The Legend of Lubenice Goat’s skull hanging on the doors of the stone house looks like a dangerous pagan symbol directing the walker like a signpost towards unknown land! What a surprise for the onlooker to find this is not a famous skull frozen on the heavens of Georgia O’Keefe - which symbolized the essence of a Mexican desert where sun and death reigned. It is neither a symbol on a Viking’s hut in a fjord, but a porch decoration of a house in Lubenice on Cres island captured by the camera of Željko Jelenski. This photographer transforms landscape trough metaphysical studies, one of the few artists who uses his camera as an instrument of learning, not merely recording nature’s breathtaking sites. Through hours of observation and study of the amazing natural phenomena, he captured the fleeting moments of light and shadow on the stony walls of Lubenice. Thus, he managed to produce a collection of photographs that describe the mystery of this town! By using his photo camera as a tool of revelation, he managed not only to capture the singularity of the place but also to make it immortal. Photographing Lubenice during wintertime, he undid the eternal vision of the Mediterranean in the summer and uncovered a deeper and more complex nature of this ancient landscape and town that is more than four thousand years old! And what a history it has. As a lonely eagle enduring the whipping bora wind, perched above the wild beauty of St. John’s cove and its pebbled beaches spared from the breaking waves of history, Lubenice stands firm on its cliff. Little has disturbed the dream-like existence of this small town with its old castle, while twice it bloomed, at the end of XVII and XIX century. Neither Roman legions situated fifty kilometers away, nor naval battles, other languages and races, nor Venice and Byzantium, shook this small town. However, the amazing chronicles of Branko Fučić reveal that during the Kadijan war between Venice and Turkey, the impoverished King Osor sold his own gentry for 300 libars. Among the pharmacists and healers, a man named Vodarić from Lubenice applied but got turned down because he farmed the land, which appalled the “old and toothless councilors”. Kingdoms collapsed, people prayed to pagan, Greek and Roman gods, then to wounded and resurrected Christ, and to St. Gaudience. In Valun they were writing in Glagolitic script, round and square (older even than the Baška table). The stone walls of Cres absorbed the engravings of history, witness to the nameless masters as they rose and fell from power, and the glory and demise of the towns they ruled. Lubenice remained in eternal sleep on the rock like a mirage in the mist. Today only fifteen people remain living in this secluded refuge. Today, as during Roman times, some good farmer, after a hard day’s work plowing his parcel outside of town, sits down in the evening to eat bread and drink scented wine. Today, in a déjà vu from the Middle Ages, an old lady quietly counts off the prayers for her deceased on the rosary. Jelenski’s camera reveals exactly that dreamy state of the town, frozen in time. A quaint church, soft contours of the houses with ancient shutters and squeaky hinges, lines curved as if modeled by rain or wind but not by human hand, on his photographs they attain this patina which gives each space in the Kvarner region such an intimate atmosphere. Man is alone in Lubenice, but intertwined with eternity and the elementals of life. One feels closer to rain, wind, eagles and grazing goats, than to other human beings. Photographs without people unearth the reign of absolute silence. The camera records atmospheric changes that are filling the ancient town structures with renewed mythical qualities. Snow-covered, the town becomes a magical place from a fairy tale. Ice-framed windows and doors emanate a surreal glow. The contours disappear in a milky mist like landscapes of Italian Vedutismo genre on the paintings of Venetian lagoons that challenged the perception of the real. Snow in particular enables these photographs to evoke a universal artistic expression. They are visual poetry of Lubenice, accenting its absolute uniqueness on the world map and, at the same time, hinting at the universality of coastal towns. The generic appearance in the photographs is expressed in the feel of the sharp pointed rocks, the same ones from which the one-legged Ahab sets off in search of the white whale, and in the wild beauty of the Irish shore washed by wild waves. Jelenski’s image of the dry stone walls, so genetically inherent to Cres, covered with ice and the images of subdued