How to Channel Your Inner Strength.

JUST BREATHE! I have no nails, darn it.

Current Photo Aug. 2008 by Joe Chielli, Church Street Studios

To be honest, for the past four years I’ve had no nails --- or short ones anyway. Contrary to what you might be thinking, my lack of nail growth is not attributed to an active lifestyle peppered with sports. It’s not linked to any hereditary Vitamin E deficiencies. It’s not even deliberate due to the handling of my one-year-old daughter’s delicate little body. You see, for the past four years I’ve been obsessing (bi-annually) over planning and implementing our now (thankfully) popular PhillyFIT Bashes. I’ve never been one for diva nails, (although my toe nails are my pride and joy, blinged out with graphics, gems and all). But every now and then, when I’m feeling ultra-girly for a special evening, I look down with dismay. For years now, my anxiety and my fixation with perfection around this event has manifested itself in snacking on the tips of my fingers. It’s okay (no calories), although I don’t recommend it. When I’m done gnawing on my nails, sometimes I move onto Lloyd’s. Geez, that guy’ll do anything for me! I’m kidding, of course. The next Bash is Sunday November 30th, and for once, I’m not obsessing over whether I serve Turkey or To-furkey. OK, not completely true either, but I’m not quite as nutty as my usual pre-Bash days. I just hope that I’m not the “turkey.” My gut tells me that I will have a lot to be thankful for. It’s amazing to me that we’ll have over eighty vendors and I can’t wait to hear the jazzy, Klemmer-Hill Reid Band, again. Yep, they totally rock, I mean jazz.

Let me explain I never wanted to be Joe party planner. Don’t get me wrong, planning a party is exhilarating and fun, but one of this size and twice a year-not much fun. Well, I take that back. It’s fun after it’s all over. Admittedly, organizing events, and all the hoopla that surrounds them, just isn’t my true calling. It’s kind of comical that I pull it off. If you saw my office you’d never believe I was capable. (Although, ask me where every tiny paper clip is and I can show you, it’s totally organized to me!) From selling the idea to potential vendors and getting the message across to the public, to hiring talent and securing the venue, I honestly just rely on my own common sense and intuition as well as the empathetic, kind-hearted guidance and suggestions of the (now very large) PhillyFIT volunteer family. I became an event organizer by default. I’ve never been one for egocentrism, control or notoriety. However, I have always been a proponent of following my heart, by quietly asking: “What’s the worst that could happen?” Back in 2000, I had a vision. I knew I had to connect “the dots,” but wasn’t sure how to draw the lines. After I launched the magazine, people said “Wow, I bet you know EVERYBODY in the industry, I wish I had YOUR connections!” No, this isn’t because they thought I was super woman or something, most folks were smart enough to realize that a magazine often acts as a HUB for local communities, and PhillyFIT was well on its way to following that idea. But getting from point A to point B seemed unbelievably challenging. Unlike an Olympic event competition, the hurdles I had to jump over where mental, not physical. If I had to give those high hurdles names I’d call them: “Are you Crazy?”, “But you’ve never done this!” and “What if?” These types of titles have shown up before in my life so they by no means are strangers to me.

Nike’s Right Their mantra, “Just Do it,” really comes into play here. Funny thing is the more you just do it, the more you want to do it (get your mind out of the gutter). If you look the beast in the eye once, it gets easier the next time, and the time after that. My mother gave me 8 I PhillyFIT

some pretty simple advice one day, when my nails were starting to go from their “Okay” status to a little short again. “Just breathe, Jami,” she said. You know, that mother of mine, from time to time, belts out one-liners that really hit home. Now, I know that’s not original advice, nor stellar or even mind blowing. Truth be told, I remember sitting in my chair and literally breathJami and husband Lloyd at the ing slowly; in and out, in and 4th PhillyFIT BASH out. To this day, whenever I feel overwhelmed with all of the details that go into planning the Bash (when fixated nail biting leads to near hyperventilation), I breathe in and out, in and out. I don’t know if it’s oxygen to the brain, or just repetition allowing me to focus, but it does the trick. At first, the Bash was just a networking party, a way to make face-to-face connections within the local fitness arena (it was like a living, breathing MySpace page). All I wanted to do was bring people together who had a common interest, a common goal and a desire to spread that passion. I was never in it for the money; actually, I was happy to just break even. I still refuse to raise admittance fees (especially during these strange economic times). I’m proud admittance fees have been just $5.00 since 2000. It’s free for kids under five. Now that my own family has grown, I’m constantly in search of fun, family things we can all enjoy. I’m sure that I’m not alone.

Happy Accidents and Lessons Learned The night before a Bash, I’m so sick I can’t even describe it. It’s worse than morning sickness, worse than seasickness. It’s an omnipresent gripping feeling that’s half euphoric, half panicked and all whattheheckdidigetmyselfinto? To calm myself down, I close my eyes and derive strength from past experiences. For example, during the fourth Bash, huge, billowy, black clouds rolled in about three hours into the event. The wind howled and angry gusts blew! The place cleared out…or so it seemed. The regular BASHERS stayed, and ended up making it a party to talk about anyway! I’m always amazed at how many connections are made at The Bash. Chuck Woolery would be proud. Most PhillyFIT readers know that I met (my) Lloyd at the second Bash (the best happy accident ever) and others have told me that they’ve connected with others that share similar passions and have remained friendly. This is what I focus on when my nerves get the best of me. I love being that connector – that person who has the will, the mouth and the heart to just make it happen. Okay, that loony person who has the courageous balls to try. One time I was on stage with a performer and we were talking to the crowd, trying to get their attention for something special about to happen. We just couldn’t get the audience to listen to us. I thought we totally bombed in a bad way. Actually, it turned out; the darn speakers weren’t working, unbeknownst to us! At the time, we couldn’t figure out why no one was looking up! Yeah, now I’m the girl running around like a nut-head doing sound checks all day long. And at our fifth Bash, I had a um, well, a ‘difficult’ vendor situation should I say. Let me get on the record

first, this was our one and only “negative” situation we’ve encountered thus far. They signed up for eight booths, yep... that’s right! But with big purchases often come the big demands. They wanted everything from prime placement, which we had to go over for hours, more than once, but they even wanted me to bring special matting for them to put their “stuff” on. Then, much to my sheer amazement, they didn’t show up! They left a gaping hole in the prime area of the fifth Bash, and we had to scramble like nut heads (yet again) to fix that as folks were pouring in the doors!

“What If’s” Are Fictitious Villains in Your Mind What if it pours? What if my vendors cancel or they’re unhappy? What if no one shows up for G-d’s sake! What if the event is “slow?” What if the power goes out? What if it’s just not fun? What if one of the performers or an attendee gets hurt? Believe it or not, these villains make an appearance twice a year. Yep, they just never go away. And the little suckers always make their way to my stomach (a.k.a. the stress chamber). I woke at 4:00 a.m. before the last Bash, to find it POURING RAIN and I was left physically doubled-over with pain. Ridiculous, right? I mean I can’t believe that this event (when it is outdoors) is subject to the weather Demons too! Yes, I am happy to say this upcoming one IS indoors---phew! You’d think that with all the successful Bashes, I’d be a pro. Wrong! Even with all of the careers that were launched, all the romances that have commenced, all of the life-altering fitness bells that have gone off in the minds of people everywhere, you’d think I’d be past the fears, past the worry. Nope! Albeit, they’ve gotten less severe over the years. I no longer “bash” myself into a nauseous frenzy due in large part to the stories that people send me. I’m so touched by the letters sent by complete strangers. From the mother whose seven-year-old son “came out of his shell” during a Karate expo to the ninetyyear-old man that adopted a dog during the Bash and kicked loneliness for good. To me, the Bash is about YOU, the readers and advertisers. It’s about connectivity. It’s my small way to give back and pay it forward. It’s really the magazine’s philosophy played out in 3-D. The Bash brings my vision to life, brings it full circle and makes it all worthwhile. It’s a true mishmash of young and old, attracting people of all different cultures and backgrounds. I love the diversity aspect of it and love watching the new handshakes and contagious smiles as I walk through the aisles. Year after year, I notice that the Bash brings down sociological walls. Inhibitions go out the window, my own silly “what if’s” follow and, subsequently, my stomach-invading heebie-jeebies slowly fade.

Rated “Gee!” At the conclusion of each Bash I get introspectively pensive. “Gee, now I know why I do this twice a year,” I think quietly to myself. This revelation always seems new, no matter how many Bashes I’ve facilitated. Even through the blood, sweat, tears, lost sleep and nervous breakdowns, I still come back to you, the PhillyFIT community. Keeping the Bash fun and relevant for all family members has been a mission year after year. I’m proud that this “Gee” rated event is entertaining for people of all ages. From hip-hop shows to new break-dance performances, football

extravaganzas (with a few former Eagles players joining us this upcoming Bash), beauty makeovers, non-stop workout demos for the home workout wanna-be to the gym rat, de-stressing techniques like massage and yoga. Miss Lisa’s musical fitness shows for kids always get smiles and healthy, live cooking demos from the pro’s themselves, (Christina and Robert Pirello), ensures there truly is something for everyone. I’m particularly proud of our blood drive with the American Red Cross and our ongoing commitment to healthy pets and adoption of loveable pets in need of a loving home. The Bash is about smelling, seeing, tasting, dancing, meeting and just having fun in an atmosphere where there are no “hard-sells.” I’m always thrilled to see seniors well represented at the Bash. They are always up and dancing --Jitter Bugging, or something. We don’t even know what dance they’re doing half the time. But it’s so heartwarming to watch and it’s contagious. Pretty soon everyone is on their feet. One time we had an older woman show up wearing exercise skis (Think Jack LaLanne meets Suzy Chapstick). She skied around the entire event like we were in Colorado; as if it was quite normal to get around that way.

ment. My work in Colon Hydrotherapy is a thousand-year-old process, but people without information are the same people who remain afraid to ask questions, investigate the procedure and, most importantly they NEVER get to meet the practitioners. I realized that keeping your business or specialty a secret is quite self-limiting and counter-productive.”

I do like to push the envelope. We’ve had a (fully clothed) pole (fitness) dancing exhibit. We’ve had shirtless Men-of-the-Cave. There’s always a nice balance of informative booths and entertaining demonstrations. Balance is the key. Making sure that everyone has a great time is my main mission. I never want people to think that the Bash is only for FIT people, it’s SO NOT! It’s for people who want to learn what steps they can take to start their fitness journey. It’s for pro athletes looking to meet others of like mind, and also for people who like to walk around their neighborhood or fitness folks who are trying to simply up-theirgame like me. It’s for trainers and trainees, for people looking for jobs, those in search of new hires to run their clubs. It’s for those people just looking to dip their toe in or those who swim a hundred laps. That’s the beauty of it.

Sometimes I think It’s All Going to the Dogs – But I’m Okay with That!

Education Starts Here Sometimes I lose sight of things. I get hung up in the details, the music selection, and the beverage choices. I even forget how cool it is to connect with vendors and educators in a free-spirited, non-intimidating, non-committal way. I was reminded of this by Lynn Johnson of WELL BEING in Aston, PA who took the time to write her personal point-of-view: “The morning of the seventh Bash, the sky was gloomy and so was I until I got to the BASH! The HIGH ENERGY emitted by the vendors and attendees was inspiring. I made some of my best business contacts in months that day. WOW! The BASH isn’t just a place to meet people who are already into health or on a kick; you can really meet folks who are seeking an answer to change their lives. I cut back on my brochure count and handouts because of the dismal sky. What a fool I was. I ran out of brochures, handouts, healthy chocolate...It’s not just another community fair...It’s a draw that I didn’t expect. I’ll be prepared in the future! I have found that through this venue, I am changed. So many more people have found out about me. I started thinking that the service I perform is unique. The Bash gave me the opportunity to talk about my work in a truly up-beat environ10 I PhillyFIT

Creating an environment where people can ask questions and get answers in a comfortable, approachable manner is so important to me. The Bash isn’t only about sit-ups or push-ups; it’s actually the biggest party you’ve ever seen, yet totally educational. It’s about seeking solutions to chronic ailments and also conquering your inner fears and mapping out a plan towards a healthier you—in a safe, friendly (very upbeat) venue. I couldn’t be more proud of the mix of vendors that continually participate. Producing an atmosphere where these types of exchanges happen (where they’ve never been able to before) is very rewarding. I learn something new at every single Bash and I know that others do too. Looking good and feeling good go hand-in-hand. The Bash is the ultimate way to get closer to both!

