Margot Lippert has been teaching in the Nursery School and Kindergarten at Phillips Brooks for twenty-one years! She attended school at Sacred Heart in San Francisco and then earned a degree in F.ducation at Stanford University.

She is married and has three children, two boys and a girl, who are ali married and live in the area. She considers herself fortunate to have close by six grandchildren between the ages of one and a half and six years old. so she always has someone to play with!

Mrs. Lippert loves to garden, and looks forward to spending a lot of time in her own garden after she retires. She also likes to play tennis and cross-country ski, both of which she plans to find more time to do. Her aim for her retirement years is to become a computer expert, to travel more, and to play and play and play with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Lippert thinks the best part of Phillips Brooks is the students and the teachers, and she will miss everyone when she retires. Her greatest wish is that her students will remember to be kind, the most important thing to learn at Phillips Brooks School. Mrs. Thoresen

Kay Thoresen has been a teacher at Phillips Brooks for eighteen years. She has taught children from grade three through grade seven. She earned a Bachelors and Masters degree from the University o f California at Berekety. it's the people that create the magic at Phillips Brooks according to Mrs. Thoresen. and she will miss the students and the teachers when she retires - especially all the laughter!

She has three married children and three grandchildren whom she hopes to see more often during her retirement. She loves to read, to write, to garden, and to hike - all of which she will pursue more in the next few years. She and her husband are going to travel whenever they can, and when home. Mrs, Thoresen will spend much of her time working for her church and the fam ily shelter.

Mrs, Thoresen hopes that students will remember her as a teacher who was fair, and she hopes that she was able to impart on them her love for reading. We will all miss her gentle ways, her quiet voice of wisdom, and the incredibly optimistic view she has of everyone and everything.

We are all better people for having known Mrs. Thoresen! Come back and visit!

Waterfalls

Boats speed in rivers.

Rafts go so fast on water.

Every fish swims.

People jump in the water.

Water and sand make rocks too.

Dangerous Brett Mcgroo was on the prowl. In the westside town of Dustridge Canyon, nothing was safe. Nothing, until I came along. This Brett, like most southerners, was a slimy sleezeball of a burglar - wanting nothing more than to get his hands on some jewelry, and perhaps some aspirin while he’s at it. He was probably the most low down, corny - joke of a federal tax employee that I’d ever heard of. My name’s the Riviera Kid...I’m a Private Eye. I was sitting one night in my office on third street, doing some paperwork when the dame walked in. I first noticed her nose...It was two feet long, and I realized that it was what she had used to knock on the door.

The dame said in an eastern accent, “I got a job for you, Riviera" I replied, “ I don't do theft, cut to the point” (yes, that was really a thin point in the plot - 1 agree) The dame said in a whiny voice, “This ain’t no ordinary getup, Riviera boisterous Brett - Gunslinger extrodinaire is on the loose. He’s shows interest in the ruin of federal government. Particularly the modern Ion cannon. “ “Well, what ya got to pay, I ain't in this for nothin’" Returned I. "A hamburger and a new pack of gum..." she offered.

"Well - sure" I decided.

I set out to find the B man. First I decided on his next target. He would probably strike at the liberal business fund, which had rich aspirin deposits. I figured that he would come down the chimney. Heck, it’s a crazy world.

As I was walking down fourth street, a goon jumped out of an alley way. The goon was huge, with flared nostrils and a body that would practically make king cong look like a twig. Then he sneezed, and everything went black.

I woke up in a dark cell somewhere downtown. Boisterous Brett, my childhood nemesis that I recognized was hovering over me, a ski mask on his head and an imaginary guitar in his hand. Brett was a great athlete, and could probably get the better of me (yeah right). I went for my toothpaste tube, firing it at his feet. Brett slipped on the paste, screaming "NUTRASWEET" as he went down. I unmasked Brett, only to find that it was the dame with the grand-canyon nostrils. Well...I guess Brett is still out there.

Emily’s Key A Ghost Story by Liz Pollack It was Julianne’s first day in the large, eerie house that her parents had purchased. “ Isn't this house great, Honey?” Juliannes father asked her.

“Are there any kids around here to play with?”

