‘Smuggling in Essex’
VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR MEMORIES I confess to finding all these all these National and International Commemorations, Anniversaries and Celebrations decidedly confusing and admire Her Majesty for the way she keeps on stoically attending them, shaking hands and having something to say to everyone she is introduced to. Mind you, I did think she looked as though she had dozed off in the recent service in St. Paul’s Cathedral. I hope it’s not an act of treason to wonder how good her memory is as she approaches 90. I was known for my brilliant memory which operated effortlessly and got me through many exams. I do miss it now, getting stuck mid sentence for that elusive word. It seems intent on deceiving me by allowing me to use the words I love, only to block a key word at the moment of needing it, too late to work my way round. For weeks I struggled to remember the name of a tree in my garden. Each time I tried to remember it “mahogany” popped up but I knew it wasn’t that. It was only when I finally thought “cheap talcum powder and soap” that “Magnolia” finally surfaced. After this struggle, it didn’t do very well producing only nine flowers on that very hot day. They opened so wide they exhausted themselves and promptly fell off. Now every time I catch sight of it, “Magnolia” pops into my mind. On a “Memory” course, run by the Alzheimer’s Society, they explained how the facility to remember/recall is built up in early childhood using all the senses and that for some people one or other of these senses may dominate. With me it’s the visual sense. If I see something written down it’s in there – alas no longer forever! One explanation of these blips in memory is that, as we advance along our own personal time-lines, we accumulate so many experiences and it’s the process of sifting through these that takes longer. So be patient with yourself and your synapses. Let’s help one another. If only I had asked someone what my tree was, I would have saved weeks of uncomfortable struggling.