When I first started doing the Bashes, it became obvious that the event itself could become a vessel for goodwill. I’ve always been crazy about animals and animal rights. I swear, in my next lifetime (or this one if my dreams come true), I’m going to open the biggest and best animal rescue and rehab center that you’ve ever seen! I’m a sucker for a Saint Bernard and I never met a Labordoodle I didn’t like. Supporting WAGS Rescue, the SPCA and other organizations is now a big part of the Bash’s ongoing efforts. The benefit to the rescued animals is immeasurable and the happiness they bring their new owners makes me feel so good. Carol Klein, a PhillyFIT reader and multiple Bash participant, articulates it best below. I encourage everyone to come with an open heart and an open mind. Think about adopting a furry friend in need! “My aerobics class performed a demonstration at the PhillyFIT Bash in May, 2007. We had a great time, and afterwards I was thrilled to see the WAGS Rescue Group there with a bunch of dogs available for adoption. My dog had recently passed away, and talking to the WAGS volunteers and petting the dogs was just the medicine I needed. I spent some time with a little two-yearold rat terrier named “Bridgette” that needed a home, and couldn’t get her off my mind after I left. I completed the WAGS application and interview process. In a few weeks Bridgette came home to live with us! She has been a great addition to our family. It was so nice to have a dog that was past the puppy stage – very well trained and housebroken. I give credit for her training to her former WAGS foster home. They were also very honest about her personality, both good and not-so-good traits, and they were deeply concerned that she was matched with the right home. We had a great experience with WAGS, and we will definitely contact them when we are looking for another dog to love!”

Come talk to me! Instead of running around like a chicken with its head cut off (yuck!), this year, I’m staying put. That’s right! My butt will be parked in a comfy seat at the PhillyFIT booth. I want to get to know our readers better. Please reach out to me and tell me about your nail-biting situations, your hurdles and victories – big or small. My philosophy is always to be learning, growing and engaging in continual improvement. I believe in Kaizen (which is not a chair at Ikea!). Kaizen is the Japanese philosophy of continual improvement or the notion that every process can and should be continually evaluated and improved in terms of time required, resources used, resultant quality, and other aspects relevant to the process. When applied to the workplace, Kaizen means continuing improvement involving everyone – managers and workers alike. However, it’s not limited to the workplace. It also means continuing improvement in ones personal life, home life and social life. I am looking to do a story on all of you -- the attendees I meet at the upcoming 8th BASH. The goal: to publish a story on how much in common we all really do have and how we individually practice Kaizen. If you’re looking to spearhead a Bash of sorts in your world, take it from me – don’t copy what others do. Please. You’ll potentially start your process burning bridges, never a good way to launch something great. Go COUNTER CLOCKWISE. For example, I picked a day of the week that no one picks –Sunday. The skeptics said “You’re crazy! No one will come. Church, family time….” Well, turns out everyone comes on a Sunday! Well, whaddiyaknow! The Bash is a perfect post-church, pre-spaghetti dinner activity (use whole wheat pasta people!). I decided to make it only four hours (11:00 – 3:00). Everyone said that duration was too short. Turns out, it was perfect, not too long or too short. It’s a hell of a four-hour slam of good fun with zero dead time, and nil wasted time for the vendors, a priority of mine. I say experiment in your own style. That’s how it works. Really! And the crowd can feel it. Do it for the right reasons. Don’t make it about money. Make it about your passion and follow your heart. Gratification is priceless. Make sure YOUR event is a win/win for everyone, and I mean, each and every person (and pet). It’s the only way things work in life. (you knew I had to slip a Jami-ism in this Pub Page somewhere, didn’t you?) If you are paying attention to my continual efforts to share my thoughts with you through my Pub Pages, give 120 percent and expect half of that back. Never give equal or less, give more than you can imagine. You’ll find that how you measure your success will change and so will you. For the better! Okay, here’s my big finish! Please be sure to save the date of Sunday, Nov. 30th. It’s being held this time at the Bucks County Community College, from 11:00 – 3:00. We have a 5k/1 Mile Family Fun Run happening just prior to it’s opening. Come party at the 8th Annual PhillyFIT BASH. It’s everything health and fitness you can imagine (for the entire family!). If you’re a past Basher, come back! There are lots of new things and special guests due to stop by for a visit and special treats throughout the afternoon! For more informa-

tion please visit our website at www.phillyfit.com. By the way, there is going to be unbelievable holiday shopping there so make your list and check it twice. Black Friday is so yesterday, go for PhillyFIT Sunday instead. Your gift receivers will thank you, I promise.

Conquer your fears without biting your nails! Ask yourself: “What’s the worst that can happen?” Write down a few possible scenarios and then rate them on a scale: Not likely through to very likely. The reality is that the majority of your fears are not very likely to happen. Just facing them on paper can be quite cathartic.

Bounce your secret fears against your BFF or significant other Don’t obsess alone. Talk to someone who knows you well – better than you might even know yourself. Chances are that some positive chat over good food and margarita will do the trick. Talk through the things that keep you up at night, (well maybe not everything) that can help you get past your obstacles!

Read relevant biographies Get your butt to the library and read the biographies of people who have accomplished similar and larger goals. Get inspired by the way they rose from defeats and learn from their mistakes. Perhaps their dreams aren’t necessarily your dreams, but everyone has to start somewhere. Everyone has fears at the beginning. Learning how others fought their own negativity or those darn pessimists is uplifting and can truly make those sparks stay alive in your heart.

Give yourself deadlines That’s right. Treat your dream like a project. Plot “must-dos” on paper and set deadlines for yourself. For example, when to finish a business plan, when to approach a loan officer, call Jane Doe for an informational interview. A real life “to do” list will help with procrastination (procrastination is how fear manifests itself sometimes).

Set realistic expectations Don’t put yourself under unnecessary stress. If you want to launch a business, make sure you’ve built in time for research. Don’t rush the process if you don’t have to. I’ve been-there-had-to-do-that….It’s a long life. Setting yourself up to fail or sabotaging yourself is more common than you think. Take baby steps, but make them victorious ones! Celebrate even small progress.

Network via Social Media Twitter about your passions and “follow” those with similar passions. Start a facebook group or your own personal blog! It’s easy and free.

Don’t underestimate “The Little Train that Could” I swear I stood in front of the mirror and told myself that I was going to organize these Bashes and make them a huge success year after year. I actually practiced saying that. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can really works. (Think I’ve been raising kids too long?) Just get used to the idea of responsibility and achievement. Saying it out loud makes you feel like you actually OWN your dream or your goal and makes the leap a little less intimidating. “If it looks like a parade, sounds like a parade, then heck, it’s a freakin’ parade!”

Role Play Another idea is to role-play. Ask a friend to pretend that he/she is a reporter and let them pretend to interview you after you launched. This cements your idea into reality. My pal made a microphone out of a paper towel tube and asked me “Jami, your first Bash was a success, what do you have in store for us next?” We laughed, I can be so silly at times we both realized. But it really got me thinking about the future, and the impact that one person can make on many other people. I still love the quote I shared with you last month, “To the world, you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world.”

Ask for help It’s surprising how people, even strangers, want to help you achieve your goals. By and large, everyone has hopes and dreams of some sort and can relate to others who are trying to grab life’s brass ring. Have a question? Go ask someone who has actually been there already. If you want to open a flower shop, interview your local flower shop owner. People love to talk about themselves and chances are they’d be flattered that you went to them and hold them in high regard. Try it!

letterstothepublisher Hi Jami, PhillyFIT Magazine has inspired me. I put myself on an improvement program, to mentally and physically bring out the best in me thanks to you guys! To this date, I have lost 52 pounds and am currently looking into becoming a personal trainer. Michael Giacapuzzi (a featured success story in the December issue) spoke with me extensively about BMI and after looking at his pic’s and what he's done… wow, I feel very lucky. If you know Michael, please tell him Ang says hello, and I hope Giovanni is well too. Thanks to all of you at PhillyFIT, I am looking forward to the attending your next BASH! Take Care, Ang Hi Jami, I was looking at your site and saw all the great things you are doing. You are definitely a woman who is prominently connected in the community as well as someone who knows how to get things done! With Gratitude, Brittany T. Policastro One World Many Hearts - Founder Hi Jami, My name is Dina, I am 32 yrs. old and a mother of three beautiful children. I wanted to tell you that I admire you in so many ways. I read your magazine all the time. You have really inspired me to get off my fat a$$ and try to lose this baby fat! Well, can I just tell you that it’s been four years that my baby was born and I have no excuse as to why I still have this extra body fat with me. I have tried sooooooo many diets and failed. I know that I don't excercise (and yeah, that might be my answer to everything), but it’s really hard, as a mother working a full time job and taking care of three kids ages, 12, 8, 4. I read your magazines and I say to myself “WOW, if Jami can do it, so can I.” You look awesome after having three children. I don't know how you do it. But, if you have any pointers PLEASE share them with me. I have been thinking about gastric-bybass, but part of

me says I can fix the problem on my own. It’s all in the middle, which you and I know it's the hardest part of the body to lose fat. Please if you have any suggestions on how I can loose weight or any pointers how I might begin, please feel free to share them with me. I also just want you to know that you are a very amazing person, by reading your magazines every month, it seems like you have been through ups in downs in your lifetime but you have made it through all and you’re still going strong. God Bless, Dina NOTE TO READERS: Feel free to respond with some tips for our reader here! Jami, I love your magazine! It is so well done! Nice job! This is one fine magazine! And I read a ton of them: Shape, Fitness, Muscle and Fitness, MetroRace Forum, etc., etc. Where can it be picked up? I know you leave it at places all over the city, but where? Thank you so much! Kim Angle NOTE TO READERS: We are in 2,000 locations, in four counties, please call us to find out where near you! Jami “LOVED” the Publisher's Page in the current (Sept/Oct) issue...good stuff...top shelf! Debbie - The Tanning CLub THANKS PhillyFIT, another great issue (Sept./Oct.) just arrived. This past Labor Day weekend we renovated out entire 5,000 square foot lobby and reception corridor. Part of this change was removing about 15 newspapers and periodicals, and placing them in the rear of our facility. Only one publication will continue to "greet" our 4,000 members when they check-in at Center City's most popular fitness center: PHILLY FIT. We made this decision because your magazine delivers quality, interesting health and fitness information in an entertaining style that our members tell us they really enjoy. This makes me, as the owner of 12th Street

Gym and an advertiser in your publication, very happy! RICK PIPER PhillyFIT, Our staff is very impressed with the content of your magazine, and as part of the fitness community, we appreciate your providing fitness minded people with a great publication. Justin Singleton | Community Relations Coordinator Velocity Sports Performance 2005 Route 70 East | Cherry Hill, NJ Dear Jami, I find you completely inspiring! I love reading your editorials and have been so amazed by the way you welcome us (the world) into your private life. You are a gift to us all. I am very unfit, but find your words and works particularly motivational. Thank you again for reaching out to us & our kids. Warmly, Kim Dipiazza, Reinhold, PA. Hi Jami, I just wanted to take the time to Thank You for your vision…the PhillyFIT Bash is a unique event and brings together all things fitness under one roof. I can't tell you how much I learn through attending your functions (this year's will be my 4th…from doctors to fashion, from vitamins to the latest in health concentrates…what a great time! More importantly…your addition of the Pet related programs has changed my life. Last year I attended your event with my daughter…we drove from New Jersey to attend because there is nothing like your 'Bash' where we live. We had been talking about getting a dog but were not sure it was the right time. When we arrived and saw the pet adoption program, it sparked some real interest in adopting…then we saw Jonah…a puppy from Mississippi, a Black Lab and whatever mix…that sealed it! We went through the process (which was easy and painless) and made the calls to my fiancé at home (she bought in

