Aquí en un pequeño pueblo de Costa Ballena nació la iniciativa Libre de Plástico de un solo Uso, ésta se encuentra en pleno desarrollo en la zona, De aquí fue llevada a la cumbre del MedioAmbiente 2018 en Nairobi (Kenia) donde cayó como anillo al dedo ya que la UN estaba celebrando el Año de los Océanos Limpios. Otras naciones se están uniendo a la acción para eliminar el plástico de un solo uso, el sector turismo ha acogido la propuesta de manera especial. Febrero 28 – Marzo 3, 2019 – Envision Uvita Un Evento Libre de Plástico de un solo Uso. Envision está colaborando con la iniciativa “Limpiando Osa”, el equipo inició la tarea el 12 de enero de 2019 en Playa Colonia (pág. 52). El micro plástico (busque el artículo en nuestro sitio web), se está transformando en un problema que amenaza la cadena alimenticia y puede destruir el medio-ambiente.

The Single-Use Plastic Free Initiative was born in a small town in the Costa Ballena and is now in full development. Nuestros muchachos en Argentina... Mundial de Rafting

mpezamos el viaje volando hacia Chile, desde allí conducimos hasta Aluminé (Argentina) donde se realizó el evento. Fue una experiencia llena de alegría para nosotros ya que no conocíamos la nieve. En Aluminé la gente nos recibió muy bien. Nos hospedamos en un lugar maravilloso con unos paisajes únicos con montañas cubiertas de nieve. El clima no estuvo a nuestro favor ya que eran temperaturas a veces a menos 2 grados a lo cual no estábamos acostumbrados. Llegó el gran día de nuestro debut en el mundial. 16 equipos lucharon por ser el número 1 a nivel mundial. Nuestro equipo logró colocarse entre los 8 más rápidos del mundo en la categoría de spring (primavera). Súper emocionados llegamos al segundo día de la competencia con ganas de llegar más lejos, es cuando empezó la lucha del H2h (head to head) o uno contra uno. Rumania fue nuestro primer rival y logramos pasar al frente. Nos esperaba Rusia, potencia mundial con un equipo fuerte y de carácter muy rudo. Logramos vencer a los rusos. Era un sueño hecho realidad ya que por primera vez en la historia un equipo tico se metía entre los 4 primeros del mundo. Al frente nos esperaba Japón con unas de las mejores técnicas de remado del mundo. Nuestro equipo no avanzó a la final pero logramos un cuarto lugar. El tercer día de competencia era slalom, nuestro favorito y nuestro fuerte y lo hicimos súper rápido y fuerte sin embargo no logramos la medalla. El último día llegamos fuertes con ganas de traer esa medalla por la cual habíamos entrenado por meses, no obstante no fue nuestro día; con mucha lluvia, frío y sin el equipo adecuado quedamos de octavos en el down river. Fue un mundial lleno de emociones, alegrías e incertidumbre si lograríamos ganar una medalla. En el camino dejamos buenos amigos y buenas historias que contar. Ahora nos toca seguir entrenando duro por ese sueño de ser los #1 del mundo! ■

Our Guys in Argentina ~ World Rafting Competition

e started the trip by flying to Chile; from there we drove to Aluminé (Argentina) where the rafting event took place. It was an experience full of joy for us since we had not experienced snow. The people received us very well. We stayed in a wonderful place with unique landscapes and snow-capped mountains. The weather was not in our favor since temperatures were sometimes at minus 2 degrees which we weren’t accustomed to. The great day of our debut in the world cup rafting arrived. 16 teams fought to be number 1. Our team managed to place itself among the 8th fastest in the world in the spring category. Super excited, we arrived at the second day of the competition wanting to go further. That is when the H2h (head to head) fight or one on one began. Romania was our first rival, and we managed to move forward. Russia, a world power with a strong team and very tough character was waiting for us. We

managed to beat them. It was a dream come true because for the first time in history a Tico team was among the top 4 in the world. Japan was ahead of us with some of the best rowing techniques in the world. Our team didn’t advance to the final but we achieved fourth place. The third day of competition was slalom, our favorite and our strength. We were super-fast; however, we did not win the medal. The last day we arrived ardent with desire to win the competition for which we had trained for months. However it was not our day; with a lot of cold rain and without the right equipment, we finished eighth in the down river. It was a world championship full of emotions, joys and uncertainty if we could win a medal. On this journey, we left with good friends and great stories to tell. Now we have to keep training hard for that dream of becoming the # 1 in the world! ■

Pajaritos enojados

n una película de pajaritos enojados en Costa Rica el protagonista principal sería el llamativo Barbudo cabecirrojo (Eubucco boucieri). Esta pequeña ave con solo 15 cms provoca sentimientos encontrados, ya que su brillante cabeza escarlata llama la atención, asemejando a una cara humana redonda y roja de enfado. Solemos encontrar a estas aves, curiosamente emparentadas con los tucanes, en elevaciones superiores a los 900 msnm, aunque a veces descienden hasta los 750 entre octubre y febrero, por lo que casi cada año recibimos su visita en nuestro Corredor Biológico Alexander Skutch. Las aves no tienen expresión facial, pero sí podemos observar sus necesidades en los movimientos de sus ojos y su pico. Al inicio de la época de lluvias podemos ver jóvenes pichones abriendo el pico para pedir comida a sus progenitores. También los colores en las plumas inspiran sentimientos. Con sus máscaras faciales, los momotos (Momotus lessonii), como el mielero verde (Chlorophanes spiza) y el mielero azul y negro (Dacnis vetusta) parecen auténticos bandidos. Otras aves con tonos suaves, como las viuditas tienen un aspecto más afable y social, llegando siempre emparejadas parloteando. Son aves monógamas que tienen la misma pareja toda su vida. También hay aves que a primera vista inspiran temor por su rareza. Es el caso de los nictibios o pájaros estaca. Estas son aves nocturnas que se alimentan de insectos y ululan con un lamento Uuuuuuuuh- uh-uh-huu… que asemeja un triste llanto. Sin embargo son aves inofensivas, que tratan de pasar desapercibidas con su plumaje de camuflaje de palo, para poder descansar durante el día sin riesgo de ser depredadas. Cada especie puede aparentar ser, o tener un temperamento, que puede estar relacionado con su comportamiento. n a film of angry birds in Costa Rica the main protagonist would be the striking Red-headed barbet (Eubucco boucieri). This small bird weighing only 15 cms provokes mixed feelings, since its brilliant scarlet head draws attention, resembling a round, angry red human face. We usually find these birds, curiously related to the toucans, in elevations higher than 900 meters above sea . Although sometimes they subside to 750 between October and February. So almost every year we receive their visit in our Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor. Birds do not have facial expressions, but we can observe their needs in the movements of their eyes and bills. At the beginning of the rainy season we can see young pigeons opening their beaks to ask for food from their parents. Also the colors in the feathers inspire feelings. With their facial masks, momots (Momotus lessonii), such as the green honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza) and the Scarlet-thighed Dacnis (Dacnis vetusta) look like real bandits. Others with soft tones, like the Blue-gray tanager have a more affable and social aspect, always making palsy chats. They are monogamous, having the same partner all their lives. There are also birds that at first sight inspire fear by their rarity. It is the case of the nictibios or Potoos. These are nocturnal birds that feed on insects and hoot with a wailing Uuuuuuuuh- uh-uh-huu ... that resembles a sad cry. However, they are harmless birds, which try to go unnoticed with their stick camouflage plumage, to be able to rest during the day without risk of predators. Each species may appear to be, or have a temperament, that may be related to its behavior. They can inspire the human beings to reflect on emotions common to our human nature. ■

