Convention 2006 – Funding Your Trip The 2006 National Convention is right around the corner. Does your chapter have a representative attending? Here are some ideas on how your chapter can sponsor members’ trips to Convention: • Contact your school’s student activities board: Many chapters have found that their school offers money to organizations looking to take on educational opportunities. The 2006 Convention is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of some “free money” from your University.

• Plan and execute Convention-specific fundraisers: It’s not too late! Start talking with your chapter about the possibility of setting up some fundraisers intended to send a brother to Convention. See the Guide to Money Management for some great fundraising ideas.

• “i wanna be a ROCK STAR”: Have you thought about entering the “i wanna be a ROCK STAR” contest? Have you gotten your tshirt yet? From the National Collegiate Representative Brothers, It is truly bittersweet for me, sitting here writing my last address to you as your National Collegiate Representative. I hope this message finds you enjoying the warmer weather and preparing for a summer full of fun and brotherhood! The spring semester will be coming to an end soon and our National Convention is looming on the horizon. New brothers are being welcomed into our fraternity, even as you read this message. The only way they can experience the true Sinfonia is through you and the brotherhood that you exude. This brings me to my point.

I am lucky to have come from a chapter with great tradition. The Gamma Theta chapter at the University of North Texas has long been a strong chapter because of the support it receives from a very large music school. Yet, in my time at my chapter, I was privileged to see (and be a part of) a sort of “rebirth” of Phi Mu Alpha at UNT. Our chapter went from 10 brothers to about 40 in a span of 1-2 years. It was an amazing thing to witness! It happened with a group of guys being initiated that were taught well by their elder chapter members, and who “got it”. From there, the message and passion of Sinfonia spread like wildfire! I was very lucky to be able to be a part of this, and to serve my chapter in a variety of ways, including on the province level as CPR for 2 years. All of my experiences at these levels were strong, life-changing experiences steeped in brotherhood and music.

However, I can say now, without a doubt, that even though I was one of those guys that “got it” and valued Sinfonia from the moment I was pinned, I never truly realized the depth of the order until I experienced a national Convention. I was lucky to be able to be a part of the 2000 and 2003 National Conventions. The Convention in 2003 had special meaning to me because of being elected NCR, and the fact that it wasn’t in my back yard (Dallas in 2000). It is hard to explain fully the impact of that week on me as a man, but I will tell you this; the most meaningful experience I had at the 2003 Convention was not the legislation, or the election, or the parties. The most meaningful moment of that Convention to me was when we, on the spot, decided to serenade Frederick Fennell’s wife in the small lobby in front of the doors to the assembly hall.

My point is this, brothers. You have heard me ramble on about experiencing the fraternity on a national level in order to really appreciate the true meaning of brotherhood and Sinfonia. You know that I believe our alumni issue can only be truly solved by doing something from here on out to make sure that when brothers graduate, they keep in touch. Well, this summer is your chance. You are not going to keep being an active Sinfonian because you go to workshop. You are not going to remain an active Sinfonian after graduation because you got to meet your NCR, or your National President, or the National Honorary for 2006. You will stay involved because of those impromptu moments that cause you to remember why you love this fraternity so much! You will stay involved because when you sing in the chorus of the National Convention ritual, you will get chills and realize what a special moment you are a part of. When you are brought to tears by the beauty of the Sinfonia, brothers, then you know that you truly “get it”. It doesn’t make you any less of a man; quite the contrary.

Those are the same tears wept by our elder brother in the hope that you and I, the later priests that were to follow in his path, would someday come and waken his ancient song. Those moments I speak of will be at the Convention this summer. Do yourself and your Fraternity a favor and be there. Not just for you, but also for all of the other brothers whose lives you will touch by experiencing the love and brotherhood that will abound in Cleveland this July!

