July sees the start of the school summer holidays and following the success of The Spark Festival – when more families than ever visited Phoenix – we’ve laid on a feast of films, workshops and fun for kids, including How to Train your Dragon 2 which continues the story of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless – there’s even a free treat for every child! In our café bar we’ve introduced great value kids’ lunchbags, or you can bring a packed lunch for the little ones and enjoy our newly-planted garden area complete with picnic benches. With six weeks to fill, the summer holidays can be expensive, so we hope our special family ticket prices and summer offers help to ease the strain.

For an evening without the kids, combine a show with a meal in our café bar or partake of one of our new movie-inspired cocktails! We also offer delicious meze boxes that you can take into our screens with your drinks to nibble while you watch.

Fri 11 – Thu 24 Jul

Dir. Clint Eastwood Cast: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen USA 2014, 2hrs 14mins Based on the smash hit Tony Award-winning musical of the same name, Jersey Boys tells the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic group The Four Seasons. Overcoming gambling debts,

Dir. Dean DeBlois Cast: Jay Baruchel (voice), Cate Blanchett (voice) USA 2014, 1hr 42mins Picking up 5 years after the first adventure, we find our hero Hiccup (Baruchel) and his tribe now peacefully co-existing side-by-side with dragons. Although he should be preparing for when he will take over from his father as Chieftain,

Hiccup is much more interested in exploring uncharted skies with his dragon Toothless. Discovering a paradise located in an ice-cave booming with new dragon species and overseen by the mysterious Dragon Rider, Hiccup and Toothless must fight together to maintain the peace. Gorgeously animated (the flight sequences in particular are jaw-dropping and

joyful) and created with love and attention to detail, it manages to surpass the high standard set by the 2010 original to create a film that is both brilliant fun but still packs an emotional wallop.

family disasters and mafia threats, in director Eastwood’s hands it’s a triumphant feel-good story of the men responsible for some of the 60’s biggest hits including 'Sherry', 'Big Girls Don't Cry'

and 'Walk Like a Man' – all instantly recognisable thanks to Frankie Vallie’s trademark falsetto.

Dir. Roman Polanski Cast: Emmanuelle Seigner, France/Poland 2013, 1hr 36mins, subtitled

Dir. Ryan Coogler Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz USA 2013, 1hr 25mins

Dir. Sini Anderson Cast: Kathleen Hanna, Carrie Brownstein USA 2013, 1hr 21mins

Dir. Frank Borzage Cast: Gary Cooper, Helen Hayes USA 1932, 1hr 22mins

Polanski's adaptation of the Broadway hit is a two person chamber drama set over one stormy Parisian night. In a run-down theatre, director Thomas (Amalric) is lamenting his unsuccessful day auditioning for a female lead in his play, only to be interrupted by the entrance of chaotic Vanda (Seigner). Peculiarly going by the same name as the play's protagonist, she convinces the director to let her audition with him reading alongside. As the lines between reality and fiction are blurred, a delectable, mischievous, and kinky cat-and-mouse game plays out.

In Ryan Coogler’s stunning debut, we spend 24 hours with Oscar Grant (Jordan), a 22-year-old shot by police officers on 1st January 2009 as he lay unarmed on a train station platform. Following Oscar in the day leading up to the shooting as he juggles his young family, unemployment, his social life and a possible drug-deal, Fruitvale Station is a gripping look at what it means to be young and black in modern America. Michael B. Jordan is magnetic in the lead role, ably supported by Oscarwinner Octavia Spencer (The Help) as his no-nonsense mother.

Anderson's intimate doc celebrates her long-time friend and feminist icon Kathleen Hanna. The film follows Hanna's career from early anarchist days as the central face of the 90s ‘Riot Grrrl’ punk movement, to her magnetic stage presence as the front woman of bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre up to her sudden retirement in 2005 brought on by illness. Masterfully assembled from interviews with friends and other musicians, plus archive footage of some blistering live performances.