landscapes buried under snow, easily reflect Ireland. Or better more, it becomes a prototype image of a world’s generic island landscape cherishing the secrets of the beginning of time. Photographs of Lubenice completely correspond to Joyce’s description of Ireland: “It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, farther westward, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling, too, upon every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.” The photographer, like Joyce, entered the quintessential secretive atmosphere of timeless Lubenice. The inhabitants of Lubenice, resembling Michael Furey, remain stone-locked in the scented island of Cres, hopefully untroubled, eternally dreaming. The surreal drama of ominous clouds over Lubenice the photographer masterly “paints with light” surpasses the best baroque brushes. Curved staircase and tiny shutters in the side streets belong to Lubenice as much as any place on Tunisian shore or in Egypt’s Alexandria! Drops of rain add a biblical quality to the town, becoming a refuge whose wet walls protect human beings before the arrival of Noah’s Arc. Doors cracked from wind and salt belong to times much older than human memory. A full moon over the chimney is a “Stonehenge” image, while Lubenice’s church portrait, with its cross immersed in the shadows, turns into a symbol of an entire Christian civilization! Images show the town from unusual angles creating a feeling of a lizard holding a camera, or a bird, hidden in the cracks of the rock. Individual snapshots reveal all of the small things that make up a household - from colorful clothes pins on a line, to an old-fashioned hanger and plate on the wall. Those domestic objects - remind us of our home, and we may realize too late in life that they create our unique and most important refuge. Photos of the house with a cross on the wall and scented herbs conjure up the savor of figs, prosciutto and wine, that have remained unchanged over centuries. Željko Jelenski created a unique walk through Lubenice’s memory lane, creating a visual legend similar to that real one, told over generations, of the town in which a long time ago a young couple jumped off the rocks to die. The king of Osor, according to the legend, forbade his daughter from marrying her love. The king expelled her and she moved to a little town where she died tragically. The town was named after her-Ljubica/LjubeniceAttention-and then renamed during the Italian administration to Lubenice. The cycle of the ancient sad tale is now complete with the photographs that transformed this unique Cres town into a pictorial legend!

I to kakva! Ni rimske legije koje bijahu stacionirane pedesetak kilometara dalje, ni pomorske bitke, mješavine jezika i rasa, Venecija i Bizant nisu potresale mali gradić. Jelenskijeva kamera otkriva upravo to sneno i zauvijek zaustavljeno stanje grada. Fotografije bez ljudi otkrivaju carstvo apsolutne tišine. Ledom okovani prozor i vrata emaniraju nestvarni sjaj. Doista Jelenskijev creski suhozid optočen ledom i krajobraz stisnut snijegom poistovjećuje Cres i Irsku, odnosno, postaje univerzalan otočki krajolik koji skriva tajnu postanja.

The Tale of Lubenice by author

By photographing Lubenice, similar moments, frames and angles in different weather conditions and different seasons, I was depicting a mystical atmosphere. As an author I did not look for repetitions but for synthesis of exploration in sensibility and artistic expression. Furthermore, these images are experiences of the artistic and visual overcoming, a vehicle for individuals to understand the integrity of art in the digital age and amid global, often homogenizing, trends. The myth is the beginning. Ancient Greek tale of the Argonauts, Apsirt, Jason and Medeya strings the genesis of the name for the group of islands in the northern Adriatic, the islands of Apsirtids, to which belongs the island of Cres. And another myth, a tale, of the name of the small town Lubenice, on the island of Cres, which stands on the cliff whipped by the bora wind in winters and caressed by levante and mistral winds in the summers. One tale dates back to Roman times-Hibernicia, rooted in the Latin adjective hibernus-wintery. The next tale of its name, Ljubljenice, dates back to the Middle Ages: “Once upon a time lived a king in Osor and had a daughter in which a young man from the hills fell in love with and she returned his love. Disappointed with the choice of his daughter the king expelled her from the royal Osor and she moved with her lover to the hills. The princess name was Ljubica, and the