Jimmy’s Hall

12A

Fri 30 May – Thu 12 Jun Dir. Ken Loach Cast: Barry Ward, Andrew Scott UK/Ireland 2014, 1hr 46mins This powerful new film from the writer and director team of The Wind that Shakes the Barley is based on the life of Jimmy Gralton, an Irish political activist in the 1920s and 30s. After building a dance hall so young people could have a place to learn, debate and have fun, Jimmy faced violent clashes with the Church over his communist views.

A gorgeously-shot period film with a great ensemble cast including Andrew Scott (Sherlock) and Jim Norton (Father Ted), it’s rumoured to be Ken Loach’s last film, so it comes as no surprise he’s returned to issues close to his heart – freedom from oppression and the rights of the common man.

Fri 30 May – Mon 2 Jun Dir. Gareth Evans Cast: Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle Indonesia 2014, 2hrs 30mins, subtitled Exploding back onto screen in a flurry of feet and fists, this sequel to 2012’s barnstorming The Raid is a breathless and brilliant action movie.

Anthony Chen's feature directorial debut is a bittersweet indie-drama. In the midst of the financial crisis in 1990s Singapore, Teresa, a Filipino maid searching for a better life, begins working for a middle-class family. Despite initially clashing with the family’s spoilt son Jiale, Terese and the boy soon develop an inseparable bond but this arouses the jealousy of Jiale’s mother. Heartfelt and sincere, this festival circuit favourite explores class tensions and changing human relationships with a delicate touch.

Blue Ruin

Fri 6 – Sun 15 Jun (excl Sun 8 & Thu 12) Dir. Jeremy Saulnier Cast: Macon Blair, Devin Ratray USA 2013, 1hr 30mins This terrific indie flick has garnered a lot of buzz since its premiere at Cannes last year and for good reason – an edge-of-your-seat ride, Blue Ruin is a revenge thriller not afraid to get its hands dirty. Living out of his rusty old car, bearded loner Dwight learns that the person he believes murdered his parents is due to be released from prison. Desperate to confront him, Dwight kick-starts a series of events that spiral violently out of control. Constantly gripping and in parts wickedly funny, we wait with bated breath for the next film from director Saulnier.

Fri 6 – Thu 19 Jun Dir. Lenny Abrahamson Cast: Michael Fassbender, Domnhall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal UK/Ireland 2014, 1hr 35mins Abrahamson’s wonderful new film is loosely based on the experiences of journalist Jon Ronson who played keyboards for cult singing phenomenon Frank Sidebottom (he of the huge papier mâché head). In the film Jon is played by Gleeson, a bored young office drone who jumps at the chance to accompany Frank

(Fassbender underneath the mask) and his misfit band to a recording retreat in the Irish countryside where Frank walks a thin line between madness and genius. Sharing videos of their work online, Jon is contacted about a gig at the SXSW Festival in Texas – but is the band ready for the spotlight? Don’t be put off by the

Sun 15 – Thu 19 Jun

Fri 20 – Sun 22 Jun

Dir. Hany Abu-Assad Cast: Adam Bakri, Leem Lubany Palestine 2013, 1hr 38mins, subtitled

Dir. E.L. Katz Cast: Pat Healy, Ethan Embry USA 2013, 1hr 26mins

Abu-Assad's Oscar-nominated and Cannes Jury Prize winner is set in the war-torn reality of the occupied territories and told through the eyes of Palestinian baker Omar. Routinely climbing over the isolation wall to see his girlfriend, after the shooting of an Israeli soldier Omar is arrested and blackmailed into becoming an informant for the military police. Under watch by his Israeli handler and with his life in constant danger from both sides; a thrilling story of friendship, trust and betrayal ensues.

E.L. Katz's debut feature is a supremely-twisted black comedy packed with laughs and gore in equal measure. After losing his job, family-man Craig meets his ex-con school friend Vince at the local bar. Whilst toasting their depressing lives the two buddies are approached by an enigmatic couple who want to pay them to commit increasingly outlandish dares because ‘what doesn’t kill you, makes you richer’. As the cash and stakes escalate and the blood flows, how far will Craig go to provide for his family?

Fri 20 – Thu 26 Jun Dir. Hayao Miyazaki Cast: Hideaki Anno (voice), Miori Takimoto (voice) Japan 2013, 2hrs 7mins, subtitled Based on the life of celebrated airplane designer Jiro Horikoshi, The Wind Rises follows his early days as a wannabe pilot and takes in key moments in Japanese history including the Great Depression and Japan’s entry into WWII. With his fascination inspired by peaceful, civilian uses for aircraft, Jiro becomes disillusioned as his designs are used for fighter planes. Reportedly Miyazaki’s last film, the genius Japanese animation supremo is going out with a beautiful and heartfelt work of art.

