“The Sanderson Family of York.”
Back in 1976 my Father Albert Sanderson informed me I would receive The Freedom of The City of York upon attaining my 21st. birthday. I asked where it had come from. He told me it had come from his father and his father before him and so on. However what was not certain was how far this went back and how did it begin. Hence my search began. Many visits to The City Library and Archives along with numerous trips to London commenced. Family members gladly provided details. One of the biggest and most valuable sources of information was a note book kept by William Settle Sanderson and later Harold Victor Sanderson, his son. This provided a fascinating insight to our family at that time. A full copy of the contents of the Notebook are contained within this document. The information contained within this document is deliberately intended to be factual with no interpretations added. The information has been gathered from written documents or spoken words from those who knew. This document should be read with the pedigree chart. Please do not be offended if some information is not 100% correct but simply let me know and I will amend it. For the benefit of this historical document I urge you to spend time writing down facts about our family members so they can be recorded for posterity. It is my intention to finally lodge this document in The City of York Reference Library as a permanent record of “The Sanderson Family of York.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY, - Early
yesterday morning, a sad accident befell a young man named William Settle Sanderson on the north line of the railway at York. The young fellow was stepping back from a goods train he was shunting when another train from Newcastle came up, and knocked him down, the wheels passing over the right foot, severely crushing it. Happily the accident was noticed, and the poor young fellow was promptly picked up and conveyed at once to the County Hospital, where his case received careful attention. It is feared that the injured foot will have to be amputated.
