Things tend to get a bit quieter at Phoenix as we approach summer. But with films like The Great Gatsby, Mud and Populaire, we’ve been considerably busier than last year! A lot depends upon the quality of new films, but in general we’re confident more people are now discovering Phoenix, liking what they find and telling their friends. The more people we get in, the easier it is to develop new partnerships and sources of income – with both public sector and commercial organisations. This means we can invest in new projects and services to achieve our charitable aims – using film and art to inspire people, and improve the quality of their lives. This month, for example, we’re working with the University of Leicester and Cuttlefish on an exciting new project to build an exhibition and smartphone ‘app’ which celebrate our customers’ memories of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter (p14). We’ve also introduced our new Access Cinema Programme, a commitment to provide screenings for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing; blind or partially sighted; have learning disabilities; or are on the Autistic/Asperger’s spectrum (p15). With your continued support, we look forward to doing much more – including playing a key role developing Leicester’s City of Culture bid for 2017!

Fri 28 Jun - Thu 4 Jul Dir: Claude Miller Cast: Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche France 2012, 1hr 50mins, subtitled After a run of frothy romantic comedies, Amelie star Audrey Tautou turns to drama delivering a restrained, heartbreaking performance in this superior French film set in the late 1920s.

Dir: J. J. Abrams Cast: Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch USA 2013, 2hrs 12mins 35mm film is on the way out this year, but we think it’s still the best way to watch blockbusters. This riproaring sequel to the 2009 reboot finds our heroes Captain Kirk and Spock called into action after an attack on Starfleet headquarters. Voyaging to the Klingon home world, the Enterprise crew must battle a terrifying new enemy (a wonderful scenery-chewing performance from Benedict Cumberbatch) and confront the dark secrets of Starfleet itself.

Byzantium 15 Mon 1 - Thu 4 Jul Dir: Neil Jordan Cast: Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan UK / Ireland 2012, 1hr 58mins Finally a Vampire film with a bit of bite! Renoir 12A Fri 5 - Thu 11 Jul Dir: Gilles Bourdos Cast: Michel Bouquet, Christa Theret France 2012, 1hr 51mins, subtitled Gorgeously shot, superbly performed and achingly French, Bourdos’ film is an affectionate portrait of the early years of one of cinema’s greatest directors, Jean Renoir. The son of the impressionist painter Pierre-August, Jean returns home to his father’s estate having been wounded in World War I.

Desperate to return to the front and the comrades he left behind, Jean meets his father’s beautiful muse Andrée who gives him a glimpse of life away from warfare.

Dir: Olivier Assayas Cast: Clement Metayer, Lola Creton France 2012, 2hrs 2mins, subtitled

After the sell-out screening in May this superb documentary from Shane Meadows (This is England) returns for a four day run. Following the Manchester band's resurrection in 2012 – where they played a string of concerts worldwide to the joy of their ardent fan base – this is a personal and passionate film. The rehearsal scenes are magic: four blokes in a small room making incredible music.

A semi-autobiographical film from Assayas (Carlos the Jackal) set in the aftermath of the May 1968 Parisian riots. Young activist Gilles takes part in demonstrations and attacks ‘fascist’ security guards, but is increasingly frustrated by a mellowing generation more interested in furthering their careers as artists and filmmakers than in continuing the revolutionary spirit of ‘68. A fascinating and timely film considering recent events in Turkey.

To make this astonishing film, director Oppenheimer challenged former Indonesian death squad leaders to re-enact their real-life mass killings, carried out during 1965-1966 when an estimated 500,000 people were slaughtered. Recreated in some of the men’s favourite genres including musicals and Hollywood westerns, the results are eye-opening and overwhelmingly moving. On seeing the film Werner Herzog said, ‘I have not seen a film as powerful, surreal, and frightening in at least a decade’.

Before Midnight 15 Fri 12 - Thu 18 Jul Dir: Richard Linklater Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy USA 2013, 1hr 49mins The final part of Linklater’s ‘Before’ trilogy (we have a Sunrise and Sunset double bill on Sun 7th) is another superbly written film about relationships, getting older and the timeless arguments between men and women. Hawke and Delpy reprise their roles as Jesse and Celine – almost two decades since they first met, we find the couple

holidaying in Greece where Jesse’s desire to see more of his son in America puts a strain on their relationship. Movie heaven.

Dir: Andrea Segre Cast: Tao Zhao, Rade Serbedzija Italy / France 2011, 1hr 38mins, subtitled A delicate and exquisitely shot Franco/Italian co-production set on the sleepy banks of the Veneto lagoon. A shy Chinese barmaid strikes up a friendship with another immigrant – older Yugoslavian fisherman and poet Bepi – to the dismay of local residents. Avoiding histrionics in favour of believable characters with universal pains and frustrations, this is a tender, quietly moving film made with care and attention.

Fri 19 - Thu 25 Jul

There may be blockbuster movies all over the multiplexes this month, but this is our tip for the must-see film of July! A sumptuous black & white, silent adaptation of the Snow White fairy tale transported to 1920s Seville and centred around a female bullfighter; Blancanieves has already picked up over thirty awards around the world and it’s easy to see why. Made with a clear love for silent cinema, fans of The Artist will surely fall for this gorgeous film too.

