station, including station step-free access, will be delivered at a fraction of the cost to the fare payer.

A redevelopment of Knightsbridge tube station is underway, opening up a series of disused tunnels that the public haven’t seen since the 1930s.

Knightsbridge station has two entrances, at either end of the platforms — heading towards Harrods, or the other way, towards Harvey Nicks and Sloane Street. It is the corner exit at the Harvey Nicks end that is set to be demolished, and a new entrance built further along the street, at 15 Brompton Road.

A developer owns the entire block of shops and offices above one of the tube station’s two existing entrances, and as part of the development, a new step-free access is to be added, as well a new centrally positioned main entrance.

In addition, the pavement on Brompton Road and Sloane Street will be widened, making more space for pedestrians. TfL has confirmed that the new station entrance will open to customers in 2019. Another new entrance will open in 2020 around the other side of the building, providing two 17person lifts, making the station step-free from street to train. The new Hooper’s Court entrance will be located just beyond the original 1906 station entrance.

This step-free route will re-open some areas of the station that were closed in the early 1930s when escalators were installed.

You can see the abandoned tunnels and lift shafts in the drawing below, and just about as the thin pink loop under the building in the 3D-renders.

Knightsbridge Tube station is owned by TfL, while the property above the station is owned by the Knightsbridge Estate. The Estate got the green light in 2016 to redevelop it, restoring the original architectural features of the building’s façade while modernising the office, retail and residential space inside.

TfL secured a commercial deal with the Estate’s development manager Chelsfield so that a number of improvements to the Tube

Cooling and draught improvements will also be made, which will provide immediate benefits to the station environment and reduce the amount of closures required when the Piccadilly line upgrade is delivered.

Knightsbridge Tube station sees over 19 million customer journeys each year, and the original station was designed by Leslie Green in 1906.

STATUE OF WINSTON CHURCHILL, PARLIAMENT SQUARE.

RELIEF SCULPTURE OF THE CARABINIERS MEMORIAL

is 12 feet high and is made of bronze. It was sculpted by Ivor Roberts-Jones and is located on the main green of Parliament Square, opposite the Palace of Westminster. It shows Winston Churchill standing with his hand resting on his walking stick and wearing a military greatcoat. The plinth is 8 feet high with "Churchill " inscribed on it in large capital letters. A proposal to insert pins standing out of the statue's head was turned down in the 1970s – the pins were intended to stop wild birds from sitting on its head.

is situated on the corner with Chelsea Bridge Road, is the Carabiniers Memorial, to the cavalry who fell in the Boer War, dating from 1905.

It incorporates two panels listing the fallen, and a large central panel by the sculptor Adrian Jones. The low relief scene is rather poignant: in the foreground is a mounted Carabinier, with several horses, facing away from us, towards two dismounted troops – their horses presumably being those held by the foreground figure – are cautiously ascending a rocky hill, bayoneted rifles at the ready; dimly glimpsed near the summit is another figure, taking cover as he peers over towards the unseen enemy. The sculptor Adrian Jones specialised in horsy subjects, most notably the Quadriga atop Constitution Arch at Hyde Park Corner.

The Churchill Statue Committee had concerns during the statue's development process that it looked "a little too much " like the Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini.

Roberts-Jones agreed to modify the sculpture to reduce the dome of the head in order to lower the forehead.

The statue that was installed was first suggested by John Tilney, MP for Liverpool Wavertree, in a parliamentary question in 1968. Sponsors of the Winston Churchill Statue Appeal raised £32,000 from 4,500 individuals.

Adrian Jones is an interesting sculptor, specialising in equestrian figures, with an unconventional career. He was born in Ludlow, studied at the Royal Veterinary College, qualifying in 1866 as a vetinary surgeon, and enrolling in the Army as a vetinary officer in the Royal Horse Artillery the following year. It was only in 1890, having achieved the rank of captain, that he retired, and in 1891 set himself up in Chelsea as an artist. He had little formal art training, working for a time under C. B. Birch, but prospered with commissions for horse portraits.

