The Place to Be - September / October 2022

Page 1

Greetings, Fellow Members:

For starters, it’s hard not to notice that the fitness center and the fitness class training rooms leveled up this summer. New flooring and new equipment were installed, and the facilities look fresh and fabulous. It was a long overdue replacement cycle for us, and we hope it exceeded your expectations of what our fitness center could become. Additionally, more fitness classes will be offered this season, leveraging the increased capacity our new, upstairs fitness studios contribute to the club.

Not as glamorous as the fitness center upgrades, but critically important none-the-less, was the replacement of our golf course irrigation pumps in July. The feedback from Kenton and his team is that the new system’s effectiveness is substantial and will generate consequential long-term benefits for current and future course conditions. We are experiencing considerable improvements in sprinkler coverage and water pressure that we severely lacked from our old, end-of-lifecycle system. The new state-of-the-art system is built to last, putting to rest for years, if not decades, the outages and pressure problems that troubled us greatly.

The transformation of our poolside fitness studio into the new Firebirds’ Room was also completed. Going forward, this room will serve as the headquarters and staging area of our recently instituted Firebirds Youth Program. Additionally, we welcomed Devin Derr to the team in July. Devin will serve as the club’s Youth Activities Coordinator and comes to us after nearly six years of relevant experience as a Youth Host with Disney Cruise Line. Similarly, our Kids Care facility upgrade project was completed this summer and is ready to serve our families’ childcare needs while utilizing our club.

PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB RONALD J. CASTRO JR. PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT RJC9999@ME.COM

Welcome back to the Valley and your club! While you were out of town, we’ve been working on several projects to increase the Club’s value proposition to our members. Some of our projects were borne out of necessity, while others were fostered from your survey and focus group feedback. Thank you to everyone who played a role in the completion of our summer projects and to all of you involved in the long-term planning for our upcoming projects.

@PHXCOUNTRYCLUB #PCC1899 #PHOENIXCC

There is more work to be done and your feedback on prospective ideas will be important to our process. Invitations to focus groups will be forthcoming. But in the meantime, please remember that the committee has its own email address for you to provide feedback regarding anything about our club, not just future projects. Please email mec@phoenixcountryclub.com with your suggestions on ways to increase the value of our membership experience. Additionally, some other things to look forward to this season include: (i) new golf carts with GPS and geofencing capabilities, (ii) the introduction of Wednesday night dining, the debut of our Saturday Night Live dining series, and a new dining menu, (iii) an upgraded social event calendar with all the season’s events scheduled out until next summer, and (iv) the return of the Schwab Cup tournament in November. Enjoy all the amenities and events that the club has to offer this season.

PHOENIX CC PRESIDENT

The upgrade momentum will extend into the new season. Our Membership Experience Committee is exploring and imagining new opportunities to level up our club’s curb appeal while also addressing safety & security needs for membership and staff alike. The committee is also working on ideas to increase the appeal and functionality of the clubhouse’s dining areas for our current and future needs.

RonCheers,Castro

Lastly, I’d like to leave you with a final thought. Over a long period of time, it’s easy to become immune to the defects and deferred maintenance of our own homes, until the day our reproachful in-laws stop by for a visit and bluntly remind us of what’s not been done. The same indifference can happen the longer our membership incumbency becomes. We can equivalently become anesthetized to our club’s areas of opportunity until one of our invited guests points out our shortcomings. We all love the final segment of those popular residential remodel shows where the designer reveals the manifestation of their ideas to the owner of a tired and outdated property. We just experienced a similar “WOW” moment when the fitness center upgrades were revealed. That same moment for the rest of the clubhouse is in arrears for us as members. We need everyone’s feedback and ideas for our future projects to be successful and to increase the value of our membership experience.

GRAND OPENING FITNESS

DBUDZIUS@PHOENIXCOUNTRYCLUB.COM

As many of you have already experienced our “state of the art” Fitness Club, we realize there will be many new faces that will need to be introduced to all the new equipment when they come back to the Club. CONGRATULATIONS

@PHXCOUNTRYCLUB #PCC1899 #PHOENIXCC

Both the Firebird Room and the Firebird Nest have neared completion. I believe the next generation of our youngsters at Phoenix CC will be in great hands as we begin the season. Devin Derr, our Youth Activities Coordinator, has a terrific slate of activities in store that are new and exciting. We hope to keep your children entertained as you enjoy all areas of the Club. Again, one of the key strategic goals of the Firebird program is to ready your kids to frequent the Club on their own.

Dear Member, I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready for cooler weather and a fun year ahead. The hot and humid monsoon season, along with Kenton’s hard work, have the golf course rounding into great shape for the months ahead. In September, we look forward to hosting our annual Summer Sidewinder Member Guest. This always proves to be a fun event. I have added the calendar of Men’s and Mixed events below, along with sign up-dates. As most of you know, we encourage you to use the Foretees app when registering for tournaments. If you have any issues or aren’t comfortable with the app then please stop in the shop and we will show you how to best use this technology for the upcoming season. We will close the course on October 3rd for our annual overseeding process and will reopen with a member-only shotgun on October 28th. Here is a schedule of events for the 10 days we are back prior to the Schwab Cup.

Dear Member, I hope that you and your family have had a wonderful summer. Our Agronomy team did such a fantastic job over the last few months during the transition, and we are thankful to be heading into the cooler months. Overseed is scheduled to begin October 3rd and the golf course reopens on October 28th. As we progress closer to overseed, I would like to highlight a few talking points that are important for all members to know. How much seed do we use? On average, we use around 60,000 pounds of ryegrass seed (pictured left) on about 90 acres. We apply the seed using a rotary spreader called a Lely with an application goal of 650 pounds per acre (pictured right).

