Welcome To be honest this time of year is a bit of a nightmare for film programmers at independent cinemas, as the awards corridor arrives from December to March and with it an embarrassment of riches! With only so much screen space and so many great films to choose from, long hours are spent agonising over what to show and when, weighing up the various merits of The Railway Man against All is Lost, The Wolf of Wall Street versus August: Osage County. But enough, we make sure we fit everything in so you have the chance to see all the award contenders across the next couple of months before the BAFTA and Oscar ceremonies at the end of February. This month’s films are absolute crackers – Britain’s own Idris Elba gives a barnstormer of a performance in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Steve McQueen’s (Hunger, Shame) incendiary 12 Years a Slave, and the return of Scorsese with The Wolf of Wall Street. Then in Feb look out for the Coen Brothers’ new quirky masterpiece Inside Llewyn Davis, Matthew McConaughey with his best performance to date in The Dallas Buyers Club, and star-studded con man thriller American Hustle. Hunt the charismatic Englishman and Lauda the meticulous Austrian clashed on and off the track, but after Lauda suffers a near-fatal crash a grudging respect develops. At the brink of losing the love of her life, experimental filmmaker Maja Borg takes us on a poetic road trip through the financial collapse: from a broken past, via utopian futures, to the possibilities we have today. Seeing the economy as a human relationship, she invites us to explore how we could live differently. Carefully weaving archive footage, Super 8 film, and colour HD, Borg poignantly depicts the universal struggle between our heads and hearts. ‘Like Adam Curtis meets Star Trek. I loved it’ – Mark Cousins.

The Wolf of Wall Street 18 Fri 17 Jan – Thu 6 Feb Dir: Martin Scorsese Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jean Dujardin USA 2013, 2hrs 59mins Will this finally be Leo’s year to win an Oscar? With his incredible performance in Martin Scorsese’s new film - based on the tell-all autobiography of former stockbroker Jordan Belfort – we think he’s a strong contender.

We follow Belfort’s (DiCaprio) meteoric rise to the heights of Wall Street, and the inevitable fall as his world disintegrates in a storm of corruption, crime and some very angry FBI agents. We’re big fans of Hugo but it’s great to have Marty back making grown-up cinema,

and his sensational cast (including Matthew McConaughey and The Artist’s Jean Dujardin) delivers. It’s outrageous, incendiary stuff.

Dir: J. C. Chandor Cast: Robert Redford USA 2013, 1hr 46mins

The assassination of President John F Kennedy sent shockwaves into the heart of America that reverberated around the globe, and this new star-studded film follows the events of that day in November 1963 in Dallas, Texas. From the Chief of the Secret Service to the medical staff at Parkland Hospital and the office worker who captured the event on camera, Parkland reveals the chaotic and fascinating story behind one of modern history’s most infamous moments.

This superb new thriller from Romania stars Luminita Gheorghiu as affluent mother Cornelia, partly estranged from her spoilt grown-up son Barbu. When Barbu is held on suspicion of manslaughter, Cornelia sees a way to draw him back under her control by using her wealth and influence to persuade local officials to keep him out of prison. Part film-noir, part political drama, it feels fresh and relevant - an enthralling addition to the current new wave of Romanian Cinema.

Hollywood icon Redford stars as a sailor forced to confront his own mortality after crashing his boat into an abandoned shipping container. With no land in sight we follow the resourceful seaman as he desperately battles the elements. The film’s beauty, like Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, is in its remarkable simplicity: boat, sea, sky, and a man fighting for survival. It’s utterly enthralling from the first minute to the last, and Redford gives the performance of his career.

Fri 17 – Thu 30 Jan Dir: Jonathan Teplitzky Cast: Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman Australia / UK 2013, 1hr 56mins Based on the bestselling autobiography by Eric Lomax, this new drama stars Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) as an ex-soldier haunted by his experiences in World War II, encouraged by his new wife Patti (Kidman) to confront his past. Through flashback we see a younger Lomax’s (a superb Jeremy Irvine, War Horse) brutal treatment

at the hands of Japanese guards during his internment at a POW camp. Back in the present day Lomax discovers one of his former tormentors giving tours of the ruins of the camp. Should he take revenge? A complex, often heartbreaking look at the effects of warfare long after the battles have ended.

