COMING IN JULY

QUEEN AND COUNTRY

With the arrival of June, we say hello to the sun (hopefully!) and An Indian Summer Festival, where we join other Cultural Quarter venues to celebrate South Asian arts and culture. As part of our festival offering we’re screening films and documentaries from the subcontinent, and artist Hetain Patel’s multi-screen video installation Heaven and Earth will be in our Cube Gallery from Friday 19 June. We’ll also be launching our new monthly programme of Indian children’s films - in partnership with the Children’s Film Society, India - with the charming family movie Gattu (20 & 21 Jun), which tells the story of a young boy’s dream to be a champion kite flier. Our Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema season opens this month too, with Mother Joan of the Angels (Sat 6 Jun) and Knights of the Black Cross (Sun 28 Jun). And if you fancy a blast from the past, we’re marking the 40th anniversary of Jaws with a couple of special anniversary screenings on 35mm. As ever, we aim to make our programme a window on the world, with movies from 13 countries and Stage on Screen productions that explore the richness and diversity of humankind. For a relaxing evening, let our kitchen take the strain and combine dinner with a show. We’ve a new summer menu, an extended list of world wines, a wider selection of draught real ales and speciality bottled beers in our Café Bar. Our Film & Dine offer is fantastic value, so go on… treat yourself.

Phoenix is a registered charity. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:

THE CONNECTION

the crime network and his corrupt superiors. Set over the course of 6 years, Jimenez’s stylish crime epic offers a distinctly Gallic take on the drug operations first explored in William Friedkin’s 1971 classic The French Connection.

LAMBERT AND STAMP 15

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Swinging London in the 1960s and two young filmmakers from opposite sides of the tracks are looking for subjects for their underground art movie. They discover the ‘High Numbers’ - a rebellious group that matches their anarchic outlook – and fall into managing the band, renaming them The Who and mentoring their meteoric rise to fame. This fascinating true story is packed with anecdotes and wild tales of fame and fortunes lost and won.

When a highly intelligent dormant peacekeeping programme turns against the Avengers and becomes hell-bent on destroying life on earth, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye reassemble to fight this new robotic foe. A huge action-spectacular that finds time to flesh out our heroes’ back stories, Age of Ultron is a witty and exciting blockbuster.

With nothing to work on and his relationship with his girlfriend falling apart, he seeks refuge with his writing idol Ike Zimmerman who offers him solitude in his isolated summer home. Will either writer turn out to be the great man they think themselves to be? Alex Ross Perry’s comedy drama is a biting look at the trappings of the literary lifestyle.

Director Wes Orshoski joins us for a Q&A after the screening.

After the passing of his mother, Evan - a twenty-something with no future prospects - sets off backpacking in Europe where he meets a beautiful and mysterious young woman. Romance blooms, but the woman holds a deep, dark secret. CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA

15

Fri 12 - Thu 18 Jun Dir: Olivier Assayas Cast: Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart France / Switzerland / Germany 2014, 2hrs 4mins At the peak of her career, actress Maria Enders (Binoche) is given the opportunity to return to a play that made her famous twenty years ago. Heading to a remote hillside retreat to rehearse with her assistant (Stewart), Maria

re-evaluates her past and talent. A bewitching and superbly-acted rumination on aging and fame, Stewart in particular is brilliant in a role that won her a César (a French Oscar), the first American ever to do so.

12A

Fri 19 - Mon 22 Jun Dir: Joshua Oppenheimer Indonesia 2014, 1hr 39mins

Oppenheimer’s second documentary on the 1960’s Indonesian massacres is as challenging, unsettling and downright terrifying as its predecessor, The Act of Killing. We follow Adi, a young Indonesian man who gets the chance to meet the men responsible for his brother’s murder. The Look of Silence offers an uncompromising glimpse into a country struggling to overcome deep scars.

THE TRIBE

18

Mon 22 - Thu 25 Jun Dir: Miroslav Slaboshpitsky Cast: Grigoriy Fesenko, Yana Novikova Ukraine / Netherlands 2014, 2hrs 12mins

Visceral and at times jaw-droppingly hard to watch, The Tribe is filmed without dialogue and completely in sign language. Arriving at a boarding school for the deaf, new boy Serge soon adapts to the savage pack lifestyle of the other children. Developing a crush on a fellow student, Serge soon incurs the wrath of the student ‘pack’ hierarchy. A staggering achievement in filmmaking and storytelling, The Tribe sears itself into the memory.