town was named after her Ljubenice.” But the tale tarnishes a beautiful name with sadness as it talks of a couple’s suicide. Together they threw themselves off the cliff to rebel the forbidding of their love. The stony town has a history of four thousand years of continuous inhabitation. It will continue as long as people remain the whole year, to work, rest, sleep, simply living in their town, preserving the town’s vitality, keeping it from falling into oblivion. Today, 15 permanent residents remain in Lubenice. Electricity arrived only in 1969, and water in 2001. There are no stores, ATM machines, Internet cafes, or health clinics. A single telephone booth is the only connection to the rest of the world, as even the mobile network is weak. The food van appears twice a week while other days you can rely on kind neighbors going to Cres town to bring what you need. Sunsets in Lubenice are a unique experience for mind and body. Fogs appear as suddenly as they vanish. Every 10 to 15 years Lubenice is covered by snow, and if you perchance visit in the middle of the winter and catch that special moment, it will create a privileged bond to this stony town. From the top of Lubenice, one enjoys a gorgeous view of its beach, the sea and infinity. See it and believe it. A Middle-Aged fortress elevated on the top of the 378-meter high cliff is a jewel of Croatian rural architecture. Castle Lubenice was under Venetian rule from 1049 until 1797. The island prospered during the end of the XVII century, which enabled building sacral buildings and houses outside the fortress. In the XVIII century economic troubles led the island to stagnation, while Lubenice saw another wave of prosperity again at the end of XIX century. Throughout history, up until today, inhabitants of Lubenice led a hard existence through tilling the land. Only a few turned to the sea. During the 1930s, a group bought one large fishnet, three boats and set off to sea. They caught handsome as vast shoals of anchovies and mackerel wandered into their net. The catch swelled especially after a fisherman from Martinšćice taught a tiny group of villagers to fish at night using lanterns. Today, only the old rotting fishnet and a few spears retain the memory. Nobody needs the fishing lanterns any more, and the boats are long destroyed. The time of abundant fish, fishing and people is passed. I don’t know where you come from or how you will perceive Lubenice, but it will not leave you untouched. At the seaside you surely are used to seagulls flying over your head but here, you will have a bird’s view over the same flying seagulls. You will see them underneath you, circling over an abyss, high above the sea that lies low reaching into infinity. Man is humbled here. And in this ambient, in the atmosphere of magic summer evenings, each July, “Lubenice musical evenings” bridge and blend music of different epochs: from early renaissance and contemporary classic music of the XXth century, to folklore and klapa, the traditional a-capella singing. Under the leadership of an enthusiast and big lover of Lubenice, Mario Šlosar, a non-profit organization was created in 1999 by the name of Centre for sustainable development – Ekopark Pernat, which implements various projects and activities on the peninsula Pernat on the island of Cres. Its aim is to promote preservation of indigenous folk architecture, appreciation of natural and cultural heritage, revitalization of local economy and develop renewable sources of energy, enable protection of environment and strengthen projects of island tourism. Local folk, with their collective and historic wisdom and experience are involved in the activities to create a new holistic opportunity. Cres sports the biggest concentration of olive trees on Kvarner region, while the quality and recognition of its olive oil is on the rise. The same goes for the herbs used for medicinal purposes or condiments. Other local specialties-cheese, prosciutto and lamb-traditional foods, are still sought after and maintain a well-deserved reputation of quality. Following the mystical experiences and impressions, in konoba “Hibernicia” at the very end of the hamlet, you will find a pleasant and cheerful company among the Toić family who will serve you local specialties and take you gently back to another reality.

Prica o Lubenicama autor Fotografirajući Lubenice u raznim vremenski prilikama i godišnjim periodima kadrirao sam slične momente, kadrove, kuteve kako bih dočarao veliku mističnost i atmosferu. S vrha Lubenica imate prekrasan pogled na prekrasnu lubeničku plažu, more i beskraj.