“I don’t think so. Sorry, Sport.” “ Great, a whole summer ahead of me and no other kids to play with,” Julianne mumbled to herself before going up the creaking wooden steps to the second floor.

As Julianne walked down the long corridor, she saw something shiny a few feet away. She bent down to pick it up and discovered that it was a penny dated 1904! Surprised and excited, she lifted it up and was about to walk away when she noticed that the wall next to her had a loose panel. She pulled at the panel and squeezed through. She found a vast room with but one window with black velvet curtains. Julianne went to the window which was covered by vines creeping up it hiding the window from the rest of the world. There was a small space which she could see through. When she looked outside she saw that the wind was blowing in all its rage, and the sky wore a dark gray suit. When Julianne turned around she noticed a trunk sitting in the middle of the room. Unlocked, Julianne proceeded to open it. Inside she found a beautiful wedding dress yellowed with age, and an oval- shaped silver locket on a chain.

She opened the locket and saw a picture of a beautiful young woman and a handsome young man.

"How lovely," breathed Julianne.

‘Why, thank you," said a voice next to her. She turned her head only to find the woman in the locket standing next to her. She was wearing the wedding dress in the trunk but it was not aged and yellow; it was a lovely creamy white, her hair was deep brown and pulled back with two little pieces curling down just in front of her ears. Her eyes were a deep, sparkling blue.

‘Tell John that Lucian did it, not Luke!" cried the woman frantically. “ Lucian did what?” asked Julianne.

The woman calmed down a little. “ Who killed me?” she replied sadly.

W ho should I say told me?” questioned Julianne. “ Tell him that Emily told you. Tell him that I love him. “ Who is he? Where does he live?" _ __ “ The white house; over there." Emily pointed out the window.

Julianne was about to ask which white house she was speaking of when Emily said “I must go now thank you.” Slowly Emily began to disappear. “Oh! I almost forgot. Take this key, it will open any door in the house. Goodbye." And with that Emily handed Julianne a fancy silver key, and then faded away.

Julianne proceeded to the white house across the street with caution. After a moment of hesitation Julianne walked up to the porch, took a deep breath, and rang the doorbell. She saw an eye look through the keyhole and then heard a wobbly voice say through 3 the door,” Go away. “ “Please sir, I have a message from Emily.”

Sitting in the darkness with one bit of candlelight burning beside her like the first rays of sun shining on her in the morning. She would behold my father quietly and smile. I never got to meet her, but I feel her smile rising on my lips, too. t?

©She lived in Mexico without electricity, and was always careful with everything she did. First thing in the morning she cooked sayunar over a cozy fire while my dad watched her, his mouth watering. She gave birth to my three aunts, grateful that they were all born healthy. Then she said, "The last child is going to be this one." So she had her fourth girl child; but something was wrong. She got sick and died; God said it was her time to go. <2She was always brave and strong and always will be, even in her death.

The only boy she had was my father. She loved him with all her heart, so one day her spirit floated like a feather by my father. He never saw her again, but he feels sure that her spirit is inside of him. I stand tall like my grandmother and, like my father, her spirit fills my corazon.

The Shattered Glass Sara Watts He stood quietly in his room looking out at the slaves through a perfectly clean window. Imagine, Robert S. Perry III, the only son of the biggest plantation owner in all of Georgia, feeling sorry for slaves. Then Savannah, the cook, yelled,” Come an’ eat, Robert. Suppa!”

Robert stood for a while, lost, until he realized what Savannah had said. He took one last look at the workers below then turned, walking quietly downstairs.

The next morning Robert dressed and headed to the kitchen. He always woke up early and ate breakfast with Savannah and her daughter, Penny. His parents didn’t like him socializing with the slaves, so Robert kept it a secret. Every day he ate two breakfasts: a feast of pancakes, eggs, and waffles with Savannah and Penny in the kitchen and just a roll with his mother and father in the dining room. All throughout the day he and Penny snatched moments to talk down in the fields with the workers where his parents didn’t dare go. This particular night, Robert’s father called him into the smoking room and sat him down. “Son, you’re almost eighteen now and I have been grooming you all of your life to take over the plantation. From now on, you are going to follow me in my daily responsibilities and learn how to run this business.”

