Grand President’s Message
Brothers,
I hope 2025 is treating you well. Phi Sig is moving forward in many directions. In my prior Signet messages, I have focused on various aspects of the Grand Chapter’s Strategic Plan. I write to share how I have seen first-hand its impact on our Brotherhood.
One of my personal priorities as Grand President is to connect with as many undergraduate Brothers as possible: at Convention, at Officer Academy, and at Shonk Leadership School. I have also visited 15 Phi Sig campuses where I have met with e-boards, chapter advisers, and rooms full of Brothers undergraduates and alumni:
• Xi Deuteron University of Tennessee Knoxville
• Iota Stevens Institute of Technology
• Alpha Octagon New Jersey Institute of Technology
• Epsilon Triton American University
• Pi Pentaton Northern Illinois University
• Omega Deuteron University of Southern California
• Gamma Tetarton Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
• Omicron Sepaton Villanova University
• Phi Deuteron University of Kentucky
• Eta Hexaton University of Dayton
• Epsilon Octagon University of Cincinnati
CARDINAL PRINCIPLES
To Promote Brotherhood
To Stimulate Scholarship
To Develop Character
MISSION STATEMENT
Phi Sigma Kappa is a lifelong brotherhood dedicated to the betterment of the individual, the university community, and our world, by giving its members opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in service to others, achieve academic excellence, experience cultural diversity and practice personal integrity.
CORE VALUES
Demand Excellence
Commit to Lifelong Learning
Meet Challenges with Innovation
Value Brotherhood Above Self
• Pi Deuteron The Ohio State University
• Nu Tetarto Rutgers University
• Chi Septaton Georgia Southern University
• Zeta Triton Montana State University
Listening to these brothers share their Phi Sig journey was insightful some are struggling with rush, others are burnt out or learning to ask for help, and many are navigating the transition from new member to mentor. Officers spoke about the challenges of accountability and the comfort of the Brotherhood, but the common theme was pride pride in being a Phi Sig and the opportunities it provides. These visits continue to inspire me and reaffirm the incredible impact of the Grand Council, staff, alumni volunteers, and donors. A special thanks to Executive Director Joe Kern and Growth Specialists Luke Coogan and Dillon Davis for their support on these visits.
Lastly, please mark your calendars for this summer’s 70th General convention in Las Vegas. It will be a great celebration of our Brotherhood. I look forward to seeing many of you.
Damn Proud,
David L. Cohen ’88, Beta Grand President
Executive Director’s Message
Brothers,
In my last message, I spoke about the invaluable connections that unite us how alumni and undergraduates come together to strengthen our brotherhood. Today, I want to focus on the future not just for ourselves, but for those who follow. As leaders and men of Phi Sigma Kappa, planning ensures our fraternity’s legacy while preparing ourselves, our families, and future brothers for tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities.
Joe Kern Executive Director
First, thank you to the alumni who answered the call after reading the last issue. Many devoted brothers stepped forward to volunteer, mentor, and share their expertise. Your commitment inspires us, and we’re grateful. But there’s always room for more. Whether mentoring undergraduates, supporting chapters, or sharing your story, your involvement makes an impact.
Planning for Tomorrow: The future brings challenges. As the enrollment cliff reshapes higher education and rising costs burden students, Phi Sigma Kappa’s role becomes even more vital. Our fraternity is more than a social organization it’s a training ground for life. Here, young men gain critical skills that serve them well beyond graduation. They learn problem-solving, navigate tough conversations, and develop leadership abilities that translate into success in their careers, homes, and communities.
Our Shared Responsibility: As brothers, we must ensure Phi Sigma Kappa continues providing these transformative experiences. Whether through mentorship, financial support, or simply showing up, we each play a role in building a meaningful future. There are impactful ways to support the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation. One is participating in our Annual Day of Giving on March 13, which generates over 75% of the funding for undergraduates. Another is our new planned giving initiative launching on Founder’s Day, March 15, supported by Crescendo, helping us secure our future for generations.