Željko Jelenski, art photographer, was born on 23rd November 1961 in Zagreb, Croatia. The eminent Croatian photographer, active for the last twenty years, belongs to the generation of the rebellious spirit of the Zagreb’s New Wave, a music and cultural movement of the 1980s. For this generation art was not just a profession or a pretense but a way of life. He is a visual perfectionist maintaining strong integrity in style with 33 individual exhibitions to his name. He realized his first individual exhibition in Gallery Feniks in Ljubljana in 1988 under the title “Mask People”. This exhibition was a result of three years of research and artistic interpretation of Venetian Carnival masks. He also participated in 14 collective photo exhibitions, featuring works selected by the specialized juries. A ground-breaking exhibition, “Howling Horns”, was set at the Gallery Nova in Zagreb in 1993. Jelenski skillfully merged photography and graphic technique to create unique images and a new form - “photographics”. His subject was his old time love - jazz music. It was expressed through posing three musicians, men in tuxedos and bow ties, and a woman wearing a slightly erotic costume, and arming them with a saxophone, a bas-clarinet, a flute and a trumpet. This mise en scène kindled the jazz-related photography as his signature art. “Howling Horns” defined his minimalism of the composition and confirms his artistic motto - “Less is more”. In pure white space he juggles creatively only two props, the ladder and a chair, besides the live models and their music instruments. In the space unlimited in expression and, at the same time, only limited by the edge of the frame, he presses the shutter. In the lab the alchemist Jelenski reproduces positives from negatives, negatives from positives, mixes and overlaps them, and makes new enlargements. As a result of this creative process, his photo-graphics are as real as ethereal at the same time. In a simple and strong visual language, they “bebop” and jive. Since his beginnings in photography, Jelenski specialises in portrait concert photography. His portfolio features portraits of world acclaimed artists: Frank Zappa, Santana, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Keith Richards, Lou Reed, Skin (Skunk Anansie), Sky (Morcheeba), John Mayall, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Joe Cocker, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin’ Criminals), The Edge (U2), Mick Jones (The Clash), Alice Cooper, Robert Smith (The Cure), Tricky, Moby, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, B.B. King, Marcy Gray, Stacey Kent, Patricia Barber, James Carter, Sonny Rollins, Steve Vai, Henry Rollins, Bryan Ferry, Billy Idol, Peter Gabriel and many others. Those images carry the energy and power of musicians’ personal expression. He is working on a photo-monograph about world rock musicians of three hundred pages entitled Rock ‘n’ Roll On Stage by Jelenski. In 2009 he published a book of photographs “Jazz Me Up By Jelenski”, a pictorial history of jazz musicians who performed in Zagreb in the past twenty years. With this publication he received an award during “Photodays”, a festival of photography in Rovinj (Croatia), in 2010, for publishing. Ten years ago Jelenski started to get more impassioned with landscape photography and visual exploration of nature and its diverse details. These images unearth his peculiar, unique view on the beauty of Croatian nature. His camera is an instrument of learning, not merely recording nature’s breathtaking sites. He feels and transforms landscape trough metaphysical visual studies. “He is a versatile photographer who produces unique works of art, a photographer to whom nature is the most exciting challenge. Jelenski has a Japanese respect for nature and his motives are indeed the most luxurious vistas for the viewer” - (Marina Tenžera, Vjesnik daily). He participated in many art projects, demanding his expertise from the abstract to fashion photography, while continuously pursuing his projects with rock music themes. During his professional career he published more than 10,000 photos in most Croatian newspaper and magazine publications including Polet, Studentski list, Val, Oko, Mladina - (SLO), Studio, Danas, Start, Nedjeljna Dalmacija, Stil, Panorama, Slobodna Dalmacija, Glorija, Globus, and In Dekor – he was the editor in chief and photo editor. In association with journalist and friend Danijela Uzelac he conducted and photographed more than three hundred interviews with public persons from the world of theatre, show business, musical and politics. From those pictures he would create a series of photos to accompany the interviews. Here he proved to be one of the first photographers to produce portrait photography in the newspapers rather than simple documentary headshots. He is a member of the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts (ULUPUH), the Croatian Freelance Artists’ Association (HZSU) and Croatian Journalist Association (HND). Since 2005 he is a resident photographer of the weekly business journal “Lider”. From 2004 until 2008, in collaboration with several colleagues (the creative leader on the projects was Dražen Lapić), Jelenski participates in four photography monographs: “A u Lubenicama Lubenice”, “Lonjsko polje – Water in the Clouds”, “People from Pag island are probably/maybe/for sure/from Mars” and “Ćićarija – Proud Widow”, with Photo Art Union as publisher. In 2006 he produces another of his own projects, a photography monograph “Buđenja/Awakening”. The same year, he is awarded The Best Nature Photography, by FUJIFILM, Euro Press Professional Awards 2006. His photographic opus is enriched, as he continually seeks - artistic fulfilment by searching for new motifs. In this new photography monograph “Past in Present - Lubenice”, Željko Jelenski creates a unique pictorial exploration of the memory lane of the small town of Lubenice on the island of Cres in the region of Kvarner. His images lead viewers through an emotional legend similar to the real one told by generations, of the town in which a long time ago a young couple jumped off the rocks to die for the sake of their love. The cycle of the ancient sad tale is now complete with the photographs that transformed this unique Cres town into a pictorial legend! At present he is busy working on a photography monograph of the island of Pag, which will include landscapes and structural details of the unique stone indigenous to the island. The photography monograph about Pag will be called “Pag – the Island of Salt, Wind and Structures” and will be realized in 2011.