The next day came, and Robert woke up at five-thirty as always. This morning Robert looked up and saw his father standing above him,"Get up boy, it’s a big day for you!”

Robert dressed, but today he missed both breakfasts. His father took him around the plantation explaining the details of what a plantation owner has to do. For some reason all his workers looked at him differently when his father was with him.

At about five o’clock his father led him inside for supper. Robert sat down but was shaken by the sound of a crash from the kitchen. “Robert,” his mother commanded, “go see what that is.”

“Yes, mother,” Robert replied.

Robert went in to the kitchen to investigate. He peered down at the floor and saw shattered china and glass. Then he gazed up and saw Penny in tears stuttering, “I’m so sorry. Robert, I tripped and dropped the tray.”

Robert knew that this meant she would be whipped. As he realized it his father glared at Penny and shouted, “This means a beating!” Then he continued, “Robert, I want you to do it, and then I’ll know you are ready.”

But Father,” Robert stumbled.

Do it, boy!” shouted his father, “Go into the shack and give her five good lashes.

Robert staggered into the shack with Penny and choked, “I can’t do this, Penny,” as he turned and walked away, off the plantation forever.

Waiting in the noisy plane to leap into the air like a bird, he held back nervously in the doorway before he plunged to his glory.

His courage finally .pushed him through the opening and into the clouds. The wind rushed into his face and a million things raced through his mind. He had never felt so invigorated. He pulled the chord and jerked shakily until he came to a float. As his feet hit the ground he ran along the runway, the strings pulling and jerking at him, causing him to tumble to a halt.

A salamnder crept through the forest intent on destroying the human race. Suddenly, George Samarkand appeared on the scene; slowly, the salamander slithered towards George. Little did George realize that this was a Kung-Fu salamander. (Dun Dun Dun) The salamander sprang towards George with a flying kick of burning death. George noticed his attacker but it was too late, the salamander whackd him in the knee. George toppled to the ground in a heap, he reached into his pocket and grabbed an acme ant call to call the ant the ant marines. The salamander crawled on top of George in victoiy, when all of a sudden the ant marines marched in firing their wepons at the salamander. The salamander, smacked by an olive, was decapitated.

George thanked the ants and streaked towards saftey, when he spotted a giant salamnder with in his eyes and a bazooka. Andrew Gerbil was lying dead next to him. The salamnder advanced slowly wishing to destroy George.

The Dairy C o urth ou se Today, when I was going to milk the cows on our dairy farm, I saw a big cow that looked like a fat, deadly, angel, but it was Fat Mooman.

Next to her was another deformed cow who called herself Cadame Cowler. When I saw them, I started to run down the trail to the statue of a general, formerly known as Moe Cowells. I ran past him to the dairy courthouse, and arranged a trial against Fat Mooman. When we were all together in the courthouse the trial began. Everyone in the courthouse was dressed formally. Judge Kleenex came out and yelled, order! order!

Someone in the back of the courthouse yelled out,"Judge Kleenex has knocked out one of the jurors with her big nose!" It turned out that the juror is in a coma. About an hour after that we started the trial again.

Judge Kleenex said to bring out the envelope that had a picture of me getting scared o ff by Fat Mooman and Cadame Cowler. Everyone screamed at the picture, so Judge Kleenex put it back into the envelope. Fat Mooman and Cadame Cowler were put in jail because they looked so ugly they would scare everyone out of the town. When everyone was all ready to go I saw something. From an angle it looked like a comma, towering in stature. Oh no, it was Judge Kleenex, but she was really a big nose shaped like a comma. Watch out! She's going to sneeze! Ahhhhchewwww.

And that was the last of the Dairy Courthouse.

WHO

ARE

CLASS HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1996 N U R S E R Y S C H O O L Mrs. Dulik, Mrs. Trick, and Mrs. Young were our teachers.

“Shake, shake, shake your giggles out!” was the daily mantra gleaning minimal results. Liz forgot to wear underwear on the first day of school and had to borrow someone’s extra pair (but she has remembered ever since). On hot days we would get our bathing suits on and the teacher would soak us with the hose. Jewel hunts rule!