MR HOLMES

PG

Fri 19 Jun - Thu 2 Jul Dir: Bill Condon Cast: Sir Ian McKellen, Laura Linney UK 2015, 1hr 44mins Set in post-Second World War Britain, Sir Ian McKellen plays an aging Sherlock Holmes now retired and tending bees in a cottage near the South Coast. Inspired by his housekeeper’s eager son and aware that his famous intellect is succumbing to age, Holmes sets out to write a detective story based on his final unsolved case.

Delving into his hazy memories, the film switches between flashbacks of the debonair young detective investigating the disappearance of a woman thirty years ago and the current day, as Holmes searches for a cure for his failing memory. Featuring a masterful performance from McKellen (too early for an awards shout?), it’s a thoughtful and moving film.

MOTHER JOAN OF THE ANGELS PG

KNIGHTS OF THE BLACK CROSS PG

Sat 6 Jun, 2.15pm Dir: Jerzy Kawalerowicz Poland 1961, 1hr 51mins

Sun 28 Jun, 12.30pm Dir: Aleksander Ford Poland 1960, 2hrs 53mins

Notionally, this is based on the same historical events that inspired Ken Russell's The Devils, but Kawalerowicz's treatment is subtler and more psychologically acute. In an extraordinary performance, Lucyna Winnicka plays an allegedly possessed abbess who's investigated by a priest (Mieczysław Voit), hopelessly out of his depth when confronted with forces he doesn't understand.

One of Poland's biggest hits, this lavish widescreen epic was based on Henryk Sienkiewicz's muchloved novel, The Teutonic Knights. Set at the turn of the 15th century, it depicts the tension between the Poles and Lithuanians and their Teutonic neighbours, culminating in a thrilling reconstruction of the 1410 Battle of Grunwald (a pivotal event in Polish history) which featured thousands of extras.

Martin Scorsese presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema is currently organised by DI Factory, all DOTS, Propaganda Foundation and The Film Foundation, in cooperation with Tor, Zebra and Kadr film studios, in partnership with the National Audiovisual Institute of Poland, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland and the Polish Film Institute

ART HEAVEN AND EARTH BY HETAIN PATEL

IN CONVERSATION WITH GUNEET MONGA + PREMATURE 18

Fri 19 Jun – Sun 12 Jul Cube Gallery, Free

Wed 17 Jun, 7.30pm - 9.30pm Tickets: £4

Hetain Patel is a UK-based artist whose work explores the concept of ‘being’ through language and physical movement. In Heaven and Earth, he uses archive footage of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri’s solo tabla performance at the Darbar Festival in 2012 to create his own performance that responds to, and is synchronised with, the timing of the concert.

15 – 15

Filmed at Patel’s home, Heaven & Earth’s small scale, pedestrian aesthetic contrast with the magic and intricacy of the concert. Footage from both settings sits side-by-side connected by time, rhythm and movement. "It is Patel’s skilled precision in realising an almost seamless harmony of his culturally and historically divergent source material that gives his installations a distinctive resonance." Heaven & Earth is commissioned by Darbar with support from Arts Council England

BAFTA-nominated producer, Guneet Monga (The Lunchbox, Gangs of Wasseypur, The Congress) joins Indian film producer Terry Mardi for a talk about India's underground film industry.

HETAIN PATEL IN CONVERSATION WITH G SIAN Sun 28 Jun, 3pm Phoenix Courtyard Suite

An Indian Summer’s creative director G Sian talks to Hetain Patel about what it means to be an artist who just happens to be Indian and who still wishes he was Spiderman! Why do we feel the need to ‘perform’ in our everyday lives. Is it in an effort to fit in, to stand out… or both? Searching for an identity is a universal pursuit Patel explores through his work.

We follow with a 45 minute screening of PREMature, the first episode of a new UK coming-ofage drama following a troubled teenager, co-produced by Terry Mardi.

Guneet Monga - Producer of the Bafta nominated film, 'The Lunchbox'