because I said 'if we are considering getting a dog, this is it')…she agreed. We left there with the greatest addition to our family since my children were born. Jonah is now a 98 pound puppy (getting close to two years old) and has changed the dynamics of our family. He is always happy, always loved, always loving, plays with everyone he meets…and is such a great joy to us. Thank you for aligning the stars in your vision and bringing that aspect of the business within the PhillyFIT umbrella…I can never repay you for all that you have done for us! We are now talking about another adoption and will be bringing Jonah to the next Bash…can lightning strike twice…with you all it can! My mother owns the Taste of Philly Soft Pretzel Bakery on the corner of Second Street Pike and Knowles avenue. I am an avid reader of PhillyFIT, being that it is distributed at my gym, the 12th street gym in Philadelphia. I just want to tell you that what you are doing for the city and the nation hopefully is wonderful. I know that you are a well established magazine, congrats! Hi Jami! I want to congratulate you on producing what I consider the Top Fitness Magazines in the Philly area. Awesome job! How to Have a Without Ending Up In the RED I don’t know about you folks, but I have this nice little, “wrapping station,” set up on a high shelf in my laundry room. This “area”has long been one of my husband’s and my “battles,” of sorts. He says, “If that darn box falls on me one more time, I’m gonna ——! And, why can’t we just put Daniel’s diapers there with a change of clothes.” But, what he doesn’t understand, or deal with, is the endless birthday parties, celebrations, and the like, that require a continual need for gift bags, stickers, tissue paper, cards, etc. If only he knew how much money I have saved over the years not buying those pricey gift bags and wrapping paper. Heck, have you ever bought the stuff from your neighbor’s kids’ fundraising efforts? Just this little idea can save you oodles of money over the course of a year. The “Adjustment” No, I am not talking about your visit to the chiropractor. I am talking about a credit adjustment for retail purchases that you have made already. It goes like this. You just made a purchase at one of your favorite stores, like Target or Kohl’s. They typically have a ten-to-fourteen day adjustment period that you may have heard about, but never took advantage of this savings. Say you are at the store within their time period and you notice that the six items you purchased last week have gone on sale. If you take your receipt to customer service, they will give you the credit right there on the spot in the form of your original payment. So, how to keep track of it? Well, you don’t need a highly sophisticated system like my refrigerator magnet, but a simple coupon file works wonders. I’ll admit, this is a “new way of thinking,” but what a payoff it is to have a clerk hand you back fifty bucks. Another “one time courtesy” you can take advantage of is if you have ever had a check returned for insufficient funds. This time of year can be especially difficult with all of the gifts we need to buy. If you have been caught in that web and gotten that dreaded notice from your bank that they have withdrawn the thirty or so dollars from your account, give your financial institution a call and ask if they would, “As a one time courtesy,” reverse the charges. Remember, attitude is important, so have a “please help” voice attached to that phone call. Even if this happens to you a couple of times a year, asking for a reversal of those charges is not a lot to ask of your bank, as long as your history of payment is good with them.

Nordstrom also has this thing about tissue paper, of which I call the tissue paper effect, (tpe). If you have ever bought anything from Nordstrom, then you know what I am talking about. The tpe, is a little hard to resist. Why, it looks so pretty and all, but geez, enough trees already. Even if their tissue paper is recycled, that small thing has a big impact on our environment. Don’t hesitate to tell the clerk, I don’t need the paper, or that one sheet will do, thank you! And, if they offer you a box, make sure you’ll actually use it and not just throw it out. Arts & Crafts All of the parents out there know about this. It starts in preschool, ya know, the endless arrival of arts and crafts in little

Johnny’s backpack. What an awesome gift for grandparents, godparents, and close friends. Why not take one of the Picasso’s and buy a nice frame for it? I don’t think I have ever been to Kohl’s where I didn’t see a sale sign in the frame department. Or, splurge a little, and still save a bundle, by having the art work custom framed. Michael’s stores always have coupons in the paper for fifty percent off custom framing. It’s true; you won’t have to worry about the recipient getting the same gift again. No Money, No Ticket Do you remember this line from “Frosty the Snowman” when little Wendy was trying to help Frosty get back to the North Pole? This is a classic at my home. We joke with this line and really get a good giggle. NO MONEY, NO TICKET! But, in real life, it really is no laughing matter. If you cannot pay cash for the item, don’t buy it. Yes, there are always exceptions to the rule. Perhaps, the breadwinner in your family lost their job and you need food. But, in the case of buying gifts for the holidays, if you can’t afford it, figure out another gift. Perhaps, this is why the average American family carries a $10,000 balance on their credit card. Have you ever thought of just “giving the spirit of the Holidays” to each other? I realize the kids do not understand this and want and expect their toys, as they should. But, in my family, about five years ago, this is exactly what we did. The children received gifs, but the adults do not. It is that simple. We share a wonderful meal together and talk about all of the things for which we are thankful. The celebration really is about the children!

The Tissue Paper Effect (tpe) Without sounding pretentious, I have to admit that Nordstrom is one of my favorite stores. No, I can’t afford to pay full price, but if I really have to have something, I’ll buy it. But, I will also make sure I am waiting at their doors the day of their sale. (Okay, well that may be an exaggeration, but I do have an eagle eye when it comes to such important events.) They too have a fourteen day adjustment period, but if you ask nicely for a “One time courtesy adjustment,” most likely, you’ll get it. Heck, sometimes three months just goes by before you have a chance to pop back in there. Don’t worry, just ask. I’ll admit it, this does get easier the more practice you get; and, I am sure you are a good customer like I am. Maybe we don’t spend three million dollars a year on clothes like some celebrities, but we may spend three hundred dollars; and to us, we are good customers.

So, here’s one of the “secrets” I learned about recently. There are tons of sites for savings. Just type in “coupons” or “retail coupons;” or, if you are shopping at Pottery Barn Kids, type in “Pottery Barn Kids coupons” into your search engine. Here you will find everything from free shipping to ninety-nine cent shipping, or fifteen percent off your total order. Yes, this is new thinking for a lot of you, but it’s such a scream to do. Just Do It ---Yard Sale that is How many of you feel the anxiety build as birthdays, and the holidays, edge ever closer? I know I do. Not because of finances, but because I don’t know where the heck I am going to stash any more toys without my house being a complete fire hazard. If I have to pick up one more piece of Mr. Potato Head and all of his pieces from the lovely “JUMBO PACK” my sister-inlaw gave me, I AM GONNA LOSE IT! Ya gotta love the “not suitable for under age two” disclaimer on the box, of which is filled with pieces that are complete choking hazards for my twoand-a-half year old, arghhhh. Lucky for me, I have a great team of help. The first person on that team is Sandy, a dear friend of twenty-five years, who started cleaning for me once a month, and who I am ever indebted too. Countless times I have called her, by cell, of course, (who can wait till she actually gets home) and asked if she saw the “Thomas Train with the winter scarf,” or the one armed “Bob the Builder” character, or golly be, the plastic trumpet with all of its color washed away. I must have saved at least forty melt-downs because of the invention of cellular phones. Second on my team is my beloved sister, Wendy. She is my Feng Shui Expert. Feng Shui, is the study of environmental balance: a Chinese system that studies people’s relationships to their environment, especially their home or workspace, in order to achieve maximum harmony with the spiritual forces believed to influence all places. Wendy knows, and has taught me how “clutter in the home, clutters our brain.” Simple really! Think about how you feel when you really clean something up, or organize something. You know that feeling I am talking about, that exhilarating feeling. You actually feel the space in your head “open.” I get to hear about all my clutter at least once a week when she comes over to see the kids and make her way through my house like a cyclone. Only, in her case, she whizzes through my house and straightens everything up quicker than a genie. I still shake my head in amazement at how she does this.

All of this got me to thinking about what to do with all of the excess toys, stuff, and all of the clutter we all have, but don’t know what to do with. Why not have a yard sale? So what if the planned day is forecasted to have a wind chill of six degrees. Find an old steel can, make that bon fire you have talked about forever, and pick up those marshmallows (organic, of course) on your shopping trip. Make a family day of this event. What a great way to put into action “out with the old, in with the new,”

I guess that’s why they are called the Millionaire’s Next Door. I guess one person’s trash really is another persons treasure.

Many people have heard about Tai Chi. They hear of its many health benefits, meditative aspects, martial prowess, and growing popularity; they may entertain the thought of trying to find a class in their area. This is where the issue of finding the right teacher can often begin. Much has been written regarding the ancient art of Tai Chi. Books have been authored which are cryptic, difficult to understand, or that miss the mark completely. Many teachers only add to this confusion by propagating the idea that there are “secrets” to Tai Chi; secrets that only a select few are privy. There have been films produced that chronicle people who study these arts amassing supernatural powers, a romantic and misguided idea. There are multitudes of studies published showing the everincreasing list of illnesses that Tai Chi can supposedly cure. With all of this, the true martial art, the true health benefits, the true magic of Tai Chi gets lost. Chuan is a traditional martial art and health exercise based on Taoist philosophy. The main focus of this philosophy is on yin/yang harmony ― the balance of opposing forces ― and wuwei (pronounced wu-way), literally translated as “not doing.” At this point, we get back to the original problem of mystification; the ideas are pretty and the paradox is clever, but how does it help you, the seeker? The idea of harmony is simple enough to understand, even on the most basic level. The idea of homeostasis helps to explain it. Everything in nature --- our body, the environment --- strives to 18 I PhillyFIT

move towards a state of balance. If anything is too heavily on one side or the other, changes will occur to bring the situation back into balance. Heart rate will increase to compensate for workload, the body will heat itself with fever to destroy a foreign invader, insulin will be produced to help process an increased level of glucose. With this said, so much of our daily life is consumed by “Yangbiased” (or actively doing) thoughts. We drive our car, not realizing that the car is moving us at sixty-five miles per hour. We drink a glass of water, not realizing the millions of processes that must happen in order for us to perform that simple action. Our heart beats and our lungs breathe without our directing them to do so. Through the study of Tai Chi, we learn to bring our awareness to these less noticed phenomena, the Yin aspects of life, thereby reducing stress response, effecting deeper relaxation and bringing about balance. The idea of wuwei is directly related to this. The literal translation is “not doing,” from the Chinese term wei wuwei ―“doing by not doing.” This is a beautiful paradox that does nothing to explain itself to someone who has not experienced it. The essence of wuwei is not experienced as “doing nothing,” but rather doing less to achieve more. As we read in the previous section, so much of our lives are out of our immediate control, even within our own bodies; why attempt to control that which cannot be controlled?

September/October 2008 I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfitmagazine.com

Optimal action through less interfering action: But how does this relate to Tai Chi, the martial art and health exercise? Most people are familiar with the slow-motion routines performed in parks and town squares, sometimes with hundreds of participants. This is the basic, and most important, tool of Tai Chi. The slow-motion routines are known as forms, or taolu. Through the practice of these, and adherence to the basic principles, the student develops a greater awareness of the “here and now” as well as effecting deep relaxation in body and mind, greater balance and supple musculature. With this knowledge, the principles can be brought into daily living. Through this process, the health benefits become evident. As the body achieves deeper and deeper states of relaxation, it can operate in a more natural and healthy way. This can be observed through physiological changes including decreased blood pressure, decreased stress response, improved balance, improved cardiopulmonary functioning, etc. It is not through some supernatural event, but rather through allowing the body to function optimally and in its most natural state.

It is from this state of relaxation and quietness that the martial abilities of Tai Chi flow. Martial artists, regardless of style, will agree that true combat prowess comes not from superior techniques, but rather superior attributes, or ways of being. By training your body to move more freely, in a more natural state, your reaction to any stimulus will be quicker, more efficient, and more appropriate. Some confusion may arise regarding the study of the martial component of Tai Chi. Many people seek the purported health benefits and the relaxation that Tai Chi provides, rather than a system of self-defense. But it is through the knowledge of the martial components and the understanding of the principles involved that the other benefits can be fully realized. So how does one find the proper teacher to lead them through this self-discovery? There are several key points to look for. They are as follows:

1) Can the teacher trace their lineage back to the founders of the styles (Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu/Hao, or Sun)? Remember, Tai Chi is a traditional art. Without the proper foundation, the martial abilities and health benefits can never be fully realized. There are no shortcuts in life.

2) Can the teacher explain things in traditional terms as well as in terms that are understandable and scientifically-based? As a famous Tai Chi teacher once remarked, “There are no secrets,” any teacher who instructs as if there are secrets may not fully understand the concepts they are teaching.

3) Does the teacher abide by their own principles and instructions within Tai Chi? An instructor who teaches one thing and does another will slow their own learning; and consequently, yours as well.

4) Does the instructor teach that Tai Chi is a martial art, health exercise and philosophy? Without all three aspects, it can never be true Tai Chi. All three are intertwined. Without all three, a deeper understanding of Tai Chi can never be realized. Armed with this information, an aspiring student of Tai Chi can fully pursue the incredibly rewarding study it provides. Whether one wishes to learn to simply relax more in their daily life, enhance other physical disciplines or plumb the deepest depths of this ancient philosophy and martial art; this information will help them from being discouraged in finding the right teacher. Do not be afraid to ask a teacher these questions. A good teacher will understand and will respect your desire to find true Tai Chi. Good Journey! Q&A PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Riley Cote Q:

WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING YOU DID THIS SUMMER?