Let’s Build a Future Together: Planning for the future isn’t just about the fraternity it’s about the lives we touch. The young man who learns to lead because of your mentorship. The brother who receives a scholarship because of your generosity. The chapter that thrives because of your guidance. These are the legacies we create together. To those who have stepped forward—thank you. To those considering it, know your involvement, big or small, makes a difference. Whether volunteering, giving, or reconnecting, there’s a place for everyone in this vision.
Let’s ensure Phi Sigma Kappa is known and honored, not just for what we’ve accomplished, but for what we continue to build.
Fraternally,
Joe Kern Executive Director

Foundation President’s Message
A Year of Growth, A Legacy of Impact
Brothers,
As we reflect on the past year, it is impossible to overlook the profound impact that the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation has had on our undergraduate brothers and the continued strength of our Fraternity. The strides we have made both in growth and in the quality of support we provide are a direct result of the generosity and commitment of our alumni and friends.
Your contributions empower our mission, making it possible for young men across the country to experience transformational leadership programs like Officer Academy and Leadership School. These initiatives equip our undergraduates with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead their chapters and communities. We recently returned from Dallas, where the 2025 Officer Academy provided Chapter Presidents, Secretaries, and Recruitment Chairs with the tools not just to succeed but to thrive. These young men left not only with new skills but also with a deeper understanding of the responsibilities they hold within their chapters.
Programs like these matter now more than ever. In a world where young men seek belonging, growth, and purpose, Phi Sigma Kappa provides a space for them to develop into principled leaders. Whether you are a brother who hasn’t connected in a while or someone who hopes every future Phi Sig can have the same transformative experience you once had, you can help. Every gift, no matter the size, reduces costs for these men and ensures that more brothers have access to the programs that shape their futures.
We are building something greater than ourselves. Your support strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and ensures that the next generation of Phi Sigs continues to grow, lead, and uphold our values. Together, we secure the legacy of our Fraternity not just for today, but for generations to come.
Fraternally,
Clay Skurdal (Montana State ’82) President, Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation
A Message from Phi Sigma Kappa Properties
Happy New Year brothers,
2025 brings another opportunity for us to grow our brotherhood. While the Grand Chapter is busy growing our fraternity across the USA, Phi Sigma Kappa Properties has been working with alumni associations to grow our current chapters. Over the past year we have been working with alumni associations to refinance housing debt, pay off contractors, improve housing conditions, and provide support to alumni clubs on a wide variety of housing issues.
Phi Sigma Kappa Properties is an all-volunteer board that seeks to help our alumni improve the housing of our Phi Sigma Kappa chapters. If you are looking for help, but are unsure where to turn to, send us an email and we will get you in touch with a board member who has expertise in the area you are looking for.
As a volunteer what you do is so important to the long-term success of our fraternity. Without our volunteers advancing the mission of Phi sigma Kappa would be impossible. We all have a choice on how we decide to meet our life-long commitment, thank you from all of us for the work that you do to ensure the continued success of our fraternity.
This summer Phi Sigma Kappa heads to Las Vegas for our 70th annual convention. We are hoping to attract members of our housing corporations and alumni clubs with some new programs specifically for these groups. We are looking to broaden our connections with our alumni in the critical area of campus housing. No matter which campus you hail from, the greek housing community is a rapidly evolving marketplace over the last 4 years. Bringing together our members who do this critical work will benefit all of Phi Sigma Kappa. The problems you face are shared by many of our other housing corporations across the country. Having a place to share our successes, failures, and expertise will help us in our chapters. If you can make the time to be there, we would love to see you.
Convention years are a great time for alumni to come together and renew our bonds of brotherhood. They offer us a chance to recount all the great things this fraternity has done for us, since we were kids, looking for a place to belong. While giving a place to talk about the future, and what we can do going forward.
We hope you can join us in Las Vegas this summer to celebrate and advance this great fraternity for the next era of brothers ready to take up the mantle in service of Phi Sigma Kappa.
