With Halloween this month, it’s time for something a little less relaxing! We’ll be challenging horror fans to survive our all night horror movie marathon ‘Frightarama’ (p12). From horror to ‘Suspense’, we bring you a short season of Alfred Hitchcock classic thrillers including Daphne Du Maurier adaptations Rebecca and Jamaica Inn, the classic Rear Window, and Dial M for Murder – seen for the first time, as it was originally created, in 3D! (p13) We’re really excited this month to be launching the brand new Phoenix Interact Labs. Equipped with the latest kit – a 3D printer, Raspberry Pi computer development kit, computer-controlled lighting and a whole lot more – the Labs will enable artists, technologists and young people to get creative with digital technology. (p15) Children will also get the chance to dabble with computers over half term on our fun Scratch and Makey Makey workshop. Who needs a keyboard when you can use bananas! (p15) And lastly, a big hello to all students starting the new academic year. With cinema tickets just £5 with an NUS card, we hope you’ll take time out from your studies to pop into Phoenix every once in a while.

Dir: Woody Allen Cast: Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin USA 2013, 1hr 38mins

Dir: Denis Villeneuve Cast: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaall USA 2013, 2hrs 23mins

Woody Allen returns with his latest comedy-drama that’s broken records for indie film at the US box office and has had critics in raptures. Blanchett stars as Jasmine, an emotionally unstable New York socialite who flees to San Francisco and crashes her sister Ginger’s humble lifestyle. With her elitist attitude and acid

tongue rubbing Ginger’s family up the wrong way, Jasmine sees a chance to continue her high-life in the form of diplomat Dwight (Sarsgaard). A hilarious and poignant comedy with a sublime central performance from Blanchett; Woody on this form is irresistible.

Villeneuve’s (Incendies) Prisoners is the stand-out thriller of 2013, shocking and affecting with a daring moral conundrum at its centre. When Keller Dover's (Jackman) daughter and her friend go missing, dedicated officer Loki (Gyllenhaall) arrests local loner Alex, but with time running out Keller takes matters

into his own hands – how far will a desperate father go? A gripping, raw, sensationally-executed thriller, this is Villeneuve’s first non-foreign language film and deserves all the accolades it is garnering.

Fri 11 – Thu 17 Oct Dir: Oliver Hirschbiegel Cast: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews UK / France 2013, 1hr 53mins This luscious biopic comes from the director of 2004’s multi-award winning Downfall and covers the last two years of Princess Diana’s life after her divorce from Prince Charles. We see her highly publicised relationships with Dr. Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed, alongside her charity work and campaign against the use of land mines. In the title role Naomi Watts' performance brings warmth and humanity to a story that has been picked apart endlessly by the media

Dir: Jem Cohen Cast: Bobby Sommer Austria / USA 2012, 1hr 47mins, subtitled (parts)

Dir: Lake Bell Cast: Lake Bell, Fred Melamed USA 2013, 1hr 33mins

This gorgeous rumination on art and the ‘pleasures of looking’ follows Johanne, a genial guard at Vienna’s grand Kunsthistorisches Art Museum and his chance encounter with Canadian tourist Anne. Feeling an instant connection the two walk and talk through the museum, past masterpieces gazed at by yawning schoolchildren and out into the city of Vienna. A film about the simple joy of a shared experience.

This heart-warming and hilarious comedy stars Lake Bell as Carol – an underachieving voice-actor who has always been in the shadow of her father Sam ‘the king of voice overs’. With her father retiring, Carol is determined to take his place but faces stiff competition from a chauvinist industry and new rising star Gustav. Effortlessly enjoyable and funny, Fred Melamed (memorable as Sy Ableman in the Coen’s A Serious Man) is superb as Sam.

Attending glamorous parties for the great and good of Rome, Jep Gambardella is an ageing writer recollecting memories of a wasted youth. But when the music fades, what’s left? Films marked

Dir: Sean Ellis Cast: Jake Macapagal UK / Philippines 2013, 1hr 55mins, subtitled This riveting new film is set in the Philippines and won the Audience Award at Sundance Festival this year. A farmer in the provinces, Oscar Ramirez is forced to bring his family into the teeming capital city of Manila in a desperate search for work. Landing a job as a security guard due to his history in the army offers a glimmer of hope, but Oscar’s new partner is suspected of corruption and a thrilling heist-drama ensues.