RC: “I put on my first Cote Carnival with all proceeds benefiting the Multiple Sclerosis Association (MSA). My older sister, Jaime (28), has been diagnosed with MS for eight years, and it is the least I can do for her. It was a great charity event held at Swanky Bubbles in Cherry Hill, NJ. Several of my teammates attended, as did our general manager, Paul Holmgren and our head coach, John Stevens. The event was a huge success and raised approximately $17,000.” Q: What are your favorite places to train? RC: “I work out at the Virtua Health Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ and at New Jersey Martial Arts in Maple Shade, NJ.”

Q: What is your favorite form of training? RC: My favorite all around training is mixed martial arts. You train your whole body and it helps with your full body strength and balance.”

Q: Does training in martial arts help in your profession as a hockey player?

RC: “Absolutely. I got involved with it last year mainly because of my

role as an enforcer with the Flyers. Mixed martial arts helps with my conditioning and to improve my fighting. I want to be the best I can be and I think I am on the right path by my training methods. Any sort of edge I can get in that department is advantageous. I used to take Karate and Tae Kwan Do but I have found that mixed martial arts involves more hockey-like situations with more hands on contact. I don’t train a lot in ground grappling or submission holds because we don’t do this playing hockey. I study the grip fighting and the stand up punching.”

Q: Aside from training in mixed marital arts, what is your favorite exercise?

RC “Dips.”

November/December 2008 I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfitmagazine.com

Q: What does your diet consist of? RC: “I eat tons of vegetables, raw foods, nuts, lots of fruit and brown rice. I try to eat two to three bananas a day and I am a huge salmon and chicken fan. I have done a lot of research on healthy foods in general. It all stems back to what kind of environment you put your body in and what you eat. Any kind of raw foods are the best form of food. I try to keep my diet as simple as possible. My body strength is my money-maker and I have to give it the best fuel.”

Q: Favorite pre-game meal? RC: “Salmon and pasta.” Q: Favorite restaurant? RC: “Capital Grille in Center City.” Riley and his sister at his first MS Carnival.

Q: Why Dips? RC “Early in my career, I did more individual body group exercises. I finally got away from that. I like dips because they are more full body strength including shoulders, triceps and chest as opposed to individual muscle groups.

Q: How often do you train? RC: “Five to six days a week.”

Q: Favorite party place to hang out? RC: “Cavanaugh’s River Deck on Delaware Avenue.” Q: Favorite kind of music? RC: “Anything by Bob Marley.” Q: Favorite movie? RC: “Goodfellas.”

Q: How would you like to be remembered as a professional hockey player?

RC: “As a bad-ass (laughs). I know I’m not going to be remembered as a goal scorer. I would like to be remembered as a fearless player who gave it his all.”

Q: Georges Laraques, regarded as the toughest heavyweight in the NHL, called you “pound-for-pound, the toughest fighter in the NHL.” It seems like you are on the right track for being remembered the way you want. RC: “A compliment like that coming from him is definitely a feather in my cap. Getting that said about me from the toughest guy in the NHL is pretty cool. He fought some of the strongest who ever played the game; including Bob Probert, Tony Twist, Donald Brashear and a lot of others, so that compliment is significant.”

Q: Do you like to fight? RC: “It might sound sick, but I actually do enjoy it. The hardest part about fighting is ‘getting into’ the fight. The build up is actually kind of nerve-wracking, but once the gloves are dropped it is a blast. Nothing is more competitive than a one-on-one battle with an opponent. In a perfect world you win every fight but it doesn’t work that way when you fight 25-30 times during a season.”

the Adrenals and How to Restore Balance By Dr. John R. Vira

You wake up to that annoying alarm; you know, the one that seems to come way too early. The one that every morning you come up with a more inventive way to destroy it, not just throw it as hard as you can against a wall. The day begins, maybe you have to get the kids off to school first, and you get your butt in the shower and get off to work. On your way to work you begin to wonder anew how all these inept people could have possibly received a license to drive a car. You worry about how you are going to afford to keep putting gas in the car with the prices rising astronomically; you worry about the new set of bills that have to be paid this week, and on and on and on. By the time you get to work you are already stressed out and it just keeps on coming. Your boss is a jerk, and your work is backing up on your desk and it is only 9:00 a.m. Ok, so what I am trying to get across here is that life seems to have just gotten more and more stressful with no light at the end of the tunnel. And if the body continues to have to deal with that much stress on a daily basis you are setting yourself up for some serious future health issues! I mean it, this is no joke, and I want all of you who read this to think really long and hard about whether you want to be around twenty years down the road -- maybe to enjoy retirement, or to see your son or daughter get married, or to enjoy your grandchildren.

Let us start with some basics here so that I can explain what is happening in your body, and most importantly, how it can be reversed so that you can live a healthy happy life. The endocrine system is the system of your body that deals with hormones. In my opinion the most important system in your body. It controls your moods, emotions, sex drive, stress handling, weight gain/loss, growth, metabolism, body repair and regeneration (anti-aging), healthy brain function, cognition and memory, to just name a few. Steroid hormones are the family of hormones that are made from cholesterol and are either

anabolic or catabolic in their nature. Oh, and yes, you did read that correctly, I did say cholesterol. Cholesterol is the basic building blocks of a majority of the hormones produced in your body and get this -- the LDLs are the important ones! Imagine that. So lowering your cholesterol, and more specifically, your LDLs makes it hard to balance your hormones. In my opinion, those statin or cholesterol drugs are a form of “population control.” Now let us set up just a bit more of the background story. The central control panel of the endocrine system is the hypothalamus-pituitary axis. Just remember that the hypothalamus basical-

ly tells the pituitary what to do and the pituitary controls the actions of the adrenals, thyroid and gonads. The adrenals are your stress organ. Excessive stress leads to a breakdown in this system (H-P Axis De-Regulation). This will eventually lead you to adrenal blowout and chronic fatigue syndrome. Cortisol is released into the body due to the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism in response to stress. In the short term this is not a bad thing. A quick burst of energy, heightened memory functions, increased immunity and lower sensitivity to pain. The problem arises when our bodies are in a constant state of stress. Under these conditions the body must continue to output more and more cortisol. Now remember this point, cortisol is aggressively catabolic when it is out of balance! It has been well documented that it will aggressively break down your body at high levels. It will impair brain function, suppress your thyroid, decrease your immune response, cause blood sugar imbalances, raise your blood pressure and cause fat deposition around the abdomen and lead to heart disease and stroke. So where is the body getting all the building blocks to continue to output so much cortisol? A colleague of mine coined the term “The Pregnenolone Steal,” because the body is actually stealing cholesterol from the hormone

pregnenolone that it should be using for male and female hormone productions to fuel this response. So what you are getting in the long term is a complete imbalance in your normal hormone panels. Males will have decreased testosterone, which will lead to andropause, and women will have tons of menopausal and menstrual issues. Plus, your body’s production of DHEA (The Anti-Aging Hormone) is drastically lowered as well. So this continued chronic stress state will lead to not only the above-listed health issues, but to numerous hormonal issues for both males and females. So what do we do about this whole scenario and how do we change our situation. To be quite honest with you that is a hugely loaded question; and if you really want to do it right, I would suggest actually sitting down with a healthcare provider who specializes in restorative endocrinology and age management. But, there is certainly what I would call the “cookbook” approach that will at least give you a starting point. To begin with you need to learn more effective ways to deal with your stressors. I would highly suggest that you go to a web site called Heartmath.org for a huge amount of information on stress handling ideas. I also suggest to my clients that they start an exercise program, deep breathing techniques, yoga or tai chi. I also suggest body work support such as chiropractic care, acupuncture and massage. Nutritional support is an absolute must for this situation. Dependant on the person’s specific situation I would suggest appropriate adrenal/ovarian/testicular/H-P Axis Support. Chronic stress in our daily lives is killing us and it needs to be addressed and reversed. Please begin to enjoy your life just a little more. Dr. John Vira is the owner of “CBHA Wellness & Spa” and “Advanced Metabolic Solutions”, both located in Bucks County. Classically trained as a Chiropractic Physician he has expanded his expertise to include Age Management and Fitness. At his offices you will find superior care in the areas of chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, anti-aging, weight loss and fitness. local SUCCESS story #1 The Intern’s TURN

by Ali Baier, PhillyFIT Intern

Before

Meredith Twyman 183 Pounds Lighter and a Happier Outlook on Life Meredith has been able to accomplish quite a large task―losing 183 pounds since March of 2007! As if that wasn’t enough, this motivated woman is also a part time computer forensics student, works as a project administrator for a large contracting firm, has her own jewelry company, and even finds the time to follow the sports she loves. After topping the scale at 407 pounds in March of 2007, Meredith knew it was time for a change. Many different factors motivated her to change her life; such as embarrassment, not being able to find properly fitting clothes, declining mobility, poor sleeping patterns, and also health concerns such as hypothyroidism and extreme edema of the legs. It is almost unbelievable to think that someone was able to lose so much weight in less than two years! Meredith began by simply changing her eating habits and adding exercise (to the best of her ability) to her daily routine. Doing so, she was able to lose twenty-six pounds in the first month. In May of 2007, she had Bariatric bypass surgery, but Meredith knew never to believe that any weight loss surgery was the “answer” alone. “The gastric bypass was a ‘jump start’ for my weight loss,” explained Meredith. “Many believe the surgery is an easy way to lose weight and a dedicated lifestyle change is not essential. This could not be further from the truth. I had to change the foods I ate, the way I thought about food, and choose a more active lifestyle in order for the weight to continue to come off.”

She knew she had to make the conscious After decision to make long term changes to live a more fit and healthy lifestyle. The surgery, combined with plenty of exercise and even healthier eating changes, has helped her come this far. Meredith added much more “good” protein in her diet such as chicken, lean beef, and fish. She tries to stay away from sugars at all cost, using fructose as her sweetener of choice. She eats about five small meals a day; along with some low calorie snacks and sugar-free favorites in case a craving strikes. She also works out everyday―now that is dedication! For her cardio workout, Meredith walks three to five miles daily depending on her schedule. She also likes to vary her workouts by trying new things such as running, stairs, power walking (seven to ten percent incline), Tae-Bo, aerobic dance, and racquetball. She also lifts weights three to four times a week for about thirty-five minutes. She is planning on adding biking, hiking, and cross country skiing to her regimen! Another trick Meredith used to be successful is keeping a journal. “I track not only my weight loss, but the emotions and

issues I deal with during this time. I can see my struggles and where I need to change and grow.” Journals are a great way to learn your overeating triggers; in Meredith’s case they happened to be stress, anger, boredom, and tiredness. Being conscious of these really helped her to learn how to avoid mindless eating.

In this book you will learn: 1) what dieting is and why you should never do it every day, 2) why daily dieting virtually always leads to weight regain, 3) what the body’s response is to daily dieting and 4) how you can blunt this response and fool your body into cooperating with your weight-loss efforts, including getting through the dreaded plateau.

Since losing the weight, Meredith truly believes her life has improved dramatically. She has more confidence in herself, more energy, and an all around happier outlook on life. She can now participate in the sports she enjoys and even found a real love of racing after competing in her first 5K walk/run. She is now training to participate in a 10K race and has the ultimate goal of participating in an Iron Man competition within two years!

LOSE WEIGHT BY DIETING ON AS LITTLE AS ONE DAY PER WEEK!

The Part-Time Diet breaks rank with other diet books in many ways including: -its storyline following two composite fictitious dieters through the plan, new life and new love -its basic system, that provides a reliable way to lose weight -provides for weight maintenance from day one -can require dieting on as little as on day per week -prohibits no food groups -can be adjusted to complement any exercise program. -For a free preview of the PTD check out: www.parttimediet.com. Also available online at: amazon.com, target.com and barnesandnoble.com.

Meredith’s expert advice for anyone who is trying to lose weight: Find a weight loss program that works for you. Surgery is not for everyone. Always keep a journal! Cultivate a desire to change your lifestyle! There will be no change without a desire to change. Get active! Find activities you love to do and just do them. Have a support system. Incorporate family and friends into your weight loss plan. My brother, John and I walk together when possible. He has challenged me to do walks I never thought I could do! It’s always great encouragement! Prayer/meditation time―I set aside time daily for prayer. Find time to sit alone. Set progressive goals.

