WELCOME Ah January… time to take stock and plan for the year ahead, after the excesses of the festive season. With New Year‘s resolutions still being made (and broken!) now’s the time to try something different, and Phoenix is the perfect place to do it. We’ve got loads of fantastic short courses, which are a great way to get more out of film, learn new skills and meet people. With 90 minute ’tasters’ through to 8-week intensive courses, there’s plenty to choose from (p5).

GET MORE OUT OF PHOENIX WITH MEMBERSHIP & LOYALTY

Our new exhibition is The Canvas of Resonance (p4), a dramatic sound and visual installation inspired by the Foley artists who created sound effects in the early days of cinema, TV and radio. The Cube Gallery will resonate with the sound of thunder from 19 Jan. We’ve now entered the ‘awards corridor’, leading up to the BAFTAs and Oscars at the end of February. The rumour-mill’s hotly tipped Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl (p6); The Revenant’s Leonardo DiCaprio is a strong contender (p10); and Jennifer Lawrence is outstanding in Joy (p7). We’re also bringing back Suffragette, The Lady in the Van, Brooklyn and Carol – all huge successes in late 2015, so if you missed them the first time round now’s your chance. After the frantic activity of Christmas, have a relaxing weekend and bring your little (and not so little) ones down to Phoenix for a family film (p15). We’ve got great kids’ movies every weekend, including our regular Reel India screening if you fancy trying something new.

THE CANVAS OF RESONANCE Tue 19 Jan – Sat 20 Feb Cube Gallery, Free

Available as Silver Screenings – see p13

The Canvas of Resonance is a sound and visual installation by Kenny Wong Chi-Chuen, inspired by the Foley artists who produced sound effects for cinema, TV and radio in the predigital age. In the early days of live radio, Foley artists invented a novel way to create the sound of thunder: their method of rattling a large piece of thin copper sheeting suspended by wires was so effective that it became a mainstay of the industry for decades, and is still what many people associate with a Foley artist’s work. The Canvas of Resonance re-examines this longstanding audio effect, creating complex, atmospheric sound compositions by manipulating the surface of a series of metal sheets suspended in the gallery space. The resulting installation – accompanied by flickering lights highlighting the surface of the metal – is a dramatic, immersive experience.

THE CANVAS OF RESONANCE ARTIST’S TALK & EXHIBITION LAUNCH Tue 19 Jan, from 6pm Hong Kong-based artist Kenny Wong Chi-Chuen will introduce his exhibition The Canvas of Resonance and discuss his practice, which includes work as an artist, designer and mechanical engineer. The talk will be followed by a short Q&A and a launch party for the exhibition in the Café Bar, with refreshments and a DJ set from Phoenix’s Alan Morton.

SMARTPHONE DARKROOM WITH LEICESTER LO-FI Sat 23 Jan, 12pm – 4pm Café Bar, Free Inspired by Kenny Wong’s blending of technologies old and new, you can combine digital and analogue photography in this free drop-in workshop. Use your smartphone to print images directly onto light sensitive photographic paper and develop the prints with traditional darkroom chemicals. Drop-in, no need to book. Suitable for children and adults alike.

- Beautiful, humane and moving’ - The Telegraph. After his triumph last year in The Theory of Everything, Eddie Redmayne may be in line for another Oscar with his stunning turn in this remarkable love story, inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Originally known as Einar, Lili Elbe (Redmayne) was one of the first people to undergo sex reassignment surgery in the early 20th century. Directed by

Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables) with a cast that includes Alicia Vikander as Lili’s wife Gerda, Matthias Schoenaerts and Ben Whishaw, The Danish Girl is captivating and beautifully made.

One of our most popular films from last year returns due to demand. 1950s Ireland and young Eilis is leaving for America. Sponsored by a priest in Brooklyn, Eilis finds a job and lodgings with the no nonsense Mrs. Kehoe (Julie Walters). After initial homesickness, Eilis falls in love with her new life, but a tragedy back home means she must return to Ireland. Torn between two countries, she must decide where her heart lies.

After witnessing an act of protest vandalism in the street, laundry factory worker Maud Watts (Mulligan) finds herself drawn to the local suffragettes. Deciding to join the fight, Maud and her fellow campaigners face opposition and persecution from an increasingly brutal state.