Photography by / Fotografija: Tena Jelenski

Jelenski odabire troje glazbenika, muškarce odijeva u klasična odijela, ženu u blago erotizirani kostim, naoružava ih saksofonom, bas-klarinetom, flautom i trubom. U kompozicijskom smislu uistinu vrijedi paradoks “Less is more”, jer autor svoje ikone postavlja u minimalan prostor, definiran jedino dvama rekvizitima – ljestvama i stolcem. U isto tako dobro konačnoj a beskonačnoj arhitekturi slobodno ih slaže u različite poze i snima. Kasnijim alkemijskim postupkom, u kojem se više puta izmjenjuju grafički negativi i pozitivi, koristeći se montažom, Jelenski dobiva niz crno-bijelih, bijelo-crnih kompozicija. Rezultat tog procesa foto-grafika je stvaran prizvuk zbiljske nestvarnosti, oslobođena od mimezisa progovara čistim, jasnim likovnim jezikom. Od samih početaka bavljenja fotografijom Jelenski se specijalizirao za portretnu koncertnu fotografiju, a do danas u njegovom portfoliju možemo naći mnoge svjetske glazbenike poput Franka Zappe, Santane, Davida Bowieja, Tine Turner, Keitha Richardsa, Lou Reeda, Skin (Skunk Anansie), Sky (Morcheeba), Johna Mayalla, Roberta Planta, Jimmyja Pagea, Joea Cockera, Stinga, Brucea Springsteena, Lennyja Kravitza, Hueya Morgana (Fun Lovin Criminals), The Edggea (U2), Micka Jonesa (The Clash), Alicea Coopera, Roberta Smitha (The Cure), Trickyja, Mobyja, Iggy Popa, Nicka Cavea, B.B. Kinga, Marcy Gray, Stacey Kent, Patriciju Barber, Jamesa Kartera, Sonnyja Rollinsa,Stevea Vaija, Henry Rollinsa, Bryana Ferryja, Billya Idola, Petera Gabriela i stotine drugih glazbenika, čije fotografije nose osobni izračaj autora. Priprema i foto-monografiju o svjetskim rock glazbenicima velikog formata na tristo stranica pod nazivom “Rock ‘n’ Roll On Stage by Jelenski”. Surađivao je u mnogim hrvatskim novinskim publikacijama (Polet, Studentski list, Val, Oko, Maldina - (SLO), Studio, Danas, Start, Nedjeljna Dalmacija, Stil, Panorama, Dekor - (glavni urednik i urednik fotografije), Slobodna Dalmacija, Glorija, Globus) u kojima je do sada objavio preko deset tisuća fotografija. Fotomonografija Paga pod nazivom “Pag – otok soli, vjetra i struktura” bit će realizirana 2011. godine.

Romantic picture fairytale where past and present intertwine, where imagination meets reality, and we are the protagonists, hidden deep within a rock and cloud. A stroll through the small Cres hamlet of Lubenice makes us fathom solitude and happiness; exist in the place as real as our imagination; The place made for us to be, simply be. Romantična bajka u slikama u kojoj se isprepliću prošlost i sadašnjost, mašta i stvarnost, sjeta i snovi, gdje smo glavni likovi mi sami, skriveni duboko u kamenu i oblaku.