PSK Properties is financially self-sustaining and does not receive any revenue by way of membership dues paid to the Grand Chapter or donations made to the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation. It is run by a fully volunteer Board of Directors.
Shawn Shivnen Properties President

2025 Conclave: Officer and Advisor Academy
Phi Sigma Kappa hosted its seventh annual national Conclave: Officer and Adviser Academy in Dallas, TX, from January 31 to February 2. This year’s Conclave brought together chapter presidents, secretaries, recruitment chairmen, and alumni volunteers. With just over 100 attendees representing 57 undergraduate chapters, the event highlighted collaboration, education, and leadership development.
The Conclave featured an engaging mix of programming, including small group sessions tailored to specific officer roles and large group discussions on fraternity-wide issues. This combination of targeted and broader topics allowed attendees to see how their roles contribute to both their local chapters and the larger fraternity community.
General Session Highlights
Updated Accreditation Program: The centerpiece of this year’s programming was the fraternity’s newly updated Accreditation program for undergraduate chapters. The IHQ staff introduced the framework, outlining how chapters can meet accreditation expectations, report completed items, and adhere to the program’s timeline. Designed to align with campus accreditation systems, the program streamlines chapter evaluations and enhances staff’s ability to allocate resources efficiently. Additionally, it simplifies
the chapter awards process while fostering stronger alignment with institutional standards.
Risk Management Session: Chase Stockton led an impactful session on risk management, sharing effective strategies for handling incidents and navigating student conduct processes. The presentation addressed current trends in student behavior and offered attendees actionable insights. A lively Q&A session provided an opportunity to discuss specific risk management challenges and strategies.
Networking Roundtables: Saturday concluded with Networking Roundtables, where attendees connected with fellow members, alumni, staff, and volunteers. This session encouraged dialogue on shared challenges and innovative solutions, fostering collaboration across chapters.
Track-Specific Highlights
President Track: With over 50 presidents in attendance, the President Track remained a cornerstone of the Conclave. Led by Drew Kerwood, Phi Sigma Kappa’s Senior Director of Learning and Development, the track covered key areas such as leadership strategies, managing the accreditation process, workload delegation, and balancing the dual roles of officer and brother.
Secretary Track: For the first time, secretaries participated in an in-person Officer Academy, building on the virtual sessions offered in previous years. Recognizing the pivotal role secretaries play in the accreditation process, Dave Hammons, Associate Executive Director, led sessions on effective communication, resource management, and fulfilling their duties successfully.
Recruitment Track: The Recruitment Track, led by the fraternity’s Growth Team Lindsey Hollis (Director of Organizational Growth), Luke Coogan (Senior Growth Specialist), and Dillon Davis (Growth Specialist) focused on creating sustainable recruitment plans. Sessions emphasized values-based recruitment strategies, involving all members in recruitment efforts, and addressing bid refusals. The track also explored the role of recruitment in mitigating hazing behaviors.
Adviser Track: Ten chapter advisers and alumni board members participated in programming tailored for first-year volunteers. Joey Teeple, Director of Volunteer Initiatives, developed a curriculum to equip advisers with essential tools for success. Topics included understanding Phi Sigma Kappa’s policies, fostering accountability, building campus partnerships, and effectively mentoring Gen Z students.
Governing Board Meetings
In addition to officer and adviser training, the fraternity’s governing boards convened during the Conclave. This included the Grand Council, the Foundation Board of Trustees, and the Properties Board. The overlap allowed board members to engage with Conclave attendees, further strengthening connections between leadership and the broader membership.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 Conclave: Officer and Adviser Academy upheld its reputation as a premier training and development opportunity, earning positive feedback from undergraduate and alumni attendees alike. The Grand Council and IHQ staff extend their gratitude to all participants and look forward to welcoming attendees to the 2026 Conclave next year.
IHQ Welcomes New Staff
In the final months of 2024, Phi Sigma Kappa International Headquarters welcomed three new staff members to the team.
