Dir: Brian Percival Cast: Geoffrey Rush, Sophie Nélisse USA / Germany 2013, 2hrs 11mins, subtitled (parts)

Dir: Richard Ayoade Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska UK 2014, 1hr 33mins

A tender and moving adaptation of Markus Zuzak’s internationally best-selling novel, The Book Thief follows Liesel, a German refugee girl who arrives at her new home just before the start of WWII. Attending the local school and making friends, Liesel’s life is

changed forever when her foster parents shelter Max, a Jewish man, in their basement. Stealing books for him from the library, Liesel and Max’s friendship is threatened by the ever watchful Nazi Party and encroaching war.

Richard Ayoade’s (Submarine) new film, based on the novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Simon James is a lowly office clerk in an unnamed government department. Ignored by his co-workers and left to daydream about his colleague Hannah, Simon’s life takes a further turn for the worse when his exact double starts work in

the same office. Confident and ambitious, Simon’s doppelganger ‘James Simon’ is everything he wants to be but isn’t. Offbeat, endlessly imaginative and shot through with Ayoade’s trademark sardonic humour.

Hollywood has always plundered Japanese cinema for remakes, so it’s good to see the roles reversed. Clint Eastwood’s 1992 film is transported from the Wild West to the serene beauty of late 19th century Japan. Jubee (Watanabe), a former merciless Samurai now poor farmer, is approached by an old friend with one last job – to track down a gang of outlaws with a bounty on their head. Gorgeously shot on the plains of Hokkaido, themes of honour, pride and self sacrifice run deep.

The new film from Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) stars Scarlett Johansson as Laura, a predatory extraterrestrial experiencing life on earth in a human body. Travelling through Scotland and picking off lonely men who won’t be missed, Laura’s other-worldly femme fatale wants to experience the breadth of human behaviour from desire to death. With minimal dialogue, it’s a mind-blowing visual experience that preys on the mind for days afterwards and is destined for cult classic status.

Vampires Adam and Eve have been lovers for several hundred lifetimes and are growing sick of the modern world. Adam lives a reclusive rock star existence on the verge of suicide whilst Eve is in Tangiers with her blood supplier Marlowe (John Hurt). Sensing Adam’s depression Eve returns to save him, but is followed by her blood-hungry younger sister Ava who threatens to tear their relationship apart. A gorgeouslyshot, melancholy look at the effects of immortality on the soul.

Based on Nick Hornby’s (About a Boy) bittersweet novel, A Long Way Down follows four strangers who meet on top of a high-rise building in London on New Year's Eve, each with the intention of committing suicide. Deciding it can’t just be coincidence, the four form an ‘anti-suicide pact’. Finding comedy in the darkest places, it’s a film filled with warmth bolstered by a great cast including Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul.

(Introduced by Rob Foxon) Sun 6 Apr, 2.30pm Tickets: £6.50

Described as a British version of hard-hitting prison drama A Prophet, English actor Jack O’Connell delivers a ferocious performance as Eric, a young offender ‘starred up’ to a grown-up institution. Watched over by his incarcerated father Neville (a terrific Ben Mendelsohn, Animal Kingdom), Eric is given a violent introduction to the brutal world of prison life before mandatory anger-management therapy offers a slim chance of redemption. It’s riveting, powerful stuff that could make O’Connell a star.

A new event at Phoenix, as film historian Rob Foxon presents a programme of rare archive films showing aspects of our aviation heritage. In this introductory screening, Rob re-discovers some long forgotten historical footage featuring both civil and military aircraft including the RAF Flying Display at Hendon in 1929, the Imperial Airways Silver Wing service from Croydon to Paris in 1933, and the work of London's airports in 1950 with visits to both Heathrow and Northolt.

Dir: Ritesh Batra Cast: Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur India/France 2013, 1hr 45mins

Dir: John Michael McDonagh Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd Ireland/UK 2014, 1hr 41mins

A new multi award-winning film from India. Trying to reignite some passion with her husband, young housewife Ila cooks him a special lunch. Handed over to a ‘dabbawallah’ – part of the huge system in Mumbai that delivers food to workers in the city – a mix-up sees the meal delivered to the desk of widowed clerk Saajan. Sending a note back in appreciation, the two

lonely people start swapping letters and life stories through the lunchbox. Batra weaves an enchanting tale of love and longing both funny and life-affirming. If you can get through Irrfan’s performance without shedding a tear, you’re made of sterner stuff than us!

The new film from the writer and director of 2011’s The Guard is a masterful sophomore effort. Gleeson plays Father James Lavelle, a village priest told in the confession booth he is going to be killed in seven days. The unseen would-be murderer is hell-bent on revenge for past crimes committed by the church and has chosen James as a

symbol to be destroyed. With a week to figure out which member of his flock wants him dead it becomes a whodunit of sorts, full of gallows humour but packing a wallop of emotional power. A performer of rare brilliance, Gleeson’s hang-dog expression and soulful eyes hint at the hidden depths of this parish priest.

Dir: Jehane Noujaim Cast: Khalid Abdalla, Dina Abdullah Egypt/USA 2013, 1hr 48mins

Dir: Asghar Farhadi Cast: Tahar Rahim, Bérénice Bejo France/Italy 2013, 2hrs 10mins

Dir: Terry Gilliam Cast: Christoph Waltz, Mélanie Thierry USA/Romania 2013, 1hr 46mins

Dir: Woody Allen Cast: Cate Blanchett USA 2013, 1hr 36mins

Dir: Benjamin Heisenberg Cast: Andreas Lust Germany/Austria 2010, 1hr 41mins

Dir: Biyi Bandele Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton Nigeria/UK 2013, 1hr 51mins

Egyptian-American Noujaim's Oscar-nominated documentary follows six young protestors during the Egyptian Revolution who rely on the technologies of the digital age to get their voices heard and fight a 30-year dictatorship. Using interviews and footage from the protest front-line, this doc shines a light on the personal side of the story not portrayed in the mainstream media, and records what a nation united by a political cause can achieve. Instilled with revolutionary spirit, The Square is an inspiring and emotional journey.