a visión del artista siempre va más allá del ojo de los simples mortales. Veamos el caso del pintor Vincent Van Gogh, quien comenzó su carrera artística a la edad de 27 años, creó 900 cuadros y 1600 dibujos, con una técnica de impresionismo única no comprendida en su época y logró vender un solo cuadro durante toda su vida. Hoy día sus obras tienen un valor incalculable. Muchos pueden nombrar a grandes artistas a lo largo de la historia y también artistas reconocidos de nuestro tiempo y pocos pueden mencionar a nuestros artistas de la localidad. Los avances tecnológicos, el materialismo, el consumismo y muchas veces la inconciencia nos mantienen alejados de lo nuestro y aprendemos a valorar sólo lo que viene de fuera. Esto invisibiliza a los que desde aquí tratan de hacer grandes cosas. Así pues, les contamos en esta ocasión sobre un artista costarricense muy cercano a nosotros: Gibrán Jalil Tabash González. Nacido en San José, emigró a la zona sur en busca de un lugar más tranquilo para desarrollar su estilo artístico y sin duda lo está logrando. Sus obras invitan a la reflexión, a la toma de conciencia, al actuar y al trabajo personal de cambio, una tarea necesaria en estos tiempos. Gibrán es más conocido por su obra “Forjadores del Valle” un complejo de 4 esculturas (2 bueyes gigantes, el campesino y la campesina) ubicadas en el parque central de San Isidro de El General, elaboradas con 500 kilos de papel reciclado y una técnica desarrollada por él mismo a lo largo de los años. Además, el artista cuenta con murales, pinturas (más de 300), esculturas y 13 exposiciones, entre ellas una en el extranjero, en Suiza en el 2015. Su particular estilo para pintar asombra a quienes se enteran que del todo no hace uso del pincel, sino que chorrea de forma maestra la pintura contenida en botellas y poco a poco va dando vida a sus cuadros. ■

n artist’s vision always goes beyond the eye of a mere mortal. Let’s observe the case of the painter Vincent Van Gogh, who began his artistic career at the age of 27. He made 900 paintings and 1600 drawings with a technique of unique impressionism not understood in his time and managed to sell only a single painting throughout his life. Today his works are invaluable. Many people can name great artists throughout history, but few also recognize artists of our time and less can identify our local artists. Technological advances, materialism, consumerism and often unawareness, obscure us from our own. We learn to value only what comes from outside, suppressing those who try to do great things here. Now, we’ll take the opportunity to tell you about a Costa Rican artist very close to us: Gibran Jalil Tabash González. Born in San José, he immigrated to the Southern zone in search of a quieter place to develop his artistic style. Without a doubt he is achieving it. His works invite reflection, awareness, action and a personal work of change, a necessary task in these times. Gibrán is best known for his masterpiece “Forjadores del Valle” a complex of 4 sculptures (2 giant oxen, and a couple of peasants) located in the central park of San Isidro de El General, made with 500 kilos of recycled paper. He developed this technique over the years. In addition, the artist has murals, paintings (more than 300), sculptures and 13 exhibitions, including one abroad in Switzerland in 2015. His particular style of painting amazes those who find out that he does not use a brush, but masterfully drips bottled paint which gradually gives life to his paintings. ■

La manera correcta de apagar una fogata es con agua, de lo contrario seguirá encendida, la arena lo que hace es mantenerla y la convierte en un peligro, como ya ha sucedido cuando un niño sufrió quemaduras en sus pies al caminar sobre una fogata “apagada” con arena. La legislación del país no permite fogatas en las áreas protegidas ni en las playas en general, por favor sea un turista responsable y respete las leyes. Que el único rojo fuego que se vean en las playas del parque sea de los atardeceres de verano, disfrutemos sanamente de los espacios naturales! ■

Bonfires at the Beach?

fter a busy year of 2018, summer and the holidays have arrived, along with days of sightseeing and rest. The canton of Osa and specifically, the district of Bahia Ballena is one of the most visited sectors by national and international tourism. The Ballena Marine National Park (PNMB) offers exuberant natural wealth, marine life, scenic beauty, quiet beaches, waterfalls and rivers. The park has one of the most famous geographical formations in the country; the Tail of the Whale or Uvita tombolo. Thanks to its attractions, it is one of the most visited national parks in the country. Unfortunately, some visitors disrespect the regulations established for their conservation and enjoyment. One of them is the prohibition of bonfires. They seem harmless and are almost a fixed activity at any beach in the country; however, they are a latent danger everywhere.

In the summer season the surrounding vegetation is dry. It is very easy for a fire to expand, causing forest fires and endangering people, wildlife and buildings near the park. If they remain lit, sand stays hot, and if a person or an animal treads the incandescent coals, they may suffer from strong burns. The correct way to extinguish a fire is with water, otherwise it will continue burning. Sand retains the heat, making it dangerous. Previously, children have been injured while walking on a flame that has been extinguished with sand. The country’s legislation does not allow bonfires in protected areas or on beaches in general. Please be a responsible tourist and respect the laws. May sunsets be the only red fire seen on the park’s shores. Enjoy healthy natural spaces! ■

Dos de las más bellas son la boa esmeralda de la cuenca del Amazonas (Corallus batesii) y la pitón del árbol verde (Morelia viridis) de Nueva Guinea, Indonesia y la península del Cabo York en Australia. Ambas especies están altamente adaptadas a la vida arbórea en las selvas tropicales. Estas serpientes no son venenosas, pero sí tienen dientes muy grandes, más grandes que los del constrictor promedio. Estas herramientas les ayudan a agarrar aves, murciélagos, lagartos y roedores. Inmediatamente después de que enroscan a su presa con el cuerpo se contraen para estrangularla. Las serpientes tienen una cola prensil que les permite alimentarse en los árboles. La presa es detectada por sus escamas termosensibles o fosetas labiales. Esta es una gran ventaja para estos reptiles nocturnos. La reproducción también se da sobre el suelo del bosque. La diferencia es que las boas son vivíparas o sea paren crías vivas. Las pitones, que son ovíparas, ponen huevos y necesitan encontrar un sitio de anidación. La madre enrolla los huevos para protegerlos y criarlos. Para ello puede elevar la temperatura de su cuerpo. Ponen hasta 30 huevos y pueden tardar hasta 60 días en incubar. Las crías de la misma camada pueden ser rojas o amarillas. Los bebés de las boas de esmeralda son rojos y nacen después de 5 a 6 meses. Cuanto más crecen, más cambian de color. Después de un año todos se convierten en pequeñas joyas verdes. Se llama cambio de color ontogenético. Ambas de estas magníficas especies de serpientes tienen una forma específica de descanso. Enroscan unos cuantas de sus anillos alrededor de las ramas y colocan sus cabezas en el medio. Buena manera de pasar el rato en las copas de los árboles. ■

