Another awards season has been and gone and, whilst we love them here at the Phoenix, this month we look forward to going back to what we do best. That is, of course, giving film fans the chance to explore the depth and breadth of world cinema. If you weren’t excited enough about the release of Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, this month you can watch every one of his films in our Wes AnderSeason. Do you fancy learning about the man behind the movies? Our one-day course (p15) gives an overview of Anderson’s delightfully quirky and stylish film career. Perhaps you’re already thinking of expanding your film horizons? We currently have a variety of courses including 10 Great British Directors which explores the key names – from David Lean to The Boulting Brothers – who defined the very ideals of ‘Britishness’. On top of highly anticipated movies like Her and The Book Thief, we’re also screening French dramas Stranger by the Lake and Beau Travail plus a Japanese remake of the 1992 Clint Eastwood classic, Unforgiven. Something for the kids – and adults if we’re honest – The Princess Bride and The Lego Movie are sure to delight movie goers of all ages. Budding fashionistas should check out documentary Mademoiselle C, paired with the new restoration of Funny Face starring Audrey Hepburn for a chic double bill on Sat 29th March.

Dallas Buyers Club

Sat 1 – Thu 13 Mar Dir: Jean-Marc Vallée Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto USA 2013, 1hr 53mins Matthew McConaughey gives the performance of his career as Ron Woodroof, a rodeo hustler diagnosed HIV positive who starts smuggling medicine across the border from Mexico. At first only looking out for himself, the homophobic Woodroof gradually has his eyes opened to the ongoing

AIDS crisis in America thanks to his friendship / business partnership with transexual Rayon (a sublime performance from Leto). Hardhitting, heartbreaking and at times surprisingly funny, it’s a film that pulls no punches and deserves every award it’s garnering.

Dir: Ralph Fiennes Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas UK 2013, 1hr 51mins

Dir: George Clooney Cast: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray USA / Germany 2014, 1hr 58mins

Dir: Alfonso Caurón Cast: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney USA / UK 2013, 1hr 31mins

Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in this lavish biopic about Charles Dickens’ secret mistress Nelly, a young actress. Beginning with Nelly’s later life as a school teacher, we flash back to their first meeting in London where Charles is immediately infatuated with her beauty. In return Nelly finds herself seduced by his talent and charisma, but doesn’t want to live the rest of her life as the ‘other woman’. Superb support comes from Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Hollander and Joanna Scanlan.

A sharp, funny, boy’s own adventure story – from the producers of Oscar winner Argo – of a band of brothers prepared to die in defence of mankind’s greatest achievements. Based on the unlikely true story of an Allied platoon during the closing months of World War II, a rag-tag group of ageing museum curators, sculptors and art historians head to the front line, commanded by President Roosevelt, to rescue art pieces stolen by the Nazis. George Clooney directs and leads alongside an all-star cast.

Back by popular demand, the multi award-winning Gravity sees the long overdue return of Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men). George Clooney (Solaris) and Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) star as two astronauts carrying out routine maintenance on their shuttle when disaster strikes leaving them adrift in outer space. It’s breath-taking, mind-bending cinema, revelling in the spectacle of the big screen. Cuarón never lets up the suspense with heart-thumping action and inventive plot jumps. Gravity is a science fiction tour de force.

Fri 7 – Thu 20 Mar Dir: Wes Anderson Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray USA / Germany 2014, 1hr 40mins Wes Anderson’s new film arrives on a wave of praise from its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Zero Moustafa, the owner of the eponymous hotel, recounts his early tutelage under head concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes– on cracking form and clearly having

a great time). Through his conciergely ‘duty’, seducing the hotel’s elderly guests, Gustave is bequeathed a valuable painting, something the deceased lady’s family will stop at nothing to retrieve. It’s farcical, funny and an absolute delight, with every scene

Fri 14 – Thu 20 Mar

Fri 14 – Mon 17 Mar

Dir: Spike Jonze Cast: Joaquin Phoenix USA 2013, 2hrs 6mins

Dir: Scott Cooper Cast: Christian Bale, Casey Affleck USA / UK 2013, 1hr 57mins

Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely, introverted man who writes love letters for people who cannot express their emotions. Struggling through a divorce from his childhood sweetheart, Theodore purchases ‘Samantha’, an electronic organiser (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) who – against his better judgement – he begins to fall for. Director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich) laces together an array of stunning imagery with a sumptuous electronic soundtrack. A moving and bittersweet look at the profound effect technology is having on romance.

Drenched in the sweat and grime of a declining steel industry town, Out of the Furnace is a tough, superbly-acted parable of recession in modern America. Returning to his home town after being imprisoned, Russell Baze finds his girlfriend has moved in with the town’s police chief and his brother Rodney (Affleck) is involved in an illegal fighting ring, overseen by terrifying local crime boss DeGroat (Harrelson). When Rodney disappears and the local police are sluggish to respond, Russell decides to take the law into his own hands.

Fri 21 Mar – Thu 3 Apr Dir: Jonathan Glazer Cast: Scarlett Johansson UK 2013, 1hr 48mins The new film from Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) stars Scarlett Johansson as Laura, a predatory extraterrestrial experiencing life on earth in a human body. Travelling through Scotland and picking off lonely men who won’t be missed, Laura’s other-worldly femme fatale wants to experience the breadth of human behaviour from desire to death. With minimal dialogue, it’s

a mind-blowing visual experience. Reminiscent of The Man Who Fell to Earth, 2001: A Space Odyssey and more recent cerebral fare like Upstream Colour, Under The Skin preys on the mind for days afterwards and is destined for cult classic status.

