ABOUT

Sung Hyun “Phillip” is an architectural designer based in Los Angeles, California. He has professional experiences including internships, projectbased working, exhibitions and competitions. He has won design awards and worked for high-rise, office, museum, residentials, and military facilities. His works focus on architectural expressions from geometries, materials, light, and time.

He received B.Arch. from Yonsei University in 2016 and moved to the US to pursue his M.Arch.2 at SCI-Arc. In 2015, Phillip worked at SOA as a project based architectural designer. He participated in 1784 project to research and develop schematic designs for a future Start-up Incubator which was a high-rise building. In 2013, he participated in a design competition for Helsinki’s new Guggenheim Museum as an intern when he worked at Yong ju Lee Architecture. During his service in Republic of Korea Air Force in 2010, he worked as an architectural assistant for two years. In the base, he was in charge of contracting, designing and supervising sites of dormitories and igloos. He has instructed architectural tools in several workshops and led student atelier “Question n”.

Currently, he successfully completed his thesis project at SCI-Arc.

When we see buildings and use them, an individual experience generates a rememberable image(s) spontaneously. A building generally gives a coherent image, and the experience can be captured by

a single photograph. This is so normal that we often do not notice that in actual experience, we see

something other than a photograph of a famous building. However, wouldn’t it be interesting to try and design a building that resists simple iconography?

My strategy however is not to avoid iconography completely. That would be banal. Instead, the goal is to avoid simple iconography. My strategy here is to produce a field of partial icons, and see if a messy

The Italian artist Giorgio Morandi said, “There is nothing more surreal and nothing more abstract than reality.” Implicit in this statement is that reality is constructed. I would go further and say that the building blocks of constructed reality are images that can be a part of the image of the city. So why would we be satisfied with one image?

In Baroque or Renaissance, it was general to use image making tools in architecture designing. As an example, atmosphere of hall way or courtyard, and even architectural aesthetic value in structures can be delivered through certain kinds of images. However, in modern architecture, architects focus on form or a value of the form or design process itself.

The project is not about a form. So it is not about Formalism. But as you can see many segmented objects, it is about a sequence of the small spatial episodes. I believe segmented sequence of the images constructs our individual’s imagination about the space such as dark, bright, wind, site plan

The icons are similar with small buildings in a city. We have images of LA, but cannot compress them in a single image. Segmented urban experiences generate an image collection which is so personal. The project is not a Disney concert holl in a post card. I expect it is mixed with other urban images as a platform to connect two splited towns. Icons are positioned on the site in Hoboken NJ, and they are mutated based on architect’s imagination of specific atmospheres.

Furthermore, the main entrance is not defined.

The copper masses are embedded in the host. They are not pieces to make the negative spaces but have an important role in articulating the host and making a vertical relationship with the ground.

The interlocked copper masses create the negative space. The host hides most parts, and they are self-supported by twisting while keeping their continuity.

The copper masses articulate a simple box. The box functions as a part of ball joints. The interlocked masses create the negative space.

The mass is embedded in the host, and it is rotated based on the limited rotation axis.

The result from the rotation is implied on the other host of positive space, which exists as subtracted surfaces on the host.

The void is created by the several copper masses, holding the positive ball joint that is attached to the copper host.

The piece is created by a rotation based on the limited ball joint axis, and these two masses mainly function to hold the ball itself.

Generally, a ball joint has no specific axis for a rotation, but a deformed ball has only one rotational axis to limit the rotation of the masses.

A literal ball is attached to the copper host that is positive space. The ball is twisted with the masses, acting as the main joint to connect two hosts.

As the same mechanical relationship of the original object, the object is interlocked with the ground. The lifted main volume creates architectural tension between the ground and the building. The second volume that is a transformation of the original object is positioned while wrapping the front mass and following the site contexts. The gaps create seams on the surfaces. They could be used as a crease for natural sun-light for office space.

Within the building boundary, there are different scales of empty spaces. Those unprogrammed gaps provide in-depth architectural experiences.

Three masses are surrounding the ball joint by interlocking with different joint conditions such as facing, penetrating, or maintaining gaps.

The main circulation is penetrating the entire mass while connecting separated pieces. Its glazing articulated facade is tightly integrated with neighboring geometries.

The project explores a dark back alley of literality. A neglected principle of interpretation and production, literality is considered as the guiding principle of the project ‘Stamped Lion’. In contrast to a typology, a species constantly mutates. Where others use words like ‘typology’, we practice words like ‘species’. While others study for catergories, we investigate for metamorphosis. For the project, we architecturalize the natural and naturalize the architectural. But we are going to stay literal. We are eager to see if staying literal could present a new way to radicalize the idea of autonomous form. Mutating design is an advanced strategy for articulating the form; however, it does not escape from the tradition. If the traditional architecture is a coded response to achieve the beauty, the metamorphosis and mutation of tradition cultivate new aesthetics. The site is located at the edge of the city of Rosario, Argentina, which is known for the boundary between urban and rural contexts. Stampede Lion is new power station supporting the city infrastructure and contributes to the community as a flower field. Literal cliches are copied and rearranged with encrypted sequences to create chances for generating new architectural species.

STAMPEDE LION; Literality of ClichĂŠs

Rosario is located in the Province of Santa Fe, Argentina, and the project is sited at a boundary between Rosario and Granadero Baigorria, between urban and rural context. It is a vast open field and surrounded by residential areas and the Parana river. As an infrastructure, the project builds power station for the city of Rosario. However, at the same time, it provides a flower field as a public facility to adjacent communities.

The field needs cavities for plants and spaces for the maintenance. On the site, the field creates a vibrant, distinctive, and iconic landscape with remarkable shapes and unique materials. The infrastructure is integrated with the public attractions, and it makes the machine-centric architecture, or infrastructure, no more a parted from human life.

A species continually mutates which needs a defined lineage since it comes from other things. The project mutates architectural element ‘arch’ and natural element ‘lion’ which shamelessly exploits its clichés. Clichés are tiresome, but people have been constantly using them. In Stampede Lion, the clichés are going to stay literal, but mutated into new clichés.