"Would You Like A Magical Million Dollar Smile That Has People Accusing You Of Finding The Fountain Of Youth And Looking 10 Years Younger?" Free Million Dollar Smile, Denture Relief, And Missing Teeth Evaluations! "Did you know the quality of your smile has a more direct effect on your personal (and business) relationships than any other part of your appearance?" In fact, 88% of all people say they always remember someone with an especially attractive smile. Your Smile Can Make Or Break You! So, if a smile is so important, why don't more people smile…and…why don't they smile more often? The answer is simple: They are ashamed and embarrassed by their teeth! Let's talk about the number of ways to get a "Million Dollar Smile". The best, of course, is to be born with perfect teeth….and then…take perfect care of them for the rest of your life. OK, that takes care of about 1/10 of all the people on earth. For the rest of us, our options are limitless. And each option changes depending on what the existing condition of your teeth are. However, here are 7 Reasons To Choose Our Dental Office! 1. We can take crooked, yellow, embarrassing teeth and turn it into a gorgeous smile that everyone compliments! 2. With Porcelain Veneers, you can retain the strength and structure of your natural teeth. 3. We can easily respace, straighten, and realign your teeth! 4. We can straighten or close spaces without braces. 5. If your teeth chipped or cracked, we can use porcelain crowns to make your smile look brand new! 6. If you wear partials or dentures that are ill-fitting and frustrating, we can improve the look, fit, and feel quickly. 7. No Lecture Dental Office- studies have shown that the #1 reason people put off their dental care has nothing to do with fear or pain, but has to do with the guilt of putting off the dentist. That people keep putting it off, because they are afraid to get lectured by the doctor and staff. At our office, if we lecture you or make you feel guilty, I'll give you $50 right there on the spot! We Make It Affordable! Then, of course there's the expense. There's no getting around it, cosmetic dentistry is not cheap. However, if you choose our office, you do not have to go broke to get that "million dollar smile" you've always wanted. We have many different payment options and work with our patients to make sure they get the highest quality of care despite cost. The truth is, it is more expensive not to have a wonderful smile than to go to the expense to get one. I don't know how

to put an exact financial value on what I call a "million dollar smile"…but… I bet it is 1,000 times more than it costs. In business, looks do count. It's Very Easy To Get Started Here's what to do: Call us to set up an appointment at 215-860-0738. THE INTERN’S TURN

HONORING

Denise Smith FOR HER DEDICATION TO FITNESS By Ali Baier PhillyFIT Intern

It’s never too late to change your lifestyle. As a mother and grandmother, Denise Smith forty-nine, found out and was able to motivate herself to become fit. Hard work and dedication really does pay off. Within seven years Denise went from an unhappy 210 pounds to becoming an AAAI/ISMA certified personal trainer! Today her children lovingly refer to her an “exercise addict.”

What motivated you to change your lifestyle?

“Like all journeys of discovery, I had moments when I thought my detractors might be right and I would never get to where I wanted to be. Unfortunately I had to take two years off due to back surgery. Two of my spinal discs had deteriorated and I was in great pain. As a result, I gained much weight during this time. The doctors thought I might never be able to exercise as I was previously. Then, one day I went for a follow up and my doctor was amazed at my progress. I started back working out slowly and in time I was able to regain my strength and the will to tone my body.”

“My story begins in 2000 when, one Easter Sunday my family and I took a picture before going to church. It was then that I saw myself for the first time. I was so astonished at how fat I’d gotten. I was 210 pounds—my heaviest weight ever. I was not happy and determined to make a change.”

What has changed in your life since getting healthy?

What helped you get results?

Do you have any advice to readers who want to get fit?

“It took time but eventually I began to see my body change. I attribute my changes to a number of factors that many reading these words already know to be true: aerobic exercise, weight training and eating clean, focusing on fruits, vegetables and lean meats (turkey, tuna, chicken, etc.) coupled with the often missed point of cutting back on a few calories each day. Cutting calories from the diet coupled with the calories I burned while working out allowed my body to tap into its fat reserves. Overtime, the calorie deficit I created began to help reshape my body.” 30 I PhillyFIT

Did you endure any setbacks?

“The biggest difference was how my skin tone changed (for the better!). My health changed too (I also quit smoking–no small task either as many can attest). My gut went down and my bootie became firmer. One student in my class recently said that they want a bootie like mine!”

“My approach to fitness is that it’s not a normal route. Rather, change is an adventure; an event and a process. It takes patience and you have to take it one day at a time. Loosing weight and wanting a gorgeous body does not happen overnight and there is no magic pill. I recall a student asking how can they get arms, back, abs and a butt like mine. I just smile and reply that it takes hard work, eating clean and dedication to yourself.” Allie Baier – Intern Allie is a junior marketing major at James Madison University from Warminster, PA. The Intern’s Turn

Destiny MAKER By Jessica Wilkins PhillyFIT Intern

SOME COULD JOKE THAT GLENN FENSTER TOOK THE LONG WAY TO PHILADELPHIA--OVER SIX THOUSAND MILES BY BICYCLE FROM DENVER, COLORADO, UP THE EASTERN COASTLINE TO CANADA AND DOWN THROUGH NEW YORK. FENSTER, A PHILLY NATIVE, TOOK A MUCH-NEEDED REPRIEVE ON JULY 1 WITH FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS AT CHICKIE AND PETE’S IN THE NORTHEAST.

Those who know Fenster know that his crosscountry trek has a specific purpose; to raise awareness about epilepsy, a disease his son Nyle was diagnosed with at age two. The story goes as follows: father and son were playing tennis one day when Nyle suffered a seizure. Glenn says his son hit the ground hard but when he went to help him up, Nyle refused. Perplexed, Glenn asked how he had the ambition to keep getting up. Nyle’s reply was that he had never seen his father stay down before. Fenster says it was then he was inspired to do something radical. A few days later he sold his car and began training for his first long distance ride. Two years later in 2006 he embarked on a 4,300 mile ride from Seattle to Miami and last year he rode 6,200 miles from Alaska to Miami. Now on his third journey across the country, Fenster says that his goal is to still raise the “level of consciousness about epilepsy in North America.” A graduate of a Northeast high school, Fenster has always been an athlete. He played baseball for Bucks County College and tried out for the Florida Marlins in 1987. He eventually took up 32 I PhillyFIT

tennis, which he now teaches, but nothing has inspired Fenster to endure such physical challenges as his love for his son. “I have worked my entire life athletically just waiting to basically show the world what kind of an athlete I am,” said Fenster. “This has given me not only the chance to do that, but also to show my son that no matter what disability of the mind or body, anything can be accomplished.” For Fenster, there are no days off. He rides an average of 120 miles per day through all types of weather, terrain and bike troubles. “I must find the will to continue,” Fenster wrote in his online journal. “There were times yesterday I just wanted to stop. I keep thinking of Nyle and those who keep coming out to support me―all those who send encouraging words. I have surpassed last years miles and I must find something inside of me not to give up.” “Everyday is another challenge,” says Rein, a friend of fortyfive years who has been instrumental in making Fenster’s ride as smooth as possible, including an escort by the Canadian guards. Fenster’s journey has also enabled him to meet many people along the way that share his concern for epilepsy. “I have met unbelievable people and have heard incredible stories,” says Fenster.

November/December 2008 I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfitmagazine.com

“A lot of people don’t know how terrible Epilepsy is,” said Rein. “As more people hear about Glenn, the more they get involved.” Admittedly, Fenster says he didn’t know much about epilepsy before his son was diagnosed. “It was crushing as a father,” said Fenster. “It was difficult to experience and many different things go through your mind, but you must relinquish all emotions and really focus on your child.”

According to Epilepsy Foundation, about 300,000 children under the age of fourteen have epilepsy in America. The severity of the disease varies; some children grow out of it, while others will struggle with it for the rest of their life. Fenster says his son Nyle, now fourteen years old, has epilepsy but it doesn’t stop him from enjoying the things he loves like sports and playing the piano. “Epilepsy is something that people have, not who they are,” said Fenster. “He lives a regular life. He just has to be careful,” said Fenster. Nyle was recently named the National Epilepsy spokesperson and attended Kids Speak Up, a national conference for youth leaders with epilepsy in March. Even through extreme heat, lightning storms and physical fatigue, Fenster insists that the hardest part of his trip is always the first mile; knowing that he must leave his son for the next few months. But by reading Fenster’s journal entries, it becomes obvious that the thoughts of his son are what kept him peddling through each challenging day.

On July 16, with 8,000 miles and three months between them, Glenn and Nyle reunited with each other in Florida. So what’s on the agenda now for Fenster? He plans to sit down and write a book about his son’s courage to battle epilepsy and the inspiration it has given him. If you would like more information about Glenn’s amazing ride, please visit www.destinymaker.org. Good Conditioning Helps Bonnie Weber Stumpo

Survive Aneurysm By David Block

February 26, 2004 is a date that Bonnie Weber Stumpo of King of Prussia will never forget, because on that fateful day, she almost died, due to an aneurysm. It happened while she was exercising on the elliptical machine at Bally Total Fitness in King of Prussia.

“I had a ticking time bomb in my head and didn’t even know it,” said Stumpo, who was thirty years old at the time. “I was always in shape; I never had health problems.” However, several months before the attack, she started getting headaches. “I thought it was odd because I was not one to get headaches. Plus, they were in strange locations of my skull. They weren’t the usual tension headache in the forehead.” But those headaches were so mild and infrequent that she ignored them. She thought that everything was fine, even on that February 26th, when she stepped onto the elliptical machine. “While I was on the elliptical machine, I heard something pop in my head. My friend working out next to me asked if I was okay and I said, ‘No.’ I got off the machine, laid on the ground and passed out. It was a good thing this didn’t happen while I was driving because I could have been killed.” She received brain surgery at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. “The doctors told me that I had a one percent chance of surviving,” said Stumpo. “They told me that being fit saved my life.” She 34 I PhillyFIT

explained that people around her age have less of a chance of surviving aneurysms than older people: “Your brain shrinks when you get older, so if an older person gets an aneurysm, there is more room for the blood to travel.” She hates to imagine the repercussions had she been out of shape, or overweight or suffering from high blood pressure. Stumpo knew people in similar predicaments who were less fortunate. Stumpo said, “Recently, a dear friend died from a brain aneurysm. I like to encourage people to get checked if they have strange headaches. That can save their lives.” Fortunately, Stumpo was always in shape, from childhood through adulthood, and at age twenty, her desire to be fit increased while working as a nursing-assistant. “It was really depressing because I was having patients die on me. I decided to be a personal trainer.” She was certified through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) at Camden County Community College. Then she earned a full comprehensive certification certificate from Pilates and More in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Her conditioning, not only saved her from an aneurysm, it also quickened her recovery time. “I was out of the hospital

two and a half weeks later, and the day I was discharged, I was using the treadmill―there was no residue, I didn’t need speech therapy, PT or medication,” things, which are quite common for recovering aneurysm patients. But she wasn’t back to normal immediately; for the first six months, she wasn’t allowed to lift anything heavier than a fork.

Monica Montone

From Track Star to Bodybuilder By Elizabeth Evans

Put bodybuilder Monica Montone in front of a panel of judges, and the prizewinning Doylestown resident owns the stage. “I am a competitor in every sense of the word,” says Montone, who is working on getting her pro card in the United States Bodybuilding Federation. “I love to challenge my mind and body. Nothing is better than setting a goal and working diligently everyday to achieve it.” Montone feels that determination and dedication keep her balanced and focused. The twenty-five year old, who recently graduated from Temple University, is a substitute health and physical education teacher and part-time personal trainer. She hopes to find a permanent position in an area high school, so she can help encourage and inspire teenagers. She would also love to coach track and field. Montone was an accomplished sprinter for Archbishop Wood’s track team in Warminster. “Track was my ultimate passion; I loved nothing more than running fast,” she said. She was first introduced to weightlifting as a part of her track team’s training program. Although Montone was devoted to running, she sustained several injuries which caused her to change her focus ― it was at this point that she decided to join the gym.

“Once I began lifting heavier (weights) and learning more about nutrition, I realized that my body responded quite favorably to resistance training,” she noted. She brought the same intensity to bodybuilding that she had brought to running. After seeing the way muscle “enhanced” her slender build, Montone became fascinated with bodybuilding, and it didn’t take long before she became interested in competing. “Bodybuilding is about competing with yourself, making the right gains and stepping on stage in better condition (this year) than the year before.” Starting with a 2005 win in the NABBA (National Amateur BodyBuilders Association), Junior National Championship, Montone has gone on to win other local and national competitions. When we spoke, Montone was training for the 2008 USBF Jersey Shore Natural Pro Show. Aside from winning numerous first place trophies, this talented show-stopper has also been named “Best Poser” in every competition she has entered. “I choreograph my posing routines to show off my best assets. I incorporate various dance and gymnastic moves in these routines; I have a lot of energy and I love being on stage.