The statue was unveiled on 1st November 1973 by Clementine, Baroness Spencer-Churchill, Winston Churchill's widow. Queen Elizabeth II had declined to unveil the statue herself, indicating that she thought it right that Lady Spencer-Churchill should do so, although the Queen did attend the ceremony, and gave a speech in which she mentioned that Churchill had turned down a dukedom because he wanted to spend his remaining years in the House of Commons. Union Flags covered the statue, which were removed as a cord was pulled. Others present at the unveiling included The Queen Mother, members of the Churchill family across four generations, Edward Heath (then Prime Minister), and four former Prime Ministers. The Band of the Royal Marines played several of Churchill's favourite pieces of music.

His most important - indeed, spectacular - work is the 40-ton Peace in her Quadriga (i.e. four-horsed chariot), dating from 1912 and emplaced on top of the Arch at Hyde Park Corner. An excellent St George slaying an equally excellent crocodile-like dragon (Cavalry Monument) is also in Hyde Park. Also in London, he has the George, Duke of Cambridge in Whitehall, & the (non-equestrian) Marines Memorial on The Mall. On Chelsea Embankment opposite the bridge is a horsy plaque for a Boer War Memorial, and a plaster version of this is in the National Army Museum near Sloane Square.

The statue has an electric current passing through it to deter pigeons. In 2008, the statue was grade II listed.

QUEEN ANNE'S MANSIONS

is an office block on Petty France overlooking St. James's Park, which was designed by Fitzroy Robinson & Partners, with Sir Basil Spence and completed in 1976. It was well known as the main location for the UK Home Office between 1978 and 2004 when it was known as 50 Queen Anne's Gate and now houses the Ministry of Justice and Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service. The building is 184 ft high, with 14 floors providing 51,000 550,000 sq ft of office space.

The site was previously occupied by the 14-storey mansion block

was a block of flats in Petty France. In 1873, Henry Alers Hankey acquired a site between St. James's Park and St. James Park Station. Acting as his own architect, and employing his own labour, he erected the first stage of the block. At 12 stories, later increased to 14, it was the loftiest residential building in Britain.

The flats were further extended in 1874 and 1877 to the south and west. There were objections to the height of the flats, not least from Queen Victoria who could no longer view the Houses of Parliament from Buckingham Palace. However existing legislation did not prohibit building over 100 feet. The London Building Act of 1894, limited height to 80-feet.

It may have been legal complications that led him to employ an architect, E. R. Robson. Robson continued the mansions around the central courtyard, leaving only Queen Anne's Lodge as the sole survivor of the residential properties that had formerly stood on the site. Hankey ran into financial difficulties and the property passed into the hands of the Official Receiver. The west block became a hotel & the remainder was let as flats & service suites.

During the Second World War, the building was requisitioned as Government offices, and it was decided to construct a shelter. A long room in the west block, originally a theatre, had supporting piers built up from the foundation, and a stout reinforced concrete slab was laid to give head cover. Two direct bomb-hits caused debris to overload the upper floors, causing a vertical gash through the entire building.

Queen Anne's Mansions which were despised by some architectural commentators. However, the new building's architecture was not favourably received, due to its scale and massing with protruding elements at the upper and lower floors, often being described as a Brutalist design: it was sometimes known to those who worked there as "the Lubyanka ". Fodor's guide to London described it as "hulking ".

The building was originally built as a speculative office development but the Home Office moved to it due to lack of space in its previous headquarters in Whitehall.

Queen Anne's Mansions was home to the Medical Department of the Royal Navy (Admiralty) and the Women's Royal Naval Service during the Second World War. In 1947, the Ministry of Works retained the building on a 21-year lease. It was used as an Admiralty headquarters building, housing the Second Sea Lord's or Naval Personnel departments.

In 1973, Queen Anne's Mansions were demolished and later replaced by 50 Queen Anne's Gate.

In spring 2005 the Home Office moved to a new purpose-built building at 2 Marsham Street designed by Terry Farrell. The Queen Anne's Gate building had major refurbishment work carried out on it, whilst being under the ownership of Land Securities. From 2008 it has been the home of the Ministry of Justice and Tribunals Service, with the building renamed 102 Petty France.

Labour will do very well in the May local elections – especially in London. They will deploy their Momentum shock troops to great effect, both on the doorstep and in the increasingly-important cyber campaign. The Tories are likely to get a real mid-tern drubbing, even though they will only be one year in to the Parliamentary term.