John A. Mongiovi, Upsilon Psi (South Florida) ‘94

Richard Crosby holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education (1979), a Master of Music degree in Piano and Wind Conducting (1981) and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano (1990) from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Dr. Crosby was appointed to the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University in 1986 where he serves as Professor of Music. Initiated in 1975 into the Eta-Omicron chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the fraternity for men in music, Dr. Crosby served as Collegiate Province Representative for the fraternity’s Province 3, and has served since 1988 as Governor of Province 25. He was a trustee of the Sinfonia Foundation from 1988-97, served as committeeman-at-large and National Secretary/Treasurer on the National Executive Committee from 1988-94 and served as National President from 1994-97. He was once again elected National President in 2003 and is currently a trustee on the Sinfonia Educational Foundation.

Dr. Crosby’s compact disc/cassette recording, “An American Portrait,” released in 1994, features works of Charles Griffes, Amy Beach, William Grant Still, David Guion, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Lee Hoiby and George Gershwin.

In addition, his new edition of William Grant Still’s “Seven Traceries” has been published by William Grant Still Music.

Dr. Crosby is the composer of a number of art songs and a Trombone Sonata which is being published by the ITA Press. His latest project is a largescale symphonic band work entitled, “Appalachian Variations,” written in celebration of the Centennial of Eastern Kentucky University.

John Mongiovi was initiated in April 1994 into the Upsilon Psi Chapter at the University of South Florida in Tampa, and into the Mu Chapter at University of Oklahoma in April 2003. He joined the Fraternity as a graduate student in music theory after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology/pre-med. from Rollins College.

Brother Mongiovi served as President of Upsilon Psi Chapter from the fall of 1994 until 1995, at which time he was elected Collegiate Province Representative of Province 13. During his second term as CPR, Brother Mongiovi served as a delegate to the 1997 National Assembly and was elected Chairman of the CPRs’ Council for the triennium 1997-2000. The 2000 National Assembly elected Brother Mongiovi to a six-year term as committeeman-at-large, at which time he was also appointed National Historian.

He currently serves in both of these positions and is also a Trustee of The Sinfonia Educational Foundation. As the originator of the Ossian Everett Mills Music Mission and author of many articles, guides, and ceremonies that are central to the Sinfonian experience, Brother Mongiovi has been instrumental in articulating the identity and the philosophy of the Fraternity and has traveled the country to speak at over 160 gatherings of Sinfonians.

Brother Mongiovi is a nationally certified and state licensed hypnotist and owner of Mind-Body Dynamics, LLC, which provides educational and therapeutic services in hypnosis, intuitive development and energy techniques. In his profession he helps others use the power of the mind to bring about positive change in their lives and transform the world around them. Brother Mongiovi currently resides in Evansville, Indiana.

Javier Betancourt, Xi Kappa (VanderCook) ‘00

Walter C. Riley, originally from Detroit, Michigan, received his B.A. in Music Education, percussion, from Howard University (2005), in Washington, D.C. He was initiated into the Zeta Iota Chapter in 1998, and served his chapter as President, Treasurer, Historian and Alumni Secretary and also served as the chartering Fraternity Education Officer to the Pi Eta Chapter at Morgan State University.

Walter was elected as the Province 27 Collegiate Province Representative in 2001 and Chairman of the CPRs’ Council in 2003. As Chairman, he has led the Council in the development of Guidelines for Documentation of Probationary Membership Programs. He has also furthered the cause of diversity awareness education through his involvement in chapter, province and national events. As Chairman of the CPRs’ Council, Walter has also planned and hosted the past three annual CPR Convocations for fraternity education, officer training, leadership development and legislative business of the Council.

Walter has worked as the Mid-Atlantic Urban College Marketing Representative for SonyBMG Music Distribution, Inc., a Product Consultant for Franklin Covey, Inc. and currently serves as the Director of Bands and Orchestra at Watkins Mill High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In his leisure time, Walter enjoys tennis, reading, writing, movies, travel, and of course, music. Walter is the father of Walter C. Riley, II and also enjoys spending time with family, friends and brothers.

Hailing from McAllen, Texas, Javier I. Betancourt is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of North Texas. He has been studying Cello for twelve years and has actively performed in the University as well as the Dallas/ Ft. Worth Metroplex. His experience includes four years of performing with the UNT Chamber Orchestra, UNT Symphony Orchestra, UNT Opera and in various chamber music ensembles. Professional engagements include performances with the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Garland Symphony, New Symphony of Arlington, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Josh Groban, recording in Ryan Cabrera’s newest album and most recently performances in the Czech Republic which he will repeat in March of 2006.

