Daniel Craig’s 007 explodes onto our screen in Spectre; Cate Blanchett gives an astonishing Oscar-worthy performance in Carol; Apple-creator Steve Jobs is under the microscope in the eponymous movie, skilfully portrayed by Michael Fassbender; and Peter Mullan is on fine form in the marvellously uplifting Hector.

Our annual charity screening in aid of Action Homeless, takes place on Fri 11 Dec (p5) – bring in a donation and exchange it for a free ticket to see Hector. And it just wouldn’t be Christmas without It’s a Wonderful Life (p7). There’s plenty going on for families too, with our Christmas Family Fun Day on Sat 5 Dec and a free 3D print workshop. Kids of all ages are eagerly awaiting the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, screening from Thu 17 Dec, and Pixar’s latest The Good Dinosaur is sure to be a hit with young and old alike.

Johnny Depp is back to his best as the notorious gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, who became an FBI informant in order to run organised crime in Boston. Based on a true story, Black Mass makes for gripping viewing, with fine performances from an ensemble cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton and Kevin Bacon.

Onwards and Outwards draws attention to the lack of knowledge surrounding the conditions for women working in the UK film industry, highlighting women filmmakers who have excelled in making works of independence and originality, and raising the profile of these key issues. Led by the ICA, in partnership with 11 other UK venues in cultural centres throughout the country, the programme serves as a public platform for productive debates amongst a diverse range of audiences. Onwards and Outwards is made possible with support from the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Following her boyfriend's suicide, supermarket worker Morvern Callar passes off his unpublished novel as her own and with the money her boyfriend left for his funeral, she and her closest friend leave Scotland for Ibiza. Their journey prompts a series of internal and external transformations for Morvern, bringing to light her experiences of grief, memory, freedom, and desire.

The film will be followed by a Q&A between course tutors G Sian and Dr. Laura Mee, discussing where we are with womanhood in cinema both in front of and behind the camera, how we arrived here and how we proceed.

Christmas opening: Phoenix will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. On the 23, 24, 26, 27, 30, 31 Dec we will open at the later time of 10am. On Christmas Eve, the kitchen will close at 6.30pm and the building will close at 9pm. Normal opening hours apply at other times.

PARKING There is a pay and display car park next to Phoenix. Parking costs £1 for up to 2 hours, £2 for 3 hours, £4 all day, and is free after 6pm. On Sundays and bank holidays there is a £1 charge from 6am-6pm and a maximum stay of 3hrs. Rutland Street NCP on Halford Street (LE1 1TQ) is a short walk from Phoenix and costs £4.40 all day for Phoenix customers. Tickets must be validated at the Box Office.
