The Newsletter - January Edition 2014 - 2015 From the Principal

Dear Members of our School Community, 2014 has come to an end and not only was it a successful year but our school is growing!! In April 2014 we had the highest enrolment ever! 2014 was a year of courageous decisions by the Board. As a result, much money was invested in modernising ICT and acquiring new books. Salaries were made competitive to ensure that we have highly competent teachers who feel motivated to stay in our school. And, with decisions taken at the last Board Meeting in December, our school is ready to open a Middle School in September 2015. In 2015 we expect to continue this positive development! I am sure we will have a great and challenging year ahead with strong and outstanding support from our parents and our highly motivated students and teachers. I want to thank everyone for the great support and spirit to make our school unique and I wish all of you a most successful and happy New Year. Best wishes, Gerhard Lebherz

Middle School Our School Board made a historic and courageous move to open a Middle School to start in September 2015. The discussion about a Middle School had been ongoing for a number of years in our school. This decision gives our parents more security about the placement of their children. As a very successful Primary Years Programme School we will offer an attractive continuation of our strive for excellence up to Grade 10 as a future MYP school. Our school will have a Grade 7 starting in September 2015 and will eventually go all the way to Grade 10. Climbing Wall Construction started

After a lot of planning, preparing and scheduling the climbing wall team finally started their work on Sunday morning. Led by the architect Akira Yamaguchi we demolished the stairs on the right side of the main deck and moved them to the north deck. Also the metal worker came in and did some final measurements.

Early Years & Grade 1 Students from Grade 1 came downstairs to visit as “buddy readers.” Separated into groups of 2 and 3, they read stories to the younger children. It was a great chance for Kindergarten to practice their listening skills. We were really happy to see them engaged in story time!

Pre School

What a nice way to end the week with a parent visitor, Adam's dad or Mr Hasko who talked to us about his job as a pilot. He had a great bunch of slides he showed us about how he does his job and answered our many questions we had about a pilot's job, planes, airports and the people he works with like the co-pilot and the flight attendants. A special thanks to Mr Hasko for taking the time to visit us and answer our many questions, we learned a lot! Grade 2

In our last unit, we explored the different meanings of the word "home". Throughout our inquiry, we created "mobiles" to show our new learning. Each part of the mobile represents the many things that we feel is our home. For example, a house, city, country, the earth, or even the solar system are all things that we could call our home. As we kept learning, our mobiles kept getting longer and longer! Since one of our key concepts was "change", at the end of our unit we showed what we would like our home to be like when we are all grown up!

Grade 3 & 4

The grade 3/4 and Pre School classes collaborated on a project which invited all the students in the school to cut out and decorate 'helping hands' for a school collage on the wall going up the main staircase.