“She can walk into a room and own it,” said her father, Josh Montone. The first time her family saw her compete, “we were just blown away. She is very engaging.” When asked for some advice for novice female lifters, Montone said: “Be sure to set realistic short and long-term goals. It makes it so much easier to stay on track when you train with a purpose.” Beth Cipollo has trained with Montone for two years. “She’s very motivating,” said the Warrington native. “She definitely knows what she’s doing. Monica is very easy to get along with, but when it comes to training, she really makes me work.” Cipollo has lost weight, increased her lean muscle mass, and improved her cardiovascular endurance. “I don’t look at working out as something I have to do. It’s something I want to do. I see results.” 36 I PhillyFIT

Local Expert Offers Useful Tips for

Selecting a Reputable Pet Groomer By Taria Avery

Grooming is an unregulated industry that requires pet owners take extra precautions.

40 I PhillyFIT

PHILADELPHIA – Selecting a hairdresser isn’t something people take lightly. According to one local expert, “Pet parents” should take the same care when selecting a groomer for their dog or cat.” “Many people don’t realize that grooming is an unregulated industry,” explains Taria Avery, owner of Avery Pet Styling Salon and Boutique. “Some groomers go to the effort of receiving formal certification from an accredited grooming academy, others do an apprenticeship to learn the trade, and some spend a Saturday practicing with a friend in the back yard. It’s this variability that makes it necessary for pet parents to be careful when selecting someone to care for their pet.” Avery recommends that pet parents carefully research and interview prospective grooming candidates before making a final selection. To help with this process, she offers the following tips:

Look for a Knowledgeable Groomer A grooming session is much more than a bath and a haircut; it can be a form of check-up. A well-trained groomer will possess an in-depth knowledge of animal anatomy and ailments, and be able to bring concerns – such as cysts, lumps, parasites, skin conditions, infected ears or impacted glands – to the owner’s attention. To determine a groomer’s knowledge base, Avery suggests that pet owners ask about the type of training that the groomer received; how long the groomer has been grooming; whether the groomer knows animal CPR and if the groomer is active in any professional associations.

Look for a Groomer Who Has Experience with Your Breed of Pet Don’t assume that a groomer has experience with all breeds. Some breeds require special techniques. If a pet requires a specific style or grooming technique, make sure that the groomer can deliver. It’s also important that the groomer considers the pet’s lifestyle. If a poodle spends its days playing in the woods, it’s likely the dog doesn’t need a “Continental trim.”

November/December 2008 I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfitmagazine.com

Evaluate the Business Operation There are many types of grooming operations. No matter the set up, pet parents should examine each candidate carefully. If it’s a grooming shop or mobile grooming salon, take note of how it smells and whether it’s clean. Is it well lit and comfortable? Do the pets seem relaxed? Watch how the groomer handles the pets. Is he or she attentive? Does the groomer use the grooming tools properly? How does the groomer interact with the owners? If anything causes you pause, find another groomer.

Ask for Referrals and Check References When looking for a groomer, pet parents should start with the people they trust – friends, family members, and veterinarian. Other people to speak with include the pet supply store, animal rescue and Better Business Bureau. Once a prospective groomer has been identified and interviewed, be sure to ask for and check his or her references. Ultimately, pet parents want a groomer who is professional, comes highly recommended, and is complaint free.

Select a Groomer with Whom You Can Have a Long-Standing Relationship Grooming is a life-long process for most pets. Therefore, when selecting a groomer, strive to find someone with whom you and your pet are comfortable and can have a long-standing relationship. The ideal groomer is respectful of your time, shows concern for your pet and will speak with you candidly about his or her well being as well as your reservations, desires and expectations regarding the grooming process.

Avery emphasizes that while certification is the only real benchmark in the grooming industry, it’s important to keep in mind that there are many groomers who have worked very hard to learn and remain at the forefront of their trade. “Don’t disqualify someone simply because they aren’t certified,” she says. “Do your research and conduct your interviews.”

Taria Avery is a certified groomer and owner of Avery’s Pet Styling Salon and Boutique After earning her bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing from Drexel University, Taria went on to pursue her passion. An animal enthusiast and pet parent, Taria successfully earned her diploma as a certified groomer and stylist from the Academy of Dog Grooming Arts in Arlington Heights, Illinois, outside of Chicago.

KNOW THE FACTS: DON’T EXPOSE YOUR CHILDREN!

Parasites, Pets and Kids By Dr. Rebecchi, Jr.

Hookworms and roundworms can be harbored by your dog or cat and transmitted to children who are living in homes with pets. In some cases these parasites can cause blindness in humans. It is thought that 30% to 50% of dogs and cats carry gastrointestinal (GI) parasites and that 1 to 3 million people in the U.S. have infections from the same parasites carried by pets. Children, the elderly and immunocompromised people are at high risk. Dogs get infected with hookworms and roundworms by walking places where other dogs have defecated. The microscopic roundworm eggs and hookworm larvae end up on your dog’s feet. Your dog then licks his feet and infects him or herself with these GI parasites. Three weeks later, your dog is shedding hookworm eggs and larvae from his GI tract. If your dog licks his anus and then licks your child, or if your child pets your dog, he or she can become infected with these parasites. Dogs can get ticks that spread Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and tularemia, which can affect people if the ticks detach from the dog and attach themselves to your child. This could be a risk factor for your children if the family dog or cat sleeps in their bed. Cats get infected with hookworms and tapeworms by hunting prey. Even if your cat lives indoors, the ingestion of one house mouse can expose your cat to GI parasites. Cats with a flea infestation can spread cat scratch fever to children, elderly people, or immunocompromised (AIDS, cancer patients, organ transplant recipients) people. 42 I PhillyFIT

How Can You Prevent the Risk of Spreading Parasites to Your Children? • Keep your dog on monthly heartworm preventative all year. This medication helps to prevent hookworms and roundworms in your dog. Keep your dog on topical flea and tick control all year. • Scoop the yard where your dog defecates at least weekly, ideally daily, as worm eggs and larvae are found in stool and can contaminate the environment. • Bring your pet’s stool sample to your veterinarian at least twice per year and ideally four times per year. You do not have to bring your pet into the veterinary hospital for this service. The stool should be fresh. Many veterinarians will provide a special cup that allows specimen collection without touching the stool. • Keep your cat on heartworm prevention once per month all year. This medication eliminates hookworms that could be potentially spread to humans in the household. It also kills fleas, which can be culprits in spreading cat scratch disease (cat scratch fever). • Teach your children to wash their hands before eating, especially if they have recently handled their pet. No Retreat…

No Surrender??? A DAY IN THE LIFE AT THE PHILLYFIT WELLNESS RETREAT

By Fernando Paredes, CPT, NASM, NSCA

Editor’s Note: this article is a MUST READ if you are serious about making positive changes in your life and have wondered if enrolling in our Retreat program could be the thing that places you on the fast track! When I first signed up to present at the PhillyFIT Wellness Retreat, I was very excited. Jami’s confidence that I would be a good addition to the panel of experts was flattering and I really liked the concept of it all.

impromptu private consults and answering questions from the retreat participants. Great! I was ready. Nothing went according to plan! Everyone got up late. They were moving about slowly and with no urgency. I was thinking to myself, “Hey! We’ve got a schedule we need to stick to here people. Isn’t this going mess things up here?” Later, I found out it did just the opposite.

A full seven-day of nothing but YOU; and, how you can make YOU better with the help of top area professionals guiding you every step of the way. Experienced and caring professionals from various health and fitness fields addressing YOUR unique needs, challenges, obstacles, desires, goals and customizing it all into your I looked around the kitchen and very own plan to place you on the fast living room, and I noticed a lot of track.

As I sat on the couch raring to get started with my workout session, it slowly began to hit me. I looked around the kitchen and living relaxed, happy, smiling faces. room, and I noticed a lot of relaxed, And all of this in the private and comhappy, smiling faces. As I listened to fortable setting of a beautiful bay front estate in Avalon?! the conversations floating around, I noticed how everyone was Now THAT is something I can get into! My scheduled day to being very encouraging and supportive. And as I started meetpresent was Wednesday and I didn’t know what to expect. I had ing my fellow panel of professionals presenting that day, I heard a lot of good things so far, but I wasn’t sure about what noticed how they were taking an active interest in every particiawaited me there. pant and reaching out to them in any way they could. That’s when I GOT it. That’s when I FELT it!

I’m here! Hey…where is everybody? I arrived late Tuesday night, everyone had gone to sleep and the only ones still up were the high-energy fitness pros talking, playing cards and having fun. Go figure, right? After I got the low-down on the day’s activities, I went to sleep. Little did I know what was in store for me. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was going to experience the next day!

The Retreat Atmosphere

Ok, let’s DO THIS!

What you may ask is the energy of the Retreat? Call it energy, atmosphere, a “feel,” the “vibe” or whatever you want to call it. All I know is that it was there, it was different and it was strong. In fact, it was almost overwhelming. There have been very few places that I have ever been in which I’ve felt such a strong positive atmosphere echoing of support, encouragement and patience.

I met with Jami early in the morning, she gave me the full tour of the house, which was beautiful by the way, and we got down to business. The plan was for me to lead the group through a morning workout around 9a.m., do a seminar around 2p.m. and just make myself available for the duration of the day for

At the Retreat it was all about allowing you the time to finally redirect your energy and focus on YOURSELF. Getting in some guilt-free relaxation to de-stress the body and mind. Once I really felt all of that, I chose to soak it all in and get the full

48 I PhillyFIT

benefit of that atmosphere myself. That it was ok to slow down rather than rush around. So the 9a.m. workout, which went great by the way, became an 11a.m. workout. My “Fat-Loss Secrets Revealed” Seminar, which went even better, went on at 4p.m. instead of 2p.m. Who cared? Not me. Not anymore.

I Really Can’t Explain It

No Retreat…No Surrender?? You’ve heard the above expression before, right? Most people associate it with tenacity. To never let go. To never give up. However, too many people misapply this quality in a negative, self-defeating cause. You see, too many people fall into these two categories:

I know it may sound weird to you, but I can’t really explain how it felt to be there that day. Words can’t express it. I can’t find any to do it justice, and it really caught me totally off-guard. Jami tried telling me. She said “Fernando, you are going to love the Retreat. The whole vibe there is very special. I really can’t explain it. You’ll see what I mean when you get there.”

They never let go of the bad habits which prevent them from winning the prize of achieving what they want. It’s like saying, “I really want THAT, but I don’t want to change anything that I currently do in order to get that.” They never give up to their bad habits, “surrendering” them, as it were, and admit that they need help. This is just misapplied self-pride. It’s like saying, “I know that I need to change. But since I haven’t been able to figure out HOW, I don’t want anyone else to help me.”

Now, I totally understand. Believe me when I say that being there was like a contradiction of terms ― it was the toughest yet relaxing and regenerating “work” day I’ve ever had! Don’t take my word for it. Speak to ANYONE that attended, whether as a participant or a presenter, they will all tell you the exact same thing. It truly was a great place to be.

Think about it. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? But that is the sad reality of what happens to most people. And it may be happening to you right now. So if you are still struggling to achieve the body and life YOU want, here’s my remedy for you: 1. LET GO of the bad habits that are holding you back from winning.

The Experts It was also really great to finally put a face to the other folks involved with PhillyFIT Magazine! People like Back in Balance’s Nita Kessler, Weight Loss Coaching’s John Fairchild, Nutrition in Motion’s Joanna Chodorowska, Integrative Nutrition’s Susie Beiler, Safe Day’s Studio’s Mike Andrus and Bob Mattis, PhillyFIT Challenge team member Claudine Ascher and more. Obviously, the biggest reason participants enrolled in the Retreat was to learn from these experts. And boy did they ever! After my seminar for example, BIG Lloyd Yancey came over to me with some further questions on what I presented. So while BIG Lloyd and I were in the living room discussing all the latest methods and research on maximizing fat loss, I saw: John and Joanna giving impromptu nutritional and cooking lessons in the kitchen; Nita assisting a stressed out participant with a massage; Susie consulting with someone about how to achieve life balance; and, Mike teaching another person easy-to-learn, real-world self-defense techniques! Let me tell you, there was A LOT of great education, coaching and fun being had by all! How would you have liked to have all those experts at YOUR fingertips for a full week? So what is preventing you from doing it? I think I know!