From the director of the Oscarwinning A Separation comes another critically-acclaimed drama. Ahmad returns to Paris after his wife Marie (Bejo, The Artist) requests a divorce, only to find himself in the midst of her new relationship with Samir (Rahim, A Prophet). Much like A Separation, the film's strength lies in its refusal to paint in simple black and white; exploring instead complicated relationships brought to life by intelligent, natural performances. How it hasn’t been nominated for every award going is beyond us.

Back by popular demand, Woody Allen’s comedy-drama has garnered Cate Blanchett every award going, and broken records for indie film at the box-office. Blanchett stars as Jasmine, an emotionally unstable New York socialite who flees to San Francisco and crashes her sister Ginger’s humble lifestyle. With her elitist attitude and acid tongue rubbing Ginger’s family up the wrong way, Jasmine sees a chance to continue her high-life when she meets diplomat Dwight. Woody on this form is irresistible.

An award-winning German film based on the incredible true story of Johann Rettenberger, an Austrian champion marathon runner and bank robber, who used his athletic endurance to evade capture. Beginning in 1985, when he is released on parole after serving a seven year prison sentence for his first bungled robbery, Johann immediately picks up his old hobby and robs a string of banks. Packed with thrilling chase sequences, the tension mounts as the police close in, but Johann knows he can’t run forever.

Bandele's stirring debut is adapted from the bestselling criticallyacclaimed novel of the same name. The story follows two privileged twin sisters Olanna and Kainene who return home from studying in England determined to forge successful futures, but find their lives and loves embroiled in the violence of the Nigerian Civil War. Featuring a first-class cast including BAFTA winners Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Thandie Newton (Crash), it’s a fascinating story of ordinary people struggling with their everyday dramas during a national crisis.

Terry Gilliam's latest film is set in a dystopian steampunk-style future, and is the last instalment in his satiric trilogy (the other two being Brazil and Twelve Monkeys). Computer genius Qohen Leth (Waltz) is on a mission to crack the ‘Zero Theorem’ – a formula that claims all human existence is meaningless, whilst also waiting for a phone call that will explain the meaning of life. Incredible visuals bombard the senses as Gilliam presents a bizarre, rainbow‑coloured futuristic milieu.

CINEMA BIZARRE The weird and wonderful

The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears 18

To mark the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare, we present a small season of some of the best – and some of the most rarely seen – adaptations of his work.

One of Kurosawa’s rarely seen Shakespeare adaptations, The Bad Sleep Well is loosely based on Hamlet and stars Toshiro Mifune as Kôichi Nish, a mild-mannered clerk who marries the daughter of a wealthy businessman. But Kôichi is secretly plotting revenge and has married into the industrialist’s family in order to destroy the organisation he blames for his father’s suicide.

Fri 25 – Sun 27 Apr Dir: Hélène Cattet, Bruno Forzani Cast: Klaus Tange, Ursula Bedena Belgium/France/Luxembourg 2013, 1hr 42mins Blood, shattered glass, leather gloves: Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani (Amer) pay homage once again to the Italian giallo with their latest visual and auditory attack on the senses. Dan returns home to discover his Art Noveau house in Brussels locked from the inside and his wife nowhere to be found. A hyper-stylised story ensues full of disappearances, surreal detours and battles between dreams and reality. Expect to be worn out by this mind-bending thriller!

ESSENTIAL CINEMA Must-see masterpieces

Much Ado About Nothing 12A Thu 10 Apr, 6.15pm Dir: Joss Whedon Cast: Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion USA 2012, 1hr 48mins A gorgeous, bluesy, black and white adaptation of one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies which marked a big change of pace for Joss Whedon after his blockbuster success with The Avengers. This tale of bickering couples and comical misunderstandings is a joy from start to finish.

Sat 19 Apr, 3.15pm Dir: Laurence Olivier Cast: Laurence Olivier, Robert Newton UK 1944, 2hrs 14mins Reportedly one of Stanley Kubrick’s favourite films, Olivier’s film begins in the Globe Theatre before gradually breaking out into a gorgeous Technicolor rendering of Shakespeare’s historical play. Intended as a morale booster for a Britain embroiled in WWII, it garnered Olivier an honorary Academy Award.

PG

Sun 27 Apr, 1.30pm Robert Wise / Stanley Donen USA 1962, 2hrs 32mins / USA 1952, 1hr 38mins Running Time: Approx 4hrs 30mins (including 20min intermission) Single tickets also available To round off our season we present one of the best Shakespeare adaptations, alongside our favourite (non-Shakespearean) musical Singin’ in the Rain. Wise’s musical transplants Romeo and Juliet from Verona to the Upper West Side of New York City, where the star-crossed lovers find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war. Jerome Robbins’ incredible choreography and Leonard Bernstein’s gorgeous score combine for old fashioned movie magic. We follow with Donen’s feel-good musical about the coming of sound to Hollywood. Following silent film star Don Lockwood as he tries to adapt to the new ‘talking’ pictures, it’s an absolute masterpiece full of timeless songs and dance numbers.