Edwin and Adelaide were married in 1875. According to Adelaide, it was intended to be a platonic marriage, but in 1881 she had a stillborn baby by Edwin. In 1885, they met Dyson as the local Wesleyan minister and he became a frequent visitor. Edwin made Dyson executor of his will, in which he left his entire estate to Adelaide, on condition that she did not remarry. Later Edwin redrew the will, four months before he died, removing the bar on Adelaide remarrying.

Predictions are a mug’s game and that applies in spades to political predictions. So anyway, here goes…..

Towards the end of 1885, Adelaide asked Dyson to get some chloroform that had been prescribed for treating Edwin. Dr. Leach prescribed it reluctantly at the insistence of his patient. Under the law he had to sign a book at the chemist's pharmacy as a record of buying medical poisons, but only for large amounts; Dyson bought 4 small bottles of chloroform instead of 1 large bottle, and from several shops, claiming that he needed it to remove grease stains. Only after Edwin's death, did Dyson realize how suspicious his actions were.

As for Brexit, with both sides having discovered a need to compromise over ‘phase one’ negotiations, agreement on a two ..year transition deal will probably be ..reached with only minor ‘alarums and excursions’. EU negotiators have no great affection for Theresa May or David Davis, but they are seriously concerned that ..they might at some stage have ..to deal with Boris .Johnson - or ..even Jeremy Corbyn.

On December 31, 1885, Edwin Bartlett returned from a visit to the dentist and went to sleep alongside Adelaide in their Pimlico flat.

Just before 4am the next morning Adelaide asked their maid to fetch Dr Leach, fearing Edwin was dead, before rousing the landlady.

Edwin's stomach was filled with liquid chloroform. Edwin's alleged suicide might have been believed and his death considered free of foul play, except that his father detested Adelaide and had earlier accused her of having an affair with Edwin's younger brother, became suspicious & persuaded authorities to look into the death.

An inquest returned a verdict of wilful murder by Adelaide Bartlett, with George Dyson being an accessory before the fact. Both were arrested. At the opening of the trial the prosecution asked for the charges against Dyson to be dropped & he was formally acquitted.

Away from the world of politics, I predict that we have reached ‘peak beard’. Anyone with a jaw line will be eager to show it off, leaving facial fuzz to the overweight. The top-knot will become once again the sole preserve of sumo wrestlers and diehard Hoxton hipsters.

Adelaide Bartlett was defended by Sir Edward Clarke, who suggested Bartlett had committed suicide. The prosecution was in the hands of the current Attorney General, Sir Charles Russell.

Adelaide was not able to testify in her own defence and the defence called no witnesses. The main forensic aid to Mrs. Bartlett is that the liquid chloroform reached the stomach without burning the sides of the throat and the larynx. Edwin did not have such burns on his body. The jury on returning to court did not think there is sufficient evidence to show how or by whom the chloroform was administered. The foreman then confirmed that the verdict was not guilty, which was greeted with "rapturous applause ", public opinion having moved in Adelaide's favour during the course of the trial.

The global economy will enter its first period of genuine sustained growth since the credit crunch, with the United States, Asia and Europe (including the UK - ‘despite Brexit’) all growing. Interest rates will continue to edge up, property prices will stall, Bitcoin will crash, and there will be a flight to gold.

And the World Cup? England to go out on penalties in the quarter finals, as usual!

JAMES MILL

In 1808, he became acquainted with Jeremy Bentham, and was for many years his chief companion and ally. He adopted Bentham's principles in their entirety, and determined to devote all his energies to bringing them before the world. Between 1806 and 1818, he wrote for the Anti-Jacobin Review, the British Review and The Eclectic Review; but there is no means of tracing his contributions. In 1808, he began to write for the Edinburgh Review, to which he contributed steadily till 1813, his first known article being "Money and Exchange." He also wrote on Spanish America, China, Francisco de Miranda, the East India Company, and the Liberty of the Press. In the Annual Review for 1808 two articles of his are traced—a "Review of Fox's History," and an article on "Bentham's Law Reforms," probably his first published notice of Bentham. In 1811 he co-operated with William Allen, a Quaker and chemist, in a periodical called the Philanthropist. He contributed largely to every issue – his principal topics being Education, Freedom of the Press, and Prison Discipline (under which he expounded Bentham's Panopticon). He made powerful onslaughts on the Church in connection with the Bell and Lancaster controversy, and took a part in the discussions that led to the foundation of the University of London in 1825. In 1814 he wrote a number of articles, containing an exposition of utilitarianism, for the supplement to the 5th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica.

was born on 6th April 1773 in Northwater Bridge, in the parish of Logie Pert, Angus.

