DARK HORSE

The advent of March means the awards season is over for another year, and we can focus once again on what we enjoy most here at Phoenix – taking you off the beaten track to bring you smaller-budget, high quality films you won’t see anywhere else in the city. There’s a very British feel to this month’s programme, with films spanning the human condition – love in all its forms, missed opportunities, and questions of morality. Highlights include The Duke of Burgundy, Hinterland, Catch Me Daddy and Still Life. We’re always interested in hearing what you – our customers – think, so we’ve installed a new film reviews board where you can share your thoughts about the movies you’ve seen. Just fill in a card and pin it up! For a Mother’s Day treat on Sunday 15th, look no further than Phoenix, where you can enjoy one of three great films and a delicious lunch with our great value Film & Dine offer. A new exhibition opens in our Cube gallery this month: The Crystal Line blends a WW1 crystal radio with internet technology to explore the future of modern warfare. We’re also running a workshop where you can build your own crystal radio. And later this month we’ll be publishing our first book – Hidden Stories – featuring original creative writing inspired by Leicester’s Cultural Quarter and beyond. Join us for the exhibition opening on 31 March, and enjoy live performances from award-winning writers.

Phoenix is a registered charity. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:

Mon 2 Mar, 6.15pm Dir: Harry Macqueen Cast: Lori Campbell UK 2014, 1hr 20mins

An enthralling psychological thriller from Denis Villeneuve (Incendies, Prisoners) guaranteed to make your skin crawl. Writer, director and star Macqueen’s debut is a tender travelogue with moments of wistful, tender longing, and features superb performances by director and singer-turned-actress Lori Campbell. Director Harry Macqueen joins us for a Q&A following the screening.

ART JULIAN OLIVER THE CRYSTAL LINE Cube Gallery, Free Fri 6 – Mon 30 Mar

Created by internationallyrenowned artist Julian Oliver, The Crystal Line reconstructs a World War One crystal radio as a way to hear about the future of warfare. The advent of radio communications revolutionised war, removing the need for human and animal messengers, and giving commanders more effective control of their troops on the frontline. The radios possessed an almost magical quality, turning electromagnetic phenomena in the air directly into electricity.

THE CRYSTAL LINE— THE FUTURE BATTLEFIELD HEARD THROUGH ITS PAST

Today, all wireless communications are descendants of the crystal radio, from mobile phones to wireless networking. The Crystal Line will scour the World Wide Web for the latest developments in warfare, transmitting them to the radio set complete with audio properties and textures unique to crystal radio set; heard just as men in the trenches would have heard them a century ago.