Rahimi’s stunning new film stars exiled Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani (About Elly) as a woman abandoned with her comatose husband in a war-torn city. Unable to leave and trapped by constant fire fights and bombardment, she spends her days telling the unresponsive man about her dreams, frustrations and desires, whilst indulging the affections of a young soldier. A sensual and deeply moving parable of modern-day Afghanistan with a gripping lead performance from Farahani.

‘***** – Prepare for an extraordinary offshore odyssey’ – The Telegraph

A film by Bill Morrison, original score by Jóhann Jóhannsson, produced by Forma.

A documentary shot in the North Atlantic about the fishing industry may not seem like everyone’s cup of tea, but Leviathan has been garnering rave reviews and award nominations across the globe. Thanks to new innovative filming techniques, we are hurled into the back-breaking life of a trawlerman – lashed by wind and rain – at the mercy of the ocean swell. Unlike anything you have seen before, it’s an astonishing trip.

The former coal mining communities in North East England are the subject of this inspired documentary by American artist-filmmaker Bill Morrison. Their story is told entirely without words, yet the film is far from silent: it features a remarkable original score by the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. This screening will be introduced by David Bell, author of The Dirty Thirty about the Leicestershire Miners' strike.

The Innocents 12A Sat 4 – Sun 5 Jan

The BFI’s season ‘Gothic: The Dark Heart of Film’ has sparked a national interest in this fascinating genre, so this month we present three new digital restorations alongside one of our favourite horror movies.

GOTHIC

REMASTERS & REISSUES The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 15 Fri 10 – Sat 11 Jan Dir: Dario Argento Cast: Tony Musante Italy / West Germany 1970, 1hr 32mins Following the sad news that actor Tony Musante passed away in November we thought we’d present this classic slice of Italian giallo for this month’s Cinema Bizarre: the feature debut of horror maestro Dario Argento. When Sam (Musante), an American writer in Rome witnesses an attempted murder at an art gallery, he tries to help the police solve the crime – making him a target for a black-glove-wearing serial killer.

La Belle et la Bête

PG

Fri 17 – Sun 19 Jan Dir: Jean Cocteau Cast: Jean Marais, Josette Day France 1941, 1hr 34mins, subtitled Premiering at the Cannes film festival to great acclaim, Cocteau's timeless gothic fairy tale looks better than ever thanks to a digital restoration by the BFI. After her father angers the cursed master of a nearby castle, young Belle is condemned to live with this ‘Beast’. Can true love bloom in his gothic castle? What is digital restoration? Find out about the painstaking restoration work carried out by the BFI to bring old classic films back to their former glory - visit www.bfi.org.uk/live/video/326

Dir: Jack Clayton Cast: Deborah Kerr USA / UK 1961, 1hr 40mins Arriving in a gorgeous new digital restoration from the BFI, Clayton’s adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of The Screw is a masterclass in creeping terror. Hired to care for two orphaned children, prim governess Miss Giddens (Kerr) is disturbed by their odd behaviour. Believing them to be controlled by the spirit of their former governess, Giddens becomes determined to free them from their possession. A ghost story for grown-ups.

The Night of The Hunter 12A Fri 24 - Mon 27 Jan Dir: Charles Laughton Cast: Robert Mitchum USA 1955, 1hr 32mins It must be one of cinema’s saddest tales that after the poor critical and commercial response to his debut, Charles Laughton never directed another film. Nowadays, The Night of the Hunter is rightly regarded as a masterpiece. A dark gorgeouslyshot Southern tale of murder and greed, with the influence of the German Expressionist films of the ‘20s seen in its abstract framing and long shadows. This new digital restoration is a twisted treat.

Journey back to Leicester’s industrial past Got a smartphone? Next time you visit Phoenix, download the free St Georges app and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the city’s Cultural Quarter. The new app is the result of a six month project – a partnership between Phoenix, the University of Leicester and app developer Cuttlefish – which explored how the industrial landscape of St Georges has evolved from the Victorian era to the present day. You can use it anywhere but it’s best as a walking guide, letting you stroll around 26 of the area’s historic buildings – brought to life by articles, historical news reports, photographs, and recordings from the people who lived and worked in them. St Georges was once a hive of industry, dominated by factories and warehouses, but by the 1960s – in the face of foreign competition – it was in decline. Old family firms were bought-out, relocated or failed until by the late 1990s much of the area was unused. Today, as the Cultural Quarter, St Georges is experiencing a rebirth as a home for cultural and creative industries.

Use the free wi-fi at Phoenix to download the app and pre-load the guide before you start to explore! Ask for the Wi-Fi code at the bar.