Kim left her favorite green bear at school overnight and has barely recovered from the trauma seven years later. David Merrill had romance in his eyes, but turtles were better company. There was a constant fight over who would play with Courtney. Snuffy would go home with a special friend. We learned how to be kind (most of us).

KIN D ER G AR TEN Mrs. Lippert and Mrs. Jory were our teachers. There were morning papers and cut 'n' paste and cut ‘n’ paste The most brilliant ones even learned how to read. Mrs. Lippert talked to us a lot with the bunny. Snack time offered Graham crackers and milk. Mrs. Lippert had the honor of sending Pat to the office for the first of a multitude of visits. We had the “Think Tank” on Special Friend Day which would hold a mystery object we brought in and the class would guess what it was. It was the special friend’s privilege to sit next to the teacher (now it’s not such a privilege ). The biggest honor was to switch the “yesterday today, and tomorrow” signs on the calendar. We went to chapel with sixth grade partners (Sarah Oehm’s class). Inevitably, the frogs got lost, but it was a very good year.

FIRST GRADE Miss Harrison was our teacher, and Kari Barber, Andrew Negus and Russell Powell joined the class. We had a pet rabbit named Thumper who dies , agically of a heart attack at Betsy’s house (but she is NOT a rabbit murderer). We went to the Exploratorium for the first time with the fifth graders. Also, it was the first year for us to wear full uniforms and stay until 3:15. We had nap time on mats, but usually we talked (that hasn’t changed, but we don’t get naps anymore). We went to chapel without partners. We had reading with Mrs Pot. Miss Harrison was spotted being romantic with her boyfriend which everyone thought was cool. Our first Student Council representatives were Kari & Russell, and Sara & Chris. In the School Musical we sang a German song, and Patrick MacKay was a visual treat in lederhosen

GRAD E Charlie and Hanae joined the class and Mrs. Woodbridge was our teacher. We spent a lot of time preparing for Dino Day, our major event! We sang songs to senior citizens at Rosenor House and went to the pumpkin patch at Halloween. In class we had Mr. Koosh Man, and Mrs. Woodbridge would throw him to us and ask us a question. We also had Star of the Week and the Magic Wheel (for math). Pat cried when he earned three strikes and had to visit Miss Root’s office A lot of people ran away, and one time Geoff made it all the way to Safeway where Mrs Negus (our truant officer) found him. There was a worry bird to whom you could tell your worries, but they were just little worries then.

Mrs. Peck was our teacher.Dylan replaced Stuart Charlie had a crush on Anjuli. Our projects in third grade included the puppet show, our Endangered Species report, and the Indian research and play. We had timed tests for multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition, Chris and Betsy won second place in the National French Contest! We were slaves picking cotton in the spring musical Brad puked on Austin’s shoe in front of the whole class - a true delight Most of the girls visited Miss Root’s office for fighting with each other, and Pat visited again for some not-so-lovely vocabulary. It was our first year with Stan Drake, and the year was really cool with the Stumpers and the 500 Club.

THIRD GRADE

FO U R TH G R A D E This was our first year being in the upper grades, and, led by Mr. Sherman, we explored new territory like Special Fridays, basketball, and extended boundaries. Alden came back that year. We studied California for which we went to Coloma, made relief maps, went to Mission San Juan Batista, and wrote mission reports. Miss Davidow was with us for the first two quarters, which was really cool, but we had the couches taken away, which wasn’t so cool. We stopped playing in the bushes, and instead we dug outside of the classroom with sticks. We had some crazy crawfish who ate each other and left their tank to explore the recycling bin FIFTH G R A D E We were in Miss Davidow’s first official class! We had the honor of the Christmas pageant roles and singing in the choir. Kim and Charlie were a bit of an item. It was really hard to memorize our speeches for the Wax Museum, but it seemed to pay off for Brad since he charged seventy-five cents and made a total of $3.00 for the day - his first successful business venture! Brett and Davey had to sit next to the bathroom on the way to Sacramento which was an odorous treat. Laura visited our school, and little did we know she would be the new addition to our class in sixth grade.