How much water do we use? Water is our most precious resource, and the pump station is the beating heart of a golf course, especially in the desert. The water used on the golf course is sourced from canal water via Salt River Project (SRP) and an irrigation well which is located behind #11 green. Overseeded bermudagrass requires 2,000,000 gallons of water per acre on an annual basis which results in close to 180,000,000 gallons used annually.

@PHXCOUNTRYCLUB #PCC1899 #PHOENIXCC AGRONOMY UPDATES How many staff members are in the Agronomy department? We currently have 26 full time employees and 4 part time employees. That number includes 2 Assistant Superintendents, 2 Mechanics, 2 irrigators, a horticulturist, 2 Assistant-in Training, and If you have any questions or comments about the upcoming fall season, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for the support! Best Kentonregards,Brunson

2. Move the ball further forward in your stance to allow you to hit the ball on the _ upswing. This, coupled with teeing the ball higher, will create a higher launch _ angle with less back spin, resulting in more carry and distance.

We’d all like to hit the ball further and straighter!

3. A slower back swing helps create more momentum in the downswing, leading _ to increased clubhead speed at impact. (Please note that too much speed on the backswing does not allow for more speed during the downswing.)

I hope everyone has had a great summer and is ready for the new Tennis Season. Some of our members are already off to a flying start after our second annual Tennis Vacation to Carlsbad California. A great time was had by all that came with 4 hours of tennis a day, some of it on the clay, followed by some great meals and drinks as a group. Next year we will be going back to California but a week later (mid to late August) and they cater to all levels, so we would love to see some new faces to join our ever-growing PCC Tennis Community. We are about to start our WITL, ATA and USTA Leagues. I would like to say thank you to all of the team captains, without you these teams would not exist. Good luck to all the teams and do PCC proud this season like you always do. If you are new to the club and are interested in joining a team then please contact me and I can point you in the right direction or even add a new team in January. Calling all new Tennis Players, we are introducing two more 101 clinics. Mondays and Thursday mornings at 9am to go with our 101 class on Saturdays at 930am. We hope you have had a chance to get in and use the Fitness Center and the new equipment. The cardio has so many options—from instructor-led classes to walking/riding/climbing all over the world to pushing a sled across a field to signing into apps like Netflilx or Prime to make your time go by faster. Or maybe you are excited to have a squat rack or hip thrust machine…finally. Or maybe the 2 stretching machines are totally changing your life (that might be an exaggeration but making a difference at least). Your Fitness Center staff is happy to help with any questions you may have.

Does Inflammation Worsen as we Age?

As a matter of fact, yes. But first, what is inflammation, exactly? According to the Mayo Clinic, inflammation is actually how the body protects itself. When you get an injury or infection, the affected tissues send out inflammatory cells to jumpstart the healing process. In the case of an injury, this can cause the damaged area to become red or swollen. When all goes right, inflammation eases up once the damage to the body is repaired. But certain factors can create a state of chronic, long-term inflammation. As we age, our bodies are more prone to experiencing chronic, low-grade inflammation, even without getting injured or sick, according to the National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI). Some of that has to do with cellular changes that naturally happen to older bodies. The problem gets worse for those carrying extra body fat, especially visceral or abdominal fat — which becomes more common with age. "Fat cells are inflammatory-compound-generating machines. And more production of inflammatory chemicals and compounds in the body leads to more inflammation in the body," explains dietitian and doctor of public health Wendy Bazilian, DrPH, RD, author of The Superfoods Rx Diet.

FITNESS CENTER @PHXCOUNTRYCLUB #PCC1899 #PHOENIXCC Here are some ways experts agree on to help fight inflammation: 1. Work toward a healthy weight 2. Look to your diet. a. Eat more colorful plant-based foods. b. Steer clear of trans fats. c. Have more seafood and less red meat. d. Save sugar and processed foods for once in a while. 3. Manage Stress a. Get enough sleep b. Try meditating c. Make time to connect with family and friends. Halloween is Coming! Many of you already know this is my favorite holiday! My goal is to make sure children are engaged with the activities and get involved to their comfort

Autumn is near! Yea, I know, we don't really have much of a fall, per say. No frost, not many trees with leaves turning various colors and falling to the ground. Although the temperature should be dropping below 100 degrees. Finally! The best part of autumn is you our wonderful Members have started to return and are increasingly utilizing the facilities and dining here at your Club. As we begin to get busy, I would like to take a moment to let you know about a couple items of which you should be aware.

Time is flying by and we are less than 70 days away from the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The tournament will be held Thursday, November 10th – Sunday, November 13th where the Top 36 players will be competing for the coveted Charles Schwab Cup (the season-long winner) along with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship (tournament winner). Mark your calendars as every member will receive 2 weekly grounds tickets to the tournament. PGA TOUR and this year we will be hosting our Putt Fore Charity on Thursday, September 29th from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. at Phoenix Country Club. Anyone can come putt our 4-hole course on behalf of their favorite Arizona based non-profit with a chance to win $5,000 to their charity of choice. The event is open to anyone to participate and a chance to mingle with other local non-profits. To sign up or for more information, please contact Kristi Lee Fowlks at kristileefowlks@pgatourhq.com or come visit us in our offices at the club.

Another charity component with our event is our Tickets Fore Charity program, which has raised over $1,700,000 for local Arizona charities over the past 10 years. How this program works is any 501(c)3 non-profit can sign up and when someone goes on our Tickets Fore Charity (www.schwabcuptfc.com) website and purchases a grounds ticket for $30, they pick which charity they would like to receive the entire $30! It does not cost the charity any money! To find out more about how to get a non-profit involved, please email Gina Pagliuco at ginapagliuco@pgatourhq.com.