Dir: Rene Clement Cast: Alain Delon Fra / Ita 1960, 1hr 53mins, subtitled The original (and in our opinion best) adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley stars a simmering Alain Delon in his star-making role as Tom Ripley, a fraudster sent to Italy by a rich friend’s father to bring his spendthrift son Phillipe home. Enchanted by Phillipe’s luxurious ways and his gorgeous girlfriend, Tom will go to extreme lengths to prolong his lavish new lifestyle. This sexy, sun-drenched thriller is presented in a new digital restoration.

Dir: Pascal Bonitzer Cast: Jean-Pierre Bacri, Kristin Scott Thomas France 2013, 1hr 40mins, subtitled Phoenix favourites Kristen Scott Thomas and Jean-Pierre Bacri star in this French comedy-drama. Bacri plays unhappy professor Damien, bored at work and ignored by his glamorous wife (Thomas) and Senior Judge father. When asked by a cute waitress at his university for his help with a deportation issue, Damien sees the chance to play the hero – now if only his father would take his calls! Like Ozon’s In the House, Looking for Hortense skewers middle-class pretension in an elegant fashion.

Dir: Haifaa Al-Mansour Cast: Reem Abdullah, Waad Mohammed Saudi Arabia 2012, 1hr 38mins, subtitled Back by popular demand, this superbly-acted Saudi Arabian film is reminiscent of 2012’s The Kid with a Bike, by turns charming and unexpectedly moving. Wadjda is a rebellious girl obsessed with buying a bicycle so she can beat local boy Abdullah in a race, but her mother is more concerned with persuading Wadjda’s father not to take another wife. In a country vilified for its attitude to women’s rights, that the film was made by a female director is a towering achievement.

Fletcher has lovingly crafted a heart-warming musical, with a great turn from the excellent Peter Mullan as you’ve never heard him before!

James McAvoy (The Last King Of Scotland) stars as Machiavellian police officer, Bruce Robertson, who we follow through the festive season as he tries to manipulate his way to a promotion and win his family back. Constantly abusing drugs, alcohol, women, colleagues, and himself, this adaption of Irvine Welsh’s (Trainspotting) bestselling novel is an entertaining dark comedy set to be something of a British cult classic. Never before has a film lived up to its title so emphatically!

Sat 12 Oct, 6.30pm Cast: Ray Milland, Grace Kelly USA 1954, 1hr 45mins

Sometimes in independent cinema things just fall into place: this macabre time of year; Everybody's Reading Festival telling us they had someone perfect to speak about Daphne du Maurier adaptations; and Curve's new show The Lovesong of Alfred J Hitchcock (27 Sep – 5 Oct). Surely the fates have aligned so we can put on this miniseason of five classic thrillers from the 'Master of Suspense'?

Made in 1953 during Hollywood’s first fling with 3D, the vogue for extra dimensions had finished by the time of its UK release so it was only ever seen here in 2D! Now digitally restored, Hitchcock’s stylish thriller sees ex Tennis-pro Tony (Ray Milland) plotting to kill his wife Margot (Grace Kelly).

Antipodes Layla Curtis 18 Oct – 21 Dec Cube gallery, cafebar and online Live webcams feeding images from opposite ends of the globe are the subject of this stunning new exhibition – part of Layla Curtis’s ongoing interactive online artwork Antipodes. Land is antipodal to land on only four per cent of the earth’s surface, but these distant twins offer rich ground for fascinating parallels and similarities. As far away from each other as it is possible to be, their day-fornight, summer/winter contrasts are palpable, often extreme, frequently possessing surprising affinities. The exhibition will feature an installation of live webcam feeds, alongside animations distilled from the streams of webcam footage recorded on the Antipodes website. Highlighting both the distance and the difference between us, Antipodes reminds us how technology is bringing us closer together. Phoenix is supporting the ongoing development of Antipodes by Layla Curtis, commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in association with Spacex. Technical support by Cuttlefish. Supported by Arts Council England.