Like Someone in Love 12A Fri 19 - Mon 22 Jul Dir: Abbas Kiarostami Cast: Tadashi Okuno France / Japan 2012, 1hr 50mins, subtitled This gorgeous new film from Iranian master Kiarostami (Certified Copy) is a superbly acted account of an unconventional love-triangle. Akiko, a young escort in Tokyo, strikes up an unlikely friendship with an older widower. When Akiko’s jealous boyfriend grows suspicious the kindly widower poses as Akiko’s grandfather, but their pretence can only last for so long. Beautifully shot with a dusky jazz soundtrack.

But all is not well in the

sleepy town and the friends soon find themselves battling an alien invasion. It’s inventive, exciting and uproariously funny.

Mon 22 - Thu 25 Jul Dir: Julian Roman Polsler Cast: Martina Gedeck Austria / Germany 2012, 1hr 48mins, subtitled Beguiling audiences in Germany, this award-winning film finally gets a UK release. A woman living in rural Austria finds herself inexplicably cut off from the rest of the world when an invisible and unyielding wall surrounds her land. With only her loyal dog for company, she’s trapped within this microcosm ruled increasingly by the laws of nature. A beautifully shot and stirring tale of the resilience of the human spirit.

Forty years ago, Bruce Springsteen burst onto the rock scene and changed it forever. With over 120 million albums sold worldwide and numerous awards, his music defines a generation. This feelgood documentary is brimming with life – combining interviews from fans about what his music means to them, with never before seen archive footage of Bruce’s performances. After the film there’s an additional 15 minutes of his current concert tour filmed exclusively for alternative content audiences in cinemas.

The 6.30pm show on Mon 29th July will be introduced by Dr Kaitlynn Mendes, Senior Lecturer in Journalism at DMU. Offering an insight into the women's lib movement during the 70s, this intelligent and thoroughly entertaining documentary is based around the 'Battle of the Sexes' tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

Set during the English Civil War, this audacious new film from Ben Wheatley (Sightseers, Kill List) follows a band of deserters who flee a battle only to be captured by an alchemist. Bewitched and forced to dig for buried treasure in a field surrounded by a ring of mushrooms, the men soon succumb to paranoia and cataclysmic visions.

Share your memories of Leicester’s industrial past Help us create a new exhibition and smartphone app Now transformed into the Cultural Quarter, the St. George’s area of Leicester – where Phoenix is based – was once a hive of industry, dominated by factories and warehouses. By the 1960s, in the face of growing foreign competition, changing fashions and domestic policy, this industry began to decline. Old family firms were bought-out, relocated or declined until by the late 1990s much of the area was unused. Phoenix is involved in a project with the University of Leicester and Cuttlefish to collect and exhibit memories from people who experienced the area in its industrial heyday. Did you work in a hosiery factory like Charnwood or Rowley’s, or know someone who did? Or a footwear firm like Faire Brothers or Squirells? We’re also keen to hear about the reuse of these industrial buildings as ‘underground’ music and arts venues during the period of decline. Perhaps you were an 80s new romantic in Helsinki, or a 90s raver in the infamous Dielectric?

Your memories of Phoenix Phoenix is also looking to explore its own history, which dates back to the building of our former Newark Street home in the 1960s. If you’ve got any old brochures, posters or other memorabilia relating to Phoenix over its 50 year history we’d love to hear from you. We’d like to exhibit them in our cafebar. Please write to us, email chris.tyrer@phoenix.org.uk or talk to a member of staff at the box office for more details.

New screenings for the disabled

29 Jun - 20 Jul Cube gallery

We’re delighted to be able to offer a series of film screenings for people with physical and learning disabilities. Developed with local charities, our new ‘Access Cinema’ programme will include dedicated screenings in specially-tailored environments for the following people:

Digital Kite Flying is an interactive artwork that whisks you away to the rooftops of the Indian city of Udaipur. Using body tracking sensors that respond to your hand movements, you can fly digital kites high above the city from within Phoenix’s Cube gallery. Great fun for all ages!

Calling all filmmakers! The Short Cinema film festival is now open for submissions Deadline: midnight, Sat 10 Aug

You can also design your own kites that will become part of the artwork. Either visit the exhibition at Phoenix or create your own digital kite design online at digitalkites.indiansummer.org.uk. All the saved kite designs will be ready and available to fly as part of the installation. Digital Kite Flying draws on the rich history of the kite and its relationship with Indian culture. It has been commissioned by Phoenix in partnership with An Indian Summer for this year’s Indian Summer Festival.

Leicester’s premier short film festival will return to Phoenix on Wed 28 Aug for another evening showcasing the very best in short film from the Midlands. Presenting an eclectic mix of genres and styles, The Short Cinema celebrates new, developing and established film-makers from the region. If you’d like to submit a short film (up to 15 minutes) for consideration, submission guidelines and an entry form are available on the Phoenix website under ‘Events / Festivals’.