Bryce Haws has joined us as the Financial Specialist, taking over for Marsha Spears, who has retired after years of dedicated service. Danyel Holder has been brought on as our Administrative Coordinator and will be the first point of contact when you visit the headquarters office. Additionally, Avery Sallee was hired as our new Communications Manager, further strengthening our team’s ability to engage and connect with our members.
Bryce is coming to IHQ straight out of college. He graduated from Brigham Young University Idaho at the end of 2022 with his bachelor’s in business management. Since then, he has worked as a Data Analyst, an HR Specialist, and an Accounts Payable Specialist.
“I am so grateful to get to work with such a wonderful group of people and for such a good cause. It’s incredible to see the amount of growth and work Phi Sig has helped accomplish over the years and I am honored to be a part of the Fraternity’s future accomplishments. I consider working for Phi Sig as my “big break” and will do everything I can to not let the brothers down. I know I have big shoes to fill (i.e. Marsha Spears) but I am excited for the chance.”
Danyel comes to IHQ with over 10 years of administrative/ customer service experience and has worked with companies like Simon Property Group, Century 21 Sheetz, The Chris Center, and more. Holder attended Herron University of Art & Design at IU Indianapolis and studied graphic design.
“I am incredibly excited to start this new chapter with Phi Sigma Kappa! The opportunity to work with such a talented team and contribute to this fraternity in helping shape young lives is truly inspiring. I’m eager to bring my passion to the table, and I can’t wait to dive into the challenges and rewards of being a part of Phi Sigma Kappa.”
Avery is a May 2024 graduate of Ball State University where she studied Emerging Media Design and Development. As she starts her first post-grad job, she is excited to learn and grow through Phi Sigma Kappa.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Phi Sigma Kappa so far, and I’m excited to continue contributing to this amazing fraternity. Working with the fraternity has already allowed me to connect with so many incredible people, and I’m looking forward to meeting even more of you at upcoming events and gatherings!”

Your Legacy, Their Legacy, OUR Legacy, The
DAYOF GIVING
MARCH 13,2025
This Day of Giving, we honor the enduring Legacy of Phi Sigma Kappa — a legacy shaped by generations of brothers who have come before us and those who will follow.
Legacy is deeply personal yet profoundly collective. As brothers, each of us creates our own legacy during our undergraduate years, leaving a positive, memorable mark on our chapters. For some, this legacy extends beyond graduation, whether by serving as a volunteer, joining a board, or becoming a generous supporter of the Brotherhood. Even at life’s end, Phi Sigma Kappa remains part of our story a testament to a lifelong bond.
Your generosity and support on this Day of Giving provides current undergraduates the resources they need to build their own Phi Sig legacies. Through scholarships, leadership programs, and chapter support, brothers have the opportunity to grow as leaders, scholars, and individuals laying the foundation for a lifetime of impact. By investing in their success, you help ensure the next generation of brothers continues to strengthen our collective legacy.
Together, our individual contributions form the greater Phi Sigma Kappa Legacy. What began in 1873, when six men at Massachusetts Agricultural College laid the foundation, has grown into a vibrant tradition. While the fraternity has evolved with the times, our core principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Character, remain steadfast.
This Day of Giving, we invite you to celebrate this shared legacy. Reflect on the impact Phi Sigma Kappa has had on your life, honor the brothers who came before us, and give back to empower future generations. Together, we proclaim: We are Phi Sigma Kappa, and this is our Legacy.

Dear Brothers,
For over 150 years, Phi Sigma Kappa has stood as a symbol of brotherhood, leadership, and purpose. It is through the dedication of brothers like you that we have enriched lives, fostered leadership, and upheld our mission to make a difference in the world. As we celebrate our past, we must also look to the future, one that requires vision, generosity, and commitment to ensure our fraternity’s continued success.
Why Your Legacy Matters
Today’s collegiate brothers face challenges that grow more complex with each passing year, rising tuition, economic uncertainty, and an evolving campus environment. The foundation of our brotherhood remains strong, but its future depends on the investments we make today. By joining the Phi Sigma Kappa Legacy Society, you can extend your impact far beyond your lifetime, ensuring that future generations experience the same brotherhood and opportunities that shaped your life.
