Note: This newsletter reflects the exciting events and activities taking places in some of the classes and school. Each month we will showcase ‘authentic’ learning.
From the Principal Dear Parents, The school year`s biggest event, Oktoberfest, is over, leaving an afterglow of smiles. It was a very successful event – not only as a fundraiser, but also because the cheerfulness of the organizers and helpers was so infectious. Visitors to the school commented on the wonderful atmosphere and expressed their appreciation of having an opportunity to participate in the Oktoberfest, which has become a venerable tradition at the school – this year`s Oktoberfest was the 60th celebrated at DESK! The lighthearted cheerfulness shown on the big day by all those involved in the preparations should not make us forget that this success was due to the incredibly hard work and dedication of the parents. A very special Thank you to the Oktoberfest team, who sacrificed time and energy to make this year`s fundraiser a huge success and an enjoyable event. For a small school, every event – as well as every school development project – represents a big task. If these tasks are shared and everyone makes a contribution, even in a small way, we will be able to go far. Thank you for being involved, even though it may not be easy to juggle a busy work schedule, family responsibilities and involvement in school activities. Best regards, Ursula Shioji School Board News On Oct. 19 the General Assembly of the School Association took place and new Board members were elected. The new Board members are: Mr. Günay, Mr. Henrich, Mr. Imanari, Mr. Izquierdo, Ms. Siloske, Mr. Tillier, Mr. White, Mr. Yates and the principal. With deep appreciation for their services to the school I would like to thank all the leaving Board members: Dr. Nitz, who had been on the Board for many years and, as Chairman of the Board, was instrumental in ensuring the smooth move of the school from Rokko to Rokko Island as well as the transition to Gakkou Houjin status. Dr. Stange, who oversaw the school finances and made sure the financial foundation of the school would be sound. Mr. Moore, who faithfully recorded the minutes of the Board meetings and was in charge of the school buses and building-related matters. Mr. Eckhart, whose Human Resources expertise was very valuable to the school as an employer.

die größte Schulveranstaltung des Jahres, das Oktoberfest, ist vorbei und hat freundliche Erinnerungen hinterlassen. Es war eine sehr erfolgreiche Veranstaltung – nicht nur als Fundraiser, sondern auch weil die gute Laune der OrganisatorInnen und HelferInnen so ansteckend war. Besucher und Besucherinnen der Schule haben mich auf die wundervolle Atmosphäre angesprochen und sich dafür bedankt, am Oktoberfest teilnehmen zu können, dessen Feier an unserer Schule sich nun schon zum 60. Mal jährte und das somit zu einer ehrwürdigen Schultradition geworden ist.
Die Fröhlichkeit und gute Laune aller, die an den Vorbereitungen für den großen Tag beteiligt waren, sollten uns nicht vergessen machen, dass dieser Erfolg auf der unglaublich harten Arbeit und dem großen Engagement der Eltern beruht. Ein ganz herzliches Dankeschön dem Oktoberfest-Team, dessen Mitglieder Zeit und Energie geopfert haben, um dem diesjährigen Fundraiser zu einem Riesenerfolg zu verhelfen und das Fest zu einer vergnüglichen Veranstaltung für Groß und Klein zu machen.
Für eine kleine Schule ist jede Veranstaltung – wie auch jedes Schulentwicklungsprojekt – eine große Aufgabe. Wenn diese Aufgaben geteilt werden und alle einen Beitrag leisten, auch einen kleinen, dann werden wir weit kommen. Danke, dass Sie mithelfen, obwohl es sicherlich nicht immer leicht ist, die tägliche Arbeitsbelastung, Familienpflichten und Engagement für die Schule unter einen Hut zu bringen. Vorstandsnachrichten Am 19. Okt. fand die Mitgliederversammlung der Schulstiftung statt und neue Vorstandsmitglieder wurden gewählt. Die Mitglieder des neuen Vorstands sind: Hr. Günay, Hr. Henrich, Hr. Imanari, Hr. Izquierdo, Fr. Siloske, Hr. Tillier, Hr. White, Hr. Yates und die Schulleiterin. Mit der größten Anerkennung für die Dienste, die sie der Schule geleistet haben, möchte ich allen scheidenden Vorstandsmitgliedern danken: Herrn Dr. Nitz, der viele Jahre lang Vorstandsmitglied war und als Vorsitzender entscheidend beim reibungslosen Umzug der Schule von Rokko nach Rokko Island und bei der Umstellung auf den Gakkou Houjin Status mitgewirkt hat. Herrn Dr. Stange, der als Schatzmeister für die Schulfinanzen verantwortlich war und sicherstellte, dass die Schule auf einer gesunden finanziellen Grundlage aufbauen konnte. Herrn Moore, der bei den Vorstandssitzungen das Protokoll führte und auch für die Schulbusse und alles, was das Schulgebäude betraf, verantwortlich war. Herrn Eckhart, dessen Expertise in Personalangelegenheiten für die Schule als Arbeitgeber sehr wertvoll war. Ihnen allen ein herzliches Dankeschön!

