October Newsletter 2015 - 2016

From the Principal Dear School Community, With the change of season, we are getting ready to transition from autumn to winter festivities, but before going on, I’d like to reflect on this past month’s achievements. In October, we held our Parent-Teacher-Conferences, a very important aspect of our status as an IB School. We highly value the involvement of parents in a child’s educational path, and we thank you for your open communication, conversation, and perspective. Our goal of lifelong learning would not be possible without your support and encouragement of the children and teachers. In October we also held our 63rd annual Oktoberfest. As a school community, we can be proud of our committed parents and various helping hands who made this event a success. The school received very positive feedback and even people who had never been to our school before walked away impressed by our warm family-like atmosphere. I would like to express my strongest thanks to all supporters, including the many generous sponsors who donated wonderful gifts for our raffle and tombola. Thank you! It makes me proud to be a part of this beautiful and unique school. Please check our school calendar and prepare for the many events coming up in November. Wishing you the best,

Gerhard Lebherz, Principal

Early Years

The children began the concept of ‘Show-and-Tell’ with September and continue doing it everyday. For the Blue Team this is an entirely new way of sharing! They are doing a great job talking about their belongings and letting their friends see the kinds of things they love and have at home. Great communication skills, Early Years!

Pre School

In maths we wrapped up our transdisciplinary work on the Unit of Inquiry, by practicing telling the time to the hour. Preschool mastered this with a lot of enthusiasm, showing how knowledgeable they are! They played games, became the clock’s hour hand, used hula-hoops, all to help consolidate their knowledge. By now it’s safe to say that we can rely on them to be on time from now on…

Grade 1

In our unit, the first graders enjoyed acting out different scenarios on treating others and making a music video singing the song “RESPECT“. In presenting their acts, they were all enthusiastic and full of confidence. Indeed, this unit taught them many things about understanding people’s feelings and behavior.

Grade 2

Most of our feelings can be sorted into four "zones". When we are happy, calm, and ready to learn, we are in the green zone. When we start to get silly, distracted, upset, frustrated, or too excited, we are in the yellow zone. When we are angry, out of control, mean, or mad, we are in the red zone. When we feel sad, sick, tired or hurt, we are in the blue zone. When we notice we are not in the green zone, we need to stop and take a break. We choose a strategy to help us go back to the green zone so that we are ready to learn again. This is called self-regulating!

Grade 6 & 7 At the Deutsche Schule Kobe/European School, we celebrated our historic middle school launch on Wednesday, October 21st for the whole school community. After introducing life in middle school with a video created by Grade 6 & 7, the children, parents and faculty of the school visited various booths hosted by the middle years students. The Middle Years kids also prepared iced sugar cookies as a gift for the school community to enjoy as they visited the booths.