Brother Betancourt was initiated in the fall of 2000 to the Xi Kappa Chapter at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL. In the fall of 2001 Brother Betancourt transferred to the University of North Texas and is actively involved in the Gamma Theta chapter. There, he has served as Social Committee Chair, Secretary, and currently is in his second term as Vice President. He currently serves as the Collegiate Province Representative for Province 32.

Legislation for the 2006 National Convention The following list of propositions summarizes the legislative docket for consideration by the delegates to the 2006 National Assembly. The full versions of each of these propositions, including each item’s proposed language and effect on the governing documents, may be downloaded on the Convention website at www.sinfonia.org/convention, or by requesting a copy from the National Headquarters at (800) 473-2649.

PROPOSITIONS 1-15 Because no debate is anticipated on the first fifteen items, they are planned to be considered together, though individual items may be separated from this group if desired for separate consideration.

1. Concerning life leasehold on membership pins: Whether membership pins should be entrusted to members only on the basis of life leasehold rather than personal ownership in order to encourage their return or proper disposal upon a member’s death.

2. Concerning life leasehold on ritual books: Whether ritual books should be entrusted to members only on the basis of life leasehold rather than personal ownership in order to encourage their return upon a member’s death.

3. Concerning the responsibilities of membership: Whether attendance and financial obligations should be limited to collegiate members.

4. Concerning annual registration of chapters: Whether chapters should be required to register annually with their sheltering institutions as recognized campus organizations.

5. Concerning mandatory office vacancy for suspended officers: Whether vacating a suspended member’s office should be mandatory.

6. Concerning payment of per capita taxes: Whether a chapter should be exempted from paying per capita tax for a chapter member who has not paid the per capita tax to the chapter.

7. Concerning suspension of chapters for financial delinquency: Whether chapters should be placed on suspension when, after sufficient notice, they remain financially delinquent due to bounced checks, unpaid convocations tax and other such obligations.

8. Concerning chapter suspension during academic breaks: Whether the calculation of the maximum period of suspension for a chapter should exclude days occurring during summers, academic breaks and periods of closure of the sheltering institution.

9. Concerning the province governor’s duties for province workshops: Whether the requirement in the National Constitution to include specific topics at a province workshop should be eliminated.

10. Concerning restriction of authority to enter contracts: Whether authority to commit the Fraternity to contractual obligations should be limited to the National President or his designate.

11. Concerning clarification that membership is restricted to males: Whether the National Constitution should explicitly state the authority under which membership may be restricted to males.

12. Concerning the transaction of business via conference telephone: Whether the NEC should be permitted to transact business via conference telephone.

13. Concerning clarification of which national officers are elected by the National Assembly: Whether the National Constitution should explicitly state which national officers are elected by the national assembly.

PROPOSITION 21 Concerning annual reappointment of province governors: Whether province governors’ terms should be shortened to one year, subject to annual reappointment.

PROPOSITION 22 Concerning province governors’ visits: Whether a province governor must visit each colony and alumni association and conduct an official visit of each chapter in his province at least once within each triennium.

PROPOSITION 23 Concerning collegiate province representatives’ duty to file chapter visit and semi-annual reports: Whether collegiate province representatives should be required to file chapter visit and semi-annual reports.

PROPOSITION 24 Concerning province alumni coordinators: Whether the role of province alumni coordinator should be formally acknowledged in the National Constitution.

PROPOSITION 25 Increase in Initiation Fee: Whether the initiation fee should be increased from $117 to $120.

TENTATIVE PROPOSITION 26 The NEC is considering announcing a legislative proposition concerning a small increase in per capita taxes, if determined to be necessary based on analysis of the Fraternity’s financial position closer to the end of the current fiscal year. If such a proposition is necessary, notice will be given at least two months prior to the start of the National Convention, in accordance with Article XXV, Section One of the National Constitution.

In 1985, some among the Fraternity’s leadership were pushing for co-educational membership nationwide, based upon the effect of Title IX legislation and the outdated premise that the Fraternity was a professional development organization.