Two of the most beautiful ones are the Amazon Basin emerald tree boa (Corallus batesii) and the Green tree python (Morelia viridis) from New Guinea, Indonesia and Cape York Peninsula in Australia. Both species are highly adapted to an arboreal life in rainforests. These snakes are non-venomous but they do have very large teeth, larger than those of the average constrictors. These tools help them to grab birds, bats, lizards, and rodents. Immediately after the prey is wrapped in their body coils and constricted. The snakes have a prehensile tail that allows them to feed in the trees. The prey is detected by their heat-sensitive pits, or labial pits, in their lips. This is a big advantage for these nocturnal reptiles. Breeding also occurs above the forest floor. The difference

is that boas give birth to live young, called viviparous. The pythons, which are oviparous, lay eggs and need to find a nesting site. The mother will coil around the eggs to protect them and brood them. She can raise the temperature by shivering her body. They can lay up to 30 eggs and it can take them up to 60 days to hatch. The hatchlings of the same clutch can be red or yellow. The babies of the Emerald tree boas are all red and born after 5 to 6 months. The faster they grow the more they change their color. After 1 year they all turned into green little jewels. It is called ontogenetic color change. Both of these magnificent snake species have a specific way of resting. They loop a few coils around the branches and place their heads in the middle. Nice way to hang around in the treetops! ■

ecently Florex opened a branch in Daniel Flores of Pérez Zeledón. «Our products have very little impact on the environment», explains Doña Silvia, Florex’s vice-president. Since 2005, she and her husband have been pioneers in implementing green solutions in the area of sustainability in Costa Rica. Based in San Jose, FLOREX is a Central American company which develops, produces and distributes biodegradable ecological detergents. Founded in 2003, it is the first organic factory in Costa Rica. Its philosophy is to offer products and services that have the least possible impact on the environment. The company has received numerous awards, among them: 2009 FLOREX award for environmentally-friendly production; 2011 award for social responsibility and sustainability and 2013 honorary award from the Chamber of Industry in the environmental category. In 2008 FLOREX was recognized by the Ministry of Environment and Energy as an institution committed to the «Neutral Carbon Plan» initiative. This has led the company to change its production, distribution and marketing standards considering climate change. In 2012, FLOREX began a research process with the National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio) to develop its ingredients from natural extracts of Central American biodiversity in order to use natural rather than artificial active ingredients. FLOREX

products are biodegradable, incorporating several chemical elements, including carbon. During degradation, these products begin to decompose by the action of air as well as by microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria. Recently they have made an alliance with EcoColones, the first virtual ecomoneda that gives value to sustainability. It is granted in exchange for valuables that are separated and taken to recycling through an incentive system in which they can be exchanged for discounts on sustainable products and services. Doña Silvia concludes: “We are proud to leave a legacy for future generations.” ■

Happy Feet Celebrates the New Year!

appy Feet Ballet & Performing Arts School in Dominical, Costa Rica is excited as we celebrate the new year of 2019 full of exciting new opportunities in the Performing Arts for our local children and teens in the Costa Ballena Pacífico Sur! Happy Feet, Directed by Heather Gamewell, is excited to launch the new community arts and music programs Happy Hands and Happy Notes as well as prepare for many exciting events throughout 2019! Events such as our Zona Sur International Dance & Musical Theater Intensive January 14-18, 2019, hosting world renowned teachers in Ballet, Dance, Musical Theater, and Drama! As well, Happy Feet Students are busy preparing to participate in the International Festival De Ballet in San José in May 2019 in which they will be competing, performing, and officially representing, for the first time in history, our Costa Ballena in the Classical Performing Arts! n nuevo modelo de economía está surgiendo desde las personas que aman la tierra, que crean con sus manos en pequeñas empresas familiares. Cada día más se unen al concepto de “Economía Circular”, apostando por una oferta local, reduciendo la contaminación asociada al consumo de productos transportados desde lugares lejanos. Así nos hacemos más responsables del impacto ambiental que genera nuestra alimentación. Poco a poco se empiezan a crear más espacios donde existen compromisos en crear Iniciativas Libres de Plástico, además de la reutilización de desechos. Lugares donde las personas se benefician mutuamente, con un impacto positivo para el planeta. Cada día nacen más espacios en Costa Rica con estas características y especialmente en esta zona, un ejemplo son las Ferias del Agricultor. Estos espacios vienen a refrescar el panorama social, convirtiéndose en un punto de encuentro para las familias de nuestra zona, al mismo tiempo se perfilan como una atracción para el turismo en el área. Se han consolidado como lugares donde nuestra comunidad ha podido desarrollarse más en temas como el acceso a alimentos de calidad a precios accesibles. Eco Feria Camino Real Dominical, es parte de esa visión, aplicada para generar un nuevo comercio más humano y más sustentable. Creemos en el agricultor como parte central de esta revolución. Su amor al cultivar, el uso de semillas originales de nuestra madre tierra con el cuidado adecuado y libre de pesticidas, son motor de cambios energéticos importantes en la humanidad y el medio ambiente. Hemos creado este espacio considerando valores como la Iniciativa Libre de Plástico y Agroquímicos, allí tendrá un contacto directo con los productores locales, que traen productos variados: medicinas, terapias y muchos manjares que llegan al consumidor gracias a la organización ciudadana. La Eco Feria Camino Real se lleva a cabo cada viernes de 8:30 am a 2:30 pm, en el Anfiteatro Patrons, en Dominical. ■

Eco Fair Camino Real Dominical, is part of that vision, applied to generate a new, more humane and more sustainable trade. We believe in the farmer as a central part of this revolution. Their love to cultivate, the use of original seeds of our mother earth with proper care and free of pesticides, are the engine of important energy changes in humanity and the environment. We have created this space considering values such as the Free Initiative of Plastic and Agrochemicals, there we will have direct contact with local producers, who bring varied products: medicines, therapies and many delicacies that reach the consumer thanks to the civic organization. The Eco Fair Camino Real takes place every Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, at the Patrons Amphitheater, in Dominical. ■

Puedo Nadar

I Can Swim

e encanta involucrarme en programas locales y comunitarios. También me encanta cuando se discute un proyecto necesario, que luego pasa de un pensamiento a una realidad. El año pasado conocí a Dainen, el propietario de Fuego Brew Co. en Playa Hermosa. A menudo compartimos con los guardavidas la necesidad urgente de clases de natación en esta área. Vivimos donde hay agua por todas partes: ríos, piscinas, cascadas y el Océano Pacífico. ¡Pero, no había lugar donde alguien pudiera aprender a nadar!. En Noviembre, la amiga de Dainen, Molly, vino de visita desde los Estados Unidos. Parte de su agenda era llevar a cabo un curso intensivo para enseñar a un grupo de increíbles voluntarios cómo dar clases de natación. Molly es una instructora profesional de natación y prácticamente ha vivido en el agua desde los 3 años! En Diciembre, una docena de futuros instructores se capacitaron con las habilidades necesarias para enseñar a estudiantes de todas las edades. El nuevo programa de natación tuvo el placer extremo de celebrar estos entrenamientos y las clases públicas en la hermosa piscina del Hotel Villas Rio Mar en Dominical. La administración de Rio Mar fue increíble ofreciendo generosamente el uso de sus instalaciones para que el programa pueda realizar clases públicas mensuales. El 10 de Diciembre, tuvimos nuestra primera clase de PUEDO NADAR. La tripulación no tenía idea de qué esperar y lo que sucedió fue INCREÍBLE. Aparecieron más de 50 estudiantes de todas las edades, desde niños pequeños hasta adultos. ¡No podríamos haber estado más contentos con el resultado y todos se divirtieron aprendiendo a nadar! Estamos muy agradecidos a todos los participantes! Únase a la página de Facebook de PUEDO NADAR y manténgase al día con el programa de lecciones. Last year at Playa Hermosa, I coincidently met Dainen, the owner of Fuego Brew Co. Often we talked with the lifeguards about how we desperately needed swimming lessons in this area. We live where there’s water everywhere-from rivers, to pools, to waterfalls, to the Pacific Ocean. Yet, there is no place that anyone can learn how to swim. In November, Dainen’s friend Molly, organized a visit from the United States. Part of her agenda was to conduct a twoday, intensive course to teach a group of awesome volunteers how to give swimming lessons. Molly is a professionally trained swim instructor and has practically lived in the water since she was 3! On December 8th and 9th, a dozen «teachers to be» were empowered with the necessary skills to teach students of all ages. The new swim program had the extreme pleasure of holding these trainings and the public classes in the gorgeous pool at Hotel Villas Rio Mar in Dominical. The administrators at the hotel were incredible and they generously offered the use of their facilities for the program to conduct monthly public classes. On December 10, we held our first PUEDO NADAR class. The crew had no idea what to expect, but what happened was AMAZING. Over 50 students of all ages showed up, from toddlers to adults. We couldn’t have been happier with the turn out and everyone had fun learning how to swim! Huge gratitude to all participants! Parece que el drenaje del agua se sigue pasando por alto. A medida que pase el tiempo, se abordará también el exceso de velocidad. Dominical resolverá los inconvenientes que trae el pavimento, pero en general la ciudad está agradecida por la actualización y justo a tiempo para la temporada de vacaciones. El propósito del pavimento es la facilidad y limpieza. Sin el barro y el polvo, la ciudad seguramente brillará atrayendo más visitantes y negocios para los residentes locales. La pavimentación de la carretera es sin duda un hito en la historia de Dominical. ■

