This will tell you if your oil is low, however this will not tell you if your oil needs changed. Always refer to your car manual to know what kind of oil your car needs and how much oil your car needs. If you lost your manual or simply don't have one, most of the time a quick Google search is safe

By not checking your oil or changing your oil regularly, you risk damaging the engine or even worse, destroying it completely It is super important to change your oil regularly

Regularly may look different to different people and different cars. Newer cars need an oil change every 7,500 10,000 miles. Older cars should get an oil change every 5,000. If you do not exceed 5,000 10,000 miles (depending on your vehicle needs), you should be changing your oil every 3 or 4 months.

The reason why changing your oil is important, is because the engine gets really hot and uses the oil and burns the oil over time Your oil filter also gets used/old and is very important that you get a new filter with every oil change

CHECKING YOUR TIRES

As winter meers, it is very important to have good tires. Good tires does not mean winter specific, off roading tires. Good tires refer to having good tread and also lasting 50,000 75,000 miles or 4 5 years. Keep in mind having good tires will not stop your car from sliding on slick roads and will not stop a wreck. However, they will help you keep control of your vehicle and help you regain control of your vehicle if needed.

ALIGNMENTS

Typically, you should get an alignment on your vehicle with every oil change or every 5,000 miles. Some people say 10,000 miles or every other oil change, however at the end of the day it is simply a preference.

Alignments are needed to make sure you get the most out of your tires. Alignments are also needed when your car tends to pull to the left or right. Have you ever driven your car and gently let go of the steering wheel and noticed your car trying to steer towards the middle of the road or into the ditch? That is because of the alignment, and a bad alignment will eat up your tires

A super easy way to check your tire tread, is with a penny (see left) You place a penny in the groove in your tire with Lincoln's head down as shown If you cannot see the top of Lincoln's head, your tires are good If not, consider getting new tires soon You may test this with all of the grooves in your tires to see if you may need an alignment For example, If one side of the tire has little to no tread while the other side has good tread, you may need an alignment. for a visual see picture below.

Here we are comparing a worn tire from an alignment issue to a good tire with little to no wear.

High School Survival Guide

This month: Finals

Finals are approaching at PHS. (December 15-16th.) The part of year everyone dreads. Here are a few tips on how you can get through it. Prioritize the tests that matter to you most Make a study schedule Create your own study guide Ask your teacher plenty of questions Get plenty of rest

Start early, don't procrastinate

Good notes are important for finals. They help you process what you are learning better. Stay organized.

Fact: People who chewed gum and studied performed better on an exam given after the fact and felt much more alert and awake during the exam than the non-chewing gum group.

Good notetaking skills are important to have productive study time and be able to remember everything.

HIGHLIGHT YOUR NOTES. This will help you remember key points and if you highlight the parts you need the most, you will pay the most attention on those sections.