SIXTH G R A D E Deep thought: Sixth grade is the chocolate dessert of the dinner of life (but Brett only likes vanilla.) A very exciting year! First, Betsy had the audacity to leave for a semester to go to school in Virginia, but fortunately, she came back in January! "The Phantom Tollbooth” was almost taken to Hollywood. It was brought to the attention of Laura Leemon, our new addition, that she had fat socks. The fifth and sixth grades traveled to Yosemite where everyone became MUCH closer. Pat almost had to kiss Davey as a result of saying his name so much. Yosemite and the Riviera Keed were named. Pat was attacked my a mysterious article of clothing. Andrew was “pantsed" by Kim. Major hikes to the top of Vernal Falls, while Russell offering snuggles all the way up the mountain. Truth or Dare and Spin the Bottle... Sara the social chairperson arranged many a gathering. Chris and Russ will stay another year in sixth grade for insulting Madame and Paul Newman on their weight problems.

(Sacrilegious.) Davey had Madame for dinner (tasty?) Geoff and Davey entertain with outrageous spelling stories. Kari and Austin Tango on ice. Liz takes second place for scarey story contest. The girls come in second in volleyball, outshining the boys, but the boys really recover during basketball season, losing first place by a mere hair FAMOUS QUOTES: Schnozz! (All) NC Rules. Dylan Alegria will become president of Thumbs Anonymous (dial 1-800-DILBERT for immediate assistance) and make his first million on anti-thumb products designed for the modern intellectual. He will ultimately rule the world with four-fingered dragons after seven long years of drudgery trying to teach traditional grammar o Kari °B arber will skate in the Olympics, which will be held in Menlo Park in the year 2021, with a unique program of violin on ice (for which she will earn the gold).

In the off-season, she will be a karate instructor, and then culminate her performance career as head of the technical staff at Lucas Productions.

Chris Carter will finally say something nice to Madame Miller, and be the oldest sixth grader to ever graduate from P.B.S. Actually, since he is a Leap-1 ear baby, he will probably be just the right age! He will have a short, disastrous career writing sitcoms for television about the sordid past of Paul Newman. He will then move on to president of the United States, to add another Carter to the list with the sole intent of confusing future sixth graders who will have to memorize quite a long list!

Alondra Cervantes , after earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for having hair as long as the Great Wall of China, she will cut her beautiful hair as short as Russell’s and sell it to Macy’s wig department for a tidy sum. She will make so much on the sale that she will be able to retire quite young to do nothing but write poetry and contemplate sunsets.

Kim Ciardella. as a result of her extensive experience, will earn the title of “Operator of the Year” for Pacific Bell. She will make so much money by inventing a Winnie-the-Pooh honey-coated cereal with a touch of extract of malt flavoring digger’s favorite food, doncha know), that she will buy her way into an interview to become Brad Pitt’s secretary (and of course she will be hired and work there happily ever after!)

Alden Conner, the environmentalist, suffering years of guilt over massive consumption of Kleenex, will invent a handy pocket-sized machine that blows your nose for you, eliminating the need to produce Kleenex at all (thereby saving millions of trees. For this achievement, she will receive the Goldman Environmental Award and a huge hug form the Lorax. With her new leisure time, she will join the San Francisco ballet company and dance away the rest of her years.

Aniuli Curia , while auditioning for film, television and stage, will support herself by opening a successful key chain company, creating all sorts of things to hang from a backpack which squeak, pop, and flush. In addition, she will become a fashion consultant for the dowdy elementary school teachers who have never learned how to dress with style. No, she will not grow any taller..

Betsy Glynn will return to Virginia where she will play professional soccer. No one will dare to call her Betsy-Wetsy anymore, but she will establish legal games rooms on the East Coast called “Bets-a-lot" where many former P.B.S. graduates will lose a lot of their money. She will continue to giggle every time someone makes a foolish bet and loses a tidy bundle!

Geoff Hunt will finish the 75th volume of his epic series started in elementary school. He will buy Apple Computer and rename it “Pear Computer” with double screens to encourage people to work in “pairs” (get it???) pears/pairs!) Ultimately, as a rocket scientist, he will exit the hum-drum existence of Earth and tesseract into another dimension where he will continue to grow and be taller than almost everyone and every thing in his new community.