Dir. Mark Cousins Documentary UK 2013, 1hr 46mins

From BAFTA-winning director Bruce Goodison this moving coming-of-age drama follows young teenager Omar – whose refugee status in the UK is about to be decided. When a boy from Omar’s hometown in Afghanistan arrives, the secret he knows about Omar’s past threatens to derail his asylum plea. Packed with strong performances from first-time talent and acclaimed actor Toby Jones (Berberian Sound Studio), the soundtrack comes from Mercury Award-winning band Alt-J. Screening to mark Refugee Week.

A joyful celebration of childhood and the movies from the man behind The Story of Film. Filming his niece and nephew playing one lazy Sunday morning, director Mark Cousins uses the footage as a jumping-off point to explore the commonality between portrayals of children on screen in over 50 films from 25 countries. Including classics like ET the Extra-Terrestrial and The Red Balloon plus many rarely seen masterpieces, it makes for fascinating viewing.

A Touch of Sin

(Tianzhu ding) Mon 23 – Thu 26 Jun Dir. Zhang-KeJia Cast: Wu Jiang, Vivien Li China 2013, 2hrs 10mins, subtitled An incendiary look at life in modern China, Zhangke Jia’s (Still Life) film traces the impact of violence on four ordinary people: a sauna receptionist having an affair with a married man; a miner sick of corrupt officials; a worker desperately trying to eke out a living in low-paid jobs; and a migrant exploring the power owning a gun grants him. With multi-layered, fascinating characters that refuse to fit into easily defined notions of ‘good’ or ‘bad’, it’s thoughtful world cinema to be mulled over.

Clint Eastwood Cast: John Lloyd Young, Christopher Walken USA 2014, 2hrs 14mins Based on the smash hit Tony Award-winning musical of the same name, Jersey Boys tells the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic group The Four Seasons. Fading Gigolo

15

Fri 27 Jun – Thu 3 Jul Dir. John Turturro Cast: John Turturro, Woody Allen USA 2013, 1hr 30mins John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) stars as unassuming florist Fioravante, persuaded by his best friend Murray (Allen) to provide a ‘service’ to several lonely women in Upper Manhattan. Discovering that the shy and not conventionally attractive Fioravante is catnip for certain women, Murray decides to become his ‘manager’ and expand his client base to the Jewish Orthodox community. A gentle, bittersweet hymn to ageing, love and loneliness, Allen is superb as the fast talking Murray – particularly when he’s hauled before a tribunal of Rabbi elders to explain himself!

it’s a triumphant feel-good story of the men responsible for some of the 60’s biggest hits including ‘Sherry’, ‘Big Girls Don't Cry’ and ‘Walk Like a Man’, all instantly recognisable thanks to Frankie Vallie’s trademark falsetto.

James Dean Season To mark the release of a new digital restoration of Rebel Without a Cause, we’re pleased to screen the three completed films of screen icon James Dean, tragically killed in a car accident in September 1955.

Rebel without a Cause

Dir. Elia Kazan Cast: Julie Harris, James Dean USA 1955, 1hr 50mins

Dir. Nicholas Ray Cast: James Dean, Natalie Wood USA 1955, 1hr 48mins

James Dean burst onto the scene in March 1955, playing Cal Trask in this adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel. Set during the lead up to America’s entry into WWI, Cal is desperate for his father’s love and respect but is always second to favourite son Aron. Dean’s raw and vulnerable performance earned him a posthumous Oscar nomination.

With his cool gaze, blond quiff and leather jacket, James Dean forever identified himself as the rebellious teen in Nicholas Ray’s 1955 film, released just a month after his death. Arriving in Los Angeles, teenager Jim Stark must prove himself to local bullies with switchblade knife fights and ‘chickie runs’ in which cars race toward a seaside cliff.

Band Baja Jukebox! LCB Depot, Rutland Street Mon 23 – Sun 29 Sun Discover the pop music of India in this glorious retro jukebox – an installation created by An Indian Summer and Phoenix Interact Labs.

River Studies is an ongoing project that explores how rivers affect people and cultures. Blending photography, data visualisation and cartography, the exhibition will feature a fascinating array of films and prints, alongside an interactive online artwork: play.riverstudies.org. Rivers have a long and complex relationship with human society, carving pathways that accumulate history and identity. How much of it is reflected by their appearance? Some differences are inevitable: urban and rural areas, changes in vegetation. But there are also more gradual and subtle differences to discover and explore.

Map of Indian Rivers The geography and rivers of India are also explored on the walls of the café bar in an art piece which blends hand painting with projection.
