Executive Director, Thomas Murphy (Mu Alpha’94), has informed the Phi Mu Delta National Council and the Educational Foundation of his intent to not seek an additional contract following the current term. Tom has served the Fraternity as Executive Director for sixteen years. In that time, 22 Chapters have been established and over 3500 men have joined the Fraternity, accounting for one quarter of the living membership. Several key leadership programs, including the Foundations Officer Training School and the Sapphire Leadership Institute, were created during his tenure.

Murphy was hired in 2006 after a 29-year absence of professional staff running the daily operations of the Fraternity. At the time there were eight active Chapters with 200 undergraduate members. The National Office was opened in Cherry Hill in 2006 and later moved to Haddon Township in 2015. Over the years, seven staff members and three summer interns have helped to support the growth, development, and improvement of the Fraternity.

Interfraternalism has been an important element of Tom’s success. He has served on the Board of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Foundation and as a Member-at-Large on the North-American Interfraternity Conference Governing Council. Currently, he sits on the Board of Directors of the Fraternity Executives Association. These associations have strengthened Phi Mu Delta and provided the Fraternity a larger platform of influence compared with other smaller organizations.

National President, Joseph Thompson (Mu Alpha’08), stated,

“Under Tom’s tenure, we have enjoyed sixteen years of impactful leadership. He has enhanced the undergraduate experience, quality of our chapters, and reputation as a Fraternity. Tom has taken pride in knowing every single undergraduate member of our organization over the years, which shows his commitment not just to his role as Fraternity Executive, but as a mentor and brother to all. It has been an honor to work with him.

Educational Foundation Chairman, Michael Mallon (Mu Epsilon’95), echoed President Thompson,

“Over the last 16 years, Tom has been instrumental in the formation of the Phi Mu Delta Education Foundation and in fostering both its board and mission. There are simply too many ways Tom has helped advance the Educational Foundation to mention here; but I would be remiss without expressing our heartfelt appreciation for everything he has done! His guidance has led to a growing success in us being able to support our undergraduates both through scholarships and learning experiences. We wish him nothing but the best as he moves on to his next adventure and we want him to know that his presence will continue to have an impact on this organization well into the future! “
