Intermezzo The Past Connecting to The Future

2023-2024 Impact Report

Thank You for Supporting Our Mission!

“This year taught us dedication and understanding of something bigger than ourselves, requiring us to come together to create truly transformational music.”

Character. Commitment. Discipline. Community.

INTERMEZZO: a short interval of music connecting two movements.

OUR MISSION

The PYO Music Institute uses extraordinary music education through the pursuit of music excellence to inspire a strong sense of character, commitment, discipline, and community for our diverse student population.

Dear Friends,

We are very proud to present to you our “Intermezzo: PYO Music Institute’s 2023-2024 Impact Report.” This compendium of stories and metrics highlights a kinetic “interval” of reflection, preparation, and vision, all made possible by your immutable support. This year, we embraced a nurturing phase using historical insights to cultivate and grow a promising future. PYO Music Institute has drawn from its rich legacy to build a new, relevant narrative of success and impact while constructing the scaffolding for stories to come.

One of our most prominent highlights has been the ongoing strategic growth of the PYO Music Institute’s newest ensembles led by our talented alumni. Philadelphia Youth Symphonic Band (PYSB) and Philadelphia Youth Jazz Orchestra (PYJO) continue to bring fresh perspectives, unique talents, and invaluable experience to the Institute, embodying our strategic goal to increase participation and engagement from diverse populations across our community.

We take great pride in the remarkable milestones that our talented students and alumni achieved during this season. Being a formative part of their personal and musical journeys is truly an honor. Our alumni are making a significant impact, showcasing their talents in ways that weave deeply into the fabric of Philadelphia and beyond.

None of these achievements would have been possible without your unwavering support. Your dedication is the cornerstone of our young musicians’ success, enabling us to provide exceptional music education and mentorship that nurtures their talents, builds their confidence, and inspires excellence. For this, we are profoundly grateful.

We are thrilled to embark on our 85th season, brimming with concerts and milestone events. Join us to witness firsthand the transformative power of music in the lives of our students. Your presence and encouragement mean the world to all of us here at PYO Music Institute.

With best regards and sincerest appreciation,

The 2023-2024 season was a captivating interval of music, talent, and community. PYOMI’s dedication to nurturing future musicians shown brightly with stellar performances, tributes to educators, and expanded programs. As we embrace a bold new future, we carry forward the inspiring moments and achievements of this remarkable season.

A Grand Opening with Brahms and Elgar: November 13, 2023

The opening performance of the 84th season set a high bar with inspiring renditions of Brahms’ Second Symphony and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, by the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra at Verizon. This dynamic performance was made possible with the generous support of our presenting sponsor, Republic Bank.

A Mesmerizing Performance Featuring Violinist and PYOMI Alumnus Richard Amoroso: March 3, 2024

The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra performed Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto with the incredible Philadelphia Orchestra violinist and PYO alumnus, Richard Amoroso. Held at Verizon Hall, Amoroso’s virtuosic performance left the audience in awe and highlighted the exceptional synergy between the soloist and the orchestra.

Interval: Events

9th Annual Showcase Concert: February 11, 2024

One of the season’s most significant highlights was PYOMI’s 9th Annual Showcase Concert at The Kimmel Center. This extraordinary event featured performances by each of PYOMI’s ensembles, welcomed record breaking attendance, making it a true celebration of the Institute’s diverse musical talents. The day began with performances in Commonwealth Plaza at 1 pm, followed by a grand performance in Marian Anderson Hall at 2 pm.

Hosted by CBS Philadelphia News Co-anchor, Ukee Washington, the Showcase Concert was our most-attended event of the year, drawing over 1,000 attendees to both shows. The enthusiasm and energy of the performers, combined with the support of a large and appreciative audience, made this a truly memorable occasion. The concert was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and educators, showcasing the incredible breadth and depth of talent within the PYO Music Institute.

84th Annual Gala: Stories of the Future March 22, 2024

A major highlight of the season was undoubtedly the PYO Music Institute’s Annual Gala 2024: Stories of the Future, held at The Union League of Philadelphia. This event is the Institute’s largest fundraiser of the year and plays a crucial role in supporting its students and programs.

This exquisite dinner and concert event featured a mesmerizing solo performance of Beethoven’s Romance for Violin and Orchestra with guest violinist Michael Ludwig, followed by dancing to the sounds of CTO Midtown Express.

Tune Up Philly – Orchestral Pathways Program participants Erin and Layla made a memorable debut as the “Double Treble” duet at the Gala, supported by Director Paul Smith on guitar.

Thanks to the generous support of our guests and sponsors, the Gala raised over $185,000 in support of Tune Up Philly students and our financial aid fund. This incredible success ensures that the future stories of hundreds of young musicians will continue to benefit from the transformative power of music education.

Access for All: Making Music in the Community

Our Vision for a Diverse and Inclusive Organization

PYOMI strives to provide an inclusive and supportive learning environment for our diverse student body. Our organization and its programs provide a welcoming space for students, staff, faculty, audiences, and board members to experience a true sense of belonging.

The Philadelphia Music Alliance for Youth Artists’ Initiative (PMAY) supports 5th through 12th grade students from underrepresented communities and lowincome households in becoming professional classical musicians. Partnering with the PYO Music Institute, PMAY aims to increase diversity in the classical music world, where less than 5% of musicians in American orchestras are African American or Latino. Furthermore, the number of South Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives remain low, contrasting the racial and ethnic diversity of cities supporting these orchestras.

PYO Music Institute shares in this mission-driven commitment to diversity. This collaboration allows us to further our goal of providing high-quality music education and professional opportunities to all students, regardless of their background, ensuring that the classical music world becomes more inclusive and representative of the diverse communities we serve.

PMAY provides financial support for lessons, music classes, youth orchestra participation, and summer camps, as well as free college and career preparation workshops. Partnering organizations include Musicopia, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Sinfonia, Project 440, The School District of Philadelphia, Settlement Music School, and Temple University Music Preparatory Division.

The Joyce C. Levy Scholarship Program

This vital scholarship program was launched in 2024 to help selected Tune Up Philly-Orchestral Pathways Program (TUP) scholars develop the prerequisite skills necessary to successfully matriculate to the next level of their musical education through private studio instruction. The program offers selected TUP students weekly private lessons, access to a loaned instrument, and a stipend for instrument accessories and maintenance.