Your planned gift will directly support scholarships, leadership programs, and chapter resources, empowering young brothers to lead, serve, and thrive. Imagine the lives you will touch, the brother who achieves his dream of graduating thanks to a scholarship, the future leader inspired by attending a leadership development program, or the chapter strengthened by your generosity.
The Phi Sig Legacy Society: Relaunching March 15, 2025
This Founders’ Day, we are proud to introduce Crescendo, a groundbreaking online platform designed to simplify your planned giving journey. Crescendo will offer you the tools and resources to explore how your gift can make the greatest impact while providing financial benefits to you and your family.
From bequests and IRA rollovers to gifts of securities and real estate, Crescendo will guide you through flexible giving options tailored to your needs.

4. Gifts of Securities or Real Estate: Make a significant impact while receiving potential tax benefits.
Every gift, large or small, strengthens our brotherhood and ensures that Phi Sigma Kappa thrives for generations to come.
A Distinguished Brotherhood
When you make a planned gift, you join an elite group of brothers in the Phi Sigma Kappa Legacy Society. Together, we can secure the future of our fraternity while honoring the values that have united us for over a century.

A Special Thank You to our Chapter Advisers!

These Brothers or in some cases non member volunteers, take time out of their professional and personal lives in order to help our undergraduate brothers be successful. A special thank you to the following active Chapter Advisers!
Don’t see your chapter listed? This means your chapter might need an active adviser. Please contact Joey Teeple, teeple@phisigmakappa.org, to gather more information!

Brothers Support in Time of Need
By Kip Biby, Sigma Epsilon ’17
In June of this year, Brother Eric Coughlin ’16 of the Sigma Epsilon chapter at Ferris State University and his wife, Micayla, took their two young daughters out for ice cream. Across the street from the ice cream shop in Rochester Hills, MI, was a splash pad where they noticed a friend and decided to say hello. Moments after walking over, gunshots rang out.
A gunman pulled up in a vehicle at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, a play area with water features intended for children. The gunmen exited the vehicle with two handguns and proceeded to fire 36 rounds from a Glock 43 semi-automatic handgun, reloading several times, before fleeing the scene in the vehicle.
Eric, who was holding their seven-month-old baby, immediately ran to find a place to take cover. Micayla sheltered their two-yearold daughter with her own body. During the chaos, Eric was struck in the back of the leg while running, and Micayla was hit six times. Their two-year-old daughter was injured by shrapnel in her leg. When the gunman fled the scene, bystanders quickly called the police and rushed to assist the family. They were transported to the hospital, where both Eric and Micayla were immediately taken into surgery. Meanwhile, their children were cared for by family friends as the couple began their long journey to recovery both physically and mentally.
The day after the shooting, Eric and Micayla were brought into the same hospital room to be reunited. Friends and family visited, offering their support. Almost immediately, an outpouring of love and assistance began flooding in. Micayla’s Delta Zeta sisters, Eric’s Phi Sigma Kappa brothers, their extended family, and even total strangers who had heard the story on the news rallied around them. A GoFundMe campaign raised over $100,000 to help provide financial stability for their family during their recovery.
Much of this generosity came from Eric’s Phi Sig brothers, embodying the fraternity’s values of brotherhood and mutual support. Damn Proud.
Today, the Coughlins are on the path to healing. While Micayla’s extensive injuries still require time to mend, and both she and Eric face daily challenges as they rebuild their lives, their resilience continues to inspire those around them. Their courage in protecting their daughters during the shooting and their unwavering commitment to each other in its aftermath is nothing short of extraordinary. Eric and Micayla are known for their generosity and willingness to help others, and it is heartening to see the same selflessness returned to them by their community especially Eric’s Phi Sig brothers. This story reminds us of the strength of family, the power of community, and the enduring spirit of brotherhood.