Dominical ahora tiene una calle pavimentada que va desde la entrada principal hasta el ICE. La una vez soñolienta ciudad de surf ahora está siendo atravesada por una calle asfaltada. Si bien algunos se opusieron al pavimento por una supuesta pérdida de encanto, muchos anticiparon la mejora. Hace poco más de nueve años, los residentes locales recuerdan la emoción al saber que la carretera costera que une Quepos a Dominical había sido pavimentada. Años después surgió la idea de pavimentar también la calle principal de Dominical. El inconveniente de mantener el camino de tierra ha sido que las empresas frente a la calle estaban luchando contra el barro y el agua de las lluvias o contra nubes de polvo en la estación seca. Los dueños de negocios debían esforzarse constantemente para mantener sus lugares limpios. Ahora esta molestia será eliminada. Permite que el tráfico pase a través de la ciudad sin los agujeros que solían amenazar los ejes. Entonces, ¿cuál es el inconveniente? Los carros a toda velocidad, el drenaje y el miedo a perder la vibra de un pueblo de playa. Afortunadamente, el bulevar de la playa tiene adoquines de ladrillo y mantendrá un aspecto más natural.

A Milestone in the History of Dominical

hile some will long for the days of dirt roads, much of the town feels this upgrade is overdue and is excited for what the change will bring in the high season. Dominical now has a paved road leading from the main entrance down to ICE. A once sleepy surf town at the end of a dirt road has now a paved road leading through it. While some were opposed to the pavement for a supposed loss of charm, many have been heavily anticipating the improvement. Nine years ago local residents recall the excitement of learning the Coastal Highway linking Quepos and Dominical was to be paved. Years later the idea of paving Dominical’s main street was brought forth. The issue with keeping the road dirt as it’s always been is that businesses fronting the road were either battling with mud and water from the rains or dust clouds in the dry season.

Business owners were constantly fighting to keep their places clean. By paving the road, this hassle will be eliminated. It allows for traffic to pass through town without axel bending pot holes. So what´s the downside? Speeding cars, drainage and fear of losing the sleepy beach town vibe. Fortunately the beach boulevard has brick pavers so it will keep a low-key and more natural look. Drainage for all the water seems to continue to be overlooked. As time passes, hopefully speeding will be addressed. Dominical will work out the flaws the pavement brings but generally the town is grateful for the upgrade and just in time for the holiday season! The purpose of the pavement is for ease and cleanliness. Without the mud and dust, the town will surely shine, attracting more visitors and business for local residents. The paving of the road is certainly a milestone in the history of Dominical. ■

La vida de Shawnell Lisa Parker

hawnell Parker, quien en septiembre de 2018 cruzó el «Puente Arco Iris», fue honrada por la comunidad de DAWG celebrando un memorial en Roca Verde. En cada comunidad existen algunas almas especiales, personas que son «conocidas» por todos por lo que hacen; sin embargo, poco «conocidas» por quienes son. En Costa Ballena, Shawnell Parker fue una de esas personas. Conocida por todos por su trabajo en DAWG, Shawnell era una líder de la comunidad. Lamentablemente nuestra comunidad perdió a esta increíble mujer y guerrera icónica por los animales abandonados o heridos. Shawnell era una mujer increíble con una historia de vida aún más increíble. Nacida en San Francisco, viajó y vivió en lugares como Hawai, Kenia, Líbano, Munich, Guam, Viena, Roma, Atenas, Australia, Río, por sólo nombrar algunos. Como consultor de gestión de IBM, Shawnell se sintió afortunada de experimentar la cultura de tantos lugares únicos. Después de años de arduo trabajo, Shawnell y su amado es-

Como todos aquellos que están llamados a un propósito superior, Shawnell finalmente fue nuevamente a las trincheras, cuidando a los animales que más lo necesitaban. Todos los rescates que hizo anteriormente, probablemente fue en preparación a su función de presidente de DAWG) durante 10 años en Costa Rica,. Shawnell amaba a su familia y sus amigos. Ella adoraba a sus siete nietos y era una esposa dedicada y amorosa. Amaba a sus bebés peludos y la alegría que dieron. El espíritu de Shawnell es tan real como lo somos nosotros, y seguirá estando presente en cada acto de ternura que demostremos a los animales que tanto amaba. Shawnell Parker será extrañada y nunca olvidada. Por favor considere hacerse voluntario para llenar la enorme brecha que dejo Shawnell. Hay infinitas posibilidades. ■

hawnell Parker who in September 2018 crossed the “Rainbow Bridge,” was honored in December when the DAWG community held a memorial at Roca Verde. In every community exist a few special souls, people who are “known” by all for what they do; yet “known” by so few for whom they are. In the Costa Ballena, Shawnell Parker was one of those people. Known by all for her work at DAWG, Shawnell was a community leader. Sadly our community lost this amazing woman and iconic warrior for abandoned or injured animals. Shawnell was an incredible woman with an even more incredible life story. San Francisco born, she travelled and lived in places like Hawaii, Kenya, Lebanon, Munich, Guam, Vienna, Rome, Athens, Australia, Rio, to name a few. As an IBM management consultant, Shawnell felt fortunate to experience the culture of so many unique places. After years of hard work, Shawnell and her loving husband Tom retired in Costa Rica. Her new life would be cooking,

sewing, crafts, community service and evenings with Tom and a bold cabernet. Like all those who are called to a higher purpose, Shawnell was eventually again in the trenches, caring for the animals who needed it the most. All of the rescues she had done in the past, were likely practice for what laid ahead of the (for her) last decade in Costa Rica, president of DAWG. Shawnell loved her family and her friends. Shawnell adored her seven grandchildren and was a dedicated and loving wife. She loved her fur babies and the joy they gave. Shawnell’s spirit is as real as we are, and it will continue to be present with every act of kindness we show to each other, and every act of tenderness we demonstrate to the animals she loved so much. Shawnell Parker, you will be missed and never forgotten. Please consider volunteering to honor Shawnell and help fill the huge gap. There are endless possibilities. ■

