This September we mark 15 years since the passing of legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa with a season of his films. Alongside the rare chance to catch some of his beloved Samurai masterpieces on the big screen – including Throne of Blood and Seven Samurai – we also wanted to highlight other sides of his filmmaking, so look out for sweat-drenched police thriller Stray Dog, and the devastating humanist tale Ikiru – definitely have hankies to hand for this one! Without getting gloomy we’re also marking the passing of another entertainment great, Johnny Cash, with screenings of the personal documentary-drama My Father and the Man in Black, made by the son of Cash’s former manager. Other highlights this month include the return of Four Weddings and a Funeral’s Richard Curtis with About Time (rumoured to be his last film) – a big snuggly-blanket of a movie with a cracking performance from Bill Nighy. We’re also showing Jadoo – a charming new film made entirely in Leicester by director Amit Gupta (who grew up on Belgrave Road) – who joins us for a postscreening Q&A on Monday 16th Sep. Shy teenager Duncan is resigned to a boring summer on holiday with his mother and her overbearing boyfriend Trent, but that all changes when he meets Owen (Sam Rockwell), the eccentric owner of the local water park. Funny and moving in equal measure, with
great performances from Rockwell, Carell as the boorish Trent, and Allison Janney as a hilarious spinster neighbour.

Introduced by director Tony Palmer. We’re delighted to partner once again with Leicester International Music Festival for their 2013 programme. With this year's festival marking the centenary of Benjamin Britten, we present a screening of Tony Palmer's wonderful documentary, an indepth portrait of one of England's greatest composers. To help his son survive the horrors of a concentration camp, Guido pretends the Holocaust is a game. We’re huge fans of Carruth’s Primer, so are delighted to be screening his latest film. Upstream Colour begins when graphic designer Kris is poisoned with some unknown parasite in a nightclub. She meets Jeff who has also been infected, and they begin a relationship. As their symptoms start to manifest as shared pain and emotion, Kris and Jeff must fight to keep their separate identities and find who contaminated them. Another complex and head-spinning trip from Carruth.
In 1970s Los Angeles, nightclub singer Rudy and closeted lawyer Paul take in a teenager with Down Syndrome after he is abandoned by his mother. Facing a biased legal system and with their relationship called into question, the couple fight to maintain custody. A quietly devastating film that’s proved hugely popular on the festival circuit and picked up multiple awards. Alan Cumming’s raw and emotional rendition of the title track sends shivers down the spine.

Fri 20, Sun 22, Mon 23 Sep Dir: Jordan Vogt-Roberts Cast: Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso USA 2013, 1hr 34mins This feel-good comedy is the perfect film for the end of summer and an antidote to the melancholic air this time of year brings. Three boys, frustrated by their parents managing their lives, escape to the nearby woods and build their own house. Intending to live off the land, they soon discover a completely independent life may not be the utopia they imagined! Look out for a hilarious performance from Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson).

Dir: David Lowery Cast: Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck USA 2013, 1hr 45mins TBC
Dir: Paolo Sorrentino Cast: Toni Servillo Ita / Fra 2013, 2hrs 21mins, subtitled
Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone) and Rooney Mara (Side Effects) star as Bob and Ruth, Bonnie and Clyde-esque lovers in Texas who are separated when Bob is imprisoned. Years later Bob learns Ruth gave birth to their child and goes on the run to find her. In Bob’s absence Ruth has taken up with local Sheriff Patrick, who won’t give her up without a fight. Echoes of Malick abound (particularly Badlands) in this poetic and brilliantly-acted drama.
Attending glamorous parties and events for the great and good of Rome, Jep Gambardella is an ageing writer recollecting memories of a wasted youth. But when the music fades and the canapés are finished, what’s left? The Great Beauty is a visual tour de force, weaving music and imagery in a hypnotic flurry with exquisitely shot sequences capturing the decadence of the Italian high life. ‘ – a shimmering coup de cinema’ – The Telegraph.

Akira Kurosawa season This September marks 15 years since the passing of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, one of the most important filmmakers in the history of cinema. We commemorate his lasting influence with a season of his greatest works.
Double Bill.
Stray Dog PG
Ikiru PG
Although known for samurai movies, Kurosawa also made superb film noirs including this police thriller. After his pistol is stolen, hot-shot detective Murakami must team-up with veteran officer Sato to search the sweltering streets and bars of post-war Tokyo.
Kurosawa’s humanist masterpiece stars Takashi Shimura as Watanabe, a middle-aged Tokyo bureaucrat diagnosed with terminal cancer. Searching for meaning in his life, Watanabe resolves to spend his remaining time getting a children’s playground built. A personal and deeply moving film.
Throne of Blood 12A
Seven Samurai PG
Perhaps cinema’s greatest literary adaptation, Kurosawa deftly transplants Shakespeare’s Macbeth to feudal Japan. Toshiro Mifune stars as General Washizu, obsessed by a witch’s prophecy of power and seduced into murderous action by his wife Asaji.
We close the season with Kurosawa’s most famous and celebrated film. A village of farmers hire seven samurai to protect them from bandits who are returning to steal their crop. Full of brilliant characters and action-sequences, including the legendary rainsoaked final battle.