Farewell to Two Pillars of Phi Sigma Kappa IHQ
Phi Sigma Kappa International Headquarters recently bid a heartfelt farewell to two of our most dedicated and beloved staff members, Kathy Cannady and Marsha Spears. After more than three decades of unwavering service, both have stepped into a well-earned retirement, leaving behind a legacy that has shaped the Fraternity in countless ways.
Their dedication, kindness, and commitment to Phi Sigma Kappa have left a lasting impact on brothers and staff alike. While we will certainly miss their presence at IHQ, we know that their influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
We wish Kathy and Marsha all the best as they embrace this new chapter of their lives. Though they may be retiring, they will always remain a cherished part of the Phi Sigma Kappa family!
Phi Sigma Kappa heads to Montana State University!
In Fall 2024, Phi Sigma Kappa began the process of reestablishing the Zeta Triton chapter at Montana State University. Initial discussions about the project started in 2018 between International Headquarters (IHQ), alumni, and university staff. However, the onset of COVID-19 in 2020 delayed the project’s commencement. In early 2023, Lindsey Hollis, Director of Organizational Growth for Phi Sigma Kappa, reignited these conversations and successfully secured the project for Fall 2024.
Following confirmation, Lindsey hired Growth Specialist and project lead Dillon Davis (Northwest Missouri State ’24) . Lindsey, Dillon, and Senior Growth Specialist Luke Coogan (Hope ’23) visited the Montana State University campus during the summer of 2024 to finalize plans and address logistical questions in preparation for the fall semester.
After months of staff training, research, and preparation including crafting social media campaigns, ordering promotional materials, and establishing relationships with local fraternity and sorority life members IHQ staff began an intensive six-week recruitment effort in August 2024. The campaign kicked off with Catapalooza, a vibrant campus tradition described by the university as “a premier opportunity for MSU students to interact with a wide variety of student organizations, MSU offices, and Bozeman community organizations.” From that point forward, Dillon and Luke immersed themselves in recruitment activities, hosting events, conducting informational meetings, and tabling across campus.
Despite encountering some minor challenges, Dillon successfully recruited five Zeta Triton Founding Fathers by the end of the first month. In early December, these new members were officially associated during a ritual attended by Phi Sigma Kappa Grand President David Cohen (Union College ’88) and Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation President Clay Skurdal (Montana State University ’82) , alongside other notable Zeta Triton alumni.
Since their association, the Founding Fathers have continued to meet virtually with Dillon on a weekly basis. These meetings focus on education about Phi Sigma Kappa’s values and traditions, establishing an executive board, and strategizing further recruitment efforts to grow the chapter.
Phi Sigma Kappa takes great pride in the efforts of Dillon Davis and Luke Coogan at Montana State University. The Zeta Triton chapter is heading into the spring semester with enthusiasm and promise. Both members and alumni are thrilled to see the chapter revived, Confident it will continue to create meaningful memories and opportunities for its members, both past and present.

Balancing Academics, Sports, and Phi Sigma Kappa
Being a college athlete is one of the most challenging pursuits a person can undertake. But for some, the demands don’t end there. Take Vicente Lyon, for example he not only juggles the rigorous schedule of college football but also embraces the responsibilities of Greek life as a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. Balancing academics, athletics, and fraternity commitments is no small feat, but Lyon navigates it with remarkable dedication and poise.
The Love of the Game
Vicente Lyon has always had a deep passion for sports. Growing up, he played soccer, a game his father enjoyed, and it quickly became something he loved as well. However, Lyon also developed a strong interest in football. He began playing football in his sophomore year of high school, unsure of which position would be the best fit for him. Drawing from his soccer background, he decided to try his hand at kicker or punter, believing his skills in soccer would translate well.
Lyon committed himself to training and mastering the fundamentals of the position, and he soon fell in love with the game. Today, he serves as the punter for the Hobart College football team. Reflecting on his journey, Lyon says he has never once regretted choosing football over soccer. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve enjoyed every moment,” he says.