Delegates of the 1985 National Assembly—primarily those representing collegians—did exactly the opposite. They ended the nine-year “local option” that allowed individual chapters to initiate women (a policy which had resulted in the initiation of approximately 250 female Sinfonians) and restored language that defined the Fraternity as an all-male organization. Many believe that this moment was a turning point in Sinfonia’s reformation toward the vision of its Founder.

In 2000, in an effort to increase education and awareness of the philosophical message of the Initiation Ritual, the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly to present each newly initiated brother with his own copy of the Ritual book for his private study. Within three years, however, the prevalence of fraternal items sold on eBay introduced a new fear into the hearts of Sinfonians—that thousands of copies of our Ritual could be openly trading hands among nonSinfonians once the thousands of Sinfonians in possession of Ritual books began to pass away. The practice was reversed by the 2003 National Assembly.

In 2003, the Fraternity’s Object was restored after eighteen months of intense debate and education. Despite predictions of endless debate on the floor of the Assembly, debate took less than 20 minutes and passed by a 60-6 margin, creating a spirit of unity that has carried the Fraternity in a clearly positive direction in the ensuing three years.

News From Campus Delta Iota Western Michigan University Kalamazoo, Michigan Hail Sinfonians! Like many other chapters, the year has been a busy one for the Brothers of Delta Iota. We started the year off before classes began with recruitment activities for the upcoming probationary period.

During the band camp for the Bronco Marching Band (BMB), nearly a thousand popsicles were distributed to the very hot and sweaty marchers. The Brothers of Delta Iota continued to provide the BMB with tasty, but healthier snacks for the rest of its season. We also provided apples for the 400 participants in WMU’s annual Band Day, which gives high school band students the opportunity to work with the BMB on one of its game days.

Our probationary period started off in what is now our traditional method, with the Delta Iota Bid Night. The night featured a barbeque and “capture the flag” with the active brothers. The campus of Western Michigan University once again served as our grounds for this very fun activity. The night led to the pinning of eight fine gentlemen, seven of whom were initiated February 23rd.

During the probationary period, both the active and probationary Brothers of Delta Iota got to share in a unique opportunity for our chapter. During our spring serenades, we had the pleasure of serenading Dr. Judith Bailey, the president of Western Michigan University.

With the help of her husband, this event came as a surprise to both our probationary members and Dr. Bailey herself.

At our annual President’s Day American Musicale, we were once again able to listen to and perform great music by American composers with the sisters of the Beta Eta chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. We were joined by two of WMU’s organ students as well as Dr. Wendy Rose, WMU’s Professor of Bassoon, and Paul Austin, a horn player with the Grand Rapids Symphony. It was a fun evening for everyone, and it was great to share this with exceptionally talented individuals as these.

Before the year is out, the Brothers of Delta Iota will have the opportunity to hold a workshop with the choirs in the Hopkins Public School system. This will be the chap-

ter’s second chance to work with these choirs, which range from elementary to high school aged students. If the second time is anywhere near as fun as the first, it will be another memorable experience.

As you can see, it has been a busy and fun year for the Brothers of Delta Iota. Hopefully, the rest of the year will be as fun and successful as the beginning.

the fall we played outside of a football game to raise money for Hurricane Katrina Victims, we played outside of the student union during homecoming week to raise morale for the upcoming football game, and have been active on the IFC board with brothers being elected into positions such as fundraising chairs and philanthropy chairs. The Delta Eta chapter is excited about all of the events that we have been involved in, and look forward to a successful spring and upcoming fall semester!

Delta Eta Youngstown State University Youngstown, Ohio Greetings from Delta Eta! Well, it has definitely been a semester full of planning and new accomplishments this spring. Recently we celebrated the 150th birthday of Ossian E. Mills with a Mills Music Mission at the Park Vista Retirement community here in Youngstown, Ohio.

As we look into the remaining weeks of spring 2006, we are happy to be busy. On March 3, 2006 we will be performing in Convocation with the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota. Convocation is an hour set aside once a week for student performances. The following Tuesday we will be performing at Crestview High School singing Men of Song along with their concert band who will be playing The Sinfonians.

