The Newsletter - June Edition 2014 - 2015 From the Principal Dear Members of Our School Community, The month of May passed by quickly. Time flies when many interesting things are happening. Our students in Grade 5 and 6 impressed all with their Exhibition. As you know, we currently have no final exam before students leave our school; however, the Exhibition is like an exam because it requires students to showcase the skills and knowledge they have gained at our school. We had a weeklong “Celebration of Books,” during which the children read many stories and participated in small class events. It is our understanding that books should play an important part in the lives of our students. We had two evaluators come from the IB too! They visited classes, interviewed members of the school community, and studied our collective documents. We were pleased as a school to be complimented on our library, both well-organized and stocked with books of various languages. For the first time in the history of our school we hosted the Association of Foreign Schools in Hyogo. As our school is active member of the community, it was very exciting and inspiring to have all involved principals visiting our school. For the event, the Deutsche Schule Kobe provided German beer and German potato salad, which was very much appreciated. We also had a successful Open Day. We asked all visitors to participate in a survey-- 30% of the visitors came because of our new Middle School, opening September 2015. As usual, there was an overwhelming positive impression of our school facilities, our educational concept, and our professionalism. However, asked about the physical size of our school, it was not unexpected to have some critical responses. It is quite clear: We need more space. That's why we are all looking forward to opening the new school building! It will be nice to have the extra land available come March or April next year. In addition, we are looking forward to having our next Oktoberfest on October 10th, 2015. We have a lot to prepare and we need members of our community to help and participate. Below is a brief message by Jacquiline Haydon, a member of our Board:

Dear Parents,

As you know, every October we hold our most important event of the year, OKTOBERFEST. It is a great day for our school and our community. Not only is it a fun day for the children and our biggest opportunity to showcase the school atmosphere to potential new families, it is also the P.T.A’s major fundraising day. The wonderful parents of P.T.A. work all year organising events for the children and supporting the school in many ways. Every year the P.T.A donates a portion of its funds to the school in the form of “a lasting gift.” The climbing wall is an example of this. It is for those reasons above that we need everyone in our school community to contribute in some way to making this day a success. There are numerous ways in which you can be involved and do your part for the school and your children; for example, volunteering on the day, volunteering for preparation/clean up, donating baked items, donating raffle prizes or funds to be used for raffle prizes, as well as donating foods and beverages to be sold on the day.

I wish you a beautiful June and hope to see everyone on our last day of school on June 26th at our great Good Bye Party.

Best wishes Gerhard Lebherz, Principal

Early Years We here in Pre-Kindergarten are so happy that it has warmed up outside. On sunny days, we have been having fun splashing in the water, scooping up animal toys and blowing bubbles. This is yet another example of play-based learning in action!

Our unit with the central idea "our uniqueness is expressed in creative and artistic ways" is nearly coming to an end. We looked at some artwork by Pablo Picasso and realized that he created art using a style called cubism. One side of the face is viewed from the side, and the other side is viewed from the front. We decided to express our emotions using this technique.

Information Dear Parents,

Some of you may remember the sakura flea market which was held in the spring every year at the old school premises. Many people attended and had the chance to either sell their unwanted treasures, or buy some at a reasonable price. It was always a pleasant day with opportunities to mingle and chat with other families.

The school would love to see the flea market day resurrected and become a regular yearly event. As the flea market has not been held for some time, we are not certain when the most convenient time would be but we would like to try it out for the first time before the end of the school year. If we are able to attract at least 10 families who would like to have a booth we will hold the market in June.

The date we have set aside for the market is SATURDAY 20th JUNE 12:00pm - 3:00pm.

Hopefully, this will be sufficient time for everyone to clean out their closets of all the interesting items they have to sell. As this is the first time to hold this event, the usual 2000 yen booth fee has been waived for this year, so don’t miss this opportunity. It is also the last day of Saturday school so hopefully we will have many customers. Even if you aren’t planning to sell something come along anyway and see what is on offer.

To apply to have a booth please contact the office and for those who just want to shop, just come on the day!!

WHAT: AJISAI FLEA MARKET WHERE:THE PLAYGROUND WHEN: SATURDAY 20TH JUNE TIME: 12:00pm~3:00pm BOOTH FEE: FREE! HOW TO APPLY: CONTACT OFFICE WHO CAN ATTEND: EVERYONE!