Joining Phi Sig
Vicente Lyon had always been curious about Greek life, but he didn’t know much about it when he first entered college. However, after seeing a few of his teammates involved in a fraternity, his interest was sparked.
Since joining Phi Sigma Kappa, Lyon has gained valuable insights that have positively impacted both his personal life and athletic career. “The sense of brotherhood within the fraternity has been incredible it helps me stay focused on my goals and provides the support I need to remain motivated,” Lyon explains. “That sense of community drives me in everything I do, from academics to sports.”
Finding Balance
Balancing a fraternity, academics, and a collegiate sport is no easy thing to do, but Lyon has learned that managing all these responsibilities requires strong time management and discipline. “I prioritize my studies, making sure assignments are completed before turning to football practice or fraternity activities. By creating a schedule, I can allocate time for each responsibility and keep everything organized,” Lyon explains.
Whether he’s studying, practicing, or attending a Phi Sig event, Lyon likes to stay fully focused on the task at hand, ensuring clear boundaries between his commitments. He also makes a point to find time to recharge and rest whenever possible.
Support
Joining a fraternity or sorority can provide an incredible support system, and for Lyon, the support he’s found within his Phi Sig chapter has been invaluable especially as he balances the demanding schedule of a collegiate athlete. Lyon explains that his fraternity brothers understand the commitment required to play a college sport, and he always feels their encouragement and motivation.
“Whether it’s showing up to games or helping me study, the sense of brotherhood extends far beyond social life,” Lyon says. “Having that support system keeps me grounded and gives me the extra push I need to succeed.”
Advice from Vicente Lyon
Lyon’s biggest piece of advice for anyone wanting to play a college sport while also joining a fraternity or sorority is to manage time wisely and stay organized. He explains that college sports demand a significant level of dedication, and Greek life adds an additional layer of responsibilities.
“Make sure academics remain a top priority, as they are the foundation of your college experience,” Lyon advises. “Don’t be afraid to lean on your support systems — your teammates and fraternity or sorority brothers and sisters can help keep you grounded. Most importantly, make the most of both opportunities. The friendships, networks, and skills you gain through sports and Greek life will help you grow both personally and professionally.”
Legends of the Game
Phi Sigma Kappa has been home to countless remarkable athletes over the years. It’s clear that it takes a unique individual to excel as both a student-athlete and a fraternity member. The dedication, discipline, and perseverance shown by our brothers throughout the years are a testament to the high standards of hard work and commitment that define our fraternity.

ALUMNI RECEPTIONS LEAD TO REGIONAL CONNECTION!
The Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation proudly continued its Alumni Reception series this fall with two vibrant and memorable events in New York City and Washington, D.C. These gatherings celebrated brotherhood, connection, and the enduring bond shared by Phi Sigma Kappa members across generations.
The events were a resounding success, bringing together brothers from various chapters and eras to reconnect, reminisce, and forge new friendships. Against the iconic backdrops of New York City and the nation’s capital, attendees shared stories, networked, and strengthened the ties that make our brotherhood so unique. It was an inspiring reminder of the power of our shared values and the lifelong connections Phi Sigma Kappa fosters.
These receptions also served as the launchpad for an exciting new initiative: regional alumni groups. With the support of the International Headquarters (IHQ), these groups will create
opportunities for alumni to stay actively involved with Phi Sigma Kappa through city- and region-specific gatherings. From happy hours to networking events, these volunteer-led groups will help keep the spirit of Phi Sigma Kappa alive and thriving in communities across the country.
Whether you’re a recent graduate looking to stay connected or a seasoned alumnus eager to give back, these regional groups offer a fantastic way to engage with the brotherhood. If you’re interested in starting a group in your area, we encourage you to reach out to Joey Teeple at teeple @ phisigmakappa.org. Together, we can continue building a stronger, more connected brotherhood that lasts a lifetime.

70th General Convention: Alumni Club Participation
Phi Sigma Kappa’s 70th General Convention is approaching, and we look forward to strong participation from our alumni clubs. This event provides a meaningful opportunity for alumni to contribute to the fraternity’s progress while connecting with brothers from across the country. To ensure your alumni club is eligible to vote at the General Convention, it is essential to maintain “good standing” with the Grand Chapter.