James Milne, later known as James Mill, was the son of a shoemaker and small farmer. His mother, Isabel Fenton, of a family that had suffered from connection with the Stuart rising, resolved that he should receive a first-rate education, and sent him first to the parish school and then to the Montrose Academy, where he remained until the unusual age of seventeen and a half. He then entered the University of Edinburgh, where he distinguished himself as a Greek scholar.

In October 1798, he was ordained as a minister of the Church of Scotland, but met with little success. From 1790 to 1802, in addition to holding various tutorships, he occupied himself with historical and philosophical studies. Finding little prospect of a career in Scotland, in 1802 he went to London, in company with Sir John Stuart of Fettercairn, then member of parliament for Kincardineshire, and devoted himself to literary work. From 1803 to 1806, he was editor of an ambitious periodical called the Literary Journal, which professed to give a summary view of all the leading departments of human knowledge. During this time he also edited the St James's Chronicle, belonging to the same proprietor. In 1804, he wrote a pamphlet on the corn trade, arguing against a bounty on the exportation of grain. In 1805, he published a translation of An Essay on the Spirit and Influence of the Reformation of Luther, a C.F. Villers's work on the Reformation, an attack on the alleged vices of the papal system.

About the end of this year he began his The History of British India, which he took twelve years to complete, instead of three or four, as had been expected.

In 1818, The History of British India was published, and brought about a change in the author's fortunes.

1819 he was appointed an official in the India House,and gradually rose in ranks until he was appointed head of the office.

In that year he also married Harriet Burrow, whose mother, a widow, kept what was then known as an establishment for lunatics in Hoxton. He then took a house in Pentonville, where his eldest son, John Stuart Mill, was born in 1806.

In 1651 John Milton moved into a garden-house in Petty France.

He lived there until the Restoration. Later it became No. 19 York Street, belonged to Jeremy Bentham, was occupied successively

by James Mill and William Hazlitt, and finally demolished in 1877.

From 1824 to 1826, Mill contributed to the Westminster Review, started as the organ of his party. From 1831 to 1833, Mill was largely occupied in the defence of the East India Company, during the controversy attending the renewal of its charter. was opened on 24th December 1868 by the District Railway (DR, now the District line) when the company opened the first section of its line between South Kensington and Westminster stations.

On 30th June 1900, the Middle Circle service was withdrawn between Earl's Court and Mansion House. On 31st December 1908 the Outer Circle service was also withdrawn.

In the late 1930s, the station building was rebuilt in the modern style and escalators were installed between the ticket hall and the platforms.

The new station building did not last long as it was mostly destroyed during World War II. A German bomb that fell in November 1940

The River Westbourne, one of London's many subterranean rivers, flows above the station in a large iron conduit. The construction of the station was complicated by the crossing of the site by the River Westbourne which ran through Hyde Park as the Serpentine Lake and was originally crossed by the Knight's Bridge at Knightsbridge. The river was carried above the platform in a large iron pipe suspended from girders. It remains in place today.

The DR connected to the Metropolitan Railway (MR, later the Metropolitan line) at South Kensington and, although the two companies were rivals, each company operated its trains over the others tracks in a

On 1st February 1872, the DR opened a northbound branch from its station at Earl's Court to connect to the West London Extension Joint Railway (WLEJR, now the West London Line) to which it connected at Addison Road (now Kensington (Olympia)).

From that date the "Outer Circle" service began running over the DR's tracks. The service was run by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) from Broad Street (now demolished) in the City of London via the North London Line to Willesden Junction, then the West London Line to Addison Road. From Addison Road it ran over DR tracks to Mansion House.