Austin Koo will win the pairs event of the 202'l Olympics, skating into stardom with his faithful and talented partner, Kari Barber. He will retire to Switzerland where he will run a training center for children in skiing, figure skating, ice hockey snow boarding, and projectiles. He will dismiss a brief urge to become a monk and live in silence, but he will at least have the most pristine vocabulary in history.

Laura Leemon wiii be the manufacturer of ultra-fat-socks'which will be a fashion craze that lasts for 25 years. With tnem she will open a successful chain called “Sockit-to-’im”, with a franchise in every- major U.S. city. She will continue to perform

professionally as a concert pianist, visiting her P.B.S. friends all over the world. She will, of course, marry a younger man.

Davey l.ipa will turn down a wrestling contract to star on a late-night television show called “Riviera Keed” where he will read his spelling paragraphs for the rest of eternity, permitting Mr. Carey to breathe more easily now that his job is not threatened by the computer wizard “Lips”.

Rat MacKay will be a Wimbleton Champ at age 13 and dominate the French Open at 14. His laugh will force him into early retirement, where he will pursue a leisurely profession as movie expert on a call-in radio show where he can advise nervous mothers about the appropriateness of all the latest films for their little darlings.

Courtney M urfit will be a fashion consultant for the rich and famous. She will find Eeyore’s lost tail and make him smile (an unknown Eeyore tiling to do). She will be the first female pitcher on the San Francisco Giants and Madame will be there for every home game to cheer her on. During the off-season she will sing in a band with her brother Colin and sister Cameron which will far outshine the popularity of the Partridge Family!

Andrew Negus will swim in the 2021 Summer Olympics which will be held in Alden’s back yard. He will win a gold and a bronze, but Hanae will beat him in the backstroke. He will attempt to secure a position on the “Baywatch” program by emphasizing his British royalty (“Prince Andrew”, doncha know), but will give up when he discovers that Pamela has had a facelift and liposuction.

Lizabeth P o lla ck will pursue a successful career on stage in New York, but will return ultimately to the bay area as a very old woman to start a call-in television show called “Dame Talks-a-lot”. She will dispense advice to the lovelorn and will create a dating service through her television interviews. She will even arrange a date for Madame Miller with Paul Newman.

Russell Powell will be the first to be married from the class of ‘96 to dispel any rumors started about his incredible beauty in women’s clothes (w'hich he wears so well!). He will continue with basketball, of course, and will win five NBA championships. He will cut short his potential career with Chip ‘n’ Dale when he discovers it’s not the chipmunks at all.

Hanae Rios will swim in the 2021 Summer Olympics, and will have the honor of beating Andrew in the backstroke by 33 seconds, breaking a world record at the same time. She will become quite loud, and will be temporarily expelled from The San Francisco Art Institute for being too noisy. Her art will not suffer this momentary lapse, though, and her work will be displayed in the finest galleries.

Brett Seawell will, of course, be an NBA superstar, after struggling at North Carolina where the light blue of the jerseys clash with his eyes. Our 37-year-old towhead will briefly consider taking the lucrative coaching position at Duke University, but his pride will simply not permit such capitulation. His feet will grow to such an incredible length, that athletic shoe companies will vie for his photographs for publicity. lessica Suttle , as she becomes more and more subtle, will reach higher and higher goals in gymnastics. At age 37 (in the year 2021), she will be the oldest gymnast to perform in the Olympics, but because she won’t grow at all, no one will know she is so old. She will start a national campaign for respect for short people (heightchallenged people) and will speak all over the country, carrying with her a wooden box so that she can see over the podium. She will be the first girl in the class to be married.

Bradley T en n is, with his special Tennisshoe name, will challenge Pat at Wimbleton, even though he doesn’t play tennis at all. The public will be charmed by his rodentesque demeanor, And won’t even notice that he misses the ball every time.

He will continue to create miniature communities on his desk, with bridges and towers and cows, and will sometime soon be discovered by the Smithsonian Institute.

Sara Watts will spend a brief time with rainbow hair, creating a new fashion craze in the new century, at which time she will be discovered for foreign films. She will perfect her Spanish and perform in quite a few Spanish-speaking films. She will open a dating service to bring sweet young people together, both English and Spanish speaking. She will go on *He dates as chaperone if the two speak different lanauaees.