Durante estos 4 días pueden participar en talleres de permacultura y de medicina natural, clases de yoga y meditación y muchos más. La exhibición de arte e intercambio de culturas y la rica comida orgánica son entre las mejores cosas que se pueden encontrar en el Festival Envision. Este evento es 100% libre de plástico de un solo uso. Cada visitante debe traer su propio plato y utensilios para comer en los stands de comidas y bebidas (se ofrecen facilidades para aquellos no lo traen). Por ser un evento libre de plástico de un solo uso, no se vende ningún producto que este embotellado en plástico y todos los materiales alternos son compostables. Se cuenta con un excelente plan de manejo de desechos que permite reciclar el 90% de los residuos y separar los desechos orgánicos para compost. Un equipo mantiene el orden y educa a los visitantes con respecto a la separación de los desechos sólidos. En los últimos años el Festival Envision ha venido trabajando en el desarrollo sostenible y la limpieza anual de playas antes del evento. Para el 2019 estamos trabajando en la iniciativa Limpiando Osa, iniciativa que nace de jóvenes de Ciudad Cortés y Palmar Norte. La meta es realizar una limpieza masiva de playas con voluntarios y con la ayuda del departamento de Gestión Ambiental de la Municipalidad de Osa y la Campaña Tammy Recicla para lo cual la empresa Ecosonrise estará donando bolsas biodegradables. Para los organizadores del Festival Envision es muy importante la concientización de proteger los recursos naturales y mantener Osa siempre verde. A todos los voluntarios mayores de edad que colaboren con la limpieza de playas, se les estará dando una entrada de admisión general para los 4 días del festival (ver reglamento en el sitio oficial del evento). very February Playa Hermosa in Uvita, is transformed into a small village where more than 7000 people from all over the world coexist. During these 4 days they can participate in permaculture and natural medicine workshops, yoga and meditation classes and others. The exhibition of art and exchange of cultures and the delicious organic food are some of the best things found in the Envision Festival. This event is 100% free of plastic for single use, to the stands of food and drinks. Each visitor must bring his own plate and utensils to eat (they offer facilities for those who did not bring them.) Since it is a single-use plastic-free event, no product bottled in plastic is sold and all the alternative materials are compostable. There is an excellent waste management plan that allows 90% of the waste to be recycled and separate the organic waste, used for compost. A team is in charge of maintaining order and educating visitors regarding the separation of solid waste. In recent years the Envision Festival has been working with sustainable development and the annual cleaning of beaches before the event. For 2019 we are working and supporting the initiative Cleaning the Canton of Osa, originated by young people of Ciudad Cortés and Palmar Norte. The goal is to carry out a massive beach clean-up with volunteers and with the help of the Department of Environmental Management of the Municipality of Osa and the Tammy Recycles Campaign for which the Ecosonrise company will be donating biodegradable bags. For the organizers of the Envision Festival is very important to raise awareness of protecting natural resources and maintaining Osa always green. All volunteers of age who work with beach cleaning will be giving an entry of general admission for the 4 days of the festival (see regulations on the official site of the event). Fue esa motivación lo que llevó a Tamipa Osa, un dúo de mujeres costarricenses, a concretar un plan para dar a Bahía Ballena un punto de encuentro para la exposición de víveres, de arte y gastronomía local y donde el turista pudiese estar frente a frente con la persona que está detrás del producto de su interés. A veces la barrera del idioma dificulta la comunicación; sin embargo existe ese algo más que es la energía positiva, esa sonrisa, ese intento por aprender nuevos idiomas y culturas; simplemente se comunican las personas más allá de credos y nacionalidades. Tras el telón de esta actividad, hay también personas y empresas que con su apoyo fortalecen el proceso. Los miércoles cuando usted puede escuchar la música de los talentosos artistas de la zona, probar la deliciosa y variada comida; observar la creación de una pintura o la creación de alguna joyería artesanal, está apreciando horas de esfuerzo, expresiones del ser, amor y mucha valentía: detalles que enriquecen su elaboración. n December 2018, the market “El MERCADO“ celebrated its first anniversary in the presence of many buyers, visitors and artists like Phil Swain, Gabi Camino and Ellie Dufresne who cheered the party on with their music. Costa Rica is a country where opportunities for entrepreneurship and the freedom to create new projects for travel, study, life plans and / or businesses are abound. The atmosphere you breathe here oxygenates the ideas and thus the magic begins, contributing important initiatives for a united and prosperous community. Many people in one place and with common goals can develop activities of their own as well as a collective benefit. It was this motivation that led Tamipa Osa, a Costa Rican women’s duo, to come up with a plan to give Bahia Ballena a meeting point for local food, art and gastronomy exhibition where tourists could be face to face with the person who is behind the product of their interest. Sometimes the language barrier makes communication difficult; however, there is a lot of positive energy, smiles, and endeavors to learn new languages and cultures; simply by communicating with people beyond their creeds and nationalities. Behind the curtain of this activity, there are also people and companies that strengthen the process with their support. On Wednesdays you can listen to the music of the talented artists, try the delicious and varied food; observe the creation of a painting or the creation of some artisan jewelry, in appreciation of hours of effort, expressions of being, love and a lot of courage: details that enrich its elaboration. It is important to emphasize a great thank you to all the exhibitors for their dedication and effort to participate every Wednesday bringing variety, art and freshness, as well as all the musicians who have accompanied us during this year, entertaining the market “El MERCADO“ and sharing their wonderful talent. ■

t’s not easy starting a business; no one knows that better than sisters Pam and Kim Andreasen from California. As the founders of The Flutterby House in Bahia, the popular eco-friendly beach hostel, bar and restaurant that just celebrated its 10-year anniversary, these women understand the true meaning of hard work and dedication. They have faced more than their fair share of challenges and obstacles over the years, as they transformed a one-acre mango grove near the beach in the Marino Ballena National Park, into the bustling social hub that it is today. The property, which consists of a creative gathering of treehouses, cabinas, dormitories, recreational areas and communal hangout spaces, was built from the ground up with the help from friends, volunteers, and their own blood, sweat and tears. The result is truly magical. When Pam first purchased the land in 2008, the town of Uvita would be unrecognizable to most who come to live or visit here now. Her vision and mission for the Flutterby House were (and

still is), to provide a safe, clean, comfortable and fun “home away from home” for travelers and vacationers, that fosters an environment which inspires creativity, self-discovery and learning, while living sustainably, responsibly and respectfully on the planet. En nuestros inicios estuvimos ubicados a un costado del BCR, pero la recesión económica nos obligó a regresar a nuestro lugar de origen. De igual manera estuvimos visitando la zona frecuentemente. Bonsái de la jungla

uando piensa en “bonsái”, probablemente imagine un pequeño pino o conífera, con un tronco retorcido y ramas que parecen barridas por el viento. O quizás imagine un arce japonés con hojas rojas, majestuosamente renderizado en miniatura. Pero la verdad es que casi cualquier arbusto o árbol con un tallo leñoso se puede usar en el arte del bonsái. ¡Lo que significa que se puede crear bonsáis con muchas de las plantas nativas y ornamentales que tenemos disponibles aquí en Costa Rica! Lo que ahora conocemos como bonsái comenzó en China, pero rápidamente se convirtió en una actividad popular en Japón. Los japoneses refinaron y perfeccionaron la forma de arte, y la mayoría de las convenciones y reglas reconocidas en todo el mundo provienen de esta fuente, incluido el término bonsái, que se traduce literalmente como «plantado en un contenedor». Los que practican el bonsái se sienten atraídos por las hermosas formas que se crean y se enamoran de él porque enseña paciencia y concentración, y cualquier persona con una naturaleza cuidadosa sobresale en este arte. El bonsái más antiguo es un árbol ficus de China, actualmente ubicado en un museo en Crespi, Italia, y tiene más de 1.000 años de antigüedad. Es fácil dejarse intimidar por esta historia, pero incluso los jardineros principiantes pueden

crear sus propios bonsáis, y recientemente organizamos un taller de Bonsái para principiantes en Ojochal como un evento para recaudar fondos para el programa Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards. El grupo aprendió las 5 formas básicas (vertical formal, vertical informal, inclinada, semi-cascada y cascada), así como el proceso de cortar las raíces para mantener la planta pequeña, elegir la maceta correcta y recortar las ramas para darles forma. La mayor parte de la información sobre el cuidado a largo plazo que se encuentra en Internet es para climas más fríos, por lo que también analizamos las técnicas de riego, la exposición al sol/ sombra más apropiada para los trópicos. El próximo taller que beneficiará a los Guardavidas Costa Ballena se está planeando para febrero. ■

