Phoenix Auctions - Saturday 7th December 2013

Welcome to Phoenix Auctions Auction No.26 Welcome to our last major auction for 2013. It has been a great year with many highlights and we are looking forward to 2014 when we will continuing to offer you a full range philatelic items. We would like to take this opportunity to thank both our vendors and buyers for their support during 2013 and to wish everyone a happy festive season and a prosperous and healthy New Year. This year we are closing the office from midday on 20th December and we will re-open on 5th January. During our last Boxlot Auction we trialled a new live bidding system. This was successful and we will continue to use the new system for this auction as well. The instructions are simple and are available on the What’s New column on the lefthand side of our home page. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Auction 26 is another big auction with over 1700 lots. It offers the full range of material that you come to expect from us and, while space constraints prevent us from waxing too verbosely, there are a few items that should be noted here. It is always exciting to be able to offer new discoveries for the first time. With this auction we have four significant previously unrecorded items. Lot 1412 is a wrapper cut-out with a Tasmanian ½d green embossed uprated with a ½d green Kangaroo. This was never even expected to exist and is the only State/Commonwealth combination item known. A must-have item for both Commonwealth and Tasmania Postal Stationery collectors. Lots 1323-5 are three imperforate Plate Proof blocks of 4 for the 7½d Royal Visit, the 3½d Nursing and the 3½d SA Stamp Centenary. These were all made from the initial four-on transfer plates used to make up the master plates. They have not been known to exist in private hands until now and the 7½d Royal Visit is not even known from institutional collections. Truly exceptional items for the serious collector. We are pleased to be able to offer a wide range of US Civil War material with patriotic covers and a number fascinating letters to and from serving soldiers. Continuing on the military theme we also have a number of lots from the great Emery collection of Australian World War I. Many of these are still on his original exhibition pages. My Auction 26 Bidsheet. As mentioned earlier My Auction Bidsheet is the most important part of the website when you have placed bids in the auction, because it provides everything you need to manage your bidding. With this screen you can change your bids, add limits to ensure you don’t overspend, enter Credit Card details or other special instructions. And it always shows you the current status of your bids. The lot is highlighted when you have the top bid so it is easy to see the current situation with your bids. As well as being able to modify your bids there is a +5% button which increases your bid to 5% above the current starting price. At the bottom of this webpage there is also a field to globally increase all your bids by any percentage amount. Very useful when your bids are all way below the starting price or you want to give yourself that extra level of safety. The website is there to help you get the most when dealing with Phoenix Auctions. We hope you take a little time to use it to your advantage. Remember that we are always happy to help if you have a problem or questions.

Terms and Conditions: These are found on the rear of your printed bidsheet and on the Phoenix website. At this auction Buyer’s commission is 16.5%

(60+) UNITED STATES OF AMERICA | Military & Censor Mail 1860 Copy of an 1860 28 page letter from Jennie Dunbar residing in Cherry Valley Ohio to her father in which she details her 503 * travels to Virginia to plead (in vain) for clemency on behalf Aaron Dwight Stevens (to whom she was romantically inclined) one of staunch abolitionist John Brown’s recruits for his Oct 16th-18th 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry, and her subsequent support and compassion for him in the final hours prior to his hanging on March 16th 1860. A rare and remarkable social document of great historical merit. [The assault on Harper’s Ferry was an attempt to start an armed slave revolt by seizing the US arsenal held there and establish a stronghold of freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. Having succeeded in capturing the armoury on the evening of the 16th, it was surrounded by local militia and townsfolk on the morning of the 17th with Brown’s only escape route, a bridge across the Potomac River, being captured. Brown then took nine captives into the engine house which became known as “John Brown’s Fort”. Later that day Brown sent out his son Watson Brown & Aaron Stevens with a white flag. Watson Brown was mortally wounded and Stevens was shot and captured. On the 18th a platoon of marines under the command of Colonel Robert E Lee stormed the engine room with all the raiders being killed or captured. This copy of the orginal letter was made by John Brown’s granddaughter Edith Brown in 1888, it is accompanied by a typed transcript of the letter and four images of Aaron Dwight Stevens] 504 * 1861 Civil War manuscript document headed “General Orders” & “Head Quarters 49th Rgt/Tiffin Ohio” with details of military appointments and the consolidation of the chain of command, in fine condition. 502

The letter is contained within an illustrated patriotic envelope with 3c Washington tied by cork cancel with Kenosha ‘MAR/17/1862’ datestamp in blue alongside. Civil War letter with illustrated patriotic letterhead notepaper headed “Camp California Dec 29/Fair Fax County Virginia” from Augustus S.Royer of the 53rd Pennsylvania Regiment. The letter discusses picket guard duties and concerns over being shot or taken prisoner by rebels whilst on duty and finishes with the line “We are the Bloody Fifty Third the crue to rais the Stripes red white and blue.” (sic). Some minor aging. 1863 Civil War letter headed “Vicksburg August 14th 1863” from a Union soldier following the defeat of the Confederate army at the Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4) describing poor conditions in the town, the disillusionment of the residents and the additional suffering caused by Confederate Commander Colonel Pemberton’s reluctance to surrender earlier in the siege. He goes to lament the continuing unneccessary draft of “men at the north” when so many of the local negro population could be drafted to fight (stated in highly derogatory language), and the sickness of so many members of his regiment. Accompanied by a typed transcript of the letter. Fascinating insight into the psyche of a serving Union soldier and his attitude towards the African-Americans of the South for whose freedom he was fighting.

1863 Civil War 4-page letter from E Colvin a member off 33rd Wisconsin Volunteeer Infantry of the Union army, with interesting content including a section in which he states that whilst on picket duty he went to a house to get some canteens filled and spoke to the lady of the house who said before the war she had 36 slaves and 3,000 acres of land and a large amount stock and now she has only one slave and not even one cow is left, ... and wishes the devil had Jeff Davis and his cabinet, the letter also talks of General Grant’s success in East Tennessee, and furlough entitlements, etc, some minor aging. See also Lot 516 & Lot 517. 1863 Civil War letter headed “Louisiana Fort St Philip 28 July 1863” from Union soldier Joseph D Wyman a private with Company E of the 13th Maine Regiment to his wife in Freeport Maine. The letter is accompanied by the original cover showing the letter to have been posted in New York with 3c Washington Scott #65 tied by New York ‘7AUG/1863’ datestamp, both items in fine condition.