Dir: Stephen Frears Cast: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan UK / USA 2013, 1hr 38mins

Dir: Alex Gibney Documentary USA 2013, 2hrs 4mins

Back by popular demand, this superb drama from Stephen Frears (The Queen) stars Phoenix favourite Judi Dench as Philomena Lee, a retired nurse searching for a son she was forced to give up for adoption nearly 50 years ago. Her story is picked up by Martin Sixsmith (Coogan), a world-weary journalist recently axed from the BBC and together they follow a lead to America. Based on a real life story; it’s funny, bittersweet and tremendously moving.

In 2009, Oscar-winning director Gibney set out to make a documentary praising the champion cyclist for his superhuman achievements. But with the revelation of Armstrong's doping, Gibney was forced to shift the focus of his film, searching for an understanding of Armstrong’s incredible deception. Using a combination of race and press footage plus insightful interviews from former friends and team members, what emerges is a portrait of a ruthless sportsman blinded by power.

Mon 17 – Thu 20 Mar Dir: Alain Guiraudie Cast: Pierre Deladonchamps, Christophe Paou France 2013, 1hr 40mins, subtitled Set at an intimate lakeside gay cruising spot, Guiraudie's critically acclaimed drama-thriller is a heady mix of sex and crime. Visiting the beach daily, Franck lusts after the enigmatic Michel (Paou). A terrible crime is committed and Franck finds his insatiable desire overwhelming his morals; his passion only fuelled by the knowledge of danger. Unashamedly forthright and explicit, but never exploitative, Stranger by the Lake offers a fascinating contrast between the openness of nature and a secretive community.

Hollywood has always plundered Japanese cinema for remakes, so it’s good to see the roles reversed. Clint Eastwood’s 1992 film is transported from the Wild West to the serene beauty of late 19th century Japan. Jubee (Watanabe), a former merciless Samurai now poor farmer, is approached by an old friend with one last job – to track down a gang of outlaws with a bounty on their heads. Gorgeously shot on the plains of Hokkaido, themes of honour, pride and self sacrifice run deep.

Dir: Jim Jarmusch Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton UK / USA 2013, 2hrs 3mins

Claire Denis’ new film is a murky, atmospheric thriller following Marco (Lindon), a ship’s captain who goes AWOL after his brotherin-law’s suicide. Finding his sister’s family in ruins, Marco resolves to punish powerful business man Edouard, who he believes is complicit in their downfall. Renting an apartment above Edouard’s mistress in order to plan his revenge, Marco soon finds himself falling for the mysterious woman but is unprepared for the secrets she keeps.

Dir: Ted Kotcheff Cast: Donald Pleasence, Gary Bond Australia / USA 1971, 1hr 48mins

To mark the release of Claire Denis’s new film Bastards (Fri 28 – Mon 31 Mar) we are screening one of her earlier films Beau Travail. A former master sergeant in the French Foreign Legion, Galoup recalls his time in Djibouti. A strict commander, Galoup’s jealousy is aroused when a handsome new recruit becomes popular both within the troop and with Galoup’s superior officer. A tale of envy and repression set amidst the regimented army world and sweltering heat of the desert. It’s a hypnotic, enthralling film and a masterpiece of French cinema.

“The best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence” – Nick Cave A hallucinatory nightmare and a keystone film of the 1970s, Wake in Fright has been painstakingly restored by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia. En route to Sydney, soft-spoken priggish teacher John Grant arrives in ‘The Yabba’, a midsize mining town in the Outback. Intending to stay one night, John is horrified by what he sees as the uncultured barbarism of the hard-drinking, hard-gambling locals; but horror soon turns to fascination. Wake in Fright has lost none of its power to shock; a brutal midnight kangaroo hunt in particular remains deeply unsettling.

Digital Art

Frequencies (a) by Nicolas Bernier

Thu 13 – Sat 22 Mar Cube gallery at Phoenix, free entry Frequencies (a) by Canadian artist Nicolas Bernier is an installation of sound and light. Winner of the prestigious Golden Nica prize at Ars Electronica festival, the artwork merges the piercing hum of mechanicallytriggered tuning forks with pure digital soundwaves. Streams of light burst in harmony with the forks, alternately illuminating the exhibition in stark white light and plunging it into complete darkness. Frequencies (a) continues Nicolas Bernier’s exploration of the relationship between organic sound and digital techniques and launches as part of Visible Bits, Audible Bytes.

Visible Bits, Audible Bytes 2014 Wed 12 Mar Free Visible Bits, Audible Bytes is an event which champions the soundtrack and explores the relationship between sound and the moving image. The event brings together leading international artists to present contemporary works alongside significant historical works from the archives of the British Film Institute. This year we’re proud to present an international programme featuring a performance of Frequencies (Synthetic Variations) by Nicolas Bernier amongst a selection of live works, compositions and screenings.

Timetable: Talks— 3pm – 5pm Frequencies (a) exhibition preview— 5pm Main concert— 6.30pm After party with VJ performances— 8pm – late Booking for the talks and main concert are essential – please contact the Phoenix box office.