2. If you can’t “let go” under your own power ― admit it, then surrender your misapplied self-pride and accept HELP from someone who can really help you! That was the mindset of the participants that enrolled in the Retreat program. They reaped more education, support and encouragement than they ever imagined that week; all because they ALLOWED us to help them. I applaud each and every one of them for it. I mean, I actually saw people’s lives permanently change before my very eyes. It was amazing. It’s not too late for YOU to do the same. Make it your goal to surrender your bad habits and self-pride so you CAN win the prize you’re so desperately seeking. If you want help PhillyFIT style, enroll in next year’s PhillyFIT Wellness Retreat Program today and say, “Yes PhillyFIT Retreat ― Yes I’ll Surrender!”

WE’D LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE! January 28th 2009 - February 1st 2009. See ad on page 2

The Girls in the

By Charles Peeples

Sabrina Casa-Bennett, whose nom de guerre is “Rollin’ Rican,” wants you to know more about her sport. She wants you to know that the Penn Jersey SheDevils play by Old School Derby Association rules and traditions that characterized Roller Derby’s heyday half a century ago when thousands attended the matches and millions more watched on television. The old banked tracks are few and far between, but the regulation quadskates (Sabrina’s custom-made Riedell 265 Track Skating Boots, “the only boot designed by derby skaters for Roller Derby”) are in keeping with RD’s finest traditions. Lest any She-Devil forget what those traditions are, Coach Judy “The Polish Ace” Sowinski, a veteran of that earlier era, keeps things in line with occasional saltiness that might give a Marine sergeant pause. Sabrina, like Judy and the other girls, can be rough too in the heat of action, but in her capacity as their spokesperson, she’s quietly earnest in expressing what PJSD does; and, though she might not have said as much, what it means. No doubt, to many, Roller Derby still conjures images similar to those of pro wrestling: contrived hype, war-paint, spectacular brutality for its own sake, showbiz for bucks, underpinned by fakeness and overlaid with sleaze--even if the 1972 film Kansas City Bomber did man50 I PhillyFIT

age to serve it with Raquel Welch. We’re past all that, hopefully, and Roller Derby is on the rebound, recognized today as a legitimate sport emphasizing conditioning and agility of both body and mind. Mind? Absolutely…there’s a lot more going on during the Jam than rolling fast and shoving; amidst all that, not only must you develop peripheral awareness at any instant of the quickly-changing positions of every other player relative to you and each other, but understanding the overall positional strategy your team’s using, as well as that which the other team is using. Not every PhillyFIT reader is particularly interested in RD’s technical details, and there are many excellent sites online explaining all that, even some with video-game-like simulations. But there are things you should know about PJSD: They’re inclusive--even coed (though while the guys practice with the women they rarely compete on their teams). The players come in all shapes and sizes, from “Cherry Bomber,” the Sadistic Sweetheart’s tiny Jammer who flits effortlessly through the pack like some sort of virus or apparition, to her co-captain, “Lucky Luciano,” the main Blocker who’s twice her size. But size, skill-level, background and age don’t exclude you from participation. Ages range from nineteen upward, and include all imaginable back-

grounds: chefs, teachers, massage therapists, lawyers, painters, photographers, physician’s assistants, and doctorate students. And plenty of moms. Katie Birtell (aka “RUDEpunzal”) is approaching fifty and recovering from ankle surgery, but that doesn’t keep her out of the past time she shares with her daughter Rachael (aka “LATETBug”) and Rachael’s boyfriend Rob (aka “Bobbie Carnage”). “After engorging myself with Thanksgiving Dinner 2005, I got bad news,” Katie told me. “Along with high blood pressure I now had high cholesterol. More pills to add to my morning regimen I thought, so I decided to lose weight as my 2006 New Year’s resolution, and here I am. It’s certainly a good workout and it sure makes you feel better about yourself. ” It’s rough and tumble, but there are many penalty rules, and injuries are usually minimal; less than you’d find in say, soccer. “The most common game injuries are contusions, sprains, and something fondly referred to as ‘rink rash,’” says Meg (aka “Tuffy Muffy”). “Rink-rash occurs when skin meets rink at a high velocity and causes a painful abrasion, often on the thigh. It’s worse for the girls who wear fish-net stockings, who often get a fishnet patterned burn ingrained into their rink-rash. I have seen rink-rash come in handy in one instance though, when Cherry Bomber got a double-whip on the

banked track that didn’t go as planned and rink rash on her shoulder prevented her from flying off the track altogether. “During that trip I also got about fifty splinters in my butt from taking a ‘brodie’ (a fall, named after some guy who supposedly survived a tumble from the Brooklyn Bridge) on an unfinished part of the track. Good fun! These non-serious injuries are often compared and bragged about like old war-wounds.” But falling down is expected. It’s part of the fun, an art even, and if you don’t spend part of your time on the floor you aren’t playing. Since you’re wearing plenty of protection, you’ll mostly come down with a practiced clatter, and it’s fun to watch the way some of these players drop and slide adroitly into a deliberate landing. It’s fabulous conditioning. “We practice for two hours two to three times per week as a team,” says Megan. “Practice begins with a short jog just to get our heart rates up a bit. Then we stretch, focusing on the muscles we use most while skating: quads, hip adductors, hams, calves, and low backs. Then I lead the team in strength training. I keep it simple and rotate muscle groups for each practice: legs, core, and arms. I focus on teaching proper technique so that skaters don’t hurt themselves when they train on their own. To finish off the warm-up we do relay sprints as a form of interval aerobic training. Then we quickly throw on our skates and start what we call “the pace,” a 20 to 25 minute endurance drill with occasional sprints/races. The rest of practice is typically spent on drills and scrimmaging. Drills include throwing shoulders or hips into another skater (blocking), running on our toe stops, falls, getting up quickly from a fall, and jumping over objects like 2.5 feet tall cones.”

Sabrina more than once about this “image” thing, having contended with similar public perceptions of women who weightlift, bodybuild, play Rugby or participate in other “unfeminine” endeavors as much as anything else because I want to them to succeed too. But often I’ve met resistance from the women themselves, so deeply absorbed in their sport they tell you they couldn’t care less what you think. Sabrina seems tuned-in though: “We’re aware of the image we portray to the public. Yes, there are skaters who have tattoos and piercings. Yes, there are girls who think a game should be skated in very little clothing. PJSD’s trying to separate ourselves from that. Now, don’t get me wrong, we do have some skaters covered in tattoos and piercings (myself included) and some who aren’t, but like the names. It’s just part of the act, and either way we have the athleticism to back up our act. We know that “sex sells,” but we try to keep our uniforms respectably tailored to reflect the serious athletes we are. A pretty girl may get people into the seats, but it’s what those “pretty girls” do out there that keeps you in those seats!” Come Jam with us! It’s about giving. The SheDevils spend as much time fund-raising for charities as they do jamming. “We give back to the community,” says Sabrina. “Yes, we LOVE to party, and pride ourselves on the parties we have after our games. But we also like to thank the fans by giving back to the towns in which they live. In this past season we have been a part of both Mt. Holly’s and Philly’s St. Patty’s Day Parades. Mommapaloza in Camden County, we held two fundraisers for the Susan G. Koman Cure cause and we were a part of Equality Forum & OutFest. As a league, we voted that our 2008 charity will be for Autisim Awareness, because a portion of our skaters have been personally affected by this disease.” Ok, now about the tattoos, piercings, warpaint, in-your-face names (e.g. “HotRod Hussy,” “Dirty Gert,” ”Bashin’ Binky”) and posturing--don’t those things echo, uh… you know! PHILLY FIT CHALLENGE

at Fairmount Athletic Club By Catherine McCarthy

I was so excited to become a member of the PhillyFIT Challenge Team and couldn’t wait to participate in my first challenge. Then the email came—Pole fitness! Really? Could I do this? Even though I teach fitness classes and appear to be outgoing—I’m really very shy! What exactly is pole dancing? Do I have to have a background in dance? What would the instructor be like? What would the club be like? Someone said something about me getting in touch with my “inner goddess.” Hmmm…. I don’t know. I’m not sure I have an inner goddess!? But on a beautiful Saturday morning all of my questions were answered. I was introduced to an absolutely amazing new workout that was fun, challenging and a little sexy. The moves were graceful, the instructor was completely professional, the atmosphere friendly and the club beautiful. On top of it all, I even learned a few things about myself. Being a total “type A” personality, I arrived very early that morning. The Fairmount Athletic Club is a brand new, state of the art, facility that has everything you could hope for in a club. The group fitness schedule alone was enough to bring tears of joy to the eyes of the hardiest fitness enthusiast. They offer a full spectrum of classes from the unique Pole Fitness to Body Pump, Crossfit, Spin, Pilates, Yoga, Kickbox, Fitness Journey (a crosstraining class) and Fusion classes! James, one of the club’s many personal trainers, gave me a private tour. Along the way I saw several cardiovascular and weight training areas, a childcare facility, a juice bar/café, a room for martial arts and many, many squash courts. However, what I really wanted to see was the room where pole-fitness classes were performed. (I was afraid that people were going to be able to watch me as I tried to get in touch with my inner goddess!) James saved the best part of the tour for last. The room used for pole fitness, to my great relief, was in a very secluded part of the gym, upstairs—no curious onlookers allowed. It was cozy, warm and best of all complete with polished steel poles that are securely attached to the floor and ceiling! Wow! Real attached poles, I was impressed. I had never seen anything like it before. I was excited to meet up with my challenge teammates, Kristine, Susan and Claudine. I found them to be three outstanding ladies that know their way around the world of fitness. I think we all felt the same way about the challenge, a little nervous, somewhat cautious, but highly enthusiastic! Any trepidation we might have felt evaporated immediately when we met our instructor in this new 52 I PhillyFIT

fitness adventure. Heather Slawek’s down to earth personality and warmth made us feel completely at ease and comfortable. Heather’s credentials were impressive. She was a featured regular dancer on the two-hit teen T.V. dance shows “Dancing on Air” and “Dance Party USA” for six years. She worked for MTV in NYC for two years while attending Temple University. She has been a certified group fitness instructor since 1989 and was the winner of the Miss Fitness Philadelphia contest in 1997; and, she is the star of numerous fitness videos. But with all of those amazing accolades, she’s very friendly and sweet, while at the same time was completely professional. Heather began the class with an easy-to-follow dance type warm up using a chair. It was fun, sexy and had us all laughing right from the start. The dance format was great and looked awesome too! From there we moved on to some simple stretch techniques on the pole, which incorporated many moves taken directly from yoga,

Pilate’s and gymnastics. It was a nice way to start because we had never done anything quite like pole fitness. Also, it was a great introduction that allowed us to become familiar with the pole— using it as a prop for the class and also as a new piece of “fitness equipment.” Using the pole as a support allowed us to take the stretches to a much deeper level than we normally could without its stability. I must say that Claudine was amazingly limber and took right to it, performing a backbend with ease and grace! Once our muscles were warm, we were ready to begin our dance. We were soon moving in tune to the music doing spins, transitions and learning how to climb. Some of the moves were very slow and deliberate. For instance “the walk”—which was my personal favorite because it made me feel very feminine and sassy. And — can I say it very, very sexy! But there were also, incredibly physically challenging moves too. At one point or another, I used every muscle in my body while finding out that I do have an inner goddess after all! The next day, all of the challenge team members agreed that we were very aware that we had experienced a great workout. We were sore but the kind of sore that lets you know that you used muscles that you don’t use in our usual activities. We were really surprised to find that pole fitness is also an amazing cardio work out. The combination of performing dance moves while, at times, holding up your own body weight on the pole was extremely challenging. It was a fantastic cardio interval workout that allowed us to raise our heart rates enough to know that we were burning a lot of calories. (I’ve been told up to 250 to 400 calories in an hour.)

spirit while letting you lose yourself in the workout. There is no way you’re worrying about that grocery list or the laundry while pole dancing. But best of all, it lets you get in touch with that softer feminine side of yourself. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions, including an optional performance night for the participants and their friends and family. Women may take a trial class for a fee that will be credited toward the cost of the series if they decide to sign up. Club membership is not required to participate in the pole fitness class. For more information about the class, please call the Fairmount Athletic Club at 610-992-1004. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. The PhillyFIT Challenge Team agrees that you will be happy that you did. Let that inner goddess within you come out to play! It didn’t take long before we were putting together combinations of moves and spins to create our own dance. We all learned the same moves, but at the same time all had our favorites. Heather also showed several modifications and alternatives, if we were having trouble with a move. She was also very in tune with our needs as new students. She realized that some of us were able to take verbal instruction, but others needed a visual model. Kristine, Claudia, Susan and I had a great time! We agreed that we had had one of the best workouts ever! Pole fitness is totally addictive. It’s a strenuous strength training and cardio workout that gives you a feeling of exhilaration and freedom that you’ll never experience in any other class. The Full Moon in TAURUS on November 13th brings the best time to conclude financial decisions, beautification projects and make some decisions for 2009.