Jungle Bonsai

hen you think of Bonsai, you probably imagine a small pine or conifer, with a gorgeously twisted and gnarled trunk, and windswept branches or maybe a Japanese maple with red leaves, majestically rendered in miniature. The truth is that just about any shrub or tree with a woody stem can be used in the art of bonsai. Which means that bonsai is possible with many of the native, ornamental plants that we have available to us here in Costa Rica! What we now know as bonsai started in China, but quickly became a popular activity in Japan. The Japanese refined and perfected the art form. Most of the conventions and rules recognized worldwide come from this source, including the term bonsai which translates literally to ‘planted in a container.’ Those who practice bonsai are drawn to it for the beautiful forms that are created but fall in love with it because it teaches patience and focus. Anyone with a nurturing nature excels in this art. The oldest bonsai is a Chinese fichus tree, currently housed at

a museum in Crespi, Italy and is over 1,000 years old. There are many legacy bonsai that have been passed down from generation to generation, surviving for hundreds of years. It’s easy to get intimidated by this history, but even beginner gardeners can create their own bonsai. We recently hosted a Bonsai for Beginners workshop in Ojochal as a fundraising event for the Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards program. The group learned the 5 basic forms - formal upright, informal upright, slanted, semi-cascade and cascade as well as the process of trimming the roots to keep the plant small, choosing the correct pot, and trimming branches for shape. Most of the long term care information found on the internet is for colder climates, so we also discussed watering techniques, repotting and sun/shade exposure more appropriate to the tropics. The next workshop benefitting the Guardavidas Costa Ballena is being planned for February. ■

drá más del doble del tamaño de la estructura existente, se agregará espacio de oficinas para las empresas de alquiler de automóviles, se instalarán sistemas de extinción de incendios de emergencia y sistemas de agua para la seguridad de la terminal. Estaciones de carga integradas en los asientos personalizados. Las grandes ventanas de vidrio templado permitirán una gran cantidad de luz natural en el edificio y al mismo tiempo, protegen a los viajeros de las lluvias estacionales (las terminales anteriores del aeropuerto eran al aire libre). La pista renovada será más amplia y renovado, y se instalarán nuevas luces para proporcionar una pista de aterrizaje de emergencia para la mayoría de los tipos de aeronaves que vuelan a Costa Rica y también para ofrecer opciones de aterrizaje nocturno para los aviones chárter. Con esta segunda etapa que culminará pronto, espero que más viajeros y residentes opten por volar a Palmar Sur. Esta área ha recorrido un largo camino en los últimos 15 años; este es solo un ejemplo más. ■

principios del 2019, los que viajan a las regiones del Pacífico Sur y Costa Ballena de Costa Rica tendrán la opción de volar a la nueva y ampliada terminal del aeropuerto regional de Palmar Sur (código de aeropuerto es PMZ). Es el aeropuerto más cercano y más convenientemente ubicado de la región. Sansa Airlines ofrece ahí vuelos diarios por la mañana hacia y desde San José. Esta es la segunda y última etapa del plan de aeropuerto que se aprobó hace aproximadamente 10 años. El trabajo de expansión comenzó el 1 de agosto y estoy cautelosamente optimista de que se puede cumplir el objetivo de construcción para inicio del año. Sin embargo, no creo que el aeropuerto esté listo para operar hasta febrero dado el tiempo que se necesitará para instalar nuevos sistemas de comunicación, técnicas eléctricas (y respaldos de emergencia), completando el acabado, pérdida de tiempo debido a las vacaciones e inspecciones finales del gobierno. Palmar Sur Airport

his is the second and final stage of the airport plan which was approved approximately 10 years ago. Beginning in early 2019, travelers to the Southern Pacific and Costa Ballena regions of Costa Rica will have the option of flying into the new and expanded Palmar Sur regional airport terminal. Palmar Sur (airport code PMZ) is the region’s closest and most conveniently located airport, offering daily morning flights to-and-from San Jose via Sansa Airlines. Expansion work began on August 1st and I am cautiously optimistic that the January 2019 construction goal can be met. However, I don’t think that the airport will be ready to operate until February, given the amount of time that will be needed to install new communication systems, electrical techniques (and emergency back-ups), completing the finishing work, lost time due to the holidays, and final government inspections. There are many changes e.g.: the new terminal will be over

twice the size of the existing structure, office space for rental car companies is being added, emergency fire suppression and water systems are being installed for terminal safety. Embedded charging stations in the customized seating. Large tempered glass windows will allow plenty of natural lighting into the building while at the same time protecting travelers from the seasonal rains (the previous airport terminals were open-air). The runway is being widened and resurfaced, and new runway lights will be installed providing an emergency landing strip for most types of aircraft that fly into Costa Rica and also providing night landing options for charter planes. With this second stage just a matter of weeks away, I expect more travelers and residents to choose to fly into Palmar Sur. This area has come a long way over the past 15 years - this is just one more example. ■

Durante nuestra pasantía en Ballena Tales, pudimos participar en varias excursiones y actividades en Osa: nuestros momentos más destacados fueron una reunión de la Cámara de Turismo (CATUOSA) en el Hotel Cristal Ballena; nuestras primeras entrevistas en la heladería "Gelato", sesiones de fotos en el restaurante "Gusto" y "Pancito Café", así como una encuesta de mercadeo en Dominical. Descubrimos muchos lugares únicos, mejoramos nuestro español, experimentamos un estilo de vida diferente y conocimos a personas inspiradoras, ¡y también tuvimos que trabajar! Estamos muy agradecidos por la experiencia práctica en Ballena Tales, por los conocimientos sobre la cultura y la vida en Costa Rica. ¡Pura vida! ■

omos Selina y Maggie, también conocidas como "Gemelas", dos estudiantes alemanas de ciencias de la comunicación. En nuestro país, el pequeño país de Costa Rica en América Central es considerado como un verdadero oasis de felicidad. En casa soñamos con playas impresionantes, una fauna diversa, un verano interminable con calor tropical y un estilo de vida relajado. Nuestro tiempo en Costa Rica fue tan variado como nuestras expectativas: comenzamos nuestro día con yoga, continuamos con un paseo por la selva tropical a Playa Hermosa y luego nos deleitamos con las frutas exóticas en el mercado semanal de agricultores de Uvita. En nuestros fines de semana, caminamos hacia la cola de la ballena, surfeamos a lo largo de la costa y visitamos varios parques nacionales y la cascada, que se encuentran en un cañón de aproximadamente ochenta metros de ancho. Además, pasamos varios fines de semana en San José buceando en la vida nocturna de Costa Rica. Como pasantes en Ballena Tales Magazine, nuestras tareas incluían entrevistas, redacción de artículos, traducciones al alemán, visitas a clientes, creación de encuestas, desarrollo de estrategias de marketing y mejoras del sitio web. Vivíamos en una pequeña casa en Uvita rodeada de naturaleza, despertándonos con el canto de los pájaros o a veces por el sonido de los monos aulladores. La lluvia intensa, los cortes de electricidad, las tuberías de agua rotas o los insectos en nuestra