Along with those performances, our American Music Recital will be April 20, 2006.

We are also in the process of planning events to help raise money for a local arts center.

Students Motivated by the Arts (SMARTS) is an organization teamed up with the Dana School of Music to reach out to the community and provide classes in music, dance, and art.

As a chapter we are planning a 24-Hour Music Marathon to raise money for the center to provide new equipment and or classes. We are also going to be volunteering with community drum circles among other activities. Other activities on the agenda include a brass quintet playing at the student awards banquet in April and competing at the 54th Annual Greek Sing Competition here on campus. With the fall rapidly approaching we are also planning a marching band contest. The proceeds from this event will also benefit a music charity.

Overall, the Delta Eta chapter is in the process of fundraising and planning new events. We have been working audition days in our music school, along with working with the director of the school of music and professors to plan service projects that will directly affect what is going on in the Dana School of Music.

With all of this planning, we have also been in our first active year as members of our campus’ IFC. This has allowed us many new opportunities that we have just fallen into our hands. In

Epsilon Phi Capital University Columbus, Ohio The Epsilon Phi Chapter has seen a flurry of activity this semester with the success of several large scale projects. With both the Mills Music Mission and our annual Singing Valentine’s Day project competing for air time over the same weekend, our brothers and their respective committees spent a great deal of time making sure both activities ran smoothly during the second weekend of February.

Meeting at the conservatory with song books in hand, we drove over and performed a forty minute Mills Music Mission to the residents of the Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Bexley, Ohio. Under the direction of our chapter music director, Brother Kyle Zeuch, we sang a variety of men’s literature to several dozen guests in attendance. The chapter was assisted by the Season Pass Collegiate Quartet, who sang several songs in between the main chapter singing. Our Singing Valentine’s Day quartets also got to practice their songs in front of the Sunrise crowd as well. With the American flag waving down on us from a skylight window during our rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, one couldn’t help but feel the rest of our brothers singing with us across the nation during this Mills Music Mission. Singing Valentine’s went on to mass a very respectable sum for the chapter, and these two events combined with the leadership from every brother in the chapter served to be two of the greatest musical moments Epsilon Phi experienced this year. Singing for the wife of our past National President, Dr. William Dederer, during one of her classes at a nearby college was priceless! Epsilon Phi looks forward to a host of other activities to close out the semester, including our annual formal, a campus-wide euchre tournament and a fundraising opportunity during the conservatory’s jazz week.

News From Campus Iota Rho Chapter Missouri State University Springfield, MO Greetings from Iota Rho at the recently renamed Missouri State University! Over the past few months, the chapter has occupied itself with a variety of operations and activities.

On November 13th, Iota Rho participated in a joint-musicale featuring three fellow Missouri State University music organizations.

Throughout the course of the event, the chapter flexed its musical muscle in a range of styles. A euphonium quartet, all of which being Sinfonians, presented an impressive rendition of Pachelbel’s “Canon in D,” arranged

by Brother Casey VanBiber. The chapter would later switch flavors, as a Beach Boys ensemble pleased its audience with the classic “California Girls,” arranged by Brother Dan Weinhaus.

On December 9th, the chapter hosted a banquet to help raise money for the Missouri State University Orchestra. With the school’s transition this past August from Southwest Missouri State to Missouri State, millions of dollars have been spent across campus to replace anything that doesn’t reflect the name change. In an effort to ease the already tight pockets of the Music Department, Iota Rho raised over five hundred dollars in door proceeds to purchase new leather-bound folders with the proper engravings on them.

After roughly half of the chapter traveled to England to march with University band in the London New Year’s Day Parade, Iota Rho commemorated Ossian E. Mills’ 150th birthday by visiting the pediatrics unit of Cox South Hospital in Springfield. The group dropped in on multiple rooms on the building’s seventh floor, treating children to selections such as “Vive L’Amour,” “Dona Nobis Pacem,” and “Sinfonia Parting Song”. Iota Rho came bearing gifts as well, distributing teethers, coloring books, and crayons to the children.

