TOP 10 TIPS

FOR AUTO TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS FROM ASE-CERTIFIED MASTER TECHNICIANS:

1. Education, Education, Education – Continue your education and develop strong math, reading, study, and computer skills. A strong background in electronics is essential.

2. Take advantage of on-the-job training, co-op, or apprenticeship opportunities – Get all the training you can and start in a work environment that caters to service and excellence.

3. Keep up with technology – Make a commitment to life-long learning. Technology constantly changes. Take advantage of additional training whenever it is available.

4. Learn a “systems-approach” – Vehicles today are complex. Understand the interaction of electrical and mechanical components within the total system. Think about the whole system and you can apply this across a spectrum of vehicles.

5. Develop good communication skills – Be professional and polish your communication and people skills. Your credibility is linked to your perceived competence.

6. Keep a positive attitude – A positive outlook will help you perform proper repairs. Apply yourself – you get exactly as much out of your job as you put into it.

7. Take pride in your work – Work on every car as if it were your own. Whatever you do, do it well. It’s your signature.

8. Be honest and ethical – Stay focused on what is most important, practice good work ethics, be dependable and honest, and fix it right the first time.

9. Cultivate professionalism in yourself and others – Act professionally, take pride in your appearance as well as in the shop area. Be a positive role model for others. Show up for work every day, on time.

10. Become ASE-Certified – Certification gives you an edge when you seek employment. It improves your confidence and ability to get a job. ASE certification shows that you have proven your technical expertise and you are among the very best technicians.

THANKS TO ALL OUR JUDGES AND VOLUNTEERS FOR THEIR TIME TODAY!

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia (ADAGP) is proud to welcome the best automotive students in the Greater Philadelphia area. At this year’s Philadelphia Auto Show in January, 100 students took an 85-question qualifying exam; the top 24 scorers will compete today. The ADAGP founded this competition in 1994, inviting high school seniors enrolled in automotive programs in the Philadelphia area to compete. The ADAGP, its dealer members and auto industry supporters have developed this competition into a prestigious event and an important part of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation. Each competitor will win something today to help start their career in the automotive service industry including scholarships and hand tools.

The objective of this competition is to increase the number and quality of service technicians available to ADAGP’s dealership members. The need for qualified technicians is dire. Today’s technicians are professionals who can eventually earn as much as the engineers who design the vehicles, with expertise and education that are equally advanced. As will be proven during today’s events, auto technicians must have highly polished math and computer skills, mechanical aptitude, and an eye for delivery detail.

ABOUT US

The Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia (ADAGP) is an alliance of 190 new car and truck dealerships in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania. The ADAGP hosts important meetings, distributes key industry updates, and most recognizably, organizes and produces the annual Philadelphia Auto Show

The Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the ADAGP. The Foundation’s mission is to enhance and enrich the lives of children and youth in the communities where our dealer members work and live. Through our annual New Coat Program, we have provided over 675,000 brand NEW winter coats to local children in need since 2008. We have also raised more than $10 million for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia through our annual Black Tie Tailgate event at the Philadelphia Auto Show.

Created in 1902 and produced by the Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Auto Show has grown into one of the biggest consumer events in the City of Philadelphia, welcoming more than 2 million visitors over the past decade. The show serves as the largest, hands-on marketing event of the year for Philadelphia-area franchised auto dealerships, connecting consumers to the latest product and technology from the automotive industry and influencing thousands of vehicle purchases. Its regional economic impact to the City of Philadelphia and surrounding areas is unmatched.
