Ne risulta un rapido repertorio delle edizioni di classici al tempo disponibili, e tra le quali spiccano – oltre alle tante date alla luce nella stessa domus stephanica – quelle curate da Aldo. Riguardo al lavoro di cura editoriale, Henri aveva già espresso nelle carte precedenti considerazioni di grande interesse, criticando la abitudine al tempo diffusa di modificare se non sostituire eccellenti edizioni con lezioni testimoniate da manoscritti di più recente individuazione, o più facilmente accessibili. Il buon tipografo non deve cedere alla lusinga del facile guadagno, né risparmiare denaro nella fase di revisione e collazione dei codici, presupposto indispensabile di una seria attività editoriale. Alle carte a1r-b8v segue l’Index librorum qui ex officina Henrici Stephani hactenus prodierunt, spesso mancante negli esemplari noti della Epistola, e tra i quali sono inserite anche alcune edizioni date alle stampe dal padre Robert e «quorum paucula exemplaria apud eundem Henr. supersunt» (c. a1r). Il catalogo – la migliore risposta che Estienne può opporre ai detrattori, e specchio fedele di una straordinaria avventura editoriale – è diviso in diverse classi; tra i Grammatici Graeci sono inseriti i titoli dell’Alphabetum Graecum corredato degli scholia di Théodore de Bèze, del Ciceronianum Lexicon (vedi scheda n. 54) e del Thesaurus Graecae linguae, «brevi in lucem (Deo iuvante) proditurus» (c. b2v). II. Nel volumetto qui presentato è inoltre legata la rarissima Appendix ad catalogum librorum officinae Henrici Stephani, fascicolo di quattro carte non facente parte della edizione del 1569. Tale appendice – non compresa nella pur ricca collezione di cataloghi librari della Bibliothèque nationale de France (cfr. Catalogues des libraires 1473-1810, Paris 2006) – è databile tra la fine del 1574 e l’inizio del 1575, in quanto tra i libri già pubblicati è menzionato il Francofordiense Emporium, pubblicato nel 1574, mentre si annunciano sotto i torchi le Parodiae morales in poetarum veterum dello stesso Henri, che appariranno nel corso del 1575. «Le sort de la plupart de ces livrets d’annonces étant de promptement périr déchirés et détruits, ils finissent par constituer une série d’imprimés rares et précieux, quand les livres qu’ils énumèrent sont eux-même recommandables» (Renouard Estienne, I, p. 96). The catalogue is preceded by Henri’s open letter to the friends who had inquired about the current state of his printing shop, and more particularly about progress on his greatest project, the Greek Thesaurus, on which he had been working since the 1550s – published in 1572 (see n. 58) – and whose publication would prove financially ruinous to the publishing house. He goes into great detail about its superiority and the errors of its predecessors. He also discusses the ignorance of other printers of classical texts in contrast to the merits of Aldus, Badius Ascensius and his father. He ends with a poem addressed to Joachim Camerarius on his plans to participate in the Frankfurt Book Fair. Bound in is the exceedingly rare half-sheet supplement to the catalogue, Appendix ad catalogum librorum officinae Henrici Stephani, not present in the enormous collection of the printers catalogues of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
