WELCOME For many people February brings to mind the red roses synonymous with Valentine’s day, but here at Phoenix we love the red carpets that’ll be rolled out soon for the BAFTAs and Oscars.

GET MORE OUT OF PHOENIX WITH MEMBERSHIP & LOYALTY

This month we’re screening yet more potential award winners. The Big Short starring Steve Carell is nominated for Best Film, along with Spotlight, Room and Brooklyn, which is returning to Phoenix due to overwhelming demand (p4-5). The Revenant (screened here in January) is out in front with 12 Oscar nominations; could this be the year Leonardo DiCaprio finally wins a golden statuette, or will he lose out to Eddie Redmayne who’s back on our screens in The Danish Girl for DMU Pride (p7)?

Loyalty card Free

We’d love to know who you think the big winners will be at this year’s awards. Share your views with us in our Oscars Poll – coming online in February – or join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. Of course, if all this talk of the Oscars is getting too much, we’ve got plenty of other things for you to look forward to. We’ve a selection of Hollywood classics, including the glorious An American in Paris (p10), plus a season of Japanese films (p10). There’s also Comedy in the Dark (p7), and plenty of family fun for halfterm (p13).

Member card £40

Our latest exhibition, The Canvas of Resonance, continues in the Cube Gallery until Sat 20 Feb – turn to p14 for this month’s art programme. And if you fancy learning something new, sign up for one of our short courses (p15); there’s plenty to choose from. Love film? Love art? Love learning? Love Phoenix.

The Big Short has a fine cast that includes Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Christian

Bale and Ryan Gosling, and succeeds in being both informative and very, very funny.

CINEMA BIZARRE The weird and wonderful

YAKUZA APOCALYPSE

18

Fri 5 Feb, 9.15pm Dir: Takashi Miike Cast: Yayan Ruhian Japan, 2015, 1hr 55mins, subtitled In the ruthless underground world of the Yakuza, legendary boss Kamiura is rumoured to be invincible, but the truth is he’s a vampire! Given an ultimatum that he must return to the international syndicate he left years ago, Kamiura’s refusal sets in motion a series of increasingly bizarre and violent events. As you’d expect from Miike (13 Assassins, Gozu) Yakuza Apocalypse is bonkers, blood-filled and glorious fun.

CREED

12A

Fri 12 – Tue 16 Feb Dir: Ryan Coogler Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone USA 2015, 2 hrs 13mins Safe to say no-one had high hopes when another film in the Rocky franchise was announced, so it’s a welcome surprise that Creed exceeds all expectations. Michael. B Jordan (Fruitvale Station) stars as the son of Rocky’s late friend and former rival Apollo Creed, who asks Rocky to help train him to follow in his father’s footsteps. Now in the mix for the Oscars, Creed is a thrilling, crowd-pleasing movie about fathers and sons, fighting and redemption.

Fri 12 – Thu 18 Feb Dir: Paolo Sorrentino Cast: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel Italy/France 2015, 2hrs 4mins, subtitled (parts)

Fri 12 – Thu 25 Feb Dir: Oliver Parker Cast: Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones UK 2016, TBC

Retired orchestra conductor Fred Ballinger (Caine) is on holiday at an Alpine resort with his daughter and best friend Mick (Keitel), a film director. Mick is working on a new movie, but Fred is determined to stay retired despite an invitation from the Queen to perform for Prince Philip's birthday! A funny but down to earth film about fading memories and twilight years, with a great supporting cast that includes Jane Fonda and Rachel Weisz.

Returning to the town of Walmington-on-Sea in 1944 we rejoin the Home Guard, led by the hapless Captain Mainwaring (Jones) and his long-suffering second-in-command Sergeant Wilson (Nighy). With WWII reaching its climax and the allies preparing to invade Germany, Mainwaring’s troop are tasked with sniffing out an undercover German spy whilst dealing with the scrutiny of glamorous female journalist Rose

Winters (Zeta-Jones). Stuffed full of national treasures – like Michael Gambon, Mark Gatiss, Bill Nighy and Toby Jones – and filled with laugh-out-load moments, this new take on the beloved television series is a delight.

Oscar Nominated

The seventh annual Visible Bits, Audible Bytes brings stunning, genre-breaking works of audiovisual art to Phoenix. Stimulate the eye and the ear with contemporary fusions of new and old technologies, from computeranimated tessellation patterns driven by music, to hand-painted films complementing digital soundscapes. The screening presents new work from around the globe, including China, Canada, Holland, Israel and the USA. Presented by the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre at De Montfort University. Image Credit: Raven Kwok, from ‘Skyline’

THE CANVAS OF RESONANCE Tue 19 Jan – Sat 20 Feb Cube Gallery, Free The Canvas of Resonance is a sound and visual installation by Kenny Wong Chi-Chuen, inspired by the Foley artists who produced sound effects for cinema, TV and radio in the predigital age. In the early days of live radio, Foley artists invented a novel way to create the sound of thunder: their method of rattling a large piece of thin copper

sheeting suspended by wires was so effective that it became a mainstay of the industry for decades, and is still what many people associate with a Foley artist’s work. The Canvas of Resonance re-examines this longstanding audio effect, creating complex, atmospheric sound compositions by manipulating the surface of a series of metal sheets suspended in the gallery space. The resulting installation – accompanied by flickering lights highlighting the surface of the metal – is a dramatic, immersive experience.