By Elizabeth

November 2008

The New Moon in SAGITTARIUS on November 27th brings a celestial, spiritual reminder to be thankful for many things. The positive joy of this New Moon on Thanksgiving Day can bring warmth and light into your life. SCORPIO: Polarity Feminine Sign: Mutable Element: Water Planetary Rule: 8th House / Pluto Genitals-Colon FOCUS: I DESIRE

The Personal Signs Aries (3/21 – 4/20) Despite the urge to get away from it all travel isn’t the wisest choice now, especially early or late in the month. Opt for a mental journey inward, instead of a physical one as a way to satisfy your spirit of adventure. Take a quick class, or stock up on the latest books. If you have a legal matter pending, listen to expert advice. Your career continues to be a bright spot of opportunity. You have the potential to make a star-studded leap in status. Keep alert, because the opportunity might be sudden and from an unexpected source. Close ties benefit the first few days of the month. However, relationships with in-laws and other family members could present a challenge, especially around the Thanksgiving Holiday. Do your best not to be drawn into a no-win situation. It’s just not worth the aggravation. The focus needs to continue on money matters. Although you’ve got it to spend, unexpected expenses could quickly arise. Be wise. Save! Also, spend conservatively.

Taurus (4/21-5/21) You could see another side of someone at work, the boss or a co-worker, different from what you thought to be true. Although this will be disappointing, chalk it up to a case of “live and learn.” Just be careful what you tell to whom. Someone could try to lead you astray, steal the credit, or undermine your effort. Believe in the facts, not promises or rumors. You may begin to search new territories or new scenery. That’s a plus if you plan to travel this month, or if you’re planning a winter trip. If you’re a student (or the parent of one), in search for funding for college admittance, you could have plenty to celebrate. Personal relationships continue to delight you. Communication strengthens ties,

and you’ll be on the same wavelength as your partner, close friends and loved ones. Share your thoughts and feelings and let them know how much they mean to you. Finances will be mixed with the possibility of unexpected expenses as well as gains.

hectic days at work will extend into December. You’ll get a preview starting November 16th. Make it a point to strengthen coworker relationships so that you can call on others to lend a hand when the work begins to pile up.

Leo (7/23-8/22) Gemini (5/21-6/20) Even though work will be hectic and you’ll be in the midst of the holiday social whirl, you will need to slow the pace a little. Take time for yourself and make sleep, rest, and relaxation daily priorities. You’ll only get further behind if you get run down and catch a cold or the flu. You could get some extra cash this month, Gemini. A year bonus or a raise, gift or inheritance from a family member is possible. There could be some conflict with family members over the Holiday plans, but others will encourage you to strengthen ties with those closest to you. Family and career relationships are the main focus. Your work life is in the fast lane right up to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. After the 16th you may be able to relax a little. Until then, complete as much as you can in the shortest possible time. Snap up every opportunity to showcase your talents and leadership ability for those who count.

Cancer (6/21-7/22) You are feeling the urge to travel, but you are advised against it this month and also warned to be very careful while driving on the road. If you want to get away for a few days of love, make reservations at a local luxury hotel rather than chance a delay, cancellation, or accident. It is also possible that an elderly relative will need your help this month. If you can arrange it, stay home and catch up on personal chores in early November. You can accomplish a lot and get a little rest before getting back to work. Your work will accelerate as the month unfolds. Holiday socializing will get off to a fast start. This influence will continue, especially around the time of the Taurus Full Moon on the 13th. Along with all this socializing come plenty of opportunities to meet a new romantic interest. Couples will delight in togetherness right through the Holidays from November 12th on. Your

Life at home is very busy. This could include renovations, repairs, preparing for and entertaining guests, and lively interaction with other family members. It’s a good time to do fall cleaning, get the carpets steamed and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. You can have fun while you increase the enjoyment of your home. If you are doing repairs around the home, it’s important to do some exercise that uses muscle groups differently from the ways they are being fatigued at work. Take a walk or run sometime during the day. You may be more sensitive than you think to fumes from cleaning and construction products. Keep your workspace and home well ventilated. Be extra careful with any sharp or electric tools. In spite of the minor challenges you face with all the activity at home, family life is good. However, in a time of tiredness or stress, it is possible to say the wrong thing. An immediate and simple apology will go a long way toward recreating harmony. You may feel inspired and optimistic as the month wears on. You’ve worked hard over the past year to create something new, and now things are running much more smoothly, feeding in to your big plans for success. Now is the time to let your creative side run free, because it is through what you do now that you’ll discover and later fulfill your greatest potential.

Virgo (8/23-9/22) After the 16th you will be working on some home improvements. Unfortunately this also increases the potential for a domestic mishap, so be cautious in the kitchen and when working with tools. Also, be sure to consult family members before you move forward with a project. They may have some other ideas. Communication will continue to be a strength for you this month, Virgo. But you’ll want to be especially alert and attentive mid-

month. Double-check details and don’t believe everything you hear. Your social life begins to accelerate after the 12th. You also have an extra measure of charisma that’s ideal to attract a new romantic interest or to charm your partner. You’re almost sure to connect with a powerful person, so be alert for opportunities. Money matters and your work life are routine. It is doubly important that you check credentials if you need to consult a professional, especially regarding your portfolio.

Libra (9/23-10/22) You could dive into a major home renovation project, relocate for a job, or establish a home-based business. Consider all the pros and cons before you act. The temptation to make a snap decision will be strong, but whatever decision you make now will play out for many years to come. Home will be your comfiest and favorite place to be after the 12th. It’s a terrific center for entertaining friends and spending time with family. Get your place ready for the Holidays and to possibly list for sale. Evenings and weekends with close friends and family will be among November’s fondest memories. You may want to avoid some relatives, however. Also, someone could try to drag you into a neighborhood or community disagreement, but it is probably best to allow others to fight their own battles. Money matters are mostly status quo, although you should be cautious about investments and putting any funds at risk. This isn’t the best month to sign a contract or to apply for a loan or mortgage. If you want to get ahead, read every word of any contract and seek the advice of a professional, if necessary.

Scorpio (10/ 23-11/22) Be careful if you work around the house this month. What might seem like a simple repair will tend to be far more complicated, despite what a family member or friend may tell you. Call a professional because it will ultimately be less expensive. November brings you a new opportunity, but one that requires change and possibly risk. Be cautious with your financial resources, but remain open to what could be a terrific money making opportunity. You could have a fabulous idea for an innovative product or suddenly realize that a hobby might produce a great sideline income. People, especially loved ones, will take on an added importance over the coming Holiday Season. This influence also emphasizes partnerships and professional consultations; although, you’ll want to check credentials and align yourself only with those who are personally and financially trustworthy. You can expect your finances to fluctuate, especially at the New Moon on the 27th. Unexpected expenses are as likely as a boosted income. Keep your eye on your budget and avoid debt!

Sagittarius (11/23-12/21) November is a plus for finances, career developments and your domestic life. However, you could be prompted to make a sudden, and perhaps unwise, career change. Think carefully if your sights are set on a home-based business, relocation, or an entrepreneurial venture. The success of this will be a toss up, so be sure to get all the facts before making a decision. November is about you, Sag! Get ready to dash through each day after the 16th. Your ambition and initiative will be a dynamic combination, but that can also encourage you to push others too far. Patience will be very much your ally at home, on the job, along with relation-

ships and decision-making. You can expect your social life to take a brief hiatus in November. You’ll be much more inclined to enjoy quiet evenings with your family. Work will take much of your time and talents in the two weeks after the Full Moon on the 13th. You are likely to get a financial boost later in the month. A promotion is possible.

Capricorn (12/22-1/19) Much of your action will be behind the scenes this month. You may be involved in confidential negotiations involving a career move, a legal or insurance matter, or taking a temporary retreat from the world because of a job or school deadlines. By month’s end you’ll be ready to launch a new personal direction. Listen closely to what’s around you that first weekend in November. If you have a chance, socialize with colleagues or talk with a decision maker. You could learn about an opportunity that will be yours by year’s end. See and meet friends who could widen your social and business circles. You might even connect with an old friend or co-worker. Your love life is in the spotlight at the Full Moon on the 13th. Finances are status quo this month, although a friend could ask you for a loan or to make a donation midmonth. Do what’s best for you but don’t expect to get paid back. Also, safeguard your valuables when you’re out in public.

Aquarius (1/20-2/18)

so. Most of all, you Aquarians are in for a prime set-up. Make it happen!

Pisces (2/19-3/20) A major planetary lineup of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus will culminate this month and make their final contacts with each other. All of this will contribute to events that will unfold this month and December. You may align yourself with new people or someone who presents an unusual opportunity, and distance yourself from others. Just be aware that actions taken now are unlikely to be reversed. November is a good month for short-term learning. Take a class or attend a seminar designed to quickly bring you up to speed on the latest job skills, or take a leisure time class, just for the fun of it. Learn to play Bridge. Relationships are this month’s hotspot. You’ll have the right words at any meet-and-greet event around the Full Moon on the 13th. Your career will come into high focus later in the month. You can expect a fast paced environment throughout the end of the year with increased potential for recognition, Pisces, around the time of the New Moon on the 28th. For you the emphasis this month will be on luck and money. Chances are you’ll come out ahead, but with this Uranus activity, all bets are off. You could just as easily gain a windfall as an extra expense—or both. Take a chance on the lottery or enter a few contests around the 10th. Then, cross your fingers! If you’re part of a couple, plan a few evenings at home around the Full Moon on the 13th. The timing will be perfect, as the planets are providing a terrific recipe for romance. If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from Lower back or neck pain, you know how debilitating it can be. Burning, shooting nerve pains and muscles in constant spasm make even the simplest movement an ordeal. Often, just finding a comfortable position is virtually impossible. Traditional treatment starts with medication and bed rest and ends with the prospect of surgery – a painful, expensive, frightening experience. Treatments such as acupuncture, epidural injections, hot/cold therapy, massage and other "therapeutic" techniques may offer limited relief. Considerable research has produced a relatively new therapy that is highly effective in treating intervertebral disc problems. This treatment, known as Decompression Therapy, has opened the floodgates of new patients to Tri County Pain Management and Precision Pain Management Centers. Decompression Therapy is a traction-based procedure that can relieve pain associated with disc herniation, degenerative discs, posterior facet and compression-related syndromes. It also enhances the healing process and renders quick, effective and amazing pain relief that enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle! It is an FDA-cleared procedure, and most insurances cover traction therapy. Decompression occurs as a result of an improved understanding of how to reliably cause the spine to "unload." The vertebral separation causes a vacuum or a centripetal force in the disc, which results in a "phasic change in pressure." This "vacuum effect" helps in the retraction (pulling in) of the extruded disc material. 56 I PhillyFIT

When the disc retracts it can stop putting pressure on the spinal nerve or spinal cord. Thus the term "Decompression." Once the nerve is decompressed, a significant amount of patients will notice a decrease in arm/leg pain. Someone who has previously not found relief through other treatments is a perfect candidate for this treatment. Decompression Therapy may also be useful in determining the overall prognosis of passive care and expediting the phase-in of rehab protocols. Clinical findings suggest Decompression will create a relatively quick initial response. Patients who do well tend to feel a sense of relief (which can be direct pain cessation or a centralization of pain and/or reduction to an ache or stiffness) within six sessions. Full relief, if attainable through this passive treatment, can be in as soon as a few weeks. (Occasionally a "stubborn" pain syndrome may continue to improve slowly over 15 sessions, though this is not the norm.) Often, patients will be treated in 4-6 sessions and notice enough relief to allow active rehab to begin. Their Decompression may continue (pre- or post-rehab depending on the methods chosen) for 4-6 further sessions before discontinuing or reducing the frequency. Typical frequency is 3-5 times per week. The extent and seriousness of the symptoms will determine if more than 3 sessions per week should be used. Treatments only take about 25-30 minutes, and again, most insurance companies cover them. For more information on how you can benefit from the Dynamic Traction System (DTS), call Tri County Pain Management Center 215-957-5400 or the Precision Pain Management Center at 215-657-9393.