The Sat 5th screening at 3pm will be introduced by a talk on Hemingway’s life and work by Robert W. Jones II from The University of Leicester. An adaptation of the Ernest Hemingway novel based on his experiences during World War I, Gary Cooper stars as Lt. Frederic Henry, an American serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian army. Meeting English nurse Catherine, the two begin a romance but the ongoing war threatens to tear them apart.

Dir. Benedikt Erlingsson Cast: Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, Iceland/Germany 2013, 1hr 21mins, subtitled Erlingsson’s beautiful exploration of the bond between man and horse is set amongst the stark volcanic scenery of Iceland, following an eccentric tight-knit horse riding community. Roughly split into six episodic stories, the film revolves around an ongoing affair between two of the locals Solveig (Bøving) and Kolbeinn (Sigurðsson) whose relationship may be derailed by Kolbeinn’s love for his prize mare Grána! It’s a gleefully-strange film infused with Nordic black humour, and you can practically taste the wild Icelandic air.

'A road movie. On foot.' In this new British comedy, four old school mates set out to complete an epic Coast to Coast walk across Northern England, but the journey swiftly becomes a trip straight into mid-life crises. Films marked

This gorgeous costume drama is based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral (Goode) who is raised by her great-uncle Lord Chief Justice Mansfield and his wife. Afforded certain privileges because of her lineage but never

allowed to be fully equal, Belle falls in love with an idealistic young man and in so doing brings about the struggle to end slavery in England. A moving story, brilliantly acted by a superb cast that includes

the cream of British talent in Tom Wilkinson, Penelope Wilton and Emily Watson.

Dir. Bruno Dumont Cast: Juliette Binoche, Jean-Luc Vincent France 2013, 1hr 35mins, subtitled

Dir. Cédric Klapisch Cast: Romain Duris, Audrey Tatou France/USA/Belgium 2013, 1hr 57mins, subtitled (parts)

Styled like it's straight out of the 1980’s (complete with a brooding John Carpenter-style synth score) this dark, tension-filled thriller stars Michael C. Hall (TV’s Dexter) as Richard, a family man forced to shoot an intruder in his home. With the cops whisking the body away and far too eager for him to move on and keep his mouth shut, Richard must take matters into his own hands when the dead boy’s father (Sam Shepard) comes looking for revenge.

This intense new film from Dumont stars Juliette Binoche as the Camille of the title, a sculptress confined by her family to an asylum in 1915. Waiting for a visit from her brother the poet Paul Claudel who she hopes will expedite her release; Camille struggles to remain detached from the other patients. An acting masterclass from Binoche – with most of the film spent in her company - it makes for an austere and gripping art house drama.

In this new comedy-drama from France, Duris (Populaire) stars as Xavier, a 40-year-old father facing both a divorce and his ex taking their two children to New York. Deciding to move after them Xavier settles in to Chinatown where his positive attitude soon endears him to the locals, but his immigrant status forces him into some tricky situations. This feel-good film deals with the complications of modern life with a light touch and open heart.

Filmed across a 12 year period with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s (Before Midnight) new film is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, the type that comes along every so often to remind you why you love cinema. Mistaken for Strangers 15 Fri 18 – Mon 21 Jul Dir. Tom Berninger Cast: Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner USA 2013, 1hr 15mins Tom, the little brother of indie-rock band The National's frontman Matt Berninger, was invited by his brother to work as a roadie on the band's 2010 world tour. Despite uncerimoniously failing at that job, Tom did manage to shoot (occasionally against others' will) a ‘rockumentary’ of the tour. A painfully honest portrayal of the tensions between a bona fide rock-star and his insecure metalhead brother, Berninger turns humiliation into an art form with this brilliant mixture of humour and pathos.

Spivet is a child prodigy with a passion for cartography and all things scientific. When the prestigious Smithsonian Institute invites him to collect the equally prestigious Baird award for inventing the perpetual motion machine, he leaves his beetle-obsessed mom and cowboy dad to embark on an adventure-filled journey to D.C.!