On 5th April 1960, Peter Llewelyn Davies, one of the Llewelyn Davies boys who were the inspiration for the boy characters of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, and who resented the public association with the character named after him, committed suicide by throwing himself under a train as it was pulling into the station.

On 26 December 1973, a terrorist bomb exploded in the telephone kiosk in the booking office. No one was injured.

From 1st August 1872, the "Middle Circle" service also began operations through Sloane Square running from Moorgate along the MR's tracks on the north side of the Inner Circle to Paddington then over the Hammersmith & City Railway (H&CR) track to Latimer Road then, via a now demolished link, to the

Sloane Square was considered as a potential station on the longproposed Chelsea-Hackney line which has been absorbed into plans for Crossrail 2. The station is no longer on the planned route.

is a paved open space in the Westminster. It lies between the Palace of Westminster to its north and east and Westminster Abbey to its west. It is known as the site of executions, including those of Sir Walter Raleigh, Guy Fawkes and other conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, and James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton, following the Battle of Preston.

formally known as Abingdon Street Gardens is a small public park in Westminster. The gardens are situated behind Westminster Abbey, and to the east of Westminster Abbey Gardens and are adjacent to the Houses of Parliament.

The park is a common place for television reporters to interview Members of Parliament. Henry Moore's bronze sculpture Knife Edge Two Piece 1962–65 is located in the gardens.

St Margaret Street / Abingdon Street divides Old Palace Yard into two parts, running diagonally from the north-west to the south-east.

The eastern, larger part belongs to the grounds of the Palace of Westminster. To the north of the Yard is St Stephen's Entrance, the public entrance into the Palace, as well as the great South Window of Westminster Hall. Standing near this window and facing away from it is a bronze equestrian statue of Richard Coeur de Lion (King Richard I. Created by Baron Carlo Marochetti, the statue was completed in 1856 and installed in its present location in 1860. The

The site was originally in the River Thames, and separated from the College Garden of Westminster Abbey by a medieval wall with a watergate. Its name refers to the collegiate church of Westminster Abbey, which includes Westminster School.

COLLEGE GARDEN

is a private garden of Westminster Abbey open to the public every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Garden can be visited separately from the Abbey and no charge is made to visit the Garden alone. While visiting College Garden, it is also possible to visit the Little Cloister Garden, a small garden with a fountain in the cloisters, and St Catherine's Garden which is in the ruins of the old monastic infirmary.

eastern side of Old Palace Yard is defined by the West Front of the Palace, which is part of the precincts of the House of Lords; the carriage porch of the Peers' Entrance marks the middle of this frontage, and the Victoria Tower its southern end.

Access to this part of Old Palace Yard is restricted for security reasons and for most of the year it is used as a car park for the House of Lords, but it is cleared of barriers and street furniture for the annual State Opening of Parliament, the formal opening of the legislative session by the monarch.

A thousand years ago it was the infirmary garden of the monastery, and it is said to be the oldest garden in England under continuous cultivation. While the main function of the College Garden is no longer to feed hungry monks, the area still retains an atmosphere of calm. Remembering the Herbarium that the monks created here, a new Herb Garden was created in 2010.

Its current name refers to the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster Abbey, rather than to its component Westminster School of which Lord Burlington's College Dormitory building forms the west side. The north side is formed by the great hall of Westminster School, and the houses of the Abbey Canons; the east and south sides are a medieval wall with a watergate which formerly opened into the River Thames, now embanked fifty yards away beyond the House of Lords.

The western part of Old Palace Yard is freely accessible to the public.

To its west are located the Henry VII Chapel and the Chapter House of Westminster Abbey, while to its south stands 6–7 Old Palace Yard, the sole survivor of the row of houses that used to surround the Yard.

The building is now part of the Parliamentary Estate. Close by is a statue of King George V, made of Portland stone; sculpted by Sir William Reid Dick and unveiled in 1947, it stands on a pedestal by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and faces the Peers' Entrance of the Palace of Westminster. In 2002 an analemmatic sundial was fitted into the Yard's pavement in front of the statue, as a gift to Queen Elizabeth II from Parliament on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee. www.eyepublications.co.uk