On our weekends, we walked out to the whale’s tail, surfed along the coast and visited several national parks and the waterfalls, which are located in a canyon approximately eighty meters wide. In addition, we spent several weekends in San José diving into the Costa Rican nightlife. As interns at Ballena Tales Magazine, our tasks included interviews, writing articles, translations into German, customer visits, creating surveys, developing marketing strategies and improving their website. We lived in a small house in Uvita surrounded by nature, awakening by the chirping of birds or sometimes by howler monkeys. Even heavy rain, power cuts, broken water pipes or bugs in our house could not spoil our mood. During our internship at Ballena Tales we were able to take part in several tours and activities in Osa: Our highlights were a meeting of the Tourism Chamber (CATUOSA) at the Cristal Ballena Hotel, conducted our first interview at the ice cream parlor "Gelato", photo shootings at the restaurant "Gusto" and “Pancito Café“, as well as a marketing survey in Dominical. We discovered many unique places, improved our Spanish, experienced a different lifestyle, met inspiring people, and also had to work! We are very grateful for the practical experience at Ballena Tales, for the insights into culture and life in Costa Rica. Pura Vida! ■

In our country, the small country of Costa Rica in Central America is regarded as a true oasis of happiness. At home we dreamed of breathtaking beaches, diverse wildlife, an endless summer with tropical heat and a relaxed lifestyle. Our time in Costa Rica was as varied as our expectations: we started our day with yoga, continued with a ride through the rainforest to Playa Hermosa and afterwards feasted on exotic fruits at Uvita’s weekly farmers market.

Alice en el país de las palmeras

uestra señorita Marple, versión francesa, recientemente reubicada en Costa Rica, descubre la felicidad y las peculiaridades de la selva en este hermoso país. La naturaleza en Centroamérica ofrece sorpresas que dan lugar a algunos divertidos malentendidos. A Alice le encanta levantarse temprano, se siente muy bien. A partir de las 5:30 am, el sol ilumina la casa con sus rayos dorados. Es imposible dormir hasta tarde : los tucanes silban, los papagayos se regocijan y los monos congo gruñen tan fuertemente como si quisieran abrir un hueco en las nubes. Esta mañana, nuestra detective amateur decide aprovechar el frescor para adentrarse en la piscina. Ella no puede encontrar sus lentes, no importa! Como una sirenita, ella deja que su cuerpo flote con deleite. Después de unas brazadas, cuando sale a secarse, nota miles de pequeños granos grises en sus muslos y vientre. Ella lanza un grito agudo: ¡Ahhhhh! Tengo una alergia al agua de la piscina!

Pero después de la ducha, los granos desaparecen. Ella se pone sus lentes y no ve nada en su piel. Por otro lado, observa en el suelo miles de pequeños gránulos grises que fluyen hacia el desagüe. ¡Hay algo en la piscina, tengo que investigar! Por la noche, ella se sienta en una mecedora y observa el área de la piscina en la oscuridad. De repente, docenas de sapitas se acercan como si fuesen llegando a un baile. Algunas tienen vestidos bonitos de colores dignos de la velada encantadora que se avecina. De hecho, un macho grande, balanceándose sobre sus patas delanteras, se para con orgullo. Su barriga hinchada demuestra que cenó bien y honra a todas estas damas con ardor al cubrir los miles de huevos que le ofrecen. Se acerca a Alice, le lanza un insolente "Croaaaaaa". NO, Alice no le dará un beso, ¡porque realmente no es nada encantador! Caso resuelto!!! ■

Alice in the Land of Palms

ur French Miss Marple, recently relocated in Costa Rica, discovers the happiness and peculiarities of the jungle in this beautiful country. Nature in Central America offers surprises that give rise to some funny misunderstandings. Alice loves to get up early, she feels satisfied. Beginning at 5:30 am, the sun illuminates the house with its golden rays. It is impossible to sleep late ; the toucans whistle, the Papagayos rejoice, and the congo monkeys grunt louldly as if to part the clouds. This morning, our amateur detective decides to take advantage of the coolness to delve into the pool. She can not find her glasses, too bad! Like the little mermaid, she lets her body float with delight. After a few strokes, when she goes out to dry, she notices thousands of little gray pimples on her thighs and belly. She utters a shrill cry: Ahhhhh !!! I have an allergy to the pool water!

But after the shower, the pimples disappear. She puts on her glasses and sees nothing on her skin. On the ground, on the other hand, she sees thousands of small gray granules flowing into the drain. There is something in the pool, I have to investigate! In the evening, she sits in a rocking chair, and observes the pool area without lights. Suddenly, dozens of female toads arrive as if they were arriving at a ball. Some have pretty colored dresses worthy of the charming evening that lays ahead. Indeed, a big male proudly stands, balancing on his front legs. His bouncy belly proves that he dined well and comes to honor all these ladies with ardor by covering the thousands of eggs they offer him. He approaches Alice and, insolent, throws a very enterprising "Croaaaaaa. " No, Alice will not give him a kiss, because he's not really charming! Inquiry ended !!! ■

Esparragos verdes

ctualmente tenemos excelentes opciones para preparar platos frescos y llenos de vida. Con ganas de aprovechar al máximo los vegetales de temporada, encontramos el esparrago verde fresquecito en la Feria de Uvita. Vale la pena integrar los espárragos verdes en nuestro menú, les explicamos porqué. Compuestos por un 90% de agua y con tan sólo 25 Kcal por cada 100g, los espárragos son considerados como un magnífico aliado para las dietas. Su alto contenido en fibras ayuda además al equilibrio intestinal mientras que sus componentes diuréticos facilitan el funcionamiento renal. Por si no fuera poco, los espárragos están llenos de minerales (magnesio, calcio) y vitaminas (B, E y C), lo que los hace un alimento muy completo. Como puede leer, este pequeño vegetal está lleno de sorpresas que no debemos de olvidar a la hora de preparar la lista de compras cuando vamos al mercado.

Receta de espárragos verdes gratinados

¿Y cómo se elaboran? Elaboramos la salsa bechamel en primer lugar. Para ello, derretimos la mantequilla en una cacerola pequeña y cuando esté bien caliente agregamos la harina y revolvemos constantemente hasta obtener una mezcla sin grumos. Añadimos lentamente la leche caliente sin dejar de revolver. Condimentamos con sal y pimienta al gusto y, cuando la salsa esté espesa, la retiramos del fuego. Salteamos ligeramente los espárragos verdes frescos en una sartén con una cucharada de aceite de oliva y ajo finamente picado, hasta que se dore la superficie de los espárragos. Deben quedar medio cocinados, con el interior al dente. Colocamos ordenadamente los espárragos salteados en una bandeja o una fuente refractaría. Vertemos la salsa bechamel encima y espolvoreamos con queso parmesano. Introducimos la bandeja en el horno, previamente calentado a 250 °C. Una vez dorada la superficie, sacamos los espárragos del horno y servimos calientes. ■

urrently, we have excellent options to prepare fresh dishes, full of life. With the desire to make the most of seasonal vegetables, we found fresh green asparagus at the Uvita Fair. It is worth integrating the green asparagus in our menu, and this is why. Compounded by 90% water and with only 25 Kcal per 100g, asparagus are considered a great ally for diets. Its high fiber content also helps intestinal balance, while its diuretic components facilitate kidney function. As if that were not enough, asparagus is packed with minerals (magnesium, calcium) and vitamins (B, E and C), which makes them a very complete food. As you can read, this little vegetable is full of surprises that we should not forget when preparing the shopping list for the market.