The commotion within the chapter continues this May, as Iota Rho will be celebrating its 45th year as a chapter of Phi Mu Alpha. In observance of the chapter’s birthday, an entire weekend of festivities has been planned for the flocks of alumni expected to attend.

Alpha Zeta Pennsylvania State University University Park, Pennsylvania During the last weekend of January, the Alpha Zeta Chapter held its first workshop retreat. The retreat was hosted by alumni Brother Dave Roush at a cabin in DuBois, Pennsylvania. During the retreat, we listened to, as well as participated in several activities

that were designed to not only strengthen our chapter, but also our brotherhood within the chapter. Some of our guest speakers included Brother Sean Benson, alumni Brother J. Lincoln Carpenter, and Omicron Mu alumni Brother Jon Engle. Brother Benson, along with Brother Engle gave a very interesting presentation on the meaning behind the Ritual, enlightening many with facts they had never before heard.

Outside of the learning modules, we also had time to tour the area around the cabin, and plan other future activities. Not only was this retreat meant to be informative, it was also a great way for the brotherhood to escape the chaos and distractions of campus for one weekend and truly discuss issues while having a good time. Our chapter hopes to make the retreat an annual event; there was a great time had by all.

Gamma Delta Murray State University Murray, Kentucky The brothers of Gamma Delta have been hard at work with their spring semester which started on January 2nd with the production of Campus Lights. This years production was the 69th annual, which featured the classic, “How to succeed in Business without really Trying”.

The brothers of Gamma Delta, with the help of the sisters of the Iota Beta chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, assisted in the planning, technical production, and presentation of this show. This year there were close to 75 alumni in attendance along with brothers from the Sigma Psi chapter at University of Tennessee – Martin and Iota Mu at Western Kentucky University, both members of Province 15.

Campus Lights signified the beginning of a new probationary class. This is the largest class since 1997 with 20 members. The brothers of Gamma Delta are very excited and pleased to guide these men into their fulfillment of becoming a Sinfonian.

On February 14th we started our new fundraiser, Singing Valentines, which was very

successful in its first year. Across campus and across the town of Murray, brothers that had time during their day visited those people that a certain someone requested and sang two of three possible songs. The campus community is already talking about this fundraiser for the next year.

On February 18th, we observed the 150th birthday of Ossian Everett Mills by participating in a Mills Music Mission at Fern Terrace Retirement Home in Murray, Kentucky. This observance brought new meaning to many of the brothers and probationary members about the purpose of this way of instilling in people the awareness of music’s important role in the enrichment of the human spirit.

Still to come this semester are two of the bigger events that are a tradition for Gamma Delta. Spring Banquet and Dance is our yearly formal. This year we are going to be venturing to the city of St. Louis with a projected attendance of 95% of the brothers and their dates.

In the past we have gone to places such as Barkley Lodge at Lake Barkley State Resort and Louisville in conjunction with the Zeta Kappa Chapter at the University of Louisville.

Province 15’s Spring Fling will be held in an unorthodox location this year with all of the chapters going to the Montgomery Bell State Park in Dickson, Tennessee. With events planned for the advancement of the brotherhood in the province and that of the probationary members, every member stands to gain new information and experiences into how other chapters operate and interact.

We are also very excited about our new Province Governor, Mr. Adam Bernick (alumnus from Pi Delta) and the changes that he has brought and is planning to bring to the brotherhood. With all of these things, the brothers of Gamma Delta have made and are making many advances in enriching the brotherhood.

Advancing Music in America Using Chapter Matching Grants to Advance the Object The Object of this Fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit, the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students, the advancement of music in America, and a loyalty to the Alma Mater. The idea that through the advancement of men’s ideals and through the building of fraternal bonds among musicians we can advance music should not be a new concept in our lives as Sinfonians. However, we sometimes become so wrapped up in our fraternalism that we forget the purpose behind those bonds. Many of us sit in our chapters and sing songs, perform and perhaps make it out to a nursing home once in a while. Father Mills asked once, “Are we better for it?” At a bare minimum we should find ourselves joining together in song, because we desire to, not just because it’s in that ceremony we are doing tonight.

