COMING IN MAY

FORCE MAJEURE

Ah, spring – there’s nothing quite as invigorating as a fresh April day, but when those showers strike take comfort in the knowledge there’s always something on at Phoenix! We’d love you to get involved this month by filling in our annual customer survey – your feedback helps us develop our programme and services, and gives you the chance to shape Phoenix’s future as we plan for the next five years. You can complete the survey on our website, or fill in a paper copy if you’re in the building. This month, we’ve teamed up for a second time with DMU’s film studies students to put together a short festival of films – this year on the theme of ‘rebellion’. We’re delighted with the films they’ve programmed with us – classics including Easy Rider, The Breakfast Club and The Big Lebowski. You can enjoy unprecedented access to Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum without leaving Leicester, with Exhibition on Screen. Experience these masterpieces for the first time on the big screen – marking the 125th anniversary of that artist’s death. Work from two local artists supported by our Phoenix Interact Labs bursary scheme will be on display in our gallery from 10 April: The Fading Afterglow of Creation explores how fact, fiction and technology influence how we see ourselves. And finally, if you’ve got the kids this Easter, they’re sure to love Dreamworks’ latest cuddly creations ‘the Boov’ in Home. Or catch family favourites SpongBob and Shaun the Sheep later in the month.

Phoenix is a registered charity. Our aim is to bring inspirational film and art to all. Made possible with the support of:

TBC

Mon 27 – Thu 30 Apr Dir: Afia Nathaniel Cast: Samiya Mumtaz, Mohib Mirza Pakistan 2014, Time TBC, subs

The title of this black comedy (Argentina’s foreign Oscar entry) perfectly sums up the stories covered in this hilarious and wonderfully dark anthology film packed with tales of violence and vengeance. Including a spurned bride, a yuppy who insults the wrong truck driver, and a man who takes drastic measures against a parking fine; these six outrageous shorts – linked by the theme of revenge – are deliciously enjoyable.

THE FADING AFTERGLOW OF CREATION — AN EXHIBITION OF THINGS FROM AN IMAGINED FUTURE 10 Apr – 8 May Cube Gallery, Free The Fading Afterglow of Creation brings together the work of Leicester-based artists Dave Briggs and Jack Squires, exploring the ways fact and fiction combine to shape how we see ourselves in an increasingly technology-driven world. The exhibition presents a collection of inventions inspired by obsolete visions of the future,

along with unearthed artefacts from a long-dead race who fell victim to their over reliance on machines. Both artists are taking part in our Phoenix Interact Labs bursary scheme, designed to help artists use creative technology in their work. Find out more at phoenix.org.uk/get-involved and interactlabs.co.uk.

OPEN LABS

Tue 28 Apr, 7pm Phoenix Interact Labs, Free Led by the artists, this event is a chance to find out more about the work being made as part of our bursary scheme, including The Fading Afterglow of Creation.
