A year ago we screened Frankenstein, our first National Theatre Live performance. For the first time, our customers were able to enjoy the magic of London theatre beamed live-via-satellite into our cinema screens in Leicester. The response to these performances over the last year has been so encouraging that we’re launching Stage on Screen, a season of 13 magnificent screenings over the summer months. Join us for some of the world’s greatest shows including Shakespeare from the Globe, opera from Glyndebourne, further NT Live performances and Pompeii Live, the first cinema event from the British Museum! This month – regrettably - we’re also announcing an increase to our film ticket prices. Our new ticket prices are still cheaper than the city’s commercial cinemas, and we’re confident Phoenix continue to provide not just great value, but something unique in the city. The new prices will help us cover the rising costs of doing business, and ensure Phoenix continues to thrive in the face of reduced public spending on arts and culture nationwide. And whilst our standard prices are rising, we’ve also started to introduce some lower-priced offers for children and young people, retirees and - with our new Access Screenings – disabled people. As a charity, any money Phoenix makes is reinvested into our film, art and educational programmes. We hope you’ll continue to support us and help us develop further.

Much Ado About Nothing 12A Fri 14 - Thu 27 Jun Dir: Joss Whedon Cast: Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion USA 2012, 1hr 48mins This gorgeous, bluesy, black and white adaptation of one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies comes from Joss Whedon, marking a big change of pace after his blockbuster success last year with The Avengers. One thing that’s been a constant through Whedon’s work is an understanding of character and a canny ear for dialogue – in Shakespeare he has found his perfect screenwriting partner. The two youngsters dancing to David Bowie’s Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola is particularly moving.

Dir: Hannes Lang Germany / Italy 2011, 1hr 26mins

Dir: Musa Syeed Kashmir 2012, 1hr 22mins

Every year thousands of tourists flock to the white winter paradise of the mountains. Due to climate change and the lack of snow, it’s been necessary to develop powerful technology to manufacture an ideal landscape. This fascinating film observes this process of transformation over the course of one year.

Dal Lake in Kashmir is an area of natural beauty torn apart by political violence. Two friends try to flee but become trapped on the lake with a young woman researching its ecosystem, and the three must navigate the floating landscape together. Beautifully shot, Valley of Saints weaves together documentary, fiction and ancient myths.
