September Newsletter 2015 - 2016

From the Principal Dear School Community, It is always surprising how fast one gets into the new school year— we’re already 4 weeks in! Parent Night, Movie Night and Culture Week have already passed and new students have settled into their classrooms. Our Middle School started smoothly this past September too, marking a great step for the school to provide our students and parents the opportunity to stay longer at the Deutsche Schule Kobe/European School. We are now preparing for our biggest non-academic, traditional event:Oktoberfest, coming up on October 10th. Our school has a history of over 100 years, and can be credited for introducing Oktoberfest to Japan more than 60 years ago. Next month we are looking forward to having Parent-Teacher-Conferences. These conferences are important for parents to learn about their children’s progress in school and for teachers to gain insights into their students’ home and community lives, as well as parent perspectives. Parent–Teacher Conferences are an important aspect of ongoing home–school communication and family involvement in the school. In October, we will have the first meeting of our newly elected PTA members. As Principal, I am very grateful for our active parents. If you are interested in having more responsibility at our school, there will soon be vacancies that need filling on the Board. You are welcome to offer your candidacy. I wish everybody a beautiful autumn! With very best wishes,

Gerhard Lebherz, Principal

Events - Sports Day
Great weather, great competition, great success! After practicing for almost 3 weeks our students were ready to go and quite excited about this years Sports Days. All students showed great effort in 7 different disciplines: javelin, ball throw, marathon, rope skipping, high jump, long jump and finally the sprint race. Our parents and teachers had the chance to join the sprint and piggy back race too. After performing on such a high level all families came together on the playground to eat lunch and finish the event with the award ceremony. A big Thank You goes to all the helpers!

Who knew brushing our teeth could be so much fun? Today's inquiry was all about our teeth. What are they made of? What's inside them? Why are they hard? What do we use them for? What does a hole mean?

Grade 1

It’s been a fun-filled start for the First Graders. The children have all settled well into class and have had a busy and productive start to the year. Never short of energy and enthusiasm, the students have really enjoyed learning our unit on Getting Along. To see their eager minds and smiling faces when confronted with various challenges has been richly rewarding.

Grade 3

Grade 3 had a race to make a four digit number in the thousands to create the tallest tower in groups. Some groups got creative and decided to use the 100s to represent 1000. How tall can the groups build to make the number 1222?

The students were given various Y/N questions to answer by jumping to the ‘yes’, ‘no’, or ‘maybe’ sections of the room. Questions are connected to our UOI and dealt with the students’ personal beliefs. Grade 5

In this activity we pretended to be a statue. Ms. Straube said different feelings and we needed to use our body to express it.This time it was” exhausted”.It was fun because our class had different faces and body expressions! It was difficult to freeze like a statue. It was a fun activity! -Lu

This activity was fun because we used drama to express our central idea and know what the central idea means doing it with our own body. I learned very well because we used our own body to learn. -Ryusei