Taking a step past that, are we truly advancing music, or are we simply performing? Do we give quality concerts to those that could otherwise not afford to, attend or do we charge admission so music can be our fundraiser? Do we take music to those who can not make it out of their beds, or do we do a service project for citations? This is what we should be examining. It is not a question of whether Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is musical; it is obviously so. The greater question lies in whether or not we, as Sinfonians, are winning the world to harmony using the ideals taught to us in our ritual and our talents of music.

Chapters will often state that they feel they can not afford to do such programs, or perhaps there is not enough time to plan and organize quality events. Yet, around the country there are chapters taking advantage of their talents and the opportunities around them to accomplish their goals. One resource available to chapters that is not utilized enough is the Sinfonia Educational Foundation’s (SEF) Chapter Matching Grant program. The SEF exists to enrich the lives of collegiate Sinfonians and advance music in America. Matching Grants are “free money” which chapters can use for projects that truly fulfill the Object. Knowing this, perhaps we can not afford not to do activities that advance Sinfonia.

Chapters and provinces have utilized matching grants for many different types of projects. In 2002, Province 20 (North Carolina), received $400 to commission a new choral work by Daniel Gawthrop to commemorate the tragic events of September

11, 2001. In 2004, the Delta Tau Chapter (Oklahoma State University) received $500 for a choral conducting clinic. Most recently in 2005, the Beta Delta chapter received $1,000 to commission a new piece for the Pittsburgh State University Wind Ensemble and Choir.

Titled “Epistle To Be Left In The Earth” the piece combines the efforts of the University’s best vocal and instrumental talents. The piece was composed by fellow Sinfonian Hubert Bird.

This commission provides the University’s music department the opportunity to advance music in America through the world premiere of a new piece of musical literature. The work also crosses disciplines within the field of music education to incorporate vocal and instrumental methods.

These examples are not the end of the list of what matching grants can be used for. The only restriction is your imagination.

Yet, the question should remain “Are we better for it?” Is this expenditure of time, talent and treasure truly advancing music in America? Are we using these activities to uplift mankind, and ultimately expel pain and suffering from the world? Start planning today. Think about what activities your chapter can do to help others and advance music, and then broaden your horizons. Is simply commissioning a new piece enough? Does writing a check to a composer and singing a ditty at a university choral concert truly advance music? Are we then able to sit back, look at our creation and wash our hands of our responsibilities for the rest of the year? Being a true Sinfonian and living up to the expectations we set for ourselves in our ideals is not a casual stroll. It is a vivid, illustrious journey full of obstacles ¬– ones that make us stronger in the end. The SEF is willing to help relieve the strain of finances for quality programs, but the chapter must be willing to commit the time and energy to produce activities that will fulfill our mission.

The Sinfonia Educational Foundation is on the move, and we hope that chapters will step up to the challenge and join us in the race. If so, then surely the Fraternity will grow even more than it has in the past century, and the nation will know Phi Mu Alpha as the group of men who are true Sinfonians. “Upward is our watchword, the future is our field.”

Travel Assistance Grants To develop leadership and inspire and motivate members of our brotherhood through educational and musical experiences in a meaningful and enriching fraternal environment. ~Conclave Mission Statement Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia holds a Conclave each non-convention year for its members to learn leadership skills, diversity education, ritual education and musical opportunities. A Matter of Consistency BrothersFor the past six months I have had the opportunity to meet hundreds of brothers from all over our great nation, and among these many amazing young men I find a strange inconsistency. One would imagine that although our organization is currently represented at over 200 colleges and universities, there would still remain an element of continuity between each group, being part of the same whole. That observation led me to present my thoughts to our collegiate members, but found that one of our many elder brothers had taken up a similar charge about 83 years ago. I will refer you to his words of wisdom for your observation.

Reprinted from “The President’s Page,” The Sinfonian, May 1923 My theme for this issue is Respect the Ritual. Let me preface what I write by saying that no man speaks so freely as the one who is so ignorant that he need not be bothered with facts. Possibly I am in that condition. At least, I only hope that each of you readers will say, “This preachment does not apply to us. Let somebody else try on the shoe. It doesn’t fit here.”