The Five Senses Investigation As part of our inquiry on The Five Senses, our classes joined together in a day of investigation of our five senses. Parents were invited to be fooled by our 'student senses experts', who created booths with a variety of activities. ¨ Aktivitaten in der klasse Grade 3 - 4 DS
Zum Start ins neue Schuljahr arbeiteten die Schüler der deutschen Klasse 3/4 in den Fächern Sachunterricht und Ethik an einem Klappbuch (im englischsprachigen Raum oft “Lapbook” genannt) zu Rittern und Burgen. Mit viel Eifer arbeiteten die Schüler an den unterschiedlichen Themen. Dabei konnte jeder in seinem individuellen Tempo arbeiten und sich nach seinen eigenen Fähigkeiten und Interessen entsprechende Aufgaben wählen. Auch die äußere Gestaltung der einzelnen Teile des Klappbuches bestimmten die Schüler zum Großteil selbst. Neben vielen Büchern aus der Bücherei nutzen die Schüler auch das Internet für ihre Recherche. Auch im Deutschunterricht griffen wir das Thema Ritter auf und arbeiteten an Rittergeschichten und lasen etwas über das anstrengende Leben eines Mönches. The 5 Whys is a simple problem-solving technique that helps you to get to the root of a problem quickly. Made popular in the 1970s by the Toyota Production System, the 5 Whys strategy involves looking at any problem and asking: "Why?" and "What caused this problem?" Very often, the answer to the first "why" will prompt another "why" and the answer to the second "why" will prompt another and so on; hence the name the 5 Whys strategy. Benefits of the 5 Whys include: • It helps you to quickly determine the root cause of a problem. •
It's simple and easy to learn and apply.

Sankt Martin - november 9th 2012 The Feast of St. Martin Background: On St. Martin’s Day people in Europe (but also in Latin America, for instance) celebrate St. Martin of Tours, who is famous for his kindness and generosity. The best-known legend of his life is the sharing of his cloak with a beggar: Martin cut his cloak in half, gave one half to a beggar and so saved him from freezing to death. St. Martin’s Day coincides with harvest time: the new wine is ready for drinking, animals have been butchered to provide meat and sausages etc. In a way, St. Martin’s Day is a kind of Thanksgiving. In Germany roasted goose with red cabbage and potato dumplings is the traditional St. Martin’s dish. St. Martin’s Day also marks the beginning of winter and of Christmas time. Customs: At school, in kindergarten or at home children make paper lanterns and then go from house to house, singing St. Martin’s songs and asking for sweets. Sometimes an adult, dressed up as St. Martin, rides on a horse in front of the lantern procession and there is a bonfire. Traditionally children receive a bun called Martinsweck or bun shaped like a little man.