And how are they made? Make the béchamel sauce first. To do this, melt butter in a small saucepan. When it is hot add flour and stir constantly to obtain a mixture without lumps. Add hot milk slowly while stirring. Season with salt and pepper to taste. When the sauce is thick, remove it from the heat. Lightly sauté fresh green asparagus in a pan with a tablespoon of olive oil and finely chopped garlic, until the surface of the asparagus is browned. It should be half cooked, with the inside al dente. Place the sautéed asparagus in an orderly tray or a refractory dish. Pour the béchamel sauce on top and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place the tray in the oven, previously heated to 250 ° C. Once the surface is browned, remove the asparagus from the oven and serve hot. ■

omo padres, maestros, mentores o familias y miembros de la comunidad, a menudo queremos que nuestros hijos / estudiantes desarrollen una conciencia de sí mismos y de quienes los rodean. ¿Cómo es que nuestros hijos tienen un sentido de sus mundos, así como un sentido de su lugar en el medio ambiente y la comunidad que los rodea?” Alys Robinson pensó en esos términos los que la llevaron a crear Life Project Education. Cuando se mudó a Costa Rica, Alys comenzó a ofrecer talleres privados de alfabetización basados en proyectos para grupos pequeños. Realmente no tenía intención de comenzar una escuela o un centro de aprendizaje, ni siquiera planeaba quedarse en el país por mucho tiempo, pero los padres le pidieron que creara y se involucrara más. Entonces ella comenzó a entender el significado de ser "llamada al servicio". Hace cuatro años creó conjuntamente con una pequeña comunidad de padres, niños y mentores el Life Project en Manuel Antonio. Alys enfatiza la importancia de señalar que Life Project no es una escuela, sino un "centro comunitario de aprendizaje holístico y transformador". El cual tiene un enfoque en los sistemas de vida sostenible, la nutrición y el bienestar, la construcción de comunidades, la expresión creativa, la ciencia de la conservación, el espíritu empresarial, la comunicación y la atención plena. Awakening the True Mission

“

s parents, teachers, mentors, or families and community members, we often want our children/students to develop an awareness of themselves and those around them. How do our children have a sense of their worlds as well as a sense of their place in the environment and the community that surrounds them”? Alys Robinson thought in those terms which led her to create Life Project Education. Alys began offering private, small group, project-based literacy workshops when she relocated to Costa Rica. However, she had no intention of starting an actual school or a learning center. In fact, she did not plan to stay in Costa Rica long term. However, the parents asked her to offer more, create and to become more involved. Then she began to understand what it meant to be "called to service." Alongside a small community of parents, children, and mentors, she cocreated Life Project in Manual Antonio four years ago. Alys shares, "I am forever grateful for the children and families of Manuel Antonio for seeing that gift in me and calling me forward, awakening my deepest and true mission." Recently, Alys relocted to Ojochal where the Life Project Education (LPE) will now open in Mid-January of 2019. She relocated to Costa Ballena because this region resonated with her in a way that no other geographical area or community around the world ever had. To serve the community and environment, LPE has partnered with The Sloth Institute, Tortugas de Matapalo, Kids Saving the Rainforest, and Asomacao. Alys emphasizes the importance of noting that Life Project is not a school but rather a "transformative and holistic learning community center with a focus on sustainable living systems, nutrition and well-being, community building, creative expression, conservation science, eco-entrepreneurship, communication, and mindfulness. Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas

l Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas (PNPB) es una de las áreas protegidas de más reciente creación y una de las menos visitadas en Costa Rica. Protege tanto parte continental (14,147 ha) como marítima (1,200 ha). Fue creado en 1991 (Decreto Ejecutivo No. 23153-MIRENEM) para proteger el último remanente de bosque tropical lluvioso de Golfito y la cuenca del río Esquinas. Más de 65 millones de años atrás, el levantamiento de montes submarinos dio origen a lo que es hoy Piedras Blancas. A esta razón se debe su particular topografía: piedemontes muy empinados que comienzan donde llega la pleamar. Rodeado de arrecifes y comunidades coralinas, puntas rocosas y con un bosque de manglar como límite, la parte marina costera del parque es tan fascinante como la parte terrestre. El PNPB es uno de los parques nacionales que aún conserva poblaciones viables de especies amenazadas: grandes felinos como el Jaguar (Panthera onca) y el Puma (Puma concolor) y

aves como la Lapa roja (Ara macao) y la Tangara hormiguera carinegra (Habia atrimaxillaris). También se pueden encontrar árboles como Nazareno (Peltogyne purpurea), Vaco (Brosimum utile) y Pilón (Hyeronima alchorneoides) cuyas poblaciones han disminuido debido a la sobreexplotación de los recursos maderables ocurrida hace más de 60 años. El acceso al PNPB puede hacerse tanto por mar como por tierra, desde la comunidad de La Gamba para disfrutar de los senderos en el bosque, o bien por Golfito, si el objetivo es apreciar el escenario marino. El plan turístico para ésta área protegida contempla la creación de un puesto de control marino que facilite la entrada al área costera, la zonificación de los puntos de interés turístico y el beneficio a la comunidad local. Dicho plan está en desarrollo a cargo de sus actores principales: hoteleros como el Playa Cativo Lodge y emprendedores locales que saben que la biodiversidad se protege de la mano del aprovechamiento sostenible de los recursos. ■

Piedras Blancas National Park

he Piedras Blancas National Park (PNPB) is one of the most recently created protected areas and one of the least visited in Costa Rica. It protects both continental (14,147 ha) and maritime (1,200 ha) area. It was created in 1991 (Executive Decree No. 23153-MIRENEM) to protect the last remnant of tropical rain forest in Golfito and the Esquinas River basin. More than 65 million years ago, the uplift of seamounts gave rise to what is today Piedras Blancas. It has a particular topography: very steep piedmonts that begin where the high tide arrives. Surrounded by coral reefs and communities, rocky points and with a mangrove forest as a limit, the coastal marine part of the park is as fascinating as the land part. The PNPB is one of the national parks that still conserves viable populations of threatened species: big cats such as the Jaguar (Panthera onca) and Puma (Puma concolor) and birds

such as the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) and the Tanager antigue carinegra (Habia) atrimaxillaris). You can also find trees such as Nazareno (Peltogyne purpurea), Vaco (Brosimum utile) and Pilón (Hyeronima alchorneoides) whose populations have declined due to overexploitation of timber resources occurred more than 60 years ago. You can access the PNPB by land from the community of La Gamba to enjoy the trails in the forest, or by sea from Golfito, if the objective is to appreciate the marine scenery. A tourist plan for this protected area contemplates the creation of a marine control post that facilitates the entrance to the coastal area, the zoning of the points of tourist interest and the benefit to the local community. This plan is under development by its main actors: hoteliers such as Playa Cativo Lodge and local entrepreneurs who know that biodiversity is protected by the sustainable use of resources. ■