Music and mysticism are closely allied because in each there is an appeal to suggestion, the calling up of something that is not definitely stated. This same idea lies at the back of all the rituals in the world, from the Roman Catholic Church to the Protestant Masonic Lodge.

It is what was in the minds of the men who devised our initiation procedure, our pledge ceremony, and our procedure for conducting all regular chapter meetings. The hurry of American life is opposed to the leisurely, stately, contemplative atmosphere of any ritual, and there is always a tendency to do away with anything that smacks of formal-

ism. But we need only to look around at certain great institutions of the world which have retained rituals to see what an effective hold they have upon their members.

How do matters stand in your chapter? Are you using the potency of symbolism, the suggestive power of dignity and stateliness? Are you calling in the use of all the arts to reenforce the objects of our fraternity? Is the dramatic appeal of our deeply moving ceremony strengthened by having the lines declaimed from memory and with appropriate interpretation, instead of being merely read, possibly in a halting way? How about music itself? Is it as carefully thought out and as skillfully introduced as in the drama on the stage, or the picture on the movie film? Are you using it as much as you should in your meetings? Are your song books in constant requisition? Have you a song leader? Is your paraphernalia impressive by its beauty? Does it all work so as to add rather than detract? Are you making the surroundings of your meeting places expressive of that harmony which in its many manifestations sounds the keynote of Sinfonia? If you are doing all these things, you are making doubly impressive any other activities you are undertaking. ~Peter W. Dykema Essentially brothers, it is my hope that our ritual, with all of its secrets, symbols and sounds, will truly become the unifying aspect of our order that it was intended to be. With a proper reverance given to it, and all of its accompanying elements, our activities as chapters will begin to reflect more the mission of our order and our bonds as brothers be strengthened.

Mills 150th Birthday Observance - An Update During the week of February 11-18, 2006, over 150 chapters, colonies and alumni associations took part in the Mills Music Mission in an effort to honor the 150th birthday of the Fraternity’s founder, Ossian E. Mills. While final statistics and information are still being calculated, it is already apparent that this event is a marked success. Look for a detailed update on how the event went in the September/October issue of The Red & Black.

Some of you may have read Ryan Ripperton’s editorial column about the quality of the Mills Music Mission in the November/December 2005 issue of The Red & Black. Dear Brother Ripperton: Thank you for writing the letter “But Would He Be Proud?” to the recent Red & Black. Recently the Gamma Epsilon Chapter at Michigan State University (where I am currently Vice President and Choral Director) and the Beta Iota chapter at Albion College (where I was initiated) teamed up for the Mills’ l50th anniversary Mills Music Mission. When I got my Red & Black for the fall, I thumbed through it as I usually do right before meeting began. When I saw Ossian’s name at the head of the article, I perked up and decided to read on. As I read the article, I couldn’t help but shake my head and say, “that’s so true” to myself. Indeed, we sing songs about how great our Fraternity is and leave more quickly than a freshman from math class. Well, not this time. I made sure that before our departure to the home that I summarized your article once more and talked about “that reaction you can get from people.”

Being a second term Music Director, 1 had always seen the Mills Music Mission as a way to practice one or two new songs out of the Red Book and revert to the old favorites out of the same book. But reading your article convinced me to go to the website and print off a few MMM Songbooks for our chapter to read out of. Heading back to

the day - we began singing. There were a total of 33 of us between the two chapters. We sounded amazing; you could tell from the reaction from the crowd. Our second to last song of the day was “The Star Spangled Banner.” As we sang, the folks, as they realized what we were singing, started standing up one by one. One gentleman started conducting. Several of them put a hand over their heart. About four bars before the end, one of the ladies was so moved by our National Anthem that she started crying. I was so moved by the audience’s reaction that I nearly started crying myself. That was “the reaction” that I had told my brothers of about an hour earlier.

After we stopped singing, for the first time instead of heading toward the door, I headed towards the audience. I got to shake the hand of everybody in the room. “This,” I said to myself, “would have made Ossian proud.” I felt like this was the first time I had truly done a Mills Music Mission, because I had never before felt quite like how I did at that moment. So thank you, Brother Ripperton, thank you for placing the issue and how to resolve it right in front of us.
