Between East & West: The British Chinese An artistic investigation by Mike Tsang into what it means to be a British Born Chinese - featuring 15 photographic portraits, archival imagery and written interviews.

in Pimlico have been busy this summer producing their first batch of honey of the season.

Urban beekeeper Dr. Luke Dixon set up the hives in conjunction with CityWest Homes and it has created a real buzz among the community.

Award-winning photographer Mike Tsang opens a groundbreaking photographic exhibition showcasing the fascinating stories of the British Born Chinese and their families’ lives in Britain.

Tsang presents Between East and West as an exhibition premiere exploring the heritage of this new community in the UK. Through the combination of Eastern and Western values, the subjects form part of a unique third culture that shapes Chinese influence in 21st century Britain.

The estate has won the ‘Best Garden for Wildlife’ section of the ‘Westminster in Bloom’ competition and has achieved a Green Flag award for excellent management and maintenance for five years running. CityWest Homes are still the first social housing provider to have won this award.

With an abundance of flowers in the area, the honey making machines are able to get enough food and shelter to sustain their lives. In turn this has seen over 20lbs of the sticky substance produced for the estate and Dr. Dixon is hoping to have even more bees swarming to the area in the future.

Most British people’s exposure to Chinese culture is through the Chinatowns or the ubiquitous takeaways of UK cities. But where are the Chinese in culture, sport or politics? Between East & West celebrates the role of British Born Chinese in modern society and challenges the distorted view of Chinese culture as the mystical Orient.

Tsang’s family migrated from China to Mauritius to the UK, provoking him to ask which parts of him are Chinese and which parts British. His background allows him to connect with others facing a similar dilemma and to understand the tensions of embracing different cultures.

Plans are already in place to install another three hives which will provide even more honey in the area. All of the honey produced will then be sent off to a qualified honey producing expert to be jarred and given out to residents as awards for their gardening.

Clare Maslin, Service Improvement and Corporate Communications Manager, congratulated the teams’ efforts.

“To see the residents and our expert team of gardeners working together on projects like this is something that we actively encourage. Lillington and Longmoore is renowned for its flowers and provides the perfect habitat for the bees to produce honey. This project also highlights how residents can produce their own harvest, even when they live in the heart of the city.”

Between East and West is an opportunity to hear the stories of the British Born Chinese as a document of the diversity of 21st century Britain.