To achieve good standing and secure voting privileges, alumni clubs must prioritize the following actions:
• Submit an updated roster of alumni club members, including leadership roles, to IHQ.
• Pay sustaining dues for all members listed on the alumni club roster. Voting privileges are determined based on the number of sustaining members, as follows:
• 0 to 25 members: one vote
• 26 to 45 members: two votes
• 46 to 65 members: three votes
• 66 to 85 members: four votes
• 86 or more members: five votes
• File the required club report with IHQ.
All requirements must be completed prior to June 30th, 2025.
Additionally, alumni clubs are encouraged to begin considering who their voting delegates will be for the General Convention.
If you have any questions about alumni club voting privileges or need assistance submitting your information, please contact Director of Volunteer Initiatives Joey Teeple at teeple@phisigmakappa.org
We look forward to seeing your club represented at the 70th General Convention!

General Conventions Shape Fraternity’s Direction
The 70th General Convention will be held in Las Vegas July 30 – August 2. The Fraternity has come a long way since the first General Convention, which was held June 18, 1888 in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Two petitions were acted upon during this event. The first adopted a design for the badge and the second allowed for the initiation of alumni members.
The main feature of this meeting, however, was the presentation of a new draft of the constitution. It closely followed the previous constitution, but there were some important innovations. The new document provided for a permanent historian, alumni clubs with the privilege of representation at the General Convention, alumni chapter organizations with the right of incorporation, the election of graduate members into the Fraternity, election of honorary members, annual General Conventions, and the assessment of a voluntary tax. The draft was read and discussed, but not acted upon. It was the feeling of the delegates that no hasty amendment of the constitution should be made.
The 26th General Convention, held in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1934 saw the adoption of the Creed and Cardinal Principles.
The 28th General Convention, held in San Francisco, California in 1938, featured the adoption of a revised Ritual of Initiation and the creation of the six degrees of membership, in honor of the six founding fathers of Phi Sigma Kappa.
In 1948 at the 32nd General Convention, The Fraternity celebrated its 75th anniversary at the Diamond Jubilee Convention in Boston and Amherst, Massachusetts.
The 100th Anniversary of the Fraternity was celebrated at the 44th General Convention, held once again in Amherst. A special plaque honoring the centennial was added to the “Shrine,” a memorial tablet on the wall of Old North dormitory, where Phi Sigma Kappa was founded.
The highlight of the 50th General Convention in 1985 was the merger with Phi Sigma Epsilon.
Phi Sigma Kappa’s 150th anniversary was celebrated during the 69th General Convention, held in New Orleans, Louisiana.
General Conventions have been held every two years since 1894, with a few exceptions, during World War I and World War II and at the time of the Fraternity’s 100th Anniversary. (It was decided to move the Convention from 1972 to 1973 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Fraternity.) Brothers from undergraduate chapters and alumni clubs convene to conduct the business of the Fraternity, elect Grand Council officers and observe the Fraternity’s Ritual of Initiation.
General Conventions are also a time for the boards of the Fraternity’s three entities to hold annual meetings. Members of the Grand Council, Trustees of the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation, and Phi Sigma Kappa Properties Board members conduct much of their business during this time frame.
The Shonk Leadership School is also held in conjunction with General Conventions. Undergraduate and alumni members engage in meaningful educational sessions for chapter-related issues and personal development.
The General Convention has become a time for personal and professional development, spending time with brothers, and progressing Phi Sig by conducting the business of the Grand Chapter. Every General Convention is different, and each year’s experience is unique.
The Shonk Archive and Educational Center, housed in the International Headquarters, contains a display dedicated to the Fraternity’s General Conventions. Photos of some of the items highlighted in the archive are shown here.
Please help us preserve the Fraternity’s history by donating to the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation and specifying that it should be used for the Shonk Archive and Educational Center.
